2023.06.06 14:35 Secure-Carrot9971 Current card lineup… should I downgrade anything?

Here’s my current card lineup and how I use each. My main 2 cards I use are the Amex Gold (all food purchases) and the Freedom Unlimited (all other daily). I still have the Preferred card mainly for travel protection for out of the country big trips, etc. and dining where Amex isn’t accepted, but is that overkill when FU offers similar dining and these other cards offer some decent travel protection? I also have a couple airline cards, so determining what makes most sense. Appreciate any insight!
AMEX GOLD: $250/yr - restaurants, takeout, groceries, etc. - $10 month Uber & $10 GrubHub/Cheesecake Factory gets used monthly
CHASE PREFERRED: - $95/yr - anything travel related… flights, Lyft, parking, tolls, etc…. But also have airline cards for this.. - Keep for travel insurance perks and for dining where Amex not accepted?
CHASE FR UNLIMITED: - $0/yr - all other daily purchases outside of food and travel for 1.5x… transfer to travel partners for max benefits - could use for visa accepted dining if not Preferred?
AMEX HILTON ASPIRE: $450/yr - Hilton bookings… stay 10-12 times a year for work and leisure… preferred hotel - Priority pass access, Diamond status, airline credit and hotel, free night stay yearly
UNITED EXPLORER: $95/yr - airline of choice from Chase transfer, 2x United Club visits per year, some travel protection, free bag check… fly 2-5 times per year
DELTA GOLD AMEX: $99/yr - another preferred airline, opened for big sign on bonus at time, free checked bag… fly 1-3 times per year on average

2023.06.06 14:17 Nexis4Jersey My vision for South Jersey Rail & Transit V2

Early this year I posted to the PA & NY Subreddits about expansions I had for their planned statewide rail network. I decided to go over all my Northeastern proposals and give them a slight refresh , so here is my refreshed proposal for South Jersey : 2019 post. I cut some of the pure fantasy routes while leaning into the more realistic ideas. Did some more research on the various routes that used to crisscross the region and the named Intercity services that used to link to big cities with gateway destinations. There seems to be increasing traction on the PA & DE side to advance their backlog of rail projects. The feds unleashing a tsunami amount of funding seems to fueling that trend unfortunately NJ has been slow to push any project forward aside from a few NEC projects & the Raritan Bay Bridge replacement. I used the openrailways map to comb through the all the rail lines snaking their way around the region , drawing up a reasonable proposal.

2023.06.06 13:55 jdb888 Traffic at LiveNation venues

It seems to be deliberate this year with the hard 330 pm lot open time. Previously they allowed vehicles in earlier. They often ignored the official open time to keep traffic flowing. Now they are being strict meaning to get into the show you need to be waiting on the highway near the venue by 2 pm for a chance to make it in by 4 pm. All this to try to sell the $100 early pass, which will be impossible to use since all the traffic.
This is all planned nonsense. Like the artificial chaos of boarding a plane so airlines can sell you early boarding privilege.
I feel bad the Shakedown vendors. They only get like 2 hours of business before the show.

2023.06.06 13:44 Skywhisker Have anyone traveled by plane with an electric breastpump with chargeable lithium battery?

I am trying to figure out if I can bring the power bank/charger for the breast pump with me for a work trip.
The airline's customer service is not helpful. They stated the max Watt allowed (the battery is under that) and the Lithium content allowed. I just don't know how I find the Lithium content on the battery, and apparently neither does customer service. So how will they check it then?
It is not stated in the manual for the breast pump either. I e-mailed the breast-pump brand and asked, but I haven't got an answer yet.
Any ideas?
The link is in Finnish, I'm sorry, but that is the brand of the breast pump.

2023.06.06 13:36 LincolnPilot Decisions along the way: My 3.5 year journey from a student pilot to legacy

Hello everyone!
I thought I'd share a write up of my aviation journey based around the decisions I made throughout my career progression. I think as aviators we tend to share common struggles and questions ranging from how to choose a flight school to which legacy airline to work for.
I do not present this as an exemplary footstep for anyone to follow (please don't do that - looking back, I shudder at some of my decision making), but just as a fun read and compare what you would have done / had done vs how it unfolded for me.

October of 2019: I decided to be a pilot. 30 years old with 0 experience.
Problem: I didn't have money. Options: Work and fly as I go or take out $80,000 loan at 8.99% interest rate. Decision: The loan. Reason: I thought getting into the airlines faster by taking the loan and focusing on flying would pay off more in the end. Hindsight: I probably should have done some intro flights first before signing up for 80k loan. lol
Problem: Which flight school? Option: Local flying club 61 or fancy 141 flight school. Decision: 141 '0 to hero.' Reason: I wanted to get everything done as fast as possible. I drank the kool aid often and in large quantities. Hindsight: I think I would have been just fine at the flying club. For some parts of my training, I paid $575/hr for DA-42. I shouldn't have done that. But at the same time, the 141 school did finish everything in a very timely manner. It was expensive, but it delivered.
November of 2019: things weren't going well.
Problem: Airsickness. I kept throwing up. Heavy doubts about career in flying. Options: Quit now and salvage what I can on that 80k loan or keep flying. Decision: Kept flying. Reason: I asked here on Reddit and you guys told me that it should go away. "Don't quit!" Hindsight: I am VERY glad that I didn't quit. Airsickness was a bitch - but it did indeed go away after about 25 hours.
March of 2020: Finished training. Took me about 5 months to go from 0 to CFII. 3 failed checkrides.
Problem: COVID 19. Industry came to a halt. Not many flying jobs to be had. Option: Live with my father and work another job or move to middle of nowhere Midwest to fly. Decision: Moved to Midwest to flight instruct. Reason: It would have saved a lot of money by living with my father, but I wanted to keep flying. Hindsight: This was a good decision. CFI jobs were very scarce and I decided to go where the opportunity was. I was able to build my hours while a lot of my classmates weren't so fortunate.
February of 2021: Adventure
Problem: I got fired from my flight school. Option: Look for another flight instructing job vs YOLO Alaska Decision: Drove to Alaska with 0 plans and started knocking on doors asking for a job. Reason: I was fired from my flight school over severe disagreement regarding forcing flights on students in bad weather. I didn't want to work at another flight school after that and it was impossible to find an instructor job in the middle of COVID. So I drove to Alaska in hopes of finding a job. Hindsight: What an adventure! I was just about ready to hop on a crabbing/fishing ship because I couldn't find a flying job but it worked out somehow! I became a bush pilot in a small village in Western Alaska. This was the best time of my life. I flew A LOT.
October of 2021: Regionals
Problem: Multiple offers from regionals - which one to go? Option: Envoy, Skywest, Republic, Endeavor (Piedmont rejected me - bastards!) Decision: Endeavor Reason: Earliest class date. Hindsight: Endeavor was a great regional. Training was excellent and I loved the people there. I did hate flying out of LGA/JFK though. Back then Endeavor pay was still $53/hr and I couldn't afford to live in NYC. So I lived in a camper van in Long Island area.
May of 2022: ACMI?
Problem: Job offer from Amerijet and ATI and Atlas Option: Stay at Endeavor or go fly 767 cargo Decision: Amerijet Reason: I thought 767 type rating and international wide body flying will be a better addition to my resume than flying in/out of LGA 3x a day in a CRJ. I chose Amerijet based on their very fast upgrade time and promise of a new contract soon. (lol) Hindsight: This was a very difficult decision. My mentors were absolutely torn on how to advise me on this one. Some thought staying with Endeavor and keeping the Delta flow was the safest path. Others thought that 767 is an upward movement and I shouldn't miss out on a widebody opportunity. I think I would have been fine either way, but Amerijet worked out wonderfully. I truly enjoyed my time flying long-haul cargo over the Pacific. I was able to spend a lot of time with my parents in Korea. At the legacy airline interviews, the interviewers all really liked that I had that experience on my resume.
May of 2023: Legacy - 2350 TT, 512 SIC. 3.5 years from my first flight.
Problem: Which airline to choose as my final career destination? Option: Delta, Hawaiian, Alaska, American, and Southwest. (United never called.... :( cry Decision: Hawaiian
Reason: This was perhaps the toughest decision that I had to make in my aviation journey. I lost a lot of sleep over it. Ultimately it came down to choosing between Delta and Hawaiian.
Delta was everything that I expected. Money, glory, hats, sense of elitism and pride of being part of what is now widely considered the best airline in the world. With little doubt, I was looking at years of fine successful career and accomplished life with Delta.
With that said, I was also looking at being at the bottom of 16,000 pilot group with over 50% of the seniority list being new hires since 2014 and life in one of the mainland Gotham cities. But despite all that, Delta has the best benefits and compensation package in the industry and it is hard to turn away the top legacy carrier - or so I thought.
Hawaiian ambushed me in so many pleasant ways. My interview at Hawaiian was my first time going to Hawaii and I was just blown away. It was wonderful. I felt sincere excitement of possibility of living there that I never felt about any of Delta bases. As a 34 year old single guy moving to live in base, I have no doubt that the quality of life is going to be much more desirable at Hawaiian than Delta.
Looking at seniority progression and % of widebody fleet at each company - I am intrigued by the possibility of being a widebody captain at Hawaiian many years faster than at Delta (excluding the 76 fleet on narrowbody pay at Delta). And I would have such easy access to Korea to see my parents since Hawaiian goes to Asia frequently.
The decision making process here was different from my previous decision points. Up until here, I always jumped on first opportunities that gave me better career outlook and progression. But as I was looking into my final career jump - I prioritized quality of life over everything. Money and glory was with Delta, but the life I wanted was with Hawaiian. And I want to be happy!
Hindsight: I don't know - I'll update later I guess. :)

Well Reddit - my chase is over. But my journey begins! I can only hope that I can keep up with my health to keep flying at my final destination for the next 30 years with a smile.
I cannot thank you all enough for the help and guidance you have given me over the years. Special thanks to the guys that messaged me and called me to give insightful advice whenever I posted here. You guys REALLY helped me to make those decisions.
The U.S. has a very unique and supportive aviation community that is unlike anywhere else in the world. Thank you again. I hope I can continue to grow as a pilot and as an individual to be in a position to give good advice to future pilots to keep the culture going.

2023.06.06 13:21 thefrontpageofreddit On this day in 1966, Civil Rights activist James Meredith was shot by white sniper James Aubrey Norvell during an unarmed protest March in Mississippi.

On this day in 1966, Civil Rights activist James Meredith was shot by white sniper James Aubrey Norvell during an unarmed protest March in Mississippi.
Hit the dirt! The cry came [57] years ago today, at 4:15 p.m. on June 6, 1966, just before three shotgun blasts exploded from the bushes along Highway 51 near Hernando, Mississippi. Two of the rounds found their target: James Meredith, a 32-year-old black law student who had the day before embarked on a protest march from Memphis to Jackson, Mississippi. As Meredith fell to his knees on the ground, the civil rights movement found itself at a turning point.
In 1962, Meredith had been the first black student to attend Ole Miss, another in a line of desegregation victories stretching back to Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. But now the unity of those early years was dissolving. The next three weeks would show the world just how much.
Four years had passed since Meredith had applied to transfer to the all-white University of Mississippi at Oxford. When the university rejected him despite his high grades, a federal court ruled that he could not be denied admission based on the color of his skin. Even so, the governor of Mississippi took it upon himself to travel to the campus in person that September to keep him from registering. President John F. Kennedy had to order in 500 federal marshals and 5,000 army troops to disperse a racist mob that gathered outside Meredith’s dorm. A riot on September 30 killed two bystanders and injured 168 marshals before the army overwhelmed the outraged Mississippians. Meredith, protected by armed guards, endured a year of threats and harassment before graduating in August 1963. Now, in 1966, Meredith was attending Columbia Law School in New York on scholarship, but he remembered the terror he had felt in Oxford. He decided to conquer his fear by marching through Mississippi. He hoped his example would help Mississippi’s 450,000 disenfranchised blacks confront their own anxieties and register to vote: If I can do it, maybe they can, too. An iconoclast and a loner, he chose not to invite any civil rights groups to join him. I didnt want a crowd of people to go into rural Mississippi and become a burden upon the Negroes in the area, he explained. This is crop-planting time.
Unarmed, accompanied only by six friends, and carrying a Bible and an ebony cane, he set out from Memphis June 5 on his March Against Fear. Just three years after the assassination of Medgar Evers and two since the assassination of Malcolm X, Meredith believed fate would protect him on the highways of Mississippi. I had always felt that I could stop a mob with the uplift of a hand, he said later. Because of my divine responsibility to advance human civilization, I could not die.
He had walked just 28 miles when, the very next afternoon, a sniper emerged from the bushes just inside the Mississippi state line. James Meredith! he yelled. I only want James Meredith! Meredith’s friends scattered, shouting Look out, Jim, he’s got a gun! and Hit the dirt! Meredith stood frozen as 60 birdshot pellets sprayed into his neck, legs, head, and right side. He collapsed to his knees and tried to crawl across the highway before another blast hit him. Oh, my God, he groaned. Is anyone going to help me? Fortunately, state troopers and FBI men had joined him on his second day, and they chased the gunman into the woods. They quickly returned with Aubrey James Norvell, a 40-year-old unemployed Klansman. Uncuffed and smoking a pipe, he freely confessed as police hustled him into a squad car. He would go on to serve 18 months of a five-year sentence for the shooting. Although the Associated Press mistakenly reported him dead, Meredith suffered only superficial wounds. Recovering in a Memphis hospital, he seemed to rethink his outlook. He swore never again to march unarmed, at which a friend quipped, That’s not in keeping with the nonviolent philosophy, Mr. Meredith. Who the hell ever said I was nonviolent? he answered. I spent eight years in the military and the rest of my life in Mississippi. His apparent turnaround coincided with an identical incipient shift in the civil rights movement, a shift Meredith’s shooting would soon bring to national attention. The leaders of five civil rights organizations—Stokely Carmichael of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Floyd McKissick of the Congress of Racial Equality, Roy Wilkins of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Whitney Young of the Urban League, and Martin Luther King, Jr., of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference—rushed to Meredith’s bed, asking permission to carry on the march in his name. He assented, and on June 7, 20 marchers set out to finish his 220-mile journey.

Looking to take my emergency fund out of Chase (.01%) and move it to a liquid high-yield savings account.
What bank is everyone using? The highest I see today is 5.25%, many are over 5%, but I worry about shady companies I've never heard of. Other than being FDIC insured and not having fees, what else do I look out for? Is there anything to lose when you can just move it to another bank if the rates go down? All the well-known banks are closer to 4%.

2023.06.06 12:37 boutell New US CHAdeMO chargers in May 2023

Here are all of the new US CHAdeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
There were 124 "new" CHAdeMOs added in May. To put it in perspective, there were 112 CCS chargers added in April. I think the pace of CHAdeMO rollout has stabilized, while the pace of CCS rollout is still increasing. This makes sense given that only Nissan still makes a CHAdeMO car.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
We all know that CHAdeMO is a legacy format and will eventually go away, but clearly Nissan and their partners are continuing to support it for the time being. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, you can still buy a new Leaf.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or reading these monthly reports is just frustrating in your state, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications only when new stations actually open. You can sign up at evpov.com. I built it to help EV owners like myself (especially my fellow Leaf owners). You can pick other plug types as well.
To streamline this post, multi-chargepoint locations are listed with the number of chargepoints first, so that's why the post is shorter than in previous months.

2023.06.06 12:32 boutell New US CCS chargers report for May 2023

Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:
  1. Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
  2. Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHAdeMO car, see my matching post in leaf.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
There were 222 CCS charge points added or refreshed in May 2023, which is up from 171 in April. For comparison, there were only 74 new CCS charge points in May 2022. Things are speeding up.
"What about CCS charging at Tesla superchargers?" Tesla is in the process of rolling out their "magic dock" for non-Tesla cars, but so far in very few locations. If they start doing this at scale and reporting it to the Alternative Fuels Data Center then it will be reflected here.
"What about Ford vehicles with NACS (Tesla) plugs?" They are not on sale yet. Current-generation Ford vehicles have CCS plugs. The next generation will have NACS (Tesla) plugs, but will also support CCS via an adapter.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or just prefer not to check this list monthly when new openings are rare in your area, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications as soon as they open. You can sign up at evpov.com. Or not! I don't really have a business plan here, I built it to help EV owners like myself.
To streamline this post, multi-chargepoint locations are listed with the number of chargepoints first, so that's why the post is shorter than in previous months.

2023.06.06 12:17 Tristan_Lane98 CHERUB: Maximum Security Soundtrack

Here we go again, another long winded and self indulgent analysis of the music used in a screenplay. For anyone who hasn’t seen one of these before, it’s entirely skippable and you can enjoy the screenplay without having read this. Honestly you’d probably enjoy it more without having read this first, spoilers and such below for my Max Sec screenplay as I go song by and explain my thought process and anything else that enters my mind such as what songs used to be there instead of what ended up actually there.
“California Dreamin’” by The Mamas and The Papas:
Initially in the first draft this was a placeholder, people may have noticed a trend that the first song and title song usually represent the general overarching theme of the film, not just the specific moment they are featured like most others used do. For a significant amount of time this film was actually set around Christmas time, it was going to be late November into December, however this didn’t work with the timeline for Basic Training and Lauren’s story, so seeing as I wasn’t going to put that off to the next film it had to take place in March the next year. This messed up two things, firstly the song which had initially replaced the placeholder (which was going to be a Christmas song as a sort of connection to the snow, the time setting and the ironic jolly Christmas time being entirely incongruent with the awful prison environment) and secondly the day each event takes place on, which matters more later. I went back to California Dreamin when “The Great Date Shift” occurred for two reasons, I preferred the overarching connection of the song itself, given the song is about homesickness (something Lauren would be experiencing) and specifically mentions California where unbeknownst to them would be where the climax takes place and it is a Classic American song which I was trying to use more of in this screenplay in particular due to it being the one big truly American adventure we get. Additionally I quite liked the way I wove the song into the scene diegetically as we don’t have radios or such so having to use another new way of getting music into the scene with Lauren’s delirium which is a real phenomenon as described by an ice climber who fell down a glacier and ended up stuck for days in the cold, having Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” playing round and round in his head despite the fact he hated it, so I just changed the specific song and came up with a reason for where Lauren would have heard it from. Of course because this took me 18 months to finish annoyingly another series of Stranger Things came out and then played a cover of this by The Beach Boys in that, making it (I think) the third time they’ve beaten me to using a song, so the score is 3-1 between me and them if we’re counting lol.
“Jailbreak” by AC/DC:
The title song for this one, as mentioned before links to the overarching plot concerning the jailbreak itself and also introduces AC/DC as another band to become a regular addition to future soundtracks. This is a lesser-known AC/DC track from their early days that I just really liked the sound of and thought was a funny coincidence that they could be introduced here with this and that it has the exact same name as the originally intended and then used later “Jailbreak” by Thin Lizzy was just another part of the charm behind using it.
“Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” by Elton John:
A really punchy song and another Classic British Artist, this is one I’d long had the idea of using in this specific scene, just like using “Radar Love” by Golden Earring for the Mustang drive in Class A, this was essentially a set point that I was definitely going to use and the whole rest of the film was built around it. Of course, when “The Great Date Shift” occurred it meant the scene itself went from being a Saturday to no longer being a Saturday and there wasn’t any way to move the scene to a Saturday while keeping the internal logic of the Basic Training dates with the pre-established rules of when they happen from previous films. So I’m stuck with a deeply unsatisfying day for this to happen on, oh well!
“Cold As Ice” by Foreigner:
Another late change, as it was originally going to be “Snowbound” by Genesis however I have a rule not to use the same band twice in a film and I wanted to use Genesis for the last song so it had to change. Not too much to be said about the choice here, I wanted something that fit and wouldn’t be too obscure that would connect to the end of Basic Training.
“Learn To Fly” by Foo Fighters:
Trying to include some music taste for Lauren now in contrast to James, the music that she would be into would be more contemporary so I decided to go for a popular contemporary band and this was what I found that best fit the scene itself. I don’t know too much about this band, from what I understand they connect to Nirvana which was previously featured in Class A, so the inclusion also felt like a nod to that.
“Highway Star” by Deep Purple:
Very early on this was selected to be in here as part of my choice to use “American songs” as much as possible, but this has deeper significance, as the band Deep Purple are actually English and this song was specifically written by them to try and pretend to be American and have an “American Sound” which was very popular at the time. It seemed fitting given what the plot of the film is. This kickass Rock song about driving as fast as possible would fit anywhere in the various different car chases used but seemed most appropriate here.
“Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd:
Whenever this song is featured people always seem to focus on the solo, which is of course understandable because it is the particularly stand out moment not just of this song but probably of the whole discography of the band, however I felt like seeing as this solo was used to great effect in Kingsman I wouldn’t simply imitate that (even though this film would technically take place before that and I have thought about the concept of it being used as fast paced music for fighting previous to that film) I decided to let Kingsman have their distinctive moment, which remains one of my favourite moments of modern cinema, and instead use the slower introduction part, which could be used for the journey to the prison itself, playing more on the lyrics about wanting to be free and contrasting that with James and Dave being sent into prison.
“Basket Case” by Green Day:
Wanting to use American music as much as possible, especially for the character introduction of Curtis, and a great opportunity to try and get more Punk Rock into the soundtrack, although this is technically “Nu Punk” or something I think, it’s not like The Clash which is what I consider to be actual Punk Rock, although the distinction is fairly meaningless and elitist, I decided to use this song for Curtis’ character introduction. Initially this was going to be “American Idiot” during early planning however that song didn’t yet exist at the time when this film would have been made so I had to select an earlier song and actually I think that “Basket Case” fits Curtis better anyway, so another happy accident.
“I Want To Break Free” by Queen:
You can’t have James listening to just any old rubbish so he goes out of his way to try and find some decent music while inside prison, and this was an obvious choice even if the song itself isn’t written about literally trying to break out of a prison the connection seems like something that all ages of audience could notice and enjoy, it’s important to me that not every song is some lofty, intellectual, obscure connection in order to maintain some of the light hearted fun, which is the point of having the music there in the first place. It should add something to the scene, comedy or action or whatever it might be, and hopefully all these songs add something to the scene.
“Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley:
Truly a classic of the Rock and Roll genre, you couldn’t do a list of American Rock songs and not include something by ‘The King’ so I chose to use his famous “Jailhouse Rock” to connect to the newly introduced prison riot scene, ‘Rock’ throughout the series is something of a metaphor (or perhaps that isn’t the right word, harbinger? Innuendo?) for ‘fight’ and this is made abundantly clear here. I quite liked the juxtaposition of the bouncy upbeat 50s song with the graphic violence of the fight scene and hopefully my little inclusion of a new plot element was a fitting accompaniment to this piece of American Rock legend.
“Jailbreak” by Thin Lizzy:
Used as the second jailbreak song, this time specifically as they are breaking out, an upbeat song with distinctive opening, and catchy chorus, the song that I think best fits my homage to the film Vanishing Point and the closest that the CHERUB series would get to a chase movie feel. A bit on the nose but very fun and so it had to be included.
“Hotel California” by Eagles:
When you are making a list of Classic American Rock songs and setting the film’s ending in California then you really have to use “Hotel California” so I couldn’t resist. Not just because it is a classic though, the song has been said to have probably a hundred different meanings by the band and that there is no one true correct way of interpreting it, even though they always wrote songs critical of the Music industry this was written to be generally more critical of the American Dream as a whole, some may see the Hotel California, with all it’s strange goings on, as a reference to “The Overlook Hotel” which would be a connection with “The Shining” another film reference for this screenplay and a connection to Stephen King who wrote “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” which has many different references, not just that this is about escaping prison but the use of Tim Robbins as Scott and that Jackson is reading Stephen King’s “Different Seasons” in which the short story originally appeared. However ‘the Hotel’ in California could also be the Ranch itself where they stay being literally a dangerous place where it initially seems welcoming but the intention is that James and Lauren “can never leave” as the song suggests.
“Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)” by The Hollies:
Despite what people might think this is far from a simple nod to Jane herself, the song being used as a character introduction has some other layers in there, Jane actually being British by birth originally fits with The Hollies being a British band, they wrote the song to try to achieve an American sound, pretending to be American if you will, and of course the song itself being told from the perspective of an FBI agent working undercover meant it fit so well that it had to be used here. Furthermore it foreshadows James falling for Jane’s superficial charm, just as the character in the song, falls for the ‘Long Cool Woman’ which adds another layer to it I think.
“Enter Sandman” by Metallica:
This Classic Heavy Metal song is used for the pounding forwards momentum that is building suspense under the scene and the dark foreboding feel it can generate, this song was written to be something of a ‘dark lullaby’ hence the inclusion of the “hush little baby” line, which uses a children’s lullaby and in this song was originally intended to reference children dying, which is foreshadowing of Jane’s plan, the shots used in the film further contain references to the music video of this song.
“Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses:
Probably the best Rock song to use as a fight scene song, specifically the solo being one of the best guitar solos of all time, this American Classic had to be used somewhere and where better than the fight scene right at the climax of this film? The band will no doubt make more appearances throughout the remaining films.
“Morning Has Broken” by Cat Stevens:
If the use of “Enter Sandman” by Metallica is the dark lullaby then this is the opposite, the song is based on a children’s hymn and was written by a children’s author with the specific aim to make something that children would be able to use with simple structure, it was adapted by Cat Stevens into the song used here, to literally reference the dawning of a new day but also them having got through the danger and made it out the other side to safety. Rick Wakeman actually wrote and played the famous piano introduction for the song and wasn’t credited or paid for it during the original release and so I suppose we can also consider this an introduction of Rick Wakeman into the series as I’m sure he will be popping up in later films.
“Get This Party Started” by P!nk:
Just needed something contemporary and pop based and upbeat to use as a canteen song, there isn’t really anything intended to be much deeper here, this is just background filler music for the canteen and people are talking over much of it anyway. Potentially there could be some meaning there but I’m not aware of it if there is, the kids are partying, maybe that’s enough once in a while.
“Turn It On Again” by Genesis:
For the final song of this film I wanted it to be something British and a powerful optimistic Rock song, so now seemed like the perfect time to use this, of course meta-textually it references it being the end of the film and urging people to ‘turn it on again’ perhaps? But generally I just really liked this song personally, wanted to include it at some point and this is where I thought made the most sense to.
