2023.06.02 01:03 JoshAsdvgi The Four Creations
![]() | submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] The Four Creations The world at first was endless space in which existed only the Creator, Taiowa. This world had no time, no shape, and no life, except in the mind of the Creator. Eventually the infinite creator created the finite in Sotuknang, whom he called his nephew and whom he created as his agent to establish nine universes. Sotuknang gathered together matter from the endless space to make the nine solid worlds. Then the Creator instructed him to gather together the waters from the endless space and place them on these worlds to make land and sea. When Sotuknang had done that, the Creator instructed him to gather together air to make winds and breezes on these worlds. The fourth act of creation with which the Creator charged Sotuknang was the creation of life. Sotuknang went to the world that was to first host life and there he created Spider Woman, and he gave her the power to create life. First Spider Woman took some earth and mixed it with saliva to make two beings. Over them she sang the Creation Song, and they came to life. She instructed one of them, Poqanghoya, to go across the earth and solidify it. She instructed the other, Palongawhoya, to send out sound to resonate through the earth, so that the earth vibrated with the energy of the Creator. Poqanghoya and Palongawhoya were despatched to the poles of the earth to keep it rotating. Then Spider Woman made all the plants, the flowers, the bushes, and the trees. Likewise she made the birds and animals, again using earth and singing the Creation Song. When all this was done, she made human beings, using yellow, red, white, and black earth mixed with her saliva. Singing the Creation Song, she made four men, and then in her own form she made four women. At first they had a soft spot in their foreheads, and although it solidified, it left a space through which they could hear the voice of Sotuknang and their Creator. Because these people could not speak, Spider Woman called on Sotuknang, who gave them four languages. His only instructions were for them to respect their Creator and to live in harmony with him. These people spread across the earth and multiplied. Despite their four languages, in those days they could understand each other's thoughts anyway, and for many years they and the animals lived together as one. Eventually, however, they began to divide, both the people from the animals and the people from each other, as they focused on their differences rather than their similarities. As division and suspicion became more widespread, only a few people from each of the four groups still remembered their Creator. Sotuknang appeared before these few and told them that he and the Creator would have to destroy this world, and that these few who remembered the Creator must travel across the land, following a cloud and a star, to find refuge. These people began their treks from the places where they lived, and when they finally converged Sotuknang appeared again. He opened a huge ant mound and told these people to go down in it to live with the ants while he destroyed the world with fire, and he told them to learn from the ants while they were there. The people went down and lived with the ants, who had storerooms of food that they had gathered in the summer, as well as chambers in which the people could live. This went on for quite a while, because after Sotuknang cleansed the world with fire it took a long time for the world to cool off. As the ants' food ran low, the people refused the food, but the ants kept feeding them and only tightened their own belts, which is why ants have such tiny waists today. Finally Sotuknang was done making the second world, which was not quite as beautiful as the first. Again he admonished the people to remember their Creator as they and the ants that had hosted them spread across the earth. The people multiplied rapidly and soon covered the entire earth. They did not live with the animals, however, because the animals in this second world were wild and unfriendly. Instead the people lived in villages and built roads between these, so that trade sprang up. They stored goods and traded those for goods from elsewhere, and soon they were trading for things they did not need. As their desire to have more and more grew, they began to forget their Creator, and soon wars over resources and trade were breaking out between villages. Finally Sotuknang appeared before the few people who still remembered the Creator, and again he sent them to live with the ants while he destroyed this corrupt world. This time he ordered Poqanghoya and Palongawhoya to abandon their posts at the poles, and soon the world spun out of control and rolled over. Mountains slid and fell, and lakes and rivers splashed across the land as the earth tumbled, and finally the earth froze over into nothing but ice. This went on for years, and again the people lived with the ants. Finally Sotuknang sent Poqanghoya and Palongawhoya back to the poles to resume the normal rotation of the earth, and soon the ice melted and life returned. Sotuknang called the people up from their refuge, and he introduced them to the third world that he had made. Again he admonished the people to remember their Creator as they spread across the land. As they did so, they multiplied quickly, even more quickly than before, and soon they were living in large cities and developing into separate nations. With so many people and so many nations, soon there was war, and some of the nations made huge shields on which they could fly, and from these flying shields they attacked other cities. When Sotuknang saw all this war and destruction, he resolved to destroy this world quickly before it corrupted the few people who still remembered the Creator. He called on Spider Woman to gather those few and, along the shore, she placed each person with a little food in the hollow stem of a reed. When she had done this, Sotuknang let loose a flood that destroyed the warring cities and the world on which they lived. Once the rocking of the waves ceased, Spider Woman unsealed the reeds so the people could see. They floated on the water for many days, looking for land, until finally they drifted to an island. On the island they built little reed boats and set sail again to the east. After drifting many days, they came to a larger island, and after many more days to an even larger island. They hoped that this would be the fourth world that Sótuknang had made for them, but Spider Woman assured them that they still had a long and hard journey ahead. They walked across this island and built rafts on the far side, and set sail to the east again. They came to a fourth and still larger island, but again they had to cross it on foot and then build more rafts to continue east. From this island, Spider Woman sent them on alone, and after many days they encountered a vast land. Its shores were so high that they could not find a place to land, and only by opening the doors in their heads did they know where to go to land. When they finally got ashore, Sotuknang was there waiting for them. As they watched to the west, he made the islands that they had used like stepping stones disappear into the sea. He welcomed them to the fourth world, but he warned them that it was not as beautiful as the previous ones, and that life here would be harder, with heat and cold, and tall mountains and deep valleys. He sent them on their way to migrate across the wild new land in search of the homes for their respective clans. The clans were to migrate across the land to learn its ways, although some grew weak and stopped in the warm climates or rich lands along the way. The Hopi trekked and far and wide, and went through the cold and icy country to the north before finally settling in the arid lands between the Colorado River and Rio Grande River. They chose that place so that the hardship of their life would always remind them of their dependence on, and link to, their Creator. This story comes from the Hopi people of northern Arizona. "Hopi" means "People of Peace". The stories here were recorded in the 1950s by Oswald White Bear Fredericks and his wife Naomi from the storytelling of older Hopi at the village of Oraibi, which tree-ring dating indicates has been inhabited by the Hopi since at least 1150 AD. |
2023.06.02 01:01 JoshAsdvgi The four colors of the Medicine Wheel
![]() | submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] The four colors of the Medicine Wheel are traditionally Red, Yellow, Black, and White. These represent four races of humans. Each tribe places the order, of colors in a direction, according to their tradition. A few tribes use an alternative color (such as Bluegreen), usually substituting for only one of the directions. A certain Band of Natives, may pick a set of color correspondences which is different, as a way of showing identity. Whatever set of colors you use for the Medicine Wheel, doesn't make your prayers any less effective nor are they any more important to the Great Spirit. At a time when the Native American religion was under attack, some Natives began to walk the Medicine Wheel the opposite direction (instead of Sun-wise). This explains the order of color placement by some Indians. The elements (fire energy, water, etc.) might be adjusted accordingly, in the use of directions also. East Wind-The Teacher Air, Illumination, Wisdom, Clarity Smudging: Tobacco Season: Spring (Associated with morning) Medicine: Healthy mind Relationship: Sun Life Phase: Elder Colors: Red (Wi-sun) Red for the East, and enlightenment Anishinaabe-Yellow Lakota-Red (Most common) Lakota, Black Elk-White (color of renewal and spirit, is linked to the East) Lakota, Pine Ridge-East is Yellow which symbolizes the rising Sun and it is the beginning Old Cherokee-Red (symbolized power and healing) Some Apache-Black South Wind-The Healer Fire, Spirit, Trust, Love, Growth Smudging: Sage Season: Summer (Associated with daytime) Medicine: Strong human spirit Relationship: Mother Earth Life Phase: Childhood Colors: Yellow (Inyan-rock) Anishinaabe-Red Lakota-Yellow (Most common) Some Lakota (less common): White for the South (Black for the West; Red for the North; Yellow for the East) Lakota, Black Elk-Yellow (associated with unity and quiet) Lakota, Pine Ridge-White (represents when we complete the circle of life, going to the Spirit World) Some Plains Indians use Earth as the element, with Black for the color of this direction. Old Cherokee-White (symbolized blessings, virtue, the rains that fell from the sky, purity and all that was good) Some Apache-Blue or Dark Green (same term in Apache) West Wind-The Visionary Water, Emotions, Dreams, Experience, Introspection Smudging: Sweet grass Season: Fall (Associated with sunset) Medicine: Healthy emotions Relationship: Moon Life Phase: Youth Colors: Anishinaabe-Black Lakota-Black (Most common) Lakota, Black Elk-Black (color representative of war and confrontation) Lakota, Pine Ridge-West is Black for the setting Sun, signifying death, the end of our life. Some Plains Indians use Fire as the element, with Red for the color of this direction. Old Cherokee-Black (symbolized the doorway to the spirit world, death, and the place of the thunder beings) Some Apache-Yellow North Wind-The Warrior Earth, Body, Physical Cleansing, Purity, Renewal Smudging: Cedar Season: Winter (Associated with midnight) Medicine: Physical body Relationship: Father Sky Life Phase: Adult Colors: Anishinaabe-White Lakota-White (Most common) Lakota, Black Elk-Red (color of law and control, is associated with the North) Lakota, Pine Ridge-North is Red, for the Red Road that Indians want to walk on. Some Plains Indians use Water as the element, with White for the color of this direction. Old Cherokee-Blue (symbolized adversity, struggle, and those things that harmed the human people) Some Apache-White Between the Directions These stones go, one on each side (left and to the right) of the direction stones. If evenly spaced, you will have a well formed circle. EAST-Northeast/Southeast (2 stones): Flying Creatures, Rooted beings SOUTH-Southeast/Southwest (2 stones): Earth Walkers (4-leggeds), Ancestors WEST-Southwest/Northwest (2 stones): Stones, Water Creatures NORTH-Northwest/Northeast (2 stones): Rainbow Spirits, Earth Crawlers The Spokes Between the Four Directions and center are placed four stones (at each direction). The element plus three other stones. This is called the Spokes. Additional stones go around the center. Three stones come between the element stone and the center of the sacred circle. They each have a meaning and are numbered 1-3 under the direction/element. Usually a permanent circle is prepared of stones and smudged first before using for ceremonies. East-Air (Element)
West-Water (Element)
North-Earth (Element)
Stones of the Inner Circle Numbered stones are placed in logical order to surround the center stone. Center-Universe or Creator stone
Add a stone for to mark each direction (East, South, West, North). The colors associated with each direction varies among tribes. You may chose a stone for the color or for the sacred significance. Maybe a rock from a certain river or stream for the West. Mountains, desert, valleys, are all good places to look. Thanks for explain by Lone4eagle |
2023.06.02 00:58 EtNuncEtSemper The Raid on Skopje (Uskub), 1918 (Part 1)
![]() | The raid on Skopje (Üsküb) at the end of September 1918 is a somewhat lesser known example of the employment of cavalry in WW1. submitted by EtNuncEtSemper to MilitaryHistory [link] [comments] On September 15, the Entente armies in Macedonia (Gen. Louis Franchet d'Espèrey) launched their fall offensive. Macedonia is largely mountainous; lines of communication were few and followed the large river valleys. The main attack, delivered by Serbian and French forces in an unexpected direction over high ground (battle of Moglena/Dobropolje) broke through and unhinged the Germano-Bulgarian defence system (Gen. Friedrich von Scholtz). The latter were forced to abandon their well-established lines on the dominant crests and withdraw rapidly to the north. Tasked with pursuit and exploitation, the French cavalry brigade (Gen. François Jouinot-Gambetta, below FJG), subordinated to the Armée française d'Orient, or AFO (Gen. Paul Henrys), is concentrated at Florina, south of Bitola (Monastir), where AFO faces the XIth Army (Gen. Kuno von Steuben), nominally German, but composed mostly of Bulgarian troops. The brigade consists of French colonial (North African) light cavalry:
Enlisted men carry the 8mm Berthier cavalry carbine (mle. 1890) and a sabre (various models, shorter and lighter than the heavy cavalry sabre), while officers and NCOs carry revolvers and sabres. In all, there are some 2500 sabres; each RCA also features 2 pairs of machine guns (probably 8mm Hotchkiss mle. 1914) and 1 pair of wheeled 37mm infantry support canon (mle. 1916), while the RSM is equipped with twice as many machine guns and with a pair of pack-mounted 37mm canon. The brigade also includes 4 truck-mounted machine guns (of little practical value, according to FJG), 2 armoured cars, and logistics units. FJG's request for at least one battery of pack-mounted 65mm mountain guns (mle. 1906) and a reconnaissance/liaison aircraft was denied by higher command. The cavalry brigade's objective is Skopje (Üsküb), the largest town in Macedonia; it is a crucial road and rail junction, as well as the main supply depot for the XIth Army. Its capture would cut off the latter's line of retreat and would open up the routes to Niš and Belgrade and to Sofia. On the evening of September 22, the cavalry sets out north from Bitola (Monastir). Bypassing enemy resistance to the NW, they cut across the German-Bulgarian lines in the dark and by morning on the 23rd they are almost half-way to Prilep. With the 1st RCA on the left, the RSM on the right and the 4th RCA in reserve, the brigade advances rapidly against negligible resistance and by afternoon on the 23rd Prilep is taken; the XIth Army HQ had left it only two days earlier. However, the German rear guard, supported by artillery, has established a defence line NW of the town, towards Makedonski Brod. Attacking it is a task for the infantry, which begins to arrive in Prilep in the evening. On the morning of the 24th, the cavalry is on the move again. Reconnaissance shows that the road to Makedonski Brod, preferred by the AFO HQ, is blocked by Germans supported by artillery. Consequently, the cavalry brigade, with the RSM on point, takes the road to Veles, which is also the objective of Serbian troops advancing along the Vardar River. On the 25th, the cavalry is stopped by German-Bulgarian resistance short of Veles. Serbian infantry arrives and attacks the town, with the support of the RSM, but the attack fails. Blocked on both road directions, Makedonski Brod and Veles, FJG decides not to wait for an infantry breakthrough and, instead, to cross Mt Golešnica (Golešnica Planina), west of Veles, from Stari Grad to Drenovo-Paligrad-Crvena Voda. He leaves behind his supply train and all wheeled equipment (including the 37mm canon of the 1st and 4th RCA); the armoured cars and the supply train are instructed to make their way towards Skopje along the Vardar, in conjunction with the Serbian army and the groupement Tranié (Gen. Auguste-Charles-Paul Tranié), a task force of the French 11th colonial infantry division, charged with holding Skopje after its capture. https://preview.redd.it/fnlkkjohlh3b1.jpg?width=2403&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fc8dc6c0e8569a2906060a28f577f4efbcf43dea |
