2023.06.06 06:03 FainterXo Member Feedback Wanted! Sellers, Ads, Promotions - What do you want in a Rep Community?
What's up everyone! The mod team continues to be amazed at the incredible community we are building here. Our goal is to be the best rep sneaker forum on Reddit and provide our members with the best information, links to deals and opportunities for winning free kicks.
Here are some incredible stats about our community
- We hit 100k members on 12/23/23 and in 6 months we've grown by another 41k users. That's an average of 250 new users every day!
- Over the last 30 days we tracked over 5.9 million page views
- Over the last 30 days there were over 2,800 new posts
- Over the last 30 days there were almost 27,000 post comments
- In the past 90 days the Mod team has coordinated 16 giveaways exclusive to our community and given away over 100 pairs of shoes to our members.
We are growing bigger and better than ever and the mod team recognizes some changes happening and wants the sub members feedback on shaping our future.
Promotion, seller ads, and user ads masquerading as QCs/Finds
Promotion and Seller Ads When the mod team works with sellers, we do our best to bring forward quality sellers who we know will give our members the best products at the best prices. Often times the trade off for sellers doing giveaways is their ability to post in our subreddit.
Examples
Some sellers post better content than others. Some sellers are more proficient with Reddit and post more frequently than others. The mod team tries to stress with any seller posting that we want
QUALITY content. New shoes being produced, Batch comparisons, retail comparisons, stock lists, factory information, etc. Sometimes the line gets fuzzy on what we should remove and what we should leave.
One option could be to create a post flair that is dedicated to seller "ads" that would separate out posts from using the guide or finds flairs.
Sellers who have not offered any benefit to the subreddit but are posting ads Often times we see these sellers either trying to disguise their post by labeling it as being a QC from an agent when it is clearly not, or they don't know any better and just post an ad. 99% of these get removed shortly after they are posted. The mod team does research on each one of these to see if they are valid, reputable sellers. In most cases they are spam stores with links to bad quality products, fake listings and other red flags. In some cases the sellers look promising and we reach out to find out more and possibly collaborate and let the community be the judge.
Examples
The mod team would like feedback on these posts. We feel that the current process for these is OK, although it's extremely manual. shout out to
u/alwayslikethis08 for helping flag these posts
Users who collaborate with sellers and post for them Scrolling through the sub to an untrained eye it's sometimes difficult to notice what could be a collaboration ad for a seller vs. an actual new find. In other cases it's blatantly obvious that a user is posting as part of a promotional offer from a seller. Commonly it's "take this free pair and post for me". I (personally) will never admonish anyone for getting a free pair here and there. Free is the ultimate form of budget! (kidding...kind of :D ). But we know that sometimes this can be off putting and potentially mislead others. I will not post any examples in this section but we would like feedback on how the sub would like us to adapt to this change.
Our goal will always be to provide the members of this subreddit with the best possible content and deals on kicks. We hope that with
some seller participation that healthy competition will drive prices down and quality/customer service up. In the end, the cream always rises to the top. Good sellers often don't need the promotion as their name is talked about enough from members. For new sellers looking to establish though it can be a good way to give people more options. What we do not want is the subreddit to become overrun and oversaturated with poor quality ad posts from sellers with no vested interest in the success of the community other than profiting off our members.
What can and can't we do?
Reddit moderation is pretty basic at it's core. Here are some things we can and can't do right now
Can
- Add new user or post flair types that would clearly distinguish these types of posts
- Add logic to our automoderator that when a seller with the Weidian Seller flair posts, a stickied comment is added that clearly indicates that a post originated from a Weidian seller
- Require or Ban certain words, phrases or other items that would make it more or less difficult for sellers to post
- Increase or decrease spam and safety filters (not currently being evaluated)
- Post spam filter is set to moderate where users with negative karma or young accounts are supposed to be held for review prior to being visible but the spam filter is not great
- Comment filters are set to their lowest limit without being off
- Add increased information in our subreddit Wiki, Header or sidebar that may highlight great sellers and caution against targeted ads
- adapt to changes and listen to our members
Can't
- Force sellers to comply or prevent them from making new accounts and posting regardless
- stop anyone from working with sellers on their own personal endeavors
- staff a full time mod who catches every thing as it happens. We have a great team of moderators who all do a great job, but this is still a hobby and we do our best. Some things will always slip through
- do nothing and not serve our members
We would love to hear feedback! Your feedback will be reviewed and put into an action plan that we present back to the sub and then implemented.

2023.06.06 05:15 ZartudatuGaming Older Samsung TV - Trying to figure out Overscan - Options in Service Menu?
I'm using a new (old) TV for my retro gaming (PS1 / Atari / GameCube / Wii) and I'm having a problem with overscan and lack of options to correct it.
I am waiting on my RetroThink but I have done a few tests with Composite, S-Video, HDMI, HDMI via VGA, and Component.
The TV I'm concerned about is my 23" Samsung LNR237WX/XAA:
https://www.samsung.com/ca/support/model/LNR237WX/XAA/ Manual:

https://i.imgur.com/8jvk1ly.png?width=100% The text on the Samsung has the 'All rights reserved' cut half way on the bottom. On the Toshiba it is non-existent.
My Samsung has 480p, 480i, 720p support. I also can set 4:3, Wide, Panorama, and Zoom, but Zoom doesn't really work for this as the image needs to be in 4:3.
Then I tried my Atari Flashback and did some tests:
https://i.imgur.com/XBLQf9R.png?width=100% Same kind of issues here. I did a quick test by using HDMI to VGA and it did show more of the picture than just using HDMI. The Samsung doesn't have Dot per Dot mode or 1:1 I don't think.
I tested my Wii with component and no real difference:
https://i.imgur.com/AcbyR14.png?width=100% I heard you can access the Service Menu and possibly make adjustments but I'm not experienced enough with these to even know what to look for, and I'm not sure where to get a service manual online. These are the options though:
https://i.imgur.com/MFwnfDU.png?width=100% I'm hoping I can do something to adjust this. I'm not sure how the RetroThink will handle it since going with HDMI as per my Atari test had some of the picture outside of the visible area. I was only able to get more by using an HDMI to VGA adapter. Worst case I can still do that can just output the audio from the adapter to the TV's Audio IN, or use external speakers.

I'm using a new (old) TV for my retro gaming (PS1 / Atari / GameCube / Wii) and I'm having a problem with overscan and lack of options to correct it. I first noticed the problem when loading up FF Origins on Playstation 1.

2023.06.06 04:44 DESTEK-VR Apple Vision Pro, it's blazing, powerful, amazing, and also incredibly expensive!
| WWDC 2023 is also referred to as the "XR Spring Festival" by the XR industry. For everyone interested in the AMR field, Vision Pro indeed brings significant impact. Apple Vision Starting with the hardware and interaction, Apple Vision Pro resembles a pair of ski goggles, but apart from that, they don't have much in common. Vision Pro features a front-facing 3D glass that can display the user's eyes, allowing for normal eye contact with people around them. Apple calls this feature EyeSight. One of the fundamental design principles of Vision Pro is to prevent users from being isolated from their surroundings. To illustrate the contrast, let's take the example of VR devices. Unless the external cameras are manually activated, users are typically isolated from the outside environment and people, and others cannot see the user's face and eyes, leading to significant communication barriers. However, with Vision Pro, even in VR immersion mode, once someone approaches, the device automatically displays the person's presence, and the user's eyes are also shown on the sides. When the user returns to immersion mode, the sides cover the eyes, indicating to others that the user cannot see them. On the inside, Vision Pro is equipped with Micro OLED dual-eye 8K (single-eye 4K) displays, as well as an M2 chip and a new R1 self-developed chip. It boasts the most detailed and best screens and the most powerful chip in head-worn devices to date. Apple has also designed a large area of heat dissipation holes at the bottom to ensure sustained performance. Currently, two core challenges in AR devices are optical display and computational performance, in simpler terms, the display quality and processing power. Improving performance requires addressing the "impossible triangle" of computation, battery life, and size. By transitioning from AR glasses to MR headsets, Apple has made some concessions in terms of size, including the choice of an external battery. Apple confirmed that Vision Pro adopts an external battery solution, which supplies power to the headset via a magnetic power cable. Even with the external battery solution, the officially claimed battery life is only two hours. In theory, users can extend the battery life indefinitely by replacing the external battery, but it requires separate purchases, and the price has not been disclosed. The external battery solution is not elegant, but it makes Vision Pro look very lightweight and thin. The official weight and front thickness have not been disclosed, but previous leaks have emphasized this point. Additionally, apart from the 8K screens and two high-performance chips that consume power, Vision Pro is equipped with 5 sensors and 12 cameras for eye tracking, environment capturing, and gesture tracking, all of which also consume power. This leads to the two core interaction methods of Vision Pro-gesture and voice. Apple claims that by relying on multiple cameras and sensors on the outside, various gestures can be accurately recognized, and the handle controller is abandoned. In addition, voice can also cover a series of operations such as text input and switching apps. To software and content In addition to showing off the Vision Pro device itself, Apple also announced at WWDC the Vision Pro operating system, visionOS, Apple's sixth operating system. Like iPadOS and watchOS, visionOS is also developed based on iOS. Benefiting from this, you can enjoy the huge application ecosystem of iOS. All compatible iOS/iPadOS applications can be used on visionOS in a windowed form. Unlike iPhone and iPad, where we use fingers for touch, Vision Pro mainly relies on eyes, hands and voice for interaction. For example, in Apple's demonstration, when the user is looking at a certain area, pinching the fingers is to select the content, flicking the finger upwards is to scroll the window to browse, and after staring at the input box, input can be made through voice typing. It is also worth mentioning that visionOS has also transformed FaceTime. Through an external 3D camera and deep learning technology, it can generate a 3D model that is close to a real person for the user, and apply it to the video call, while also reflecting the user's mood. Facial and hand movements. In the entertainment scene, the core is a larger screen. Users can pinch the corner of the window and pull it to expand the display range of the screen, and even fill the entire field of vision. However, for Apple, there is still a long way to go in terms of content. Except for conventional 2D, 3D movies and Apple Arcade games, it has not released any VR videos. The content cooperation with Disney's 100th anniversary will not be released until after the release. will really show up. But just like the success of the iPhone is the success of the AppStore, the success of Apple Vision Pro must be inseparable from the establishment and prosperity of the entire software ecosystem. Attracting developers to participate is the key, which is also the most fundamental purpose of Vision Pro's first appearance. In 2021, Facebook will change its name to Meta and focus on the metaverse. In its planning, XR equipment has become a bridge connecting the metaverse and the real world. Microsoft and Facebook are the current kings of AR and VR respectively. According to a research report released by TrendForce, AVR device shipments will be revised up to 14.19 million units in 2022, with an annual growth rate of 43.9%. The growth momentum comes from the increase in the epidemic Due to the demand for long-distance interaction and the price reduction strategy of Oculus Quest 2, the market share of Microsoft HoloLens 2 and Oculus Quest 2 ranks first in AR and VR respectively, and Oculus’ share in the VR market has been maintained at about 80% to 90%. A few days before Apple released the Vision Pro, Meta pre-released the Quest 3 headset, priced at $499. The technology industry is bound to usher in a huge wave again. Players including entertainment and game giants such as Disney, Chinese technology giants, unicorns, and entrepreneurs will compete to increase their stakes. The cost of the upstream supply chain of XR will also be further reduced. The content of XR The service ecosystem will truly prosper, and users will get better and cheaper products. submitted by DESTEK-VR to u/DESTEK-VR [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 04:43 PeensMagicalBeans Please Double Check if You, Your Parents, and Grandparents are signed up for Fair Pharmacare
My heart sank today at the pharmacy when I saw someone decline to pick up all of their prescriptions because they were out of this person's budget. For their privacy, I didn't approach them to tell them about
Fair Pharmacare, but I hope this information will spread. Even if you are 13 years old, ask your parents about this. If they aren't registered, I am sure that they will be grateful for you bringing it up. Please also bring your laptop to your grandparent's place and help them with this, along with any immigrant family you know.
Note: I don't work for the government. I can't guarantee everything I say is accurate, but I can confidently say for the most part it is.
What is Fair Pharmacare: Fair PharmaCare helps B.C. families/individuals pay for many prescription drugs, dispensing fees and some medical devices and supplies. The plan is based on income. The less you earn, the lower your deductible (you might not have one). Everyone should register even if they make $1M/year.
I have benefits through work/school so why do I need this?: Many benefit plans will deny coverage if you have not registered for Fair Pharmacare. Benefit plans do not want to pay for something when the government could be paying for it. They may cover something at lower costs, but when you get into $10,000+ drugs, they will likely be auditing to see if you are registered. Also, what if you lose your job? You may as well register.
If I am here on a work permit or student visa do I qualify?: Yes. You might not be able to register online. Call 604-683-7151. You will likely need to manually complete some forms.
I think that I am already registered. Where do I confirm?: You can confirm via this
link. A lot of people assume that because they have MSP, they are registered, but they are not. It is not automatic.
Where do I register?: Unless you are here on a work permit, student permit, or haven't filed your 2022 and 2021 taxes, you can register
here.
What information do I need to register?: Your MSP number and information from your CRA notice of assessment.
Why aren't all British Columbians automatically registered for Fair Pharmacare?: My educated guess based on consent and experience is that the Provincial government does not have automatic consent to access information about your income from the Federal government. You need to provide that consent.
Do I need to register every year?: No. The Provincial government will automatically access your information from the Feds and update your deductible amount. There are some situations that you will need to re-register, like moving out of Province and coming back, but I'm not getting into that today.
I lost my job. Can I have my Fair Pharmacare deductible adjusted?: Yes. If your income went down by more than 10% of your net income from two years ago, you can apply for an income review. Visit this
page for more information.
What if I can't afford my deductible and need my medication?: You can have your deductible spread out over the year so you are not paying it out all at once. There is some information
here, but contact Fair Pharmacare for more information.
What prescriptions are covered?: You can see what prescriptions are covered by searching the
BC Pharmacare Formulary. You can ask your doctor to prescribe something that is covered. Click on the hyperlinked DIN number for actual information. Some medications require special authority or are only covered under certain plans (eg.
Plan G for patients receiving psychiatric care - don't ask me about this because I know nothing).
Here is a general list of the supplies that Fair Pharmacare covers.
What is Special Authority?: Special Authority is full or partial coverage that requires a special circumstance. Your doctor needs to fill out a Special Authority Form to get coverage. For some drugs, all that is required is a diagnosis (eg.
a diagnosis of Acne for Retin-A) or it requires you having tried one of the drugs that are already covered and it didn't work for you (
eg. trying Dexadrine before getting Vyvanse covered for ADHD).
How long does it take Special Authority to be processed?: I
t can take up to business days for a Special Authority request to be processed. Some are done faster. You can login to
BC Health Gatweway and filter by Special Authority to see if it is approved. I think that you need to register for the BC Services Card App to login to the health gateway.
How many days can be dispensed at a time on Fair Pharmacare?: This varies and you should be very mindful of this. Always ask your pharmacist about this because I have been out of pocket $200 when I wanted 90 days for convenience but one prescription would only be covered for 30 days at a time.
My prescription is not covered through Fair Pharmacare. What can I do about this?: BC has a
drug review process%20or%20a%20non%2Dbenefit). Check to see if it has been approved by Health Canada and reviewed by
CADTH. Take a look at what their reports said about the drug. If your drug was recommended for approval but BC still does not cover it, [e-mail the Ministry of Health](mailto:
[email protected]). Maybe even the Minister of Health and your local MLA. Some years ago, I noticed that BC covered a drug for people under the age of 18, but no longer for those 18+. I e-mailed the government pointing out the reports, stating that it didn't make sense because the condition doesn't magically go away when the person turns 18, and guess what - they changed the policy a couple of months later.
The BC Government does regularly solicit feedback on drug coverage. I get an e-mail periodically with a list of medications that they will be soliciting feedback for, but I can't even remember how or where I signed up for it. You can
subscribe for updates to this public page which I imagine does the same thing as the e-mail I receive does.
What else can I do to make a difference?: I am not sure which is the correct body (BC Pharmacy Association, BC College of Pharmacists, BC Government), but personally I would like a campaign that has a sticker, cards, or something at every pharmacy in BC that shares information about Fair Pharmacare. If someone is being rung up and Pharmacare isn't listed on their receipt, the cashier is required to tell them about it. Perhaps government employees or Pharmacists can comment and let us know which body would be in charge of making this happen.
Hopefully this information helps. We are very lucky in BC that we have this program that applies to all British Columbians instead of just seniors and children. This can save you a huge amount of money. I often hear people complaining about the cost of Vyvanse and they have no clue that they can get it covered through Fair Pharmacare's Special Authority program. I hope this helps you or someone that you know. If you really want to give back to your community, stop making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and handing them out at Main/Hastings. Consider visiting a senior or hosting something in your condo's amenity room that walks people through the registration process. This will make a difference in a meaningful way. submitted by

2023.06.06 01:51 JeliPuff The Puzzling Disappearance of Karen Louise Wilson
This case has already been covered, but I felt the write-up was a bit bareboned and could’ve gone further in depth. That write-up was around 500 words, my one has over 1800 words. I have linked their original reddit post, and I recommend you check it out, as they covered this case first.
https://www.reddit.com/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/dipz9h/karen_louise_wilson_missing_from_albany_ny_since/ Karen Louise Wilson was born on February 10th, 1963, to Taylor and Jennie Wilson. She was a popular student in high school and a cheer leader. She was then a full-time senior political science major at the State University of New York and an unpaid, full-time intern for state Assemblyman Samuel Coleman. She aspired to have a career in the foreign service.
On Wednesday the 27th of March 1985, the 22 year old vanished without a trace.
THE TIMELINE: On the 27th, Karen went to the Colonie Center and bought a red t-shirt and a blue t-shirt to take with her on an upcoming spring break trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She may have also gotten a tan at the Tanning Hut; she had booked an appointment that day but no one at the tanning salon could remember seeing her.
She was last seen in the 1600 block of Central Avenue in Colonie, New York at approximately 7:20 pm. She also called her roommate around this time, and said she was on her way home for dinner.
It was initially believed that Karen got on a bus near the Butcher Block restaurant on Central Avenue and took it to Fuller Avenue, but it was later determined that she couldn’t have gotten on the bus and probably walked instead. 3 credible witnesses would later tell authorities that they had seen her on Fuller Avenue shortly afterwards.
THE LAST 3 SIGHTINGS: SIGHTING 1: The first witness told authorities that she saw Karen traveling southbound on Fuller Rd after she turned from Central Ave at 8:15pm.
She stated that as she approached a gas station on her left (believed to be the
Workingman’s Friend Gas Station), she passed a very slow-moving vehicle, also traveling southbound. She could not recall any specifics of the vehicle's description, except that the driver was a white male in his forties with an intent look on his face. The male had a beard, brown hair with a reddish tint, and a long nose and face.
The witness then saw a female believed to be Karen, walking near a guide rail along the west side of Fuller Road near Sysco Food. By the time the witness reached Fuller Rd at Railroad Ave, she had already driven past the female.
SIGHTING 2: The second witness saw someone they believed to be Karen on the west side of Fuller Road. This was between 8:10pm - 8:15pm.
She stated that the female was walking south of the entrance of Six Mile Waterworks (also known as Rensselaer Lake) near the construction road leading west off Fuller Road. This area is located just north of the I-90 underpass. The female was walking on the grassy portion of the sidewalk, with her head down.
A smaller person of unknown sex was walking along the female’s right side "almost shoulder to shoulder" seemingly urging her up an embankment or incline into the Six Mile area. The smaller person was described as between 5'5 - 5'8 (165-172cm), and between 120-140lbs (54-64kg). When the female turned her head to the left, the witness thought she appeared nervous.
The witness also described a white male following 50 to 100 feet behind the two subjects. He was walking at a steady pace, not seeming to be gaining on the two. He was described as about 5'11 (180cm) with a slim build, in his early 20's, wearing dark pants and a waist length jacket which may have been beige. He had light colored hair (gold to red), and a beard or some other type of facial hair. The couple then returned to the sidewalk and began walking in a normal manner southbound on Fuller Road.
After the witness stopped at the red light at the I-90 ramp, and then continued southbound, she saw the couple past the dirt construction road on the right, just out from the I90 underpass.
She also stated that she saw a stopped or disabled small unoccupied black vehicle at Fuller Rd at Washington Ave Ext. The vehicle had a New York plate bearing partial plate 239 with unknown letters. The car was sedan style and believed to be about five years old. The driver's window was down about 6" and the passenger window was down about 2". She thought this was odd because it looked like it was about to rain. Also noted on the driver's side window was a hole about ¼" in diameter with cracks radiating from it. She thought that it looked like a bullet hole.
SIGHTING 3: The last sighting of Karen was by a third witness at approximately 8:20pm as he left work at the SUNY Albany Campus, and was waiting at the traffic light on Washington Ave and Fuller Rd.
He was waiting for traffic to clear so that he could turn right, proceed north on Fuller Rd and access the I-90 entrance ramp across from the Six Mile entrance. The female was reportedly seen standing on the northwest corner of Fuller Road for about 10 seconds while the witness was waiting for the traffic to clear. He believed that the female appeared to be waiting for the traffic light to change.
When he made the right turn onto Fuller Rd, the witness saw a male crossing Fuller Rd from the west side to the east side, just south of the I-90 underpass. He took a few steps up the driveway where the construction trailers were on the east side of Fuller but seemed to change his mind. He then walked south on the east side of Fuller Rd. The male subject did not appear to be looking towards Karen.
He was described as a white male with "sandy or light brown, messy or curly" hair, with a couple of days growth of facial hair. He was of average height, about 18 - 25 years old, and was wearing a jean (denim?) or aviator type jacket, jeans, a flannel shirt, and high tan construction boots.
As the witness turned right onto the I-90 ramp, he saw a lime green Volkswagen Rabbit (estimated to be a 1981 or 1982) parked along the road. There was no one around the vehicle. This appears to have been the last sighting of her, and she hasn’t been heard from since.
Due to these witness accounts, authorities believe Karen likely walked south on Fuller Avenue towards State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany. They concluded she was likely abducted somewhere near Six-mile Waterworks, the entrance ramp to Interstate 90 westbound and the Northway. The night was not well lit, and the road was not heavily traveled, making it possible for someone to pull her into a vehicle within a matter of seconds without leaving witnesses.
DESCRIPTIONS & BELONGINGS: Karen was a Caucasian female listed at 5’3 (160cm) and 114lbs (51kg) with brown hair and brown eyes.
Investigators were unable to locate the personal belongings she had with her when she disappeared. These included: A gray cloth notebook, a blue nylon wallet with a Velcro closure, a green and white plastic bag from Ups N Down, and possibly a blue knapsack containing a yellow dress.
She was wearing a Cream-colored raincoat, a light blue short-sleeve pullover, faded blue Levi jeans and white sneakers. She also had a 14k gold ring, size 5 ½, with a turquoise zircon in raised setting along with 1/5 carat diamond on each side, a Seiko watch with a black face and gold numerals and white plastic earrings. The ring was approximately 40-50 years old.
Her dental records are available.
SUSPECTS: 1. A strange man was seen in the area around the time Karen vanished. He has never been identified and authorities have sought him for questioning, at least as a witness or possibly even a suspect.
2. Authorities announced that another suspect in the case was killed in an accidental house fire in 2013. He was never able to be conclusively linked to the case, and it’s thought he couldn’t be the perpetrator as he had reported to work at 4:00am, just a few hours after Karen vanished.
(On a personal note, this conclusion makes little sense to me. Karen’s last confirmed sighting was at around 7:20 pm, leaving nearly 9 hours in between her last known sighting and the time he clocked in to work. The last witness reported seeing her at 8:20pm which still leaves slightly under 8 hours.) 3. Authorities investigated the possibility that convicted murderer and suspected child-serial killer Lewis Lent Jr may have been involved in Karen's disappearance, but determined it was unlikely since Lent's previous victims were all children. He has not been ruled out.
THEORIES: 1. Police did investigate the possibility that Karen traveled to Florida after her disappearance as she had planned but found no evidence that she had ever left New York.
2. Her case has possible links to Suzanne Lyall’s abduction. Both were young, dark haired SUNY students abducted in the same manner. Authorities have investigated a possible link between the two. Both cases are unsolved.
The general consensus is that Karen was abducted and murdered.
PERSONAL THEORIES: 1. Due to Unresolved Mysteries not letting me add photos to this write-up I am unable to provide a sketch of the strange man seen in the area at the time. However, he has an uncanny resemblance to convicted serial killer John Bittrolff. It might be possible he is linked to the case, but this is simply an observation.
2. 2 young women were found murdered and floating in the river close to where Karen disappeared at the same time she vanished. It might be possible that the cases were linked.
CONCLUSION: During the first year after her disappearance, Karen's family, who now live out-of-state, mailed thousands of letters pleading for information and advertising their $10,000 reward for new details about her disappearance. They have now given up hope of their daughter coming back alive, and simply want to find her body, so they can give her a proper burial and finally know what happened to their daughter.
I don’t have much hope of a conclusion for this case any time soon. It seems clear she was abducted and murdered, and without a body there is no evidence that could lead to anything. Unless her body is found, or someone comes forward, I see this case being unsolved for years to come.
Karen Louise Wilson has been missing for 38 years. If she is still alive, she would be 60 years old.
If you have any information about Karen's disappearance, please contact New York State Police at 518-783-3212.

2023.06.06 01:17 jkool702 Could use some help/guidance for setting up a soda dispenser I found at a yard sale for home use
So, last weekend I came across a commercial restaurant-grade soda dispenser machine at a yard sale that, despite being
way more than we needed, was such an unbelievably good deal ($150 for everything) that I'd have been a fool to pass it up.
here is an Imgur album with pics of the hardware. As best as I can tell, we have:
- an 8-valve SV-175i soda dispenser (SKU 2705555)
- a McCann 7H carbonator deck pump
- (10x) BIB pumps + 2 pressure controllers on a rack for the syrup "bags in a box"
- a 20 lb CO2 tank
- Various cut off tubes + tubing connectors
Supposedly everything works and has only been used for ~1 month to provide drinks for the people setting up a restaurant (I didnt get the whole story, but it sounded like the lady I purchased this from and her husband were in the process of opening a restaurant when her husband was killed in a car accident and now she just wanted it gone).
Ive been able to find a few manuals (e.g.,
this and
this) for various revisions of the machine (though none that specifically list SKU 2705555), as well as
this technician's guide, though Im not looking forward to having to sift through 250+ pages of manuals to figure out how to put this thing together. So, If anyone who knows how can give a general overview or point me towards a good concise guide that would be awesome.
A few initial questions from what Ive seen browsing through these manuals:
- I was told that the only things missing were a) an (optional) ice maker and b) the syrup - does this seem to be correct?
- The diagrams in the manual showing how to connect things indicate some sort of secondary carbonator tank...I have the carbonator deck pump, but not a 2nd take (unless it is integrated into this pump)...Do I need one or will the deck pump I have do the carbonating all on its own?
- In the manuals Ive seen the "i" (in SV-175i) indicated as meaning "internal carbonator" as well as "inteli-carb". Internal carbonator I get, but could someone explain intelli-carb?
- Will this cool the soda it dispenses? Or would I need to rig up something like a small water tank in a mini-fridge that feeds it?
- I know it doesnt make ice, but if I dump ice in will it keep it cold for sustained periods of time?
Thanks in advance!

[Moved to 8. Additional Preparation Resources]
3.4 Effective note-making techniques - Keep it concise: Focus on capturing the key points and essential information. Avoid lengthy sentences and unnecessary details. Use bullet points, headings, and subheadings to structure your notes and make them easy to scan and review.
- Use abbreviations and symbols: Develop a set of abbreviations and symbols to represent commonly used words or phrases. This saves time and space while taking notes. For example, use arrows (→) for "leads to," abbreviations like "govt" for government, or "&" for "and."
- Highlight and underline: Use highlighters or underline important keywords, phrases, or facts to draw attention to critical information. This makes it easier to quickly review and revise key points.
- Draw diagrams and flowcharts: Visual representations like diagrams, flowcharts, or mind maps can help in understanding and retaining complex concepts. Use arrows, boxes, and connectors to illustrate relationships between different ideas or components.
- Use colors and different fonts: Incorporate colors or different fonts to visually differentiate between headings, subheadings, and content. This makes your notes more visually appealing and aids in organization and quick reference.
- Summarize and rephrase: Instead of copying content verbatim, try to summarize and rephrase information in your own words. This process enhances understanding and retention. Focus on capturing the essence of the content rather than every single detail.
- Include examples and case studies: Supplement your notes with relevant examples, case studies, and illustrations. This helps in better comprehension and application of concepts during revision and while answering exam questions.
- Create separate sections for different subjects/topics: Maintain separate notebooks or sections for each subject or topic. This helps in keeping your notes organized and easily accessible. It also allows you to review specific subjects independently.
- Use headings and subheadings: Use clear headings and subheadings to categorize and structure your notes. This makes it easier to locate specific information and navigate through your notes during revision.
- Regularly review and revise your notes: Set aside regular time for revisiting and updating your notes. Reviewing your notes frequently ensures that the information stays fresh in your memory and helps you identify areas that need further clarification or revision.
Remember, note-making is a personal process, and you should develop a system that works best for you. Experiment with different techniques (Cornell, Outlining, Mapping, Charting, Sentence), formats, and organization methods to find what suits your learning style and aids your comprehension and revision process.
4. Preliminary Exam
The Preliminary exam is the first stage of the selection process. It consists of two papers: General Studies Paper-I (GS Paper-I) and General Studies Paper-II (CSAT Paper-II). Here is an overview of the Prelims exam:
1. General Studies Paper-I (GS Paper-I): Duration: 2 hours

Environment and Ecology: Environmental Ecology, environmental Legislation, Biodiversity, Climate Change, and Conservation. g. Current Affairs: National and International Events, Government Schemes, Sports, Policies, etc.
Not including key important topics as that will put a bias on your initial preparation. 2. General Studies Paper-II (CSAT Paper-II): Duration: 2 hours
Total marks: 200 marks
Number of questions: 80 questions
1/3rd Negative Marking
Nature of questions: Multiple-choice questions (MCQs)
Syllabus: The CSAT Paper-II focuses on testing the aptitude and analytical abilities of the candidates, including areas such as comprehension, logical reasoning, analytical ability, decision-making, problem-solving, and general mental ability.
It's important to note that the marks obtained in the Prelims exam are considered for qualifying purposes only. The score of the Prelims is not added to the final merit list. The objective of the Prelims is to shortlist candidates for the Main examination based on a predetermined cutoff.
How to prepare - Familiarize yourself with the exam pattern and syllabus of both GS Paper-I and Paper-II. Understand the weightage of each topic and the type of questions asked in the exam.
- Go through PYQs to understand the trends, the difficulty level, and the areas that are frequently asked. This will give you insights into the exam pattern and help you identify important topics.
- Develop a study plan that covers the entire syllabus, allocating sufficient time to each subject and topic. Make a timetable and stick to it, ensuring regular and consistent study hours.
- Choose reliable and comprehensive study materials for each subject. Refer to textbooks, NCERT books, and other recommended resources.
Importance of PYQs and Mock Tests (PYQs >> Mocks)
Solving mock tests and previous years' question papers allows you to evaluate your exam readiness. Mock tests and PYQs provide valuable insights into the exam pattern, structure, and types of questions asked in the UPSC CSE Prelims.
Mock tests help you assess your knowledge and skills. By analyzing your performance, you can identify your strengths and weaknesses in different subjects and topics. This helps you focus your preparation on areas that need improvement, optimizing your study plan.
By solving these papers, you become familiar with the format of the exam and gain confidence in tackling different question styles. It also helps in time management. It won't be an exaggeration if we say that PYQs can help you clear prelims with ease.
5. Main Examination
The Main examination consists of a written exam comprising nine papers, out of which two are qualifying in nature, and the remaining seven are considered for the ranking. Here is the structure and syllabus of the Main exam:
- Paper-A: One of the Indian languages (qualifying in nature) This paper tests your proficiency in one of the scheduled languages mentioned in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. You need to choose one language from the given list.
- Paper-B: English (qualifying in nature) This paper tests your understanding of English language and comprehension skills.
- Essay (Paper-I): You are required to write two essays, each consisting of 1,000-1,200 words. The topics are given from a wide range of subjects and require analytical and critical thinking.
- General Studies I (Paper-II): Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society.
- General Studies II (Paper-III): Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations.
- General Studies III (Paper-IV): Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management.
- General Studies IV (Paper-V): Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.
- Optional Subject - Paper I (Paper-VI): You have to choose one optional subject from the list provided by UPSC. Each subject has two papers (Paper I and Paper II).
- Optional Subject - Paper II (Paper-VII): The second paper of the chosen optional subject.
In order to adequately prepare for your studies, it is crucial to refer to the specific wording and content outlined in the syllabus. Let's take an example from the UPSC GS-1 syllabus, which includes the topic "Effects of globalization on Indian society." This particular aspect of the syllabus encompasses various dimensions such as the impact of globalization on women, children, older individuals, culture, and crime in India. Therefore, it is essential to thoroughly prepare for this section by exploring all possible dimensions mentioned. To ensure you cover the required topics, it is advisable to keep a copy of the syllabus for reference.
Ethics broadly comprise two parts. Section A ( Theory) and Section B ( Case studies)
Section A of the General Studies IV (Paper-V) in the UPSC Main examination focuses on theoretical aspects related to fundamental values and concepts. It explores the meaning of various words such as integrity, ethics, morality, beliefs, and value systems.
An important subsection within Section A is "foundational values for civil services." This part delves into the core values expected from civil servants, including integrity, impartiality, neutrality, objectivity, dedication to public service, empathy, tolerance, and compassion towards marginalized sections of society.
This section holds immense significance in the syllabus, not only for Section A and case studies but also for your future career as a civil servant. It is crucial to prepare this portion thoroughly as it forms the basis of your ethical conduct and professional responsibilities once you are selected for civil services.

- Preparation: To prepare for the interview, stay updated with current affairs and recent developments. Review your DAF (Detailed Application Form) thoroughly, as the panel may ask questions based on the information provided. Practice mock interviews and seek feedback from mentors or seniors.
- Body Language and Communication: Pay attention to your body language, maintain eye contact, sit upright, and speak clearly and confidently. Use appropriate language and be respectful to the panel members.
- Honesty and Integrity: Be truthful in your responses. If you are unsure about an answer, it is better to admit it rather than provide incorrect information. The panel values honesty and integrity.
- Positive Attitude: Maintain a positive and optimistic attitude throughout the interview. Do not get flustered by challenging questions or interruptions. Stay composed and present your thoughts logically.
- Post-Interview Analysis: After the interview, reflect on your performance. Identify areas where you can improve and learn from the experience. Stay positive and prepare for the next steps in the selection process.
Remember, the interview is an opportunity to showcase your personality, confidence, and suitability for civil services. Be well-prepared, stay calm, and present your best self during the interview.
More on DAF Do not include unnecessary hobbies without realizing the consequences. As a result, You have to spend a lot of time preparing answers for irrelevant information, which could have potentially put you in trouble during the interview.
It is crucial to consult a senior or someone experienced before filling your DAF. More often than not, a significant portion of your interview is based on the information provided in the DAF. You will be asked numerous questions on specific aspects of your DAF that the panel found interesting.
Being honest is essential, but it is equally important to be smart. Include only those details that can be easily prepared from an interview point of view. Focus on adding things you are confident about and have thoroughly prepared. Not being able to answer something from your DAF can create a wrong impression.
If possible, consider filling out a rough DAF at the beginning of your UPSC preparation and then develop your hobbies and personality accordingly throughout the course of your preparation.
Even if something goes wrong during the interview, it is crucial to stay calm. Remember that everyone makes mistakes. Gather yourself, remain confident, and maintain a polite demeanor.

2023.06.05 19:18 daughterskin Persona 5 Royal (2019): You and he were... buddies, weren't you?
"Ooh, we can do this!" Persona 5 Royal is a remaster of a sequel of a spinoff of a spinoff of a game I'll never play based on a book I'll never read. Wisely, like a lot of long-running IPs, you don't need to know anything about the surrounding meta-series to jump in. Persona 5 is an eighty-hour long visual novel that is on occasion interrupted by a dungeon-crawling JRPG. It's not an even split. I'd say a good three-quarters of the game is just choosing dialogue options and watching cutscenes. One bullshit chapter aside, it's a pretty straightforward experience provided you keep up to date with your social obligations.
Persona 5 has you play a young student falsely accused of assault. Now on probation, you're sent packing to Tokyo where you begin a new year of school under a heavy cloud of suspicion. Your world is especially bleak when you learn that your classmates live under the thumb of a predatory gym-teacher. That is until you discover the Metaverse. This is a concept of a virtual world that has existed in public discourse long before a sweaty robot in real-life tried trademarking the term. In Persona 5's case, the metaverse is a realm borne from the subconscious thoughts and desires of the masses. The first chapter has our hero, codenamed Joker, travel to the verse and infiltrate the mental palace of the gym teacher. By stealing the treasure therein, he makes the teacher in the real world feel the weight of his crimes, forcing him to confess. It's like
Inception with better audio-mixing. Or
Paprika if you're a contrarian nerd.
Joker starts a team called the Phantom Thieves, made up of a close band of friends and some girl called Haru, and they embark on a mission to steal the hearts of the otherwise untouchable corrupt figures in authority. Each chapter follows the same formula. You first get a long period of cutscenes and exposition to set up the next villain. Then you enter a sandbox where you have two to three weeks to steal the treasure from the villain of the week's palace. It's recommended to binge said palace in the minimum number of days possible, to free up your time building your social stats and bonds.
Now that I've laid out the structure of the game, I can put forth where it shines, where it falters, and where it stuffs itself like Mr. Creosote.
Content Breakdown - 9 Chapters
- 5 Social Stats
- 23 Confidants
- 33 Requests
The Perks of (not) being a Wallflower I detest a sloppy interface. I hate it when a Eurojank RPG ejaculates a message onscreen like "You received 15 Experience Points" in Calibri font.
Piranha Bytes, I'm looking at you. I believe there are two ways you can go about making an ideal interface. Either downplay it and make it largely invisible, like
Resident Evil ever since it got rebooted in RE7 or give the interface a character in itself that reflects that the nature of the game. What people remember about Persona 5 is the sheer style it injects into every menu and transition. There's an energy to every speech-bubble and button-prompt. The striking red colour-scheme and excited typography ooze charm without ever hampering the legibility. Your reward for leveling up isn't a minor stat increase, it's hearing the satisfying pop of a balloon in the result screen. I never thought firing a gun in turn-based combat could be satisfying. The one stylistic choice that wasn't necessary were the jagged black-borders seen during cinematics. It reminded me of
Dark Souls II where every time we introduced the boss, the cameraman got an erection.
*
I beat
Dragon Quest XI a while back. I thought it was solid at the time, being a HD revisit of the much loved VIII. But my opinion of it has since soured like pasteurized milk in a heatwave. For one the protagonist had an incredibly boring design and possessed no personality whatsoever. Scene after scene would thrust him to the spotlight, despite him having no voiced dialogue nor able to register a single facial expression. Persona 5's Joker meanwhile never took me out of the action because the camera never gets it in his face, and he can speak a few words in at key moments. It's no exaggeration to say that Joker's design is iconic and instantly recognizable. Meanwhile that loser uncle from
Watch Dogs laments that nobody cares about his ball-cap, which remain by the thousand gathering dust in a Canadian warehouse.
Dragon Quest XI also lost me due to its rather horrendous soundtrack. That game could take 90 hours to platinum when it had at most 90 minutes of music. If you ever stumbled upon a pleasing composition, that's because it was recycled from a previous game. The overworld theme of XI haunts my dreams with its cacophony of blarps heard in every corner of the world. I strongly believe that the composer, Koichi "No Dignity" Sugiyama, actually died years before his official passing. But his spirit was able to possess his corpse thanks to his reality-warping bigotry. By comparison Persona 5 has an actual soundtrack that easy on the ears. We've got Jazz, Pop, and a touch of Disco. The best track is "River in the Desert", a thumping vocal piece that hypes up the player's stature instead of the boss. I'm really not a music-listening-guy so I'll just hurry to the next point. It's easier to raze than to praise.
*
Persona 3 and 4 were made quick and cheap back in the day, with the most budget example of their production being the dungeons. Just floor after floor of randomly-generated rooms and corridors. Throw in some treasure chests and patrolling mobs of enemies and you're done. Persona 5 steps up by default simply by having level-design at all. Each palace you infiltrate is a hand-crafted zone with puzzles and set-pieces. To help sell the feeling of a heist, each palace is modeled after a locale like a bank, a castle, or a casino, but naturally governed by the ego of its ruler. It isn't mind-blowing for a game to have levels with setpieces and shortcuts, but it's such a strong move forward for the series that it can never go back to a bunch of flat and boring grids.
Persona 5 Royal still has a randomly-generated dungeon, but it's well handled here. When you steal the treasure from a palace, the place crumbles and can no longer be accessed. Mementos is the game's backup and mega-dungeon, being over seventy floors deep and unlocked piecemeal with the plot. Here you can quickly level up, earn cash and items, catch persona you missed and undertake side-quests. The quests are pretty much all the same, where you confront a mini-boss in an arena, but there aren't too many of them to outstay their welcome. Mementos has a rewarding collectible system whereby you can find stamps that can be used to augment the rate you gain experience, cash, and items. What's absolutely key about Mementos is that you have Ryuji's Insta-kill perk. This lets you immediately kill off low-level mobs without entering combat, but lets you keep all the spoils. This cuts down on hours of killing trash mobs. I honestly think this perk should have been available from the get-go.
*
Combat is quick and flashy, with the aim being to chain attacks together so that your enemies never get a word in. You hit foes in their elemental weakness or bring them to their knees with a status-effect, then cap them off with a flashy all-out attack. It's a testament to the game there is so much vitality in what is a purely turn-based affair with no quick-time events or timed button-mashing thrown in an attempt to perk things up. It's very much a winning formula that has been iterated and polished on for over a decade.
Guts and Friends are still on the Boat The irony of Persona 5 is that for a game all about balancing one's social-life with work and making friends, you will have to give up your own real social-life and friends if you want to beat the fucking thing. Against my better judgment I powered through the thing in two weeks and earned the rather easy platinum after eighty hours. There's a second set of achievements in-game that demand you accomplish all the tedious shit like beat every superboss and collect every item, but nobody has the time for that. Now, I can't think of what to add to Persona 5 as to improve the experience, but I sure as hell have a laundry list of scenes that should have gotten the Hemingway treatment.
*
The first three-quarters of the story is told through a framing-device where Joker is in custody after a heist gone wrong. You're thrust back to the present between each chapter where the interrogator introduces the next villain. However, every time you initiate a new friendship, the framing-device butts in for no real reason. What's that? You became pals with the kid who plays the light-gun game at the arcade? That must explain how adept you are at firearms! This happens at least twenty times. It's an entire layer of commentary that didn't need to exist.
*
In an eighty-hour game, I don't think it's necessary to flashback to a moment that happened ten seconds ago.
*
The climax of the base game is incredibly long. The palace has you take on five minibosses who drop the keys needed to reach the treasure. In a surprising twist, the last mini-boss has three phases. The palace ruler then fights you in a five-phase battle. Hope you don't die at any point, because checkpoints aren't a thing in this game. Completing this palace launches you into the endgame which takes place inside of a single day. First you must reach the bottom of Mementos, which I also hope you hadn't neglected to fully plumb by this point. Then you have to complete two dungeons back-to-back in addition to four mini-bosses before finally taking down the god of evil or whoever. What makes this section especially drag is that the plot threads the player might have cared about are wrapped up in the middle of this dungeon crawl. You are essentially fighting a new villain at this point only vaguely tied to the main conspiracy.
*
I loosely followed a guide for the first four months of the game, and I was able to max out all my social stats by the midpoint. Still, the game had to pause while rewarding me points in charm or intellect I had no use for.
*
Towards the end of the game, I noticed a ton of identical scenes that occur back-to-back. When the true villain rears his head, all your party-members lose hope and choose to mope around in a prison block. You have to manually talk to all six of them and snap them out of their stupor, while the soundtrack keeps cutting between the same two maudlin tracks like this is
Full House or something. This sequence is repeated again in the next chapter. For some reason it takes Joker an effing week just to hold a five-minute conversation with each of his friends. Then each of my friends unlocked their strongest persona, meaning the same scene again six times in a row. Just when the game threatened to end, there's a day where Joker is given a chocolate from all ten of the women he can befriend. The same scene, ten times, all in a row.
*
At the end of the first social link I completed there was a twist that put a neat bow on the friendship. I smiled at that. Then I completed another social link which delivered same twist, and another and another. My smile dropped. I feel the writers are running up against the structure of the game, with each social link having exactly ten levels to progress through. A game like
Ys VIII or Yakuza can be more flexible and less repetitive with how side-quests are laid out because it's not beholden to a calendar. Persona 5 exposes the limitation of its central conceit since it has to stretch or squeeze every sidequest into the same ten beats.
*
In an eighty-hour game, I don't think it's necessary to flashback to a moment that happened ten seconds ago.
XXI. The Worst I'm not sure if it's a Japanese thing or a Persona thing, but the relationship between Joker and his homeroom teacher gets
really awkward. The thing is you'll want to embark on this weird friendship as early as possible as she offers the most useful perks in the game.
*
Ryuji is your first companion, and he's likable from the get-go. He's a wrongly disgraced athlete who's not big on the books, but he possesses a firm sense of justice and is a faithful brother-in-arms from the minute you meet him. The worst scene of the game sees Ryuji put his friends' safety over his own wellbeing, proving him to be at heart a selfless and compassionate person. He then gets beaten up by the very people he saved, as a joke. Persona 5 is peppered with little "anime-isms" that would be inoffensive in a twenty minute cartoon, but are plain tasteless in a story-heavy epic that wants to be taken seriously.
The second worst scene of the game sees Ryuji get hit on by a camp gay duo. In a story with many healthy friendships between men, what wasn't needed was a pair of dated and unfunny stereotypes seemingly time-warped here from 2003. The Royal remaster tries to dress down their offensive nature, but it would have kinder to omit them entirely like
Yakuza 3 did with its crossdresser country-runner subplot.
*
Persona 5 has an excellent soundtrack, no argument here. But like the previous game it commits the sin of having one unchanging battle theme. There are technically two, one for when you ambush the enemy 95% of the time, the other for when the enemy ambushes you. In essence you're going to hear the first fifteen seconds of the same pop song ad nauseum across an eighty-hour game.
*
Persona 5 still has that old chestnut where you get a Game Over if Joker falls in combat, regardless of how healthy the rest of the party is. While there may have been an in-story justification for this rule back in Persona 3, or in the SMT games where your characters acts as a beast-tamer with no human allies, here it just feels like a tradition that has stuck around because nobody cared to take a second look at it. Like an employee who was technically fired ages ago, but who still shows up at the workplace and acts like nothing happened.
*
Personal preference, but I think the persona system itself could be streamlined. The act of recruiting of monsters in the Persona sub-series is downplayed because only Joker can change and customize his persona. There are hundreds of persona to fuse together, with dozens of possible traits and hundreds of possible skills to pass on, which feels like overkill for sake of customization. Persona started as a spinoff of a series that was hardcore turn-based combat and dungeon-crawling. But with the introduction of the social-sim element the needle shifted and dungeon-crawling is no longer the sole exhibit. I think that for all the polish and new toys Persona 5 brings, it wouldn't be a bad idea to cut down on the series baggage it inherits. It's also tedious on level-up having to discard old skills to make room for new ones.

The first antagonist is a predatory gym teacher called Kamoshida and he's an excellent villain for how real he is. He's not tied to the overarching conspiracy or some supernatural monster, he's simply a rotten man in authority not far removed from the countless rotten real-life men in authority who make the headlines every week. The first chapter builds and builds on Kamoshida's depravity, making your vendetta with him both personal and just. The mood lightens when Joker and his friends get a handle on how the metaverse, and there is a well-earned catharsis in bringing Kamoshia down from the inside.
The problem is that the rest of the villains after Kamoshida suck. All of them, except for the new guy introduced in the Royal remaster, are missing something. One villain decides to reform offscreen and promptly disappears. Another villain is shown to be nothing but a despicable businessman without a single redeeming trait. When he gets killed off by the conspiracy, it's played as a tragedy, but again the game has any tender moments to his name happen offscreen. The main villain, who drives the first eighty-percent of the plot, is a massive disappointment. You'll know who he is after the first chapter, though inevitably the Phantom Thieves are too thick to grasp that the random guy with voice-acting and his own character portrait will be important later. When the main villain formally takes the spotlight, he gives us the worst written exchange in the game, wherein he and his henchman talk about the evil plan they're undertaking, despite both characters knowing each other for years and having no reason to exposit shit now except for the benefit of an invisible audience. No matter how much they want us to hate this guy there is simply nothing to grasp on to. He's too thinly sketched to merit any animosity.
By comparison, the villain of
Yakuza 7 was a politician who was all but useless in a fight. Where Persona 5 pays lip service to rebellion, Yakuza 7 goes heavily political and is all the better for it. The villain there pulls an absolutely disgusting move right out of the nationalist playbook, yet taking him down is not a purely cathartic act. The final confrontation is a rollercoaster of emotion that drives the hero, the villain, and the audience to blubbering tears. For how long Persona 5 is, it fails to flesh out its antagonists to register them as in being any way interesting. It's also disappointing in the lack of any female villains.
The Royal remaster isn't so much of an expanded version of the game as it is a mulligan, a do-over. They must have realized that the villains after Kamoshida kind of blew, so they capped the game off with an extra chapter and a proper antagonist. You'll know who this guy is long before the other shoe drops, but he is a strong addition and offers an excellent performance by a now sadly departed voice-actor. The new chapter also pairs you up with an evil party member who is refreshing in how much of a hammy, abrasive jerk he is.
*
Now I must come to the elephant in the room, and I'm not talking about Ganesha. This is the absolute low-point of Persona 5, an opinion shared by pretty much everyone who has beaten the game.
The fifth chapter of Persona 5 is unequivocally garbage. We're introduced to Haru, the last member of the Phantom Thieves. She makes her formal appearance forty hours in and her social link is the final one to be unlocked. By the time I'd finally spoken to her I'd maxed out all my social stats, finished most of my bonds, and the Phantom Thieves had undergone many close adventures together, making it a tall order to care about some new girl so late in the day. Even the girl stapled on by the Royal remaster has more build-up than Haru.
Despite Haru having personal ties to the villain of the week, the plot decides that a talking cat should take the limelight instead. In the showdown between Haru and the villain, the talking cat gets the shining moment instead of Haru.
Why are we are focused on the fucking talking cat? There is an utterly stupid conflict with this talking cat that comes from nowhere, accomplishes nothing, and is promptly wrapped up having no effect on the greater narrative. There's also an attempt to frame what has been a black-and-white situation until now into a moral quandary, even though the thieves were perfectly justified in their actions which they did for selfless reasons. It's like Batman catching the Joker trying to make baby oil by crushing babies, and the Joker stops Batman in his tracks by asking what if Batman was the real guilty party here?
Sadly it isn't just the writers who are chugging stupid pills in this chapter. The game-design takes a deep dive into obnoxious waters. The palace has this nonsensical puzzle with switches and airlocks that I gave up on trying to decipher the logic of, so alt-tab to Neoseeker I did. But the real offender is the boss. Oh God, the boss. Due to his resemblance to Robin William, I'm going to call him
Patch Adams. This is how the fight against Patch Adams goes:
- It's eight phases long. The first five phases pit you against a quartet of robots.
- Each quartet of robots are vulnerable to a certain element.
- You have to defeat all four robots simultaneously, or the surviving robots will retreat and the phase will start over with new robots at full health.
- One robot will always destroy itself, which triggers the rest to retreat, so you have a limited number of turns to destroy them all before that point.
- Your time is actually limited. There's a thirty minute countdown that doesn't stop for anything. Not even the cutscenes.
I would happily kill the Fume Knight once more than ever face Patch Adams again. He's so astoundingly difficult because he's in the wrong game entirely. He should be the optional superboss in a hardcore RPG, not a mandatory boss in a breezy social-sim. He's not the harbinger of any later difficulty either, because the game goes right back to being a snooze after him. The difficulty-curve of Persona 5 Royal is a flat line with a single spike in the middle, like receiving a prostate exam by a doctor who absent-mindedly dipped his glove in tabasco sauce. It's so staggeringly awful a fight, to introduce so many mechanics at once and expect the player to get a handle on them all in a short space of time.
*
Like the talking cat mentioned above, the game has a frustrating tendency to focus on the wrong characters. The social-links with party members like Ann and Makoto are more about conversing with their incredibly annoying and unlikable friends. More than once a character is built up as a slimeball who looks to have their heart changed, only for you to never confront them and the whole matter is quickly resolved offscreen.
Rank Up! Persona 5 is a game that will fall apart for some on account of its weak plotting, disappointingly lightweight story, and excessive length. But it kept me glued to my gamepad on the strength of its gameplay, polish, and presentation. It's a massive game and trying to topple it completely with my criticism is like trying to knife to death an already beached whale. It's far too big and could have afforded a tighter focus on the elements that mattered. The Royal remaster adds a welcome ton of polish and quality-of-life features, but it also renders a good chunk of the game's underlying systems redundant.
Both the first and final chapters are its strongest, narratively, so I'm more inclined to forgive its countless fuck-ups in the middle. It's far from the best of the "big" games I've played but it still manages to stick the landing. Obviously I'd recommend a loose guide if you want to see every story event in the one playthrough. I chide games like
Red Dead II for going all out on the visuals while leaving the underlying mechanics rusty and unchanged, so I must praise Persona 5 for pushing the hardware towards timeless style over aging polygons, while taking care to examine what's under the hood. You'd never guess this game released on the PS3, years after the console's heyday.
Persona 5 is big fun while it lasts though you will notice when it leans on the most aggravating of anime tropes. Again, sometimes I can't tell if the thing that annoys me is a Japanese thing or a Persona thing. Like Yakuza, this pancake is little overcooked on one side, but you'll enjoy it all the same.

2023.06.05 14:57 Ricosss Effect of Long-term Ketogenic Diet on Serum Alanine Transaminase Levels in Mice (Mus musculus) (Pub Date: 2023-04-01)
https://doi.org/10.12982/NLSC.2023.024 Effect of Long-term Ketogenic Diet on Serum Alanine Transaminase Levels in Mice (Mus musculus)
Abstract
The prevalence of obesity is increasing worldwide over the years. One of the non-pharmacological therapy which is believed to be promote weight loss is ketogenic diet. Nevertheless, the long-term effects which may be caused by this diet are still debating, especially in the liver. This study aimed to determine the effect of long-term ketogenic diet (8 weeks) on serum alanine transaminase (ALT) levels. Twelve male mice were divided into basal diet (BD) and ketogenic diet (KD) group and given intervention for eight weeks adlibitum. Body weight was weighed in pre and post-intervention, while ALT levels were measured only once after eight weeks of intervention. As a result, pre-intervention body weight in the BD group was 25.170 ± 2.858 g and KD group was 27.170 ± 1.329 g (P =0.151). In the post-intervention, body weight in BD and KD group were 44.500 ± 5.244 g and 31.830 ± 5.707 g, respectively (P =0.003). BD group showed a significant difference between pre-and post-intervention body weight (P <0.0001), however, it was not significant in the KD group (P =0.096). After eight weeks, serum ALT levels in BD-fed mice were 90.672 ± 20.786 U/L and in KD-fed mice showed 117.037 ± 19.261 U/L (P =0.046). In conclusion, KD elevated serum ALT levels and attenuated weight gain after 8-week KD supplementation. Keywords: Alanine transaminase, Ketogenic diet, Liver, Mice, Obesity

2023.06.05 13:37 OldSchoolWillie Anyone have a 2014 service manual pdf??
2023.06.05 13:36 AustinBike Order of passwords when logging into a site
I have a NAS on my network that has several shared passwords based on the different services that are running on it, like 192.x.x.x:4001, 192.x.x.x:2267, etc.
When I log into any of the services, it is 90% the NAS console and 10% the other services. This means that when I log in from a browser, Keychain provides a handy popup that has one of the login/password combinations listed with an "other names for 192.x.x.x..." option.
When I login with my iMac, it always defaults to the one I use the most. When I log in from my MacBook it defaults to the one I use the least. So every single time I have to manually select the right login.
Is there any way to change this sequence or set one to always be the default?

I am normally a benefit of doubt kind of person but a little afraid to say I don't anything about car to a car mechanic on MOT day. :(
