I had my sailor Luke on the first day (I just think he suits a sailor collar also they were common in formalwear for rich young boys), second day was my st Mystere costume and my last day was a Molentary Express stewardess! 2023.06.02 09:10 hayoonseo As a Korean-American, English subtitles on Kpop's variety content peeve me, using NCT127's Fill it Up as an extensive example

I'm Korean-American, but I'm not as fluent as my parents in Korean. I wouldn't consider myself to be on the level of natives at all, but I am conversational in it and can understand Korean more than I can speak it (vocabulary wise). That's also why I turn on English subs so I can understand some Korean vocab that I haven't heard of while listening. So while I guess I'm not the most 'suited' to be having gripes about this, it does get on my nerves often when I find certain nuances mistranslated and some sentences worded weirdly or connotatively different to the point it erases and lessens its original meaning and impact. Excuse me if I can't explain some things very well-- I don't have very broad English vocabulary either lol.
This has been peeving me for a while with other videos, but I got tired when I was re-watching NCT127's 'Fill it Up' variety content on Youtube. This isn't hate to any of the idols at all, nor the translators themselves. Just complaints and criticisms.
There's so many off translations (even slightly that kind of ruins the fun, meaning, and personality of the members as they talk) that I'll only be providing a few from the first 15 minutes of the first freaking episode. I think Going Seventeen's English subs do the best in providing somewhat accurate translations and making it humorous during actual funny moments with fun subs and no butchering of what the idols have said, so kudos to them. But what Going SVT team has done is what many others haven't, and that is one of my biggest complaints with other idols' variety subtitles. Humor doesn't translate well between languages and I know that, but I do think there's so many better ways jokes and sarcasm can be translated so that their meaning and connotation are carried over well without ruining the fun of it. Of course, 1-to-1 translations from language to language is hard since they're all so different, but regarding nuance and grammar structure, there is a way to go around that imo. There's only so much one can do with puns, but a lot of humor in simple Korean jokes (that don't require the audience to know the culture to understand!) are often translated stiffly or boringly.
For example, in the first episode of 'Fill it Up', Haechan is teasing Jungwoo, basically treating him and referring to him as a puppy while cooking (more specifically, calling Jungwoo his dog's name), saying (in puppy-talk) that he'll give him food soon. Jungwoo laughs/scoffs and says "킹받네?" which is Korean slang that roughly means "annoyed/pissed off". I do want to add that the question mark after 킹받네 isn't to allude to it being a question, it's more so that it can read like a joking "haha.. that kinda pisses me off?" way. This was taken directly from their video's K-subs. I do also wish English subs would take context and what is happening on screen with expressions and everything to translate but maybe I'm wishing for too much. Because in context with expressions and his joking tone added in, he would basically be saying "that pissed me off?" or more directly, "that makes me pissed off?". I get it, saying idols are 'pissed off' wouldn't do their image good. Still, they can say "that annoys me?" and achieve similar effect.
Meanwhile, the English subs proceed to say "It's making me upset".
Yes, this is probably a really 'small' difference, but when I first read the subs, I was confused. Especially since in that moment, a lot of audios are overlapping and members are talking at the same time, leading to multiple sub lines so there's confusion on what the hell Jungwoo is referring to by saying "it". It takes away his joke's humorous meaning and strips the attitude away, and while I know people who don't speak Korean can pick up on its humor through context and Jungwoo's tone of speech, the way the subs convey the slang is rigid and just ultimately too stuck-up. Jungwoo's saying it casually. It's slang. In what world does someone in a casual conversation with a friend, especially when joking around, say "It's making me upset"? It even lost that question mark that helped with the tone! It sounds freaking sophisticated compared to a friend jokingly saying to a friend "that kinda pissed me off?", especially given Haechan was talking to him like a puppy lol. I just wish translators in charge of English subs would put into consideration not only connotation and word choice, but the way the sentence is worded and how actual people in actual irl conversations would talk. It takes away so much of that idol's personality, tone, attitude, expression, everything. It doesn't necessarily give it a different meaning, but a lame one. Less entertaining for a variety show. That leads into my next point.
In English subs, I found that what the idols say is often made to be more weirdly formal and less casual than how they actually say it, making them sound stern/business-y/awkward. Like, no one talks like that in real convos? A lot of English subs in variety content make them sound sophisticated with one another and it's so weird to read because while the idols themselves can say something completely casually, the subs will make them sound proper and formal. It's awkward, because that's not how the members worded it at all. Grammar, sentence structure, word choice included. In interviews or other actual formal settings, I don't mind as much since it makes sense, but in variety? They're supposed to be looser, more fun, and adhere less to that pro/perfect standard since it's variety content for their fans, not an interview with a reporter. Having Eng subs that make the idols sound boring and like they're writing a research paper isn't the way to go about translating conversations guys...
There's lots of moments like these where conversations between NCT127's members or even all the members speaking at once are translated so stiffly and awkwardly in 'Fill it Up'.
At the 4:14 mark, the members are making a schedule of what to do on their two-day vacation. Haechan says "We'll eat lunch from 2 to 2:30". And I think Taeyong (correct me on this, his face wasn't shown when speaking) says, "??? 야 30분 점심은 좀 그렇지 않아?" which I would translate to, with nuance and everything included again, "Hey (야), isn't a 30-minute lunch a bit too short???" since in Korean, Taeyong doesn't actually say it's short explicitly, he says it like "don't you think it's a bit [short]?" with the 'short' omitted.
But that 1-to-1 translation is a bit weird and imo Eng translations should adhere to what sounds right in English (while keeping it accurate), so going with my rough translation would be better than the direct version. You can read Taeyong's tone in what I wrote without having to watch the video to hear him, right? Maybe laughing a little, being in disbelief, pointing out to Haechan that that's impossible, etc. That can all be alluded in what I translated. But what do we get in the actual English subs?
Haechan: "Let's have lunch from 2 or 2:30" (he did not say 'or' in Korean but we move on)
Taeyong: "That's too short"
That's it. End of story. I get this is being incredibly picky, but really? So much meaning was taken away from that sentence. Sure, it's one sentence out of a thousand in this video, but all the other lines are pretty much like this too. In the video, we can't even see his face as he says it and can only listen to his voice and tone. He laughs in the beginning a little bit while he says it but that's about as much context as we get. Just reading "That's too short" in comparison to "Hey, isn't a 30-minute lunch a bit too short???" is so off-putting and wipes out his attitude and personality that comes along with how he says it. Yes, subs can get long. Therefore you can shorten it without losing its tone and meaning. "Hey, isn't that a bit too short???" is still a lot better than "That's too short." and again, without the question mark. This happens in multiple occasions and I'll just spit out examples without going as in depth as I did with this one. Poor word choices leads to poor connotations, leading to the audience to not be able to empathize or understand properly what the idols mean.
7:23-- Jungwoo and Jaehyun making jokes about the chihuahua in front of them, saying it looks like it worked out and went to the gym because of how buff it is. By the way, this is supposed to be funny. At least it was to me, until I read the English subtitles.

What Jungwoo actually said: "아니 아니 형! 얘 운동 좀 했는데?" (roughly translating/alluding to "No, no, hyung! He (the dog) looks like he's worked out a bit?")
What Eng subs Jungwoo said: "He has worked out a bit."

Sounds too sophisticated for a joke. Like really, too sophisticated. Not even a "he's". It's "He has". Awkward, uptight, unfunny. Not to mention it completely omits "No, no, hyung!". Anyone can hear Jungwoo say 'something something hyung'. What's so wrong with putting it in subs? Anyway...
8:01-- Haechan, Doyoung, Johnny about to cook. Doyoung says to remove some of the ingredients because everyone doesn't eat that much. Haechan, on the other hand, wants the ingredients and reaches to get them. Haechan's supposed to be like "still~" in response to Doyoung (and you can hear it in his voice and see it on his expression). Not humor, but the way he expressed his disagreement gets lost in translation.

Doyoung: "First, we don't need these 3... We don't eat that much"
What Haechan actually said: "아이~ 그래도" (roughly translating to "Heyy/Come on~ still!" or like a "Nah~ still!" if we're going even more casual)
What Eng subs Haechan said: "Hey"

Yes. That was it. Just "Hey". I would understand if they at least put "Hey~" to follow in with Haechan's fluctuation of voice and tone. But no. Just "Hey".
9:15-- Mark helping Doyoung pour in sauce. Doyoung & Taeil tell Mark not to put in too much.

Taeil: "I don't think you need a lot"
What Mark actually said: "근데... 많이 더 해도 될 거 같은데?" (roughly translating to "But... I think we can put more?")
What Eng subs Mark said: "But you should add a lot"

Makes Mark sound like he knows his stuff LMAO! He was actually being doubtful and questioning Taeil and Mark, but in Eng subs, it sounds like he's insisting it. And just seeing those two dialogues together without context is super super awkward. Taeil says "I don't think you need a lot", then right after, Mark says "But you should add a lot". Doesn't it sound off?
11:15-- Yuta playing with the dog and the dog is licking him/itself I can't really tell. This translation's kind of literal so it's a bit funny lol.

What Yuta actually said: "낼름x4" (roughly translating to "mlem x4" which is just a sound effect of licking, cutely in this instance)
What Eng subs Yuta said: "Licking"

I shed a tear I think.
And there's so so so so so many more examples, but that would make the post way longer than it already is LMAO. So my thing is, I know translators work hard. It probably takes a long time and hell, they need to study up on inside jokes and such too. But man... I just wish it could be better. Maybe I'm being too picky and entitled as a Korean-speaker. But I also rely on English subtitles sometimes, and it's jarring to know idols are being translated so poorly like this on their own freaking shows. This is variety content. It's supposed to showcase idols' personalities and more casual sides of them as they interact with their fellow groupmates and play games and whatnot. Having the idols sound like robots and professional essay writers in subtitles aren't going to do anything for the English-speaking audience who want to see them for their personality, jokes, humor, so on. I do know that fans probably can just tell when subtitles aren't right and can know enough from the members' faces and actions for context, but it would be so much better to read accurate translations in real time and have a good laugh rather than having to interpret it correctly in their heads with only context clues given.
Languages are understandably hard to translate. There's no guarantee that everything gets translated correctly either. I know that. But there are so many work arounds that can cater to the English-speaking audience who know English slang, casual vocabulary, etc. English translators don't have to be 100% faithful to the Korean if it means changing it up to cater to the English audience for better understanding, but they can do it WHILE KEEPING IT ACCURATE AND IN CHARACTER! WITH CORRECT CONNOTATION! KEEPING THE NUANCES! But I do think translators work hard and I respect them. It just upsets me how it feels lazy and super unnatural, and I can't imagine how it would feel as a fan who doesn't speak Korean to read these kinds of subs. Maybe it's just me though.
TLDR: I am super super sorry for the long post. Basically, as a Korean-American who is semi-fluent in Korean but also relies on English subtitles sometimes, I am baffled by how off English subtitles are, especially in regards to nuance, sentence structure, connotations, word choices, and tone in Kpop groups' variety content. Variety content is supposed to be that. Variety. It's supposed to be fun. But more often than not, I see dialogue translated to sound like it came straight from a college research essay. The members sound sophisticated in English subtitles sometimes, and it just makes everything super awkward and just uptight. It doesn't sound like casual conversations at all, and rather takes away so much of the members' personalities and attitudes as they're speaking. It doesn't keep true to character, and it isn't even accurate. I do know 1-to-1 translations are hard between languages, but there are numerous work arounds to cater to audiences specific to those translated languages. It's just frustrating to see. But I do know translating work is hard and not everything can be perfect. I was watching NCT127's 'Fill it Up', which inspired this post, and noticed one too many differences from what they actually said and what the English subtitles said and drove me up the wall. Still, kudos to translators because I know it's a long process and there's not that many either. Just something I wish could be done better for not only NCT127, but a lot of other Kpop groups.

2023.06.02 08:00 Weird-Weakness-4044 Is it normal to struggle so much communicating with my boss?

I was out of the city for a week because of a college trip commitment. My job is a work-study program and my boss wanted to see me in-person (I couldn't make it that day).
It frustrated me to no end, all I feel like is crying. My misophonia has made it extremely difficult for me to go to the office and concentrate and properly do my job. After TWO mentorship programs, my college has been completely misunderstanding of my issues and basically forcing me to go to work at the office.
Instead of writing an email to my boss, I completely ignore the situation... I had a draft in my emails but I didn't even dare send it. What I had written in no way expressed the anger and frustration that I really felt.
It might be the only job situation I'll be in for a while, I've become so defeatist at the prospect of finding a job that suits my needs and helps me cover my basic necessities. I'm also so disgustingly tired of depending on my biological family for financial support. Self-employment is also in the cards (I would much rather not have to deal with superiors in my line of work) but I need something more immediate and no one will hire me.
I got a voicemail from my boss and idk how to proceed??

Personifying her namesake with our company name, she’s a hard-core hobbyist with plastic models in her blood! In the FA Girl anime, she helps Ao, a newbie modeler.
You might be surprised to learn that the character “Bukiko Kotobuki” has existed since 2014. This is before the release of the FA Girl anime. She was originally introduced as the PR ambassador for our Kotobuki Nipper!
Animator Satoshi Koike designed the character for us.

And now she’s made her big debut in the FA Girl anime!
The plastic model kit features this anime version of Bukiko.

The cute round face and mischievous expression from the anime version of Bukiko have all been sculpted into a model that loses none of her charm!
Given her origins, Bukiko and nippers are, of course, absolutely inseparable. This kit comes with two pairs of nippers! That means you can skip the old “double peace” pose and show her off like this, doing a “double nipper!”

She comes with a total of five facial expression parts: smug, poking tongue out, grinning, crying, and smiling.
The way her mouth is portrayed is quite unique, and really brings out the personality of Bukiko that we all enjoyed in the anime! Of course, unpainted versions of the same face parts and expression decals are also included, so you can create your own looks for Bukiko, too!
In order to reproduce the more rounded, soft contours of her face, the design of her face parts differs from that of Madoka, Koyomi and Ritsuka, and also somewhat from that of Ao. There’s no interchangeability between Bukiko and the previously mentioned first three characters. However, it is possible to exchange facial expression parts between Ao and Bukiko, so you can enjoy trying things like this:
Currently M.I.A. Producer Kameyama’s Model Mix-and-Match! “Bukiko and Ao each have their own facial parts’ design standard. Bukiko’s face has a more rounded chin, so it’s not a perfect exchange, but I’m happy to report that I was able to swap their face parts.”
The uniform is made in all the colors you see, except for the black lines and the gold buttons on the sleeves and back. The six gold buttons that run from her chest to her tummy and the checkered skirt are all pre-painted, so even without coloring it yourself, the model will look great!

The school emblem on the back of the collar can be reproduced with the decal that comes with the kit.
There is a 3mm hole in the center of the back for mounting with the display stand. Bukiko’s stand is a fresh spring green color.

She has a special skirt and parts for her waist and thighs, making a seated pose possible. And don’t worry, even the skirt for the sitting pose comes pre-painted in the checked pattern.
Bukiko’s sitting pose is sculpted with her legs apart so she can also be posed sitting cross-legged. Feet parts without shoes are also provided, so she can be posed in indoor settings.

She looks great sitting backwards on her chair. The slightly unorthodox position matches well with her naturally chill personality. Note that the chair is not included in the standard edition. You’ll need to buy the Modeler’s Edition to get this accessory.
Twelve different pairs of left/right hand parts are included.
In addition to the nine types included with the Ao kit, three new types were created just for Bukiko: a grabbing hand, a hand for holding nippers to allow recreation of the opening of the anime, and a hand compatible with holding an airbrush! You’ll need to pick up the Modeler’s Edition of the kit to get this airbrush accessory, however. It is not included in the standard edition.

Her school bag features “Sana-chan”, the mascot character from HEXA GEAR, made possible by an in-house collaboration here at Kotobukiya!
The zipper on the school bag is sculpted as a separate part in silver, so it looks really great even when just assembled out-of-the-box.

Although the two girls are wearing the same uniform, most of the parts were newly sculpted due to the difference in their body shapes. Our team put a lot of effort into accurately recreating the anime version of Bukiko, and we feel pretty sure that fans will be pleased with the result!

Large and small paint bottles (2 each) are included, and the bottles are made with clear plastic, with the lid in silver, so you can paint them any color you like The airbrush set parts are made in multiple colors, and come with an air hose that can be attached. You can cut it to the desired length.

The height of the chair is actually adjustable in three different levels. That way you can change it to fit other SOUSAI characters of different heights and seated poses at just the right height. The parts are individually sculpted in color.

When you don’t see someone for a while, they tend to look kind of different the next time you meet. That’s not because they’ve actually changed, but rather due to your memory being inaccurate. Still, I don’t think my roommate has always had barnacles growing on her.
Kit Sutton did indeed look different. Beautiful, but different.
In the short time we’d been apart, her hair had grown to an impressive length. It trailed after her through the water as she effortlessly hopped from rock to rock before landing in front of us. She was even more scantily clad than usual; in fact, she wasn’t wearing anything at all. Her normally olive skin had adopted a pearlescent sheen, interrupted by the algae, starfish and seashells clinging to her body. Her eyes shone in the light of our torch and she regarded us with an unreadable expression, putting a hand to her hip.
"I can't believe you're actually here." She shook her head, sounding like she wasn't even sure herself what tone to strike. "You… you'd better leave. And fast. I-it's nice to see you, though."
I took a step forward and hugged her. She felt slippery. "I've missed you."
"Yeah. Me too. You should still go now."
"You need to come back," I said. "I'm sorry I ever gave up on you. There has to be a way for you to come back."
She shook her head. "Eva, you saw what my father can do. You saw the wave and you just saw his grotto guard. There's, like, a thousand more where that one came from."
"What are you doing here anyways? Isn't this a kinda way too lonely spot for you to hang out?" Elijah asked. "Doesn't seem very you."
"Yeah. It's… not." She rolled her eyes. "I'm basically grounded. My Dad's gonna keep me here for the next two hundred years or so. I'm not allowed to leave until he trusts me again."
"Two hundred years?" Eli echoed.
Kit massaged her temples. "I don't like it either, believe me." Looking up, a hopeful expression crossed her face. "How's Nettie?"
"She misses you," I told her.
"She does? That's, um… nice."
"It's cool, I know about you two."
"Oh. Well. I'm really glad she's thinking about me. Is that mean? Because I don't want her to be unhappy, it just feels good, you know?"
"I can imagine," I answered. "And it only proves my point. We have to get you out of here."
"Dude, I said no. You actually can't beat my father. I wish that was an option, but it's simply not."
"Kit…"
"It's Chandra." She raised her head to fix me with a stern gaze. So empty, so joyless, so… unlike her. "It was nice being Kit and running around up top and living with you. Those were a good few years, and now here I am, paying the price. There is nothing you can do against my Dad."
Silence descended upon us for a sober couple seconds. I studied her expression, her set jaw and taut shoulders. "And what about you?" I asked. "Can you do something?"
Kit snorted. "You've never even seen me use any sort of powers."
"But you have them, don't you?"
"Actually, I do." She casually raised a hand, her wrist slowly describing a circle. Eli and I watched in astonished silence as a trail of water snaked its way up from the lake, arching above her head and trickling back down on the other side of the stepstone. Kit Sutton looked after it disinterestedly, then turned to us with a bored shrug. "I guess I can sorta control water."
Elijah was gaping at her. "Could you do this the whole time?"
"Nope. Only when I'm in my natural habitat. I'm the crown princess—" she spat out the words in discontent, forming air-quotes around them— "and the heiress to the throne, so I'm, like, ultra connected to my element or whatever. Not like my siblings."
"But as of now, you are stronger than them?" I queried. "Is there any possibility you could become stronger than your father, too?"
For a moment, she stared at me, her bottom lip caught between her teeth. "Actually, let me show you something." Her naked feet never once slipping on the wet stone, she proceeded towards the nearest platform rock, jumping off with ease and landing gracefully. After trading shrugs with Elijah Carter, we scrambled after her. She led us back a little ways and then down one of the other passages we'd glimpsed before, barely losing a word the whole time. I stopped trying to strike up a conversation, focusing solely on keeping up with her unnaturally sleek, swift steps.
"The olm you saw before was one of my father's guardians," she called out sharply over her shoulder. "The sea breeds giants, as they say. Or rather, Dad does. He keeps creating abominations like that, and he uses them to ward off outsiders in places where they don't belong. They're obviously not stopping me from running away again—you've seen that they'll obey me. But his Majesty has made it quite clear that if I break out, he's going to turn the town into a swamp. I'm not going to be responsible for people's deaths, or the loss of their homes. Especially not… not hers."
She came to a halt, squaring her shoulders. Above her head, I could make out the silhouette of an opening in the tunnel. "We're here. This… this should be enough proof that he'll make good on any threat he's ever uttered." She stepped aside to make way for us.
We hesitantly pushed past her and into the room that lay before us. It was different from all the others we'd seen thus far—it didn't lure one into a false sense of security with its descriptive beauty. In fact, the second the beam of our flashlight illuminated its interior, every last fiber of my being started to cry out to me, telling me to run. My flight instinct kicking in, I tried desperately to stay grounded somehow, to keep control. I couldn't allow myself to panic. This was a horrible time to end up going dimensions. I had to remain in this reality, no matter how difficult the sight before me was rendering the task.
I heard Elijah Carter gag beside me, his stomach revolting at what he saw. His hand abruptly flew to my shoulder, cold, sweat-slick fingers clamping down on my skin, hard enough to bruise. With my own stomach doing kick-flips inside my body, I could understand his reaction far too well. Instead of shrinking away, I reached up to graze his knuckles with my own, a fleeting touch I couldn't find the strength to hold. It was hard to be reassuring given the circumstances.
We were looking at a gallery of corpses. They lined the walls, the floor, the ceiling, all in different states of wholeness and decay. A viscous, transparent fluid was gluing them to the stone, fixing them in their respective places. In some spots, it looked quite shiny and fresh, while in others, it had hardened, encasing the dead bodies like clear, pale amber. It was an unorganized chaos, the carcasses strewn practically everywhere, some overlapping, some upside down. Some had their eyes still open, their faces eternally frozen in void, empty expressions of terror. Most bodies weren't even complete—arms, legs or heads were missing, pronounced bitemarks marring the aged yet well-preserved flesh.
Elijah and I found ourselves standing rooted to the ground, too terrified to move, too dazed to speak. My friend's dark gaze frantically raced over the walls, flickering across the horrid display, taking in the carnage. My own eyes seemed to be burning. My head was spinning, and I had to hold onto his arm to support myself—it felt as though my legs were about to give way beneath me.
A shimmering light at the center of the room caught my attention. Somehow finding it within me to steady myself, I took a couple faltering steps towards it. Elijah Carter followed suit and Kit Sutton wordlessly trailed after us. Stepping over the dozens and dozens of corpses in my way, I tried hard to keep my wits about me. When I finally reached its source, I was surprised to find it to be a pond, or rather a bottomless hole of water. Another connection to the sea, no doubt. The shine however seemed fine from within it, from down below where there would normally be just darkness. Looking in, the breath was once again stolen from my lungs. It felt rather like peering through a small window into a very large hall. I could only see a fracture of what lay beneath.
Hovering within the endless masses of water was the enormous statue of a woman. Her stony pale arms were raised, her hands reaching out almost pleadingly, as if she was hoping for someone to pull her up from her cold, abyssal grave. Her eyes, one of which was about the size of my head, were wide open, her colorless stare holding a wild, unreadable mix of emotions. Her lips were parted in a silent scream. An unearthly, bright glow surrounded her; it seemed to come from within her body rather than anywhere else. It was disturbingly beautiful.
"Her name was Calypso."
Kit's voice pulled me from my trance. When I turned to face her, she pointedly avoided my gaze. An idea took shape in my mind, created by the faint, wavery undertone of mourning in her words. "She was someone special, wasn't she?"
"My mother."
I swallowed, my pulse still thrumming in my ears. Stepping forward, I tentatively grasped my roommate's hand. She let go of a soft breath, the corner of her mouth twitching. "These people here have been rotting away for centuries. It's the worst punishment imaginable, isn't it. The lucky ones are dead before they get glued down, but the ones he's really angry at, he covers in that goo when they're, like, lethally injured. I don't quite know what this stuff is, but it slows down all those organic processes, the death, the decomposition…" She paused. "With Mom, it was different. He turned her to stone. The same kind that grows from the ground here, you know; that smooth, shiny kinda rock that looks real pretty."
"What did she do to piss off your Dad?"
"What did any of these poor fuckers do? Most of these are failed cult leaders, actually. You'd never guess how many cults the deep ones have dedicated to them. As for my mother, I don't know. I can't even remember her, to be honest." She shrugged with affected carelessness. "You see it now? My father is… just beyond comprehension."
"So are you, though, aren't you? If you think about it."
"Eva, I know you're trying to boost morale here, but it's not working. Please let me get you out of here. And for heaven's sake, don't come back."
She led us back through the labyrinth of tunnels and corridors, staying well behind when we caught the first glimpse of daylight.
"I promise I'll think of something," I told her. "I'll find a way to get you out."
She merely shook her head. "No, you won't. Just go home and look for a new roommate. Or move back in with Nettie. She'll be glad."
I clenched my teeth, but allowed Eli to press his palm to my back, guiding me towards the exit.
"Actually, just… just wait. Could you tell her I, like, miss her? A lot?" Kit shouted after us, a sudden note of warmth softening her voice.
Elijah turned back to her with a sad smile. "Of course."
We didn't return to the car straight away, instead walking along the shore for a little while. My extra limbs having retracted and Eli's face having returned to a less nauseous color, we didn't bear any outward traces of our experience in the cave. We didn’t talk much, but we almost leaned onto one other with how closely we stuck to each other’s side. Eventually, I gathered the strength to break the silence. “This can’t stand, obviously.”
“You still want to get her out?” He gave me a sidelong glance. “This is more for Nettie’s sake than anything else, isn’t it?”
“I do like Kit Sutton, and I miss her tremendously,” I stated. “But largely, it is.”
Elijah, having nothing else to add, gave a noncommittal grunt.
“Would you mind if I asked you something personal?” I asked.
“Try it and find out.”
“I was wondering about what Mary Markov said about you earlier,” I began. “An incident at a highschool.”
He sighed. Silence fell, and for a minute I thought he wouldn’t respond at all. Then, he slowed down, coming to a halt and turning to look out at the horizon. “So how do we do this, Shirley? You really want me to pour my heart out to you and let you in on my tragic past as we stare at the tossing waves? That’s a bit too romantic for the two of us, if you ask me.”
“But you’d let me in on your tragic past in a less romantic setting?”
“Oh sure, anytime,” he said lightly. “Well, not any time. I’d be okay talking to you about it, though. See, it doesn’t matter to me if you know or not, the problem is kinda the headspace and getting the words out of my mouth in the first place.”
“I’m glad you feel like you could do that with me.” I regarded his profile, noting how he swallowed and shut his eyes for a moment.
“Let’s go back to the car.”
So we did. Only that it wasn’t quite how we left it. Elijah noticed it first—a low, hissed curse escaped him as he bent down to inspect the damage. The back window had been smashed in. The brown folder Mary Markov had given me was gone.

2023.06.02 05:39 Kroftyy I just finished watching The Challenge: All Stars for the first time. Here are some of my thoughts!

Hey all,
So that has to be a record for me I think - I finished and posted about Double Agents less than 2 days ago, and am now here with my All Stars post. That should give you a good indication of what I thought about this season. Lets’ discuss!
Disclaimer: At this stage I have only seen seasons 5-36 of The Challenge, plus the VS spinoffs, and AS1. Please refrain from spoiling any other seasons, or returning players. Thanks :)
TL;DR Summary
All Stars is a love letter to the old-school Challenge. OG cast members are brought back and inject new life into the show, falling back into familiar roles, or in some cases, showing tremendous growth and maturity. This season SLAPS, and is a return to form in many ways. Dailies and eliminations are honed back to simple, yet effective, much like we saw around The Duel era. Gone is the over-production of the mainline season, instead showcasing fun and entertainment. The cast brings it across the board, fantastic characters, loveable moments and inspiring growth. The entire vibe of the season is a throwback, with 80s-00s music, a house that calls back to old-school moments, familiar formats and challenges, and of course, the old-school cast. The season is capped off with a genuinely fun and tough final which was a joy to watch, and whilst the season isn’t perfect due to a one-winner final, and it feeling a little short, it’s an A-Tier through and through.
The Good

The cast - amazing to see so many of these people back
Yes, Darrell, Jonna, KellyAnne, Kendal, Laterrian, Katie, Syrus, Teck in particular all standouts
The love and respect between the cast is so evident here - so much lifting each other up instead of dragging each other down
The dailies and eliminations are simple but effective and are a blast to watch
The uncensored swearing allows people to fully express themselves and it’s incredible.
The music is on point all season long
The final is tough and really interesting to watch unfold. The points system is a great approach to running a staged final.
More genuine drama and hookups than the main show.
Diverse casting that feels genuine - race, body types, sexuality, I loved it.

The Not So Good

It SUCKS that the final is one winner. Especially because Day 1 was incredibly fair for a one-winner final, with Day 2 then ruining that and ensuring a male win. KA and Jonna robbed.
The season is a touch too short - before I knew it, it was over. Needed more eliminations and a few less people making the final.
Jemmye has good confessionals but feels a little out of place on the cast
I wish elimination nominations were anonymous - people putting themselves into elimination was dumb.

The format
The format this simple is so simple and it’s fantastic.
This season is essentially an individual game, with some dailies performed in pairs/teams depending on the episode. The usual daily/elimination structure remains, with all contestants participating in a daily challenge each episode. Each day is either a male or female elimination day. Depending on the day, the top and bottom performing male/female earn immunity or a direct ticket into elimination (LOVEEEEE seeing daily losers going straight into elimination). Their opponent is then chosen by majority vote in the cast, although much of the time people end up self-nominating this season.
For the first half of the season the ‘additional twist’ is the lifesaver - a twist we haven’t seen in a long, long time. The top performing alternate gender from the daily gets access to the lifesaver, and can use it to save the nominated/voted contestant from going into the elimination. It’s only used once, and when it is, involves a majority re-vote on the spot to find the new contender.
For the second half of the season, the lifesaver is dropped and the individual eliminations turn into double eliminations. The bottom performing male AND female are made a pair and go straight into elimination. The top performing male/female get immunity. The house still continues to majority vote the opponent, but only vote for one person. That person then gets free choice from the whole cast on who they want as a partner, for the elimination. This was a little clunky and unfair I thought. Probably the weakest part of the format, and robbed Kendal from a final spot.
Overall though, I enjoyed the down-to-earth feeling of this format. It was simple. No ‘security breaches’, no ‘kill cards’ (as much as I love that twist) - just straightforward. It’s a perfect match to the OG feel of this season.
The cast
The cast this season is mostly fantastic. You can all tell that are having such a great time being there. We get contestants falling into familiar moulds, contestants who have grown and changed, and most importantly, contestants that want to win.
Yes: This is my first true exposure to Yes as a contestant. I previously saw him in Battle of the Seasons where he was first boot, and for a few episodes in Sexes 1, but I couldn’t tell you a thing about him from that season. This one showing has made me a huge Yes fan though. I love his attitude, and his positivity, I love his approach to the game, and I think he put in a powerhouse performance in that final, playing not only harder, but smarter as well. I was definitely rooting for him (among pretty much everyone in that final LOL) and was glad that we got a brand new Champ this season. Congrats to Yes and hope to see lots more of him - also him calling out the ‘punks on those other shows’ is iconic.
Jonna: Jonna was absolutely fantastic this season. I LOVE the maturity and grace that she has come back to The Challenge with. The Jonna we had previously known was much younger, much more fiery and immature, and going through a bit of a rough patch in her life (including getting partnered with Zach). This new and improved Jonna was a delight to watch. She’s a mom now, and come onto the show a mere 7 months post-partum, and she does FANTASTIC. I think she was such a likeable and enjoyable presence all season long, and then went on to perform so well, unexpectedly, in that final. I cannot wait to hopefully see her back on AS2 - I truly think she could smash it.
Darrell: This might be one of my favourite Darrell seasons ever. After he was robbed of all airtime on Double Agents, we get huge exposure to Darrell this season, with him being one of the main narrators and confessionalists. He is in prime form when it comes to his comedy this season. I don’t know if it was cause he could swear, or what, but he was more hilarious than ever before. I have a ridiculous number of quotes from him that I want to call out below. Great, strong performance throughout, and was the second TRUE threat to win in that final, alongside Yes. Loved their friendly rivalry, and whilst I’m happy Yes won… I was rooting even harder for Darrell. So close!! I hope he gets more time on the All Stars show because it really suited him.
KellyAnne: Those that have followed along with my posts will know I’m a massive fan of KellyAnne, and so I was extremely happy to see her cast this season. It’s been way too long. It’s probably not one of her most memorable seasons, she plays a pretty low-key game and doesn’t have a huge amount of screen-time, or memorable moments, but I loved watching her make another final and essentially ‘winning’ for the girls side alongside Jonna. The two of them 100% deserved at least some prize money, and should have received a title.
Mark: Mark is one of the challengers this season that hasn’t changed a bit, for better or worse. Mark has always been an interesting character to me - he’s obviously prolific for being a S1 Road Ruler, a big part of early challenge seasons, and producing All Stars (idk when I found this out, but I know he had something to do with it), but aside from that, and having no personal attachment to those things, I don’t always find him genuinely entertaining or fun. He tries really hard for the camera this season, and really plays up his role as the ‘godfather’, which comes across as a little cringe and overdone at times. He’s ridiculously in-shape though, and I’d be surprised if he didn’t win an AS season.
Jemmye: Jemmye is the one person on this cast I was a bit shocked to see. Almost like, Faith on the US team in WotW1 levels of shocked. She feels a little out of place in this cast, which is a little strange because she debuted at a similar time to Jonna, but Jonna feels like a better fit. Perhaps because Jemmye continued to be quite prominent on the main show up until quite recently. With that out of the way, I think she was fine throughout the season. Alongside Darrell, I’d bet she had one of the highest confessional counts all season, and I have always appreciated her narration capabilities so I think that’s completely fine. I also think she performed unexpectedly well at times, both at certain stages in the final and at some dailies.
Alton: Alton is someone I predicted on this season but didn’t genuinely expect to see, so I was surprised to see him here after his experience on Bots2. I can tell this season was a much better fit for him though, with much of the youthful partying and drama gone. I think he was a pretty good contestant this season. He still has a little of that trademark arrogance and doesn’t always come across the best, but he’s a fantastic partner to the everyone in the final, even whilst taking Aneesa’s yelling, and always remains a good sport. I also loved how he picked Aneesa to come into elimination with him, giving her some respect, and surprising her at the same time. I also loved the little Syrus and Alton drama and hope we get to see it continue in AS2.
Ruthie: Loved seeing Ruthie back as well this season - it’s been a huge amount of time since seeing her. A very, VERY low-key season for her overall though. I was a bit disappointed to never see too much from her, especially because I remember her for her powerhouse performances in those early seasons (especially that line-drop challenge challenge, forget its name). She remains fun throughout though, and I loved when she called out Aneesa, but she ends up performing surprisingly poorly in the final, at least compared to my expectations. If she gets to come back on another season I’d love to see the edit showcase her a bit more.
Big Easy: Much like Mark, Big Easy is a contestant who has not changed at all. He still has this weirdly misplaced arrogance and attitude that makes him comes across extremely poorly at times. I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for him, because he debuted in my first season and continued to have a storyline over the few after that, but I can’t really excuse how he talks to some people, particularly in the final. Also, how he tried to convince Jemmye to quit the food portion so he could quit too. Saying that, he has some good moments this season as well. He has some surprising puzzle performances, one quote in particular which rocked me and had me dying, and I appreciated his storyline of ‘finishing a final’, and that he was able to accomplish that.
Aneesa: This feels like a MUCH better spot for Aneesa to stay as opposed to the main challenge. I actually thought she was quite likeable again this season (after thinking so on DA too), albeit it seemed she was having even more fun here. Yes, we get the EXACT SAME STORY as the main show ‘I get booted before the final every time, I can never win, this is my season’, which is old and a bit dry, but she had a few moments which I found quite sweet - her reaction to getting picked by Alton as a preferred partner into elimination. Her reaction to making the final, etc. She’s never going to win, and has to drop that thought (and those confessionals), but I didn’t mind her this time.
SIDENOTE: I can’t believe I’m STILL talking about finalists. Pretty crazy that half the cast makes the final.
Derrick: Has Derrick always been this cringe? I think he might be my least favourite contestant this season, without a doubt. The whole season is just him being a bit of a cartoon character and playing up to the camera, or sucking up to Mark. It’s not a great look and not really how I remembered Derrick from way back. Hopefully it’s a one-off and he comes back with a bit more maturity, but was really not a fan of his at all this seaosn.
Jisela: Jisela was another contestant I didn’t really remember. And I went on a bit of a rollercoaster with her this season. I initially adored her after that first episode - coming in as a bit of an underdog and putting in a fantastic, gutsy performance at the first challenge to prove herself. I think she had a really nice storyline there. Over the course of the season I soured a little though. She had a whole bunch of seemingly misplaced anger towards to Kendal which I didn’t appreciate, but also a weird and uncalled for reaction to Aneesa ‘not giving her her first choice’ into elimination, ending their friendship over it?!? Did the cameras not show something here? She’s quite funny though, has a bubbly personality and some good confessionals.
Nehemiah: Is dead to me after pulling Kendal into her THIRD elimination and sending her home before the final. Up until that point I was really enjoying his return. His win against Teck was solid, and he was injecting a little bit of drama into the house. I’ve always enjoyed his personality and think he speaks well and is able to tell a story. Bummed that his season ended with the aforementioned Kendal thing though as it has soured me on him a little, especially when he was the number one person saying ‘new people should go into eliminations’ - a bit hypocritical.
Kendal: I couldn’t tell you a thing about Kendal from Inferno, but I adored her this season. She was an underdog from the get-go, with the entire house hating on her non-stop (do we have details on why this is btw?). That automatically endeared me to her, who doesn’t love an underdog story, but she went on to be a solid competitor. She wins two eliminations, both of which aren’t super easy, and goes in a THIRD time in a season with only six eliminations. She’s good at dailies as well, and has a really enjoyable, down to earth personality. I love how real she feels, which is actually a bit of a theme this season, aside from a few exceptions in the cast. Completely robbed, deserved a place in that final. Hope she’s back for AS2.
Laterrian: Laterrian went from being an absolute nobody to me, to one of my favourites coming out of this season. I loved everything about him. His drive, his determination, his fleeting aggression, his need to win no matter what. He’s such a real friend to those in the house, speaking up for and supporting Syrus with the Alton altercation, and then being the ONLY person to happily throw their name in the ring to be Katie’s partner - so much humility and grace in how he handled that situation and resulting loss. He also had a fantastic showing against Ace and in the mini-final. I think Laterrian has turned into a serious winning threat.
Katie: I’m a massive Katie fan and continued to love her this season. She’s just fantastic. You can tell she has definitely matured and grown as a person, and she’s often biting her tongue, but we still get so many memorable moments from her - the many times she had to fall from heights and flashed back to Cutthroat, her fight with Trishelle, and her trademark dry humour. Katie is probably someone I don’t expect to see on AS2. She seems like she enjoyed herself this season but is maybe happy with where her story is at, and whilst I love her, I have to agree. She’s had a good run and this is a great season for her to end with, if that is the case. Quotes from her below for sure.
Syrus: Really enjoyed Syrus this season. I don’t remember a huge amount from him, even though I HAVE seen him on a few seasons, but despite being an earlier boot he’s memorable here. I loved his relationship with Beth, really appreciated his drive to win, and loved the little rivalry he developed against Alton. He got SO unlucky with his injured leg, and then heading into an elimination which involved landing on said leg. Regardless I loved that his ego got in the way and he called out Alton for that elimination when he could have had anyone else. Was a great storyline, hope to see him on AS2-3.
Beth: Beth came back this season to prove she’s matured, I think. I always hated Beth on the show, I could never enjoy her and just found her grating and annoying. But she’ so different this season, and I think accomplishes a lot in improving my view on her. She’s more mature, she’s likeable, and she avoids all the drama and crap she used to stir up in the past. I loved seeing glimpses of her family, and think she got a little screwed with the sudden shift to double eliminations. Much like Katie I could see this being her only AS appearance with a young family at home, but we’ll see. If it is, it’s a great place to leave things. Loved her humility in defeat, and how that was juxtaposed to Syrus’ swearing and anger. She clearly had a great time this season.
Teck: My first season seeing Teck, I believe. The only person on this cast that I’d never seen before (even though I didn’t remember a few others). I could not get enough of him. Teck is absolutely hilarious. He’s fantastic at confessionals, such a shit-stirrer and so entertaining. He put in a genuinely strong elimination performance against Neh, coming THIS close to taking that win. A bit of a quote machine in his short time on this season, very reminiscent of Darrell, and gone way too soon. Because he hasn’t done ANY seasons I’ve seen, I expect he may be one and done with AS1, but I hope I’m wrong and he is back again!
Arissa: Arissa has a crazy few episodes on this season. She turns from hippie, chilled, weed-food lady who prays to the sun into this swearing, loud quitter in the span of one episode and it’s ridiculously memorable and fun. She’s a great early boot.
Ace: I actually feel so bad for Ace. He’s never performed that well on the show, but my heart just broke for him this season. He seems like such a pure soul. Loved how he didn’t even want the money for himself, but to donate, and how he said he missed his dog. So sadddd and was absolutely brutalised by LT in that elimination.
Trishelle: omfg Trishelle has not changed at ALL. She had me in the first half though, not gonna lie. She starts off so strong, with an apology to Aneesa for what happened on Rivals 2, but that quickly devolves into CRAZINESS when she unleashes on Katie for ‘not coming right up to her’, which in turn sets Katie off briefly. She’s promptly sent into elimination, and looses with humility, taking her trademark brand of insanity home with her. A short stint, but so in-character.
The challenges
The dailies
Dailies were so different to what we’ve grown used to on the main show. They are so much more simple and low-key, no explosions or over-production, and it work so well. It’s such a return to form imo.

Deep Blue Dive is a great start to the season, and involves swimming out quite far in deeper water, and diving for numbers which are used to solve math equations. This was HILARIOUS, with almost every contestant getting rescued at some point. Great commentary from Teck here and really nice scenery. A good opener.
Ancient Challenge History is the first trivia in quite a few seasons that I haven’t zoned out a little whilst watching. All questions are based around the history of the challenge, which was fantastic to play along with. I wished they would have shown all the questions rather than skipping through, and think it was a bit of a strange choice to base falling on weight, as some people could get three wrong answers and some only two, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. And Ruthie had an impressive knowledge of the show considering how long it has been since she was on.
Melt Away is such a call back to old challenges, involving melting a huge block of ice, in teams, in any way possible. It flops a little, because TJ has to introduce hammers after the contestants aren’t able to make any dents, but it’s a silly little challenge that’s memorable, if gross.
On The Ropes is so simplistic but I love the little twists it introduced. Contestants are in teams and have to make their way between two platform using a series of four ropes. After completing a leg of the challenge, a contestant can release a rope from the other team, reducing the number of ropes they can use and sending some people down into the water. A really fun challenge.
Connect Em All is a fantastic mini-challenge, with puzzle checkpoints, endurance, and strength all involved. Some really food performances from individuals here, loving seeing LT take the win.
Escape The Room might, strangely, be my favourite daily of the season, which is strange because it’s so simple. In teams of four, players are placed into a floating shipping container on top of a trapdoor. They each have a puzzle in front of them, but the trapdoors open one by one from right to left, and whichever team completes the most puzzles wins. I just loved the fear introduced by the trapdoors, and also the visuals of people getting suddenly dumped out. Easy has a surprise win here, being the only one to solve the puzzle.
Rib Cage Pass is the most similar to a current day challenge, and also my least favourite this season. It involves navigating a simple beam obstacle course down the side of a moving semi truck, delivering balls from one end to another.

The eliminations
Eliminations are closer to what we’ve seen on the main show, but it’s a curated choice of games, all of which are interesting and fun to watch played.

Pole Wrestle starts the season and is an absolute blow-out in LT’s favour as he crushes Ace. It’s a classic for a reason, loved seeing it here.
Knot So Fast is another classic, and very welcome here as well this season. A great win by Kendal, the first of two for her.
Going Out Of Tile involved Nehemiah and Teck each having to consume two Carolina Reaper peppers before having to enter a ceramic cage and punch out your coloured tiles. It’s a little weak, probably the weakest of all eliminations this season, but it’s entertaining. Also, I was so confused when TJ was pulling out the peppers. Why was he so suss about it, putting on a glove and then pulling this random bag out of his pocket lmao.
Over and Under is the first of our double eliminations, a truly gruelling challenge. It involves a sequence of four walls with hollow insides, covered in plasterboard. As a team, one of each duo must climb and go over each wall, with a ball, whilst the other punches through the wall and goes under. They need to deliver five balls this way, from one end to the other, before winning. Strength and endurance are both required here, and everyone involved puts in a great amount of effort. The Syrus / Alton rivalry comes to fruition as well. Good elimination, perhaps my favourite this season.
Pull Me Over is pedestal tug of war, and one we’ve seen in the past, such as when Jordan absolutely embarrassed Josh. Laterrian selflessly volunteers to go into elimination, like a madman, alongside Katie, and unfortunately is not able to pull out the win against Mark and Kendal. I would have been sad to see Kendal go here, but I wanted LT and Katie to stay in the game so bad. Proud of them to at least take the first round though.
Ring Cling is a bit weak in design, largely because it removes any agency Jisela and Kendal had in the game. Not only did Kendal get dragged into her third elimination by Nehemiah, but then she gets and elimination where it’s essentially all up to him to win it for them. It involves using a series of chains and hoops to form makeshift ladder up a wall, with first person to ring a bell winning. Jisela is injured form the get-go, and unable to stand on her foot, and Big Easy SOMEHOW goes on to clutch up and beat Nehemiah. It’s a hilarious outcome, but losing Kendal to it is rough.

The final
This final was really special to me. I haven’t enjoyed a final so much in so long.
Everyone involved was having the best time, and they were all so supportive and uplifting to eachother. Everyone was a fantastic partner, outside of Big Easy - Alton, Yes, Darrell and Mark all showcasing how to treat and support your partner. Everyone is keen for the win and trying their hardest.
I’m usually not a fan of staged finals but the approach taken here was fantastic and kept things really fair. Instead of stages being timed, and leading to an arbitrary advantage at the next stage, all stages were scored with points, 5/4/3/2/1 depending on placements. The entire first day was ran in duos, with partners rotating between every stage. I was initially thinking this was an insanely smart way to make a one-winner final fair. Day 2 goes onto ruin this, but Day 1 is incredibly smart in keeping things even. There’s a bunch of running, swimming and cycling through beautiful jungle and waterways, with stages between involving eating, assembling bicycles, puzzles, and the overnight endurance portion.
Day 2 is a straightforward long race up a mountain, and at this point the final becomes completely individual, ensuring a male would take home the crown - this is annoying, and my least favourite part of the final. Points from Day 1 STILL MATTERED though.
Overall, despite one-winner, it’s still a fantastic final and one I really enjoyed watching.
Random remaining thoughts from throughout the season

Mentioned above but the inclusion of uncensored swearing this season is incredible - so much more expression from everybody.
The house was such a throwback - the pictures, the quotes, the named helmets. So cool to see.

Aneesa: ‘Ace looks like he’s getting plunged. Like in a toilet’
TJ: ‘Who said: I will cut you with words’ Katie: ‘it sounds like Coral’ Aneesa: ‘KATIE’ Katie: ‘who was it?’ Aneesa: ‘ME, AND YOU WERE THERE!’

Kendall v Trishelle ‘Listen To Your Heart’ - one of many great musical moments, and the first I’ll note down here.
Arissa trying to summon the sun had me dead
The Jonna butt scooting montage along the rope was your standard ‘empowering’ moment, and I love that it was upended, and the music cutofff, as KellyAnne JUST beats her to the end and drops her rope.
It seemed like TJ was having such a great time this season - he was always smiling or laughing. It was great to see.
The first revote. TJ: ‘Alright Darrell we’re going to start with you’ Darrel: ‘Oh you motherf*cker’
I loved how much history this season pulled on - so much of what happened on RRW and the early challenge seasons mattered here. That’s something I think the main show has lost.
Arissa actually goes out in a crazy way, saying the whole house is living foul, and if ‘she can’t box’ she doesn’t want any part of it. ‘F*ck you, I’m done, you can kiss my motherf*cking ass, and that’s my motherf*cking game’
TJ drops a ‘don’t take care, hope to see you never’ - um, where was this last season for Fessy
Alton leaving Syrus’ handshake hanging, and then Syrus sipping on water from a wineglass. What a mood.
So many hook-ups this season - more than we’ve seen on the regular show lately. Jisela and Alton, Aneesa and LT, etc
Aneesa so flattered and emotional that she would be first picked by Alton - it was as sweet moment.
Derrick to Syrus: ‘don’t jump like that, hang off the side, you’re going to f*cking hurt yourself’
The I NEED A HERO needle drop for Syrus’ perseverance and elimination attempt was epic.
Syrus fired up at the end. ‘I’m not done, I need a f*cking physical 1:1 with that motherf*cker’ - please give it to us next season
‘Paramount’ - TJ looks to camera ‘see what I did there’
Here I Go Again by Whitesnake as Katie waits for her trapdoor to drop. Flashbacks to her past falls. Yes saying ‘Keep your elbows in’ - it was SO GOOD. Editing top tier.
After Katie falls you can see Mark offscreen ask if she’s ok and she says yes - there’s so much love between the cast this season, it’s great.
Laterrian is such a real one for being the only one to go up to Katie and say she can call his name out. ‘You call me in and I’ll come down and let the dog out’ - everyone else with excuses was a bit pathetic.
‘Would I be able to sleep at night knowing I had a friend in need and didn’t help? Hell no’ - badass
Nehemiah saying ‘I’m not scared of you. Nobody is’. Easy: ‘You should’ve been. When I sent your ass home in motherf*cking Duel 1, cousin’ - I know he’s boasting about a nothing elimination, but the line itself absolutely destroys Neh. It almost had me spit-take. It was so good. Even reading it back has me laughing. He really ‘cousined’ him.
I mentioned above but the season is TOO SHORT! We needed just a few more eliminations I think, things were over as soon as they began.
‘When TJ tells us we’re pairing up with the girls I’m pretty stoked. I mean, I’d rather them than Big Easy’
Yes waiting on finishing his tangram to secure himself a good kayaker, making sure he wouldn’t be purged, was an incredibly smart move from him. The first of many this final. He was switched on.

Easy and KA last Minute overtake for the final spot over Jisela and Derrick - I was SO happy. Jisela and Derrick deserved to be first out, and whilst Easy performed awfully at the puzzle and deserved it too, KellyAnne absolutely did not. Jisela and Derrick both couldn’t kayak, so fairs fair.

Darrell JOGGING up the hill carrying Ruthie to secure first place in the stage was epic.
Carolina Reapers knocking down half the cast - these probably shouldn’t have been included in the final right? Becayuse gross food is gross food, but people have different spice tolerances.
KellyAnne pulling DARRELL up the hill - she was fantastic at this stage.
‘Flagpole Sitta’ aka ‘I’m not Sick’ during the gross food portion was great, as was Alton treating the food like a delicacy.
Easy trying to convince Jemmye to quit so he doesn’t need to eat was such a scummy move. Loved that Jemmye saw right through him and persevered.
Alton: ‘I’m done with Yes’ fake positivity BS, I’m done with KellyAnne complaining, but I’m hanging in here for Jonna.’ - loved that he stayed up and let Jonna sleep for as long as possible.
TJ riding in on a horse for Day 2 had my dying. And the fact that it kept trotting away.
Yes quickly making two walking sticks and then shedding some layers - he is so switched on, and these choices probably clutched him this win.

Conclusion
So yeah, I bloody loved this season. I had so much fun and was smiling from ear to ear all season long. It’s such a great love letter to the show, and I’m beyond excited for AS2 and AS3, if they are more of the same. A great cast, good challenges, a good final, amazing music and uncensored swearing, and a cool new winner. Slightly marred by the one winner final and some other nitpicks, but it’s an A-Tier season. SO MUCH FUN.
Next up will unfortunately be S37, even though I badly want to skip straight to AS2. I’m staying chronological! So check below for my predictions for the next season, and please let me know your thoughts on this season!

TL;DR AT THE END. Also a Poll
This is a complicated situation and I need to vent, so this post is probably gonna be a doozy but bear with me.
Before I explain the breakup I should give some context about the relationship in general. I'm 22F and he's 23M, and we met on hinge almost exactly 1 year ago on memorial day. He broke up with me on the 10th of May after dating just 10 months and 10 days of living together.
Since the day we met we hit it off completely, and the pace of the relationship was going really fast. We couldn't help it, everything was perfect. Before we actually started dating though, we hit a bump. He asked me out, but I was still finishing up a situationship and I didnt want to commit until I knew I could give him everything. He took this as me not being interested (I didnt explain myself very well), so one day he suddenly texted me saying he doesn't want to see me anymore and blocked me everywhere. He liked me a lot and got scared. This was a wake up call for me- I realized I was about to lose an amazing guy so I did something a little creepy and went to his friends house to ask him to text him for me asking for a second chance (I did not know where he lived yet, but he had taken me to his friends place before). It worked though! We met at the place we had our first date and so began the best 10 months of my life.
Again, one big thing about our relationship is how fast it went. We nosedived into love and for most of it it seemed like HE was the one more infatuated. We were obsessed with eachother and spent so much time together. I could list every thing that worked in our relationship but this post is already so long. In just 10 months we formed a deep connection, made amazing memories, and overcame obstacles. We never fought. He prioritized me completely and I could see how much he admired me genuinely, how vulnerable he could be with me. Our time together was so dense it felt like we were together longer.
All this might have been our downfall. He graduated college in December, and since NOVEMBER he had been struggling to find a job. His parents finally hired a coach for him, and in March he was at my apartment when he FINALLY had a successful interview and got hired. The issue though, was that the job is in Dallas. I lived in Austin. He lived in San Antonio.
I was immediately overwhelmed. I had just moved into my apartment in January, and I wasn't initially optimistic about the idea of moving again or going long-ish distance. He prioritized me so much though, that he offered to wait for a job in Austin. After so much struggle to find a job that he broke down in front of his parents! This really moved me, and I decided I'm willing to make the leap and move in with him. He also seemed not only ready, but very excited about taking the next step. We couldn't wait.
He moved there before me mid April to get started at his job and find an apartment for us. My landlord lets me end my lease and I put in my 2 weeks at work to prepare for moving in on the 30th. Up until the very day I moved he expressed how excited he was.
Finally the 30th comes and I'm up there with him and I'm over the moon. I'm falling more in love with him and I'm so incredibly happy. Since around the second day though, I noticed a slight change in behavior from him. He was irritable, and didn't seem as happy as I was. His affection didn't seem as genuine, more routine. His big complaint at this time was about not having a lot of "free time" since we still had a lot on our plate the next couple weekends getting settled in as well as him working during the week. I tried not to overthink it though or assume that meant time away from me. Our connection was still there and I could tell he still loved me. He was still making an effort and talking about our future.
After day 6 it actually got a bit better. He initiated more affection and it seemed genuine. But, I still had a feeling he wasn't really enjoying spending quality time with me. At this time I also noticed that his libido was very low. This is the beginning of the end.
The night before he broke up with me we had a big conversation. After dinner, he said that after he plays 1 round of a game that we can... yknow. I was like, sweet! I'll chill on the couch until he's ready. After he finishes the game though he starts watching YouTube, and it's getting late. My gut tells me he's avoiding intimacy and I get frustrated. I walk up to him asking if I should just take a shower and go to bed. He's immediately frustrated after I walk up to him and proclaims, "I think we are experiencing a disconnect." This really shocks me and he notices, so he scrambles to take it back and suggests we sit down to talk.
I regret how needy and frustrated I was during this conversation. But it stemmed from me feeling insecure and rejected in general. I was convinced he wasn't attracted to me anymore (even though thats not the case and there's evidence against that.) He explained that he just has a low sex drive at the moment because there's been a lot on his plate and he sees me all the time now. He accidentally said some things that triggered my insecurity in this convo, and I ended up crying. But the conversation ended with us understanding eachothers situation. When I first started working full time, my libido was also low. In my case, he understood that I'm very happy with the new living situation plus I'm not working atm so my libido is higher than usual. It seemed we reached an understanding, but when I asked how he felt after the convo he said he felt "peculiar." I think part of me knew that's when he detached. He held me when we went to bed though.
I woke up at noon the next morning, May 10th, and immediately after waking up he came home for lunch early. I was still groggy when he sat on the couch and said "we need to talk."
He's breaking up with me just 10 days after I moved in with him. He said the conversation the night before made him realize that it's not working. The first reason he gave me was bullshit. He said that his libido isn't going to go up, and that he believed I would eventually snap at him. He said we're not sexually compatible. I won't go into detail but that simply isn't true. I called him out on that and then he said that's not the only reason.
His other reason hurts the most. He said that he simply is not happy anymore, and that I'm no longer his top priority. It got to the point where he dreads spending time with me because he would rather spend time alone. He said that's not fair to me and that he won't put me through that any longer. I mentioned how sudden this is, and he said he'd actually been thinking about this for the past few weeks- and that the 10 days we lived together was him trying to make it work.
Despite all this he said he still loves me. So I begged him to not give up. I tried to tell him that when I get a job he'll have more free time, he said no. I tried to offer going back to the way we were with me in my own apartment, he said no. "I'm not doing that 'on a break' shit." He said. He also said he doesn't want to live with ANYONE for a LONG time. I pressed that he must have lost SOME feelings to be doing this to me, and he replied "I lost the spark, I guess."
This is why I'm so confused. After doing research it seems like he likely started going through relationship burnout. He just started a full time job for the first time ever AND he moved to a new location, that has to be the reason right? That would explain why breaking up had crossed his mind before we even moved in together- when he was still head over heels.
But why would he give up if he truly loved me? Was his love not as strong as it seemed? Was he doomed to never make it past the honeymoon stage? Did he discover that he just doesn't want to be with ME? He seemed so sure that this was permanent when he was breaking up with me. That the relationship had failed. How could he be willing to throw everything away for good? Not only that, but to kick me out of our apartment after I had just moved. He said this is the worst thing he's ever done and that he'll be guilty of this his whole life. He must have really really wanted to break up.
But I also have hope. What we had was truly special and we're so compatible. He said I was perfect for him. Its almost like we merged into 1 being. I'm willing to build trust again and start anew if he is. Maybe we just need time apart to grow. My fear is though, that even if he changes his mind and regrets this he may never have the courage to reach out after doing this to me. Maybe he wouldn't be able to live with the guilt or maybe he believes he ruined things beyond repair.
So here I am back in Austin living with my family. I drove back the same day he broke up with me and we've been NC since the 18th after I finished moving back out. No job, no apartment, no boyfriend. I really need help understanding this situation.
I'm going to try and move on regardless of what happens in the future, but it would be nice to have a 3rd party perspective on what to expect.
And it would be nice if he's to one to chase me down this time.
TL;DR: My boyfriend finally got a job after months of searching since graduation, but it's in Dallas while we're in Austin/San Antonio. We decided to move in together, but he breaks up with me after just 10 days of living together due to relationship burnout in the face of starting work full time/moving cities. He says it's because he became unhappy with not enough free time and he stopped enjoying spending time with me/seeing me all the time. We had previously had a very deep, loving relationship with no problems and were both excited to take this step in our relationship. He said he still loves me, but he believes the relationship failed. At the time it seems he has no intention of ever getting back together. But is there a possibility of reconnection in the future?

Isaak POV
Things had just settled down around the haven, the Empress and her ladies, and almost all the drakewardens had just left towards the horizon, leaving them with two drakewardens who were apparently supposed to be tending to the eggs they had given to Vitmori. Speaking of Vitmori, it looks like he walks among them now. Isaak wasn't too sure what to make of the man; he had listened to the few stories Zasutir had shared of Vitmori's world and the things Vitmori had to survive. Yet, when he saw him, yeah, he could see what Zasutir talked about; the pressure he exuded was on par with veteran adventurers and even paladins of the church he had seen passing by while serving as a guard. Despite the kindness Vitmori displayed, Isaak felt that something was off; he felt Vitmori was far too put together for a man who had slaughtered thousands of undead and slain several dozen men and women. Isaak couldn't even imagine the burden of killing another sentient being, let alone the supposed kill count Vitmori managed to accrue.
It unnerved him, though; at the same time, he couldn't help but wonder how strong someone would have to be to achieve the feats he had heard about, especially as a human in a world without mana. Though as he set up by the old fireplace outside to start sharpening his blade, he spotted a crowd forming as Vitmori and Reonim left the longhouse. The duo made their way into a clearing and started talking, though the fact that people were beginning to cluster around had piqued his curiosity. Making his way over, he sidled up beside Cinco and spoke up. "What's going on here?" He asked in a hushed tone while crossing his arms.
Cinco flashed a grin as he looked at Isaak and was quick to explain. "It seems we're about to get a demonstration on how Vitmori fights." He said as his ears waggled with anticipation, though Cinco looked vaguely startled for a moment but immediately relaxed as the very earth shifted, a sort of sparring ring with a fence forming in mere moments, separating the people from the duo.
Isaak glanced over at Cinco curiously. "You okay?" He asked as the others started to spread out more evenly around the quickly formed ring.
Cinco flashed a bit of a smile. "Yeah, sorry, I just felt the ground shifting; I didn't realize Vitmori could shape the earth so quickly without chanting or preparing a spell. I wasn't expecting it at all." He explained before looking back to the forming spectacle.
Isaak nodded intently, deciding to step closer and watch the fight as closely as he could manage, his hands resting on the stone fence, though he quickly realized he found himself next to Miriam, who seemed to notice him at the same time and greeted him with a smile. "Hey, Isaak." She said quietly with a small hand wave.
Isaak choked on his words for longer than a moment but smiled in response. "Hey, Miri..." He said with a smile on his face.
"And where's my 'hey'?" Trisha asked with an amused look on her face as she peeked around from the other side of Miriam before settling against the stone fence.
He didn't even realize she was there and cleared his throat. "Hey Trisha, what are you all up to?" He asked as he managed to properly collect himself now that he had a topic to focus on, glancing over at Reonim and Vitmori as they seemingly discussed some more, having waved Zasutir over.
Trisha grinned as she looked out at Vitmori and Reonim. "Well, I gotta see how Vitmori fights so I can get an idea of what sort of weapons he uses. I'm the one who'll be equipping him after all." She explained before gesturing over at Sylvia, who was on the other end of the ring, standing with Zasutir. "She's likely doing the same regarding what sort of armor would suit him best." She mentioned before settling on the stone fence again.
Miriam nodded intently at Trisha before looking over to Isaak. "Vitmori asked me to outfit all those in his service; that likely means Vitmori himself, so I'm gonna get his measurements once he's done." She explained as she clapped her hands together. "Besides, it might be fun to watch. There's not much to do by way of entertainment nowadays, and watching your sparring sessions are always good to pass the time with." She enthused cheerfully.
Isaak nodded before looking away as he could feel his cheeks burn at the idea that Miriam had been watching him get his butt handed to him most days to pass the time. "I... I see." He replied slowly before focusing on Vitmori and Reonim.
"Are you sure you don't want armor? I know this is just a spar, but why take the hit if you don't need to?" Vitmori asked Reonim as he looked up at the bullkin.
Reonim offered a confident smile. "I appreciate the concern Vitmori; however, I'll be protected without armor." He stated before continuing as he noticed Vitmori's confused expression. "It's called barkskin, though I can actually go up to stoneskin thanks to you improving my manaheart." Though at Vitmori's continued confusion, he decided to explain a little more. "My mana flows through my body and forms a protective shield in my skin, it takes effort to maintain, but it can protect a warrior if they're caught out of armor or reinforce what armor they have."
At that, Vitmori nodded in understanding. "I see, so I won't worry too much about holding back." He said with amusement as he held out his hands, piles of stone falling from seemingly out of nowhere. He then plunged his hands into the stone, he first drew out what looked like a blunt dagger, tucking it into the waistband of his clothes, next drawing out what looked to be five stones in the shape of throwing knives, tucking those away in his sleeve when he then drew out a stone short sword. "You use an oversized great sword, right?" Vitmori asked as he shaped the remaining stone into a weapon similar to one that Reonim is usually seen carrying before handing it off with a little bit of a struggle. "Damn, I really don't want to be hit by that." Vitmori mentioned with a grin. Reonim responded with a chuckle as he hefted the stone blade onto his shoulder.
Zasutir spoke up once it appeared Vitmori and Reonim were readied. "Alright, we shall have a good, clean fight. The terms of victory are as follows..." He started to say, gesturing to Reonim first. "If Reonim is able to hit Vitmori three times, he wins." Zasutir then gestured over to Vitmori. "If Vitmori is able to knock Reonim off his feet, he wins." With the rules established, Zasutir snapped his fingers before calling out. "Begin!"
At the command, Reonim moved deceptively fast, swinging the massive stone sword in a wide horizontal arc; Vitmori seemed to just barely duck under the swing, having dropped to his hands and knees before rolling to his feet as Reonim brought down a follow-up vertical swing which dented the earth where Vitmori was just moments ago. Vitmori retaliated by flinging out two stone-throwing knives, their dulled edges impacting along Reonim's forearm and wrist, earning a wince from the bullkin as he retaliated with the greatsword in a downward diagonal swing towards Vitmori.
Vitmori moved to dodge, but the sheer wind pressure of the stone blade sent Vitmori tumbling to his hands and knees as he fell to the side. The man had a rather surprised expression on his face from what happened, though it was immediately replaced by an amused grin as he got to his feet. Now drawing his stone short sword, he decided to close the distance with a fierce lunge.
Reonim reacted quickly again, bringing his greatsword around and smashing Vitmori's sword with a downwards vertical slash, following it up with a hard kick to Vitmori's chest while he was vulnerable in the interrupted lunge, which sent the man flying against the stone fence.
The stone fence held against the impact as Vitmori pushed off the fence and got back to his feet, seemingly fine after the impact. "So that's how it's done." He exclaimed to nobody in particular, taking out the stone dagger he tucked away and fusing the remains of the stone blade into the dagger, making the knife a little longer but not quite the same length as the short sword it was before.
Reonim respectfully allowed Vitmori to gather himself before lunging forward, the wind starting to swirl visibly around the stone blade as he did a wide overhead swing, bringing the sword down on Vitmori.
Though instead of dodging away from the blade this time, Vitmori dramatically picked up speed, leaning into the winds of the sword before sliding between Reonim's legs while smacking the stone knife against the bullkin's calves. Though as Vitmori went to get back to his feet, he stumbled and rolled, losing his footing as the speed burst he managed to use a moment ago appeared to run out and ruined his momentum.
Reonim was quick on the backswing, pivoting on one of his hooves as he brought the stone sword down on Vitmori. However, he was anticipating Vitmori to have moved faster to avoid the swing; instead, there was a resounding crack and a sickening crunch as Reonim cleaved through Vitmori's waist.
Screams of panic were heard from the crowd as Isaak's skin went cold, wondering if he just witnessed a death. This was supposed to be a sparring match between two great warriors; how could it have gone this badly?!
Reonim looked relatively calm for someone who just killed someone, though Zasutir was quick to move, leaping over the stone fence and hurrying over to Vitmori's broken body. "Vitmori! Vitmori, are you okay?" He asked as he grabbed Vitmori's torso by the shoulder, turning him around.
Surprisingly, Vitmori responded quickly enough as he sighed audibly. "Damn, I thought I had a chance in the end..." He said, disappointment clear in his voice before he seemed to focus on the moment and looked over to Zasutir. "Whoa, hey, when did you get here?" He asked curiously before furrowing his brows. "Why can't I feel my legs?" He asked, much to Zasutir's apparent confusion as the lizardkin stammered a bit. Being somewhat propped up by Zasutir, Vitmori looked down at himself and seemed somewhat surprised. "Ah... That's why I can't feel my legs... Huh, well, I suppose that's my loss." He said as he looked over at Reonim before glancing up to Zasutir. "Do you mind... Er... Bringing my legs over? I think I should be able to reattach them myself."
Zasutir still looked rather confused but nodded as he gingerly laid Vitmori on his back when he stepped away, going over and grabbing the lower half of Vitmori's body. Though as Zasutir grabbed one of the legs, he immediately realized what was going on as he looked at the others. "He's made of wood. He'll be fine." He explained as he brought the legs over, flipping them around right side up before lining them up to Vitmori's torso.
Reonim looked over at the others who had been watching the fight and quirked a brow curiously. "Did you all not know he was made of wood?" He asked, plunging the end of the large stone sword into the dirt and leaning against it as he seemed rather relaxed despite cleaving a man in half just a few moments ago.
The others needed a moment to wind back down, the shock and subsequent reveal having been a jarring spin of emotions as they now lingered to watch Vitmori put himself back together with morbid curiosity. Vitmori, for his part, set about reconnecting his torso with his legs. Threads of solid wood started reaching out from his waist and had made contact with his legs, similar threads stretching out at that point as the legs were slowly scooted through the dirt until they fused back together. Within moments he managed to start wiggling his toes before pushing up to his feet; he wobbled for a moment, nearly losing his balance, though he caught himself quickly enough before approaching Reonim and holding his hand out. "You were excellent; thank you for showing me how much I've got to work on." He said with a cheerful smile as Reonim gladly met his hand and shook it.
Isaak simply shook his head at the sight before looking over to Miriam and Trisha, addressing Trisha in particular. "Well, what did you make of all that?"
Trisha seemed vaguely unnerved before looking over to Isaak and shrugging a bit. "Not sure. From what I could tell, Vitmori isn't particularly weak, but Reonim simply outclassed him in overall ability." She considered, gradually collecting herself as she spoke. "I think Vitmori likes to be quick on his feet, preferring small blades and throwing knives based on what he made for himself. However, I have a feeling that is what he resorted to using out of convenience. Ultimately, I'll have to ask him what he would like for himself." She explained as she pushed away from the stone fence.
Miriam seemed to have calmed down from earlier, looking rather embarrassed as she was one of the few to have screamed after seeing Vitmori get cleaved in two. "I think I would like to see less dismemberment in sparring matches. Otherwise, it was quite an impressive display from Reonim." She said with a small smile before looking over at Vitmori. "Not to dismiss Vitmori or anything, he performed valiantly against a much more powerful opponent. I'm certain it is only a matter of time until he is able to fight on par with a warrior like Reonim." She expressed encouragingly, though Isaak wasn't sure who she was trying to support since Vitmori was off talking with Reonim while cleaning up the sparring ring. The earth and stone shifted as it all started to sink into the ground; Trisha nearly fell over as she failed to notice the fence disappearing until it was almost too late.
Isaak smirked with amusement at Trisha having to catch herself, though he looked back over at Vitmori and Reonim. Some small part of him felt confident that he could probably take on Vitmori as he is right now. Though another part of him had to wonder; if Reonim was that strong, how powerful was Basti if she managed to slaughter Reonim before he could put up a proper fight?
