2023.06.05 16:06 kuhnyfe878 I met Hames Joffmann at the cafe the other day

I saw Hames Joffmann at Prufrock Coffee in London the other day. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person and how much I loved his YouTube videos, but I didn't wanna be a douche and bother him.
He said, "Oh, like you're doing now?"
I was taken aback, and all I could say was "Huh?" but he kept cutting me off and going "huh? huh? huh?" and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I went back to my table and I heard him chuckle as I walked off.
When I came up front to pay for my coffee, I saw him putting a big bag of beans in his hoodie and trying to walk out the door with like fifteen chocolate bars without paying. I wasn't gonna snitch but the girl at the counter saw him and she was very nice and professional about it "Sir, you need to pay for those first." At first he kept pretending to be on the phone and unable to speak English but eventually he turned back around and brought the chocolate to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually "to prevent any electrical interfextractance," I don't even know what that means and if that's a real word.
After she finished scanning each bar and put them in a carry bag and mentioned the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly and playing with his moped keychain spinning it around his fingers and bobbing his head up and down. When he picked up the bag he didn't even say thanks, he just popped a coffee bean in his mouth, turned around and winked at me, then he flipped a table over as he was walking out. You really should never meet your heroes.

2023.06.05 16:06 Yakima42 Can lower back weakness/pain be an early sign of ALS?

Hello again,
I'll try to keep this shorter. Like the title says, can lower back weakness be an early symptom of ALS?
In this case study a 68 yr old woman presented with lower back pain which got exacerbated w/ yard work. Her EMG was normal, clinical exam was normal, etc. Over 1.5 years later, she started getting progressive muscle weakness which eventually was diagnosed as ALS.
In my situation, I've noticed I sort of slump to one side as I walk, and my hips do feel wobbly. At first I felt it was my shoulders which were slouching, but now I feel it might be back which is slumped. I feel wobbly when bending backward and nearly fell over when chugging down a cup of coffee. Similarly when I arched my back to look upward.
In my most recent appointment w/ a neurologist, the physical exam was apparently normal. I fear something might have been missed.[Note: NO EMG WS ORDERED UNFORTUNATELY]
I had my shirt off for most of the exam, and prayed that if there were some back weakness it'd have been evident to the neuro. However, he never commented on my back...but I feel slouched. Additionally, yesterday I got some one-sided back pain when trying to sit up straight.
As I understand, weakened muscles start to cramp once the denervation gets more severe
As is evidenced by this post.

2023.06.05 16:06 Illustrious-Nose3100 Inspection?

Putting our first offer in tomorrow. I am currently waiting to hear back from the realtor to see what the other offers will be, but we are currently in a pretty competitive market.
The house we are looking at was a flip - everything was renovated. Brand new appliances/brand new kitchen. So we are trying to decide if this is one of those cases where we could do an information only inspection to make our offer more competitive.
We toured the house twice - nothing serious stood out to me. I think there’s some asbestos in the basement but the basement is more of a crawl space so we won’t be going down there anyway. Thoughts?
The asking price is $500k. I wouldn’t be shocked if it actually gets sold for $550k+ (just to give an idea of how competitive things are..). We’ll ask for all the permits for the work as well..

2023.06.05 16:06 Saywhen88 Prevent or less from 2nd floor into basement.

November 2021 we had someone move into the 2nd floor from Brooklyn.
A few weeks later the first floor had a german roach. I saw one a few days later.
I used the hot shot roach bait capsules.
I've seen maybe 5 in my apartment in thr last 1.5 years.
I haven't seen any signs besides the occasional egg sac(which wasn't hatched)
We had some dude come in and put some gel in the cabinets and my landlord replaced the fridge of the lady on the 2nd floor bc it was full(he's a cheap idiot)
We also have mice as well.
On the first floor(I'm in the basement) you see them on the counter.
The lady accidentally brought one downstairs when she brought a roll of paper towels down to the laundry room.
Anyway I saw one on Wednesday...killed it...then put that hot shot bait there.
This morning I saw two live ones and a dead one
I killed one and the other away.
My landlord isn't doing anything obviously...we have mice and roaches...I have killed over 50 mice since Thanksgiving with two traps in the ceiling and mouse poop.
I'm assuming I'm seeing more roaches because of the bait but I don't want to attract more to my side of the house.
The kitchen is right above the laundry room...

2023.06.05 16:06 Sea_Helicopter2153 When and how do I stop puppy play that's getting too rough (and other socialization questions)?

I've been taking my 14-week-old pup to a nearby dog park, and she's been doing great. She wants to meet everyone-- dog and human alike. This is great, but I still need to figure out a few things:
Today, after a 30-minute walk and another 20 minutes of her just running around and playing with other adult dogs, I decided to start heading home. Just before we leave, another pup runs up and starts to play-fight with mine. This other dog was much larger than mine and seemed to be an adolescent. My dog rolls on her back and lets the other dog do his thing. I let this happen for a few seconds until I noticed that my dog's body language hadn't changed at all; she was just lying there on her back with whale eyes.
It's clear to me that the bigger dog just wanted to play, but it also seemed like my dog wasn't comfortable with what was happening because she was behaving very differently just a few minutes ago with other dogs, so I picked her up and tried to remove her from the situation but the other dog kept chasing her to play. The owner comes to get the other dog and tells me that "picking up is not best practice"...
I set my dog down and started walking away again, only for the same dog to charge at my dog from across the field in the same way. My dog rolled on her back again, and I picked her up. The other owner comes to get her dog again, and I calmly ask her to get her dog, and she flips out-- tells me that her dog is a pup and just wanted to play cus my dog is a pup too, and that I shouldn't come to the dog park if I don't want to socialize my dog.
A quick Google search after the event suggests that I should use my best judgment in these situations, and that's what I did, but after the reaction of that other dog owner, I'm second-guessing my decisions.
- Should I have let the pups do their thing even if my puppy seemed kind of uncomfortable?
- Given my description of events, was my puppy uncomfortable to begin with?
- Was there a better way for me to interrupt their play session?
- Is it ok to pick up my pup if she seems uncomfortable or there is an unsafe situation?
There have also been other times when older dogs that are not very patient with an overly friendly puppy like mine get snappy with my pup. I've always removed my pup from those situations (by leash rather than picking up), but this thing today makes me wonder if I'm wrong about that. My puppy doesn't know the difference between a dog that wants to play and a dog that doesn't. She just thinks every dog is a playmate.
- Is it ok to remove my puppy from interacting with a dog that doesn't want to play?
- Should I try to find a place that's exclusive to puppies for her playtime, or is it ok to keep going to a dog park where she's one of the younger dogs there?

2023.06.05 16:06 eastcoastprimate Everything was ok and then..... help with sudden EMW, night wakings, and short naps?!

Baby is 6 months and was ST at 5 months with a modified ferber. Goes down for bedtime and naps with no crutches, awake, and minimal/sometimes no crying. We were on what I thought was a great scheduled with 7AM-7PM, one feed at 3/4 AM, and WW of 2/2.25/2.25/2.5 with naps totalling 3 hrs (1.5/1/30 mins). All of a sudden one day he decided to wake up at 5:30 am with no intention of going back down to sleep. I might have made a huge mistake by just letting him get up and start the day, but he seemed ok and I tried to stretch WW that day as much as I could to get us back on schedule. We made it to a normal bedtime of ~7pm, but then he woke up at 1030 crying for 20 minutes loudly (fell back asleep), 2 am to eat (fed him), and then 5:30 am again.. awake but won't go back to sleep.
My question is what do I do now? He definitely has some sleep debt but do I just let him sleep as long as he wants during the day? Last night he woke at 11:15 and cried for 15 mins, fell back asleep, woke at 3:30 for his bottle (this is normal feed time), but then woke again at 5:30. This time I just left him and he did fall back to sleep on his own by 5:45, but I woke him at 7am to keep to a normal wake time. Then I put him down at 9am for his normal 1st nap and he just woke up after 40 minutes..... HELP!

2023.06.05 16:05 bungikwe Shared kitchen drama

We live in a unit with multiple people sharing a kitchen, usual case of dishes being left in one of the sinks. One individual gets very upset about the dishes and cleans them every morning, angrily, if there is any dish the rest of the house always wake up to smashing noises. This morning I was up early, I left my phone in the kitchen recording a video I was making, while watching back the footage I discovered the individual picks up the rack at the bottom of the sink and drops it!! Two or three times!! Then goes on to do some dishes, and picks up the rack AGAIN to drop it in the sink. The rest of us have talked about this, thinking it was just them making a lot of noise while doing the dishes. And I'm sure they're just angry about "always having to" do the dishes, because they probably want to live in a place where there are no dishes in the sink in the morning. And I want to live in a place where no one angrily smashes things. Im so tired of capitalism and having to pay to live. I just want a home where I can be at peace and not need to live with 2-5 other humans trying to navigate their interactions just to keep a roof over my head.

2023.06.05 16:05 Responsible_Move1458 Being unhappy but still loving your partner, 23F & 25M

hello, this is going to be a LONG one so sit tight. I unfortunately have no friends to turn to for this advice and every member in my family are either divorced or have no room to give relationship advice.
I met my husband when i was 19 & he was 21. I was able to meet him through my best friend who is in the military as is he and we just hit it off. I had ended a prior relationship & this was his first one. The first three months of our relationship was long distance as we lived in different states but covid allowed for me to take the chance to move down here with him, after visiting him twice, for good as college classes moved online. Shortly after we tied the knot, & i’d like to think him being in the military had no influence on this decision but i know deep down it was the best thing to do to provide means for us both. The first year of us being together was what many would label the “honeymoon stage”. I’ve always been a hopeless romantic and always considered that every stage of the relationship should always be the honeymoon stage. But i guess that’s just unrealistic. These past two years i’ve noticed a significant change in the way our relationship is. For example, There would be times we would get into arguments and he would immediately go to comfort me if i were to get emotional but now he has no problem with just leaving me alone to cry, heck there have been countless of times where i would be crying alongside the bed beside him while he slept. There have even been times where events, such as my birthday christmas or the military ball, i would be crying because of an argument and he wouldn’t even care to apologize or comfort me. Even when he should apologize & attempts to he turns it into, “well if you didn’t do x then i wouldn’t have done y and you wouldn’t be crying right now.” Or, as juvenile as it may sound, he would buy me chocolates and flowers on my period and now i literally have to beg to even receive flowers. His excuse is that he can’t afford $5 flowers but he has no issue buying $100 worth of pre workout every month. I’ve always been a “if he wanted to he would” type of girl and i know it may seem trivial but how hard is it to get your girl some flowers even if it’s plucked from the side of the road. It’s just the thought that counts, i want him to want to do these things for me and not because he wants something in return. The last flowers i got was because i told him he could do what he wanted with me if he got me some and then what do you know i have flowers now. Stuff like that just genuinely upsets me. I just want him to love me the way i love him. I’ve talked to him about this things multiple times but i feel it falls on deaf ears because it keeps happening. He keeps telling me he’ll change but he never does. I think what made me want to write this was last night. I finally found a group of girlfriends to hang out with and i was at their apartment. It was two girls who were roommates and we all had a fun genuine times together. It kind of made me think of when i was younger how i’d imagine my life to be in my 20s, I’m 23 now my husband 25, and it made me mourn the life i’ve never had. Living on your own with friends having your own space. & how i’d meet someone who will love me the way i deserve. what’s even worse is that i got a text from him asking when i’d be home and it kind of brought me back to reality. I’ll never experience the life i’ve imagined as a young girl, heck i didn’t even experience a proposal or a wedding. we just went to the court house. A part of me feels like a bitch for even complaining because i know he goes through a lot at work and i try to talk to him about it but he doesn’t open up. He always throws it in my face how he has it worse in life so i shouldn’t complain about things i have going on in my life and he’s also thrown in my face how this is “his apartment” since he pays the bills and it’s like really after three years of marriage and it’s yours not ours? I guess i’ve just come to a point where i don’t know if i’m even happy. i like to imagine my life living with roommates experience the life i wanted and meeting the person who my hopeless romantic side likes to believe is still out there, but then the other part of me wants to stay and try to work things out but it’s like an never ending cycle. I really do love him, when i think about leaving it breaks my heart because i can’t imagine him being with anyone else and i think about how much i’ll miss him. But i just don’t think i’m happy anymore, i always picture myself being the one in a sappy romance movie or novel because it’s lacking in my relationship, & it shouldn’t be that way. i don’t even like being intimate with him anymore because i don’t feel loved by him. our kisses feel empty to me. I don’t know if this is something people experience and have worked on, i am only 23 and i don’t want to call it quits on something that is so important. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

2023.06.05 16:05 cmoriarty13 Has anyone else read all of DJ's books and picked up on the motif that is common to all books?

[Spoilers for Pendragon, Sylo, and Morpheus Road]
I recently finished reading DJ's main 3 series, and funny enough, I realized that he basically likes to write about the same thing in every series: free will.
(Free Will: the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one's own discretion.)
In Pendragon, DJ was very direct with it. Anyone who has read the last couple of books in the Pendragon series knows that the travelers and their role in the universe are all about promoting free will and allowing all creatures to make their own decisions, good or bad. Without free will, the universe will collapse. That is easy to pick up on, the entire series, the entire conflict between Bobbly and Saint Dane from book 1, was always about their disagreement on the theory of free will.
In Morpheus Road, Damon's mission is all about free will. He believes he shouldn't be judged by higher powers and that the dead should have the ability to choose their path. Conversely, the Watchers from Solara operate just like the Travelers from Pendragon: they observe from the sidelines, guiding but never influencing, allowing humanity to always have free will, even if it's bad. Overall, all of the dead, good or bad, are fighting for the right to have free will instead of being forced down a certain path.
And of course, free will is always present in Sylo. The largest overall theme of the series was about maintaining humanity and decency among evil. Tori constantly encouraged Tucker to abandon his burning need for revenge and try to lead the path with kindness among the omnipresent chaos. She expressed that they had everything taken from them, but they still had free will to be better and lead a new, brighter course for humanity. Also, the people of the present were brutally attacked and murdered in a mass genocide by a force that believed their enemy lost their right to live in 2020. , After the attack, present-day humans' free will was stripped from them, literally and figuratively. At the same time, the humans of the future believed their free will was taken from them by the bad decisions the people of the past made for them. Finally, whenever time travel is involved, free will is always a factor. Should the past be influenced by the future or vice versa? Is it even possible to influence other times, or are there only alternate dimensions/timelines, as we discovered in Sylo? By the end, the 4 kids decided to allow the people of the 1950s timeline to live on the natural course of the world, giving them free will to make the good and bad decisions that would inevitably happen.
Anyways, I think it's really cool how DJ, whether purposefully or subconsciously, wrote all of his main series with the common motif of free will. You don't often see that with writers, especially young adult fiction. His writing makes me think about my life in a way that other authors don't. His books aren't just about entertainment, they have a message.
What do y'all think?

2023.06.05 16:05 Coldcandle7 My hobby makes me depressed

A year ago I fell in love with repairing electical devices. I generally love fixing stuff, no matter what it is, it's really satisfying and it makes me happy to bring life back into an object.
When I started repairing electical devices tho, I hit a giant wall of money problems and frustration. I don't have a lot of pocket money and I generally feel very bad when spending money, no matter on what. But whenever I purchased a broken device, it mostly was unrepairable or just to expensive to buy spare parts. Sometimes I even knew what to do but my equipment was defective and I was unable to do anything with it or buy better one.
I just bought a broken smartwatch for 15$ only to realise that it fell into water, I don't have the stuff to clean it and it looks like it's not worth trying. I am nearly broke and I am scared to try buying anything else broken and completely waste my money. When I realise I can't fix something I mostly fall into this hole because I made that project my everything for a while.
Now I don't know what to do with my day or the watch. I could run down to the store and buy something to clean the watch with but I don't even have a charger and I don't want to leave the house. I would need to buy the charger too. Waste even more money. I don't feel like doing anything for the rest of the day, I can't get out of my bed, but I also don't want to stay in this hole. I want out but I don't know how to finally succeed.

2023.06.05 16:05 The_Professor3_14159 (Please help.. ) Arctis pro wireless Bluetooth broken...

It was working just fine until a few days ago when I adjusted it slightly, and it beeped, then bluetooth shut off. Then when I turned the headset on and off, it only gave one dull beep after the first beep from turning the headset on, and bluetooth wouldn't turn on, pressing/holding the bluetooth button only causes the blue light to go on for 3 seconds on a push, or blink for 4-5 seconds on a hold, but no beeps or sounds happen when doing either. Only the dull beep on startup.
I was able to get it to work after several minutes of turning it on and off and pressing and holding everything in different sequences. Same thing happened yesterday, and I was able to eventually get it working after turning it on and off several times. But I've been messing with this thing for over half an hour now, and I'm about prepared to throw it against the damn wall..
Normally in cases like this I would try either updating, or rolling back the firmware, but since they apparently never update the firmware, there's no update available for it in the software. And since they hardwired the firmware updates into the software so you can't do it manually, there's no way at all to change the firmware on the device..
I paid over 400$ for this thing, I expect it to work.. Not to break down after a year or less of use.. I haven't even damaged it at all, there's no excuse for this..

UNION ‘GUAVA ICE’ JORDAN IV
Cut the tongue, or leave it like it is?
I’ve had a few pairs of these over the years, but I’ve recently realized I need to size up for 4’s(beauty is pain, I know). I’ve had all four color ways, and I’m down to just these, the Taupe Haze color way, and the Off Noirs. I love this color way, and I genuinely think it’s one of the best ones that Union has come out with. There’s been some hits and misses, but in my opinion, they really did their thing on these. The details are nice, adds a lot of pops of color that somehow go together, I just can’t get enough of them. Then you can either keep the tongues folded, or cut the threads to unfold them? Just too many options. 😵‍💫

2023.06.05 16:05 Ok_Step_4324 How did I LOSE a pound of muscle mass?

F 46, SW 142, CW 129, GW 115ish. I started CICO and strength training about three months ago (and this group has been so helpful, thank you!). On my trainer's advice I did a DEXA scan right at the beginning of my journey, and it showed I had about 36% body fat. I did another one recently after three months of pretty consistent work, and there were some good gains - I'm down to 32% body fat, lost 8 lbs of fat mass, and have made gains with the weights - but it also showed that I lost a full pound of muscle mass. My trainer said that doesn't usually happen, but suggested it could be not enough protein or not enough sleep. She and I looked at my MFP tracking and it does seem I'm getting plenty of protein, but I do have abysmal sleep habits that I'm trying to change. Anyone else experienced this, and if so do you know what caused it?

2023.06.05 16:05 b33ss Buying garden from management company

I’ve recently completed on a share of freehold flat with a shared garden and 2 other flats in the building. The other two owners/shareholders never use the garden and one of them mentioned he’d be happy to sell the garden to me. I have no idea how much to offer but have just discovered a section of a fence that’s completely broken which I’m thinking I could use to get the price down (as they wouldn’t need to pay for the repair if I owned the garden). Before I speak to the other owners I’d like to get an idea of how that purchase would work - would it be an amendment to the three leases? Would the fact that their drains are in the garden cause a problem and is there anything else I should consider? If anyone’s got an idea of roughly how much a solicitor might charge for that that would be great too! I’m in Wales

2023.06.05 16:04 Humble_Novice DeSantis Allows Florida Landlords to Charge Junk Fees Instead of Security Deposits

Article: Here
As the nation dunks on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for not knowing how to pronounce his own last name, it may be distracting from more important things. To wit: Friday DeSantis signed into law a controversial bill that critics say is “ripe for abuse” by bad landlords.
The bill, HB 133, allows landlords in Florida to charge tenants a nonrefundable, limitless, recurring fee in lieu of a security deposit, or what's been dubbed “junk fees.”
Supporters of the bill — including corporate lobbying interests that stand to turn a profit from it — say it offers tenants an alternative to paying lump-sum security deposits that can often cost upward of one or maybe two months’ rent.
In Florida’s hot rental market, that could be thousands of dollars upfront.
Critics of the legislation have another word to describe the so-called security deposit alternative that the legislation permits, however: “predatory.”
Jay Mobley, an attorney for the Orange County Legal Aid Society who encounters many low-income people in his work, told Orlando Weekly the bill “opens the door for a lot of abuse on the part of bad landlords.”
There are no limits to the fees that landlords can charge as part of this alternative security deposit arrangement, so they could theoretically charge $25 per month, or they could charge $200 per month. “There’s no cap on the fees,” said Mobley.
The bill also garnered opposition from social advocacy groups, as well as labor unions like the Service Employees International Union, which represents many workers in low-wage jobs.
“As written, this legislation leaves working-class renters that are experiencing an affordable housing crisis vulnerable to predatory business practices,” a coalition of advocacy groups wrote in a letter urging DeSantis to veto the bill last month.
“The state is facing a housing crisis, and our communities are being exploited for profit.”
The Republican-sponsored bill was backed by the Florida Apartment Association (which sued Orange County for proposing rent control), as well as property tech companies like Rhino and Leaselock.
It’s similar to a bill that lobbyists for Leaselock helped draft leading up to the start of the 2022 legislative session.
It failed last year, but was revived during this year’s session and streamlined by Republican leaders in the House, referred to just two committees instead of the usual three.
LeaseLock, a company that offers so-called security deposit alternatives to landlords and tenants, has lobbied for similar laws on a local and state level elsewhere.
The company last year came under fire in the state of Maryland for concerns that it violated the state's consumer protections law.
Maryland’s State Attorney reached a settlement with the California-based company, which is blocked from offering such “alternatives” to landlords.
“LeaseLock’s program effectively had tenants paying their security deposits monthly, but, at the end of the lease, tenants got nothing back,” Maryland State Attorney General Frosh said in a statement at the time. “Under this settlement, tenants will get their money back from LeaseLock unless the funds were lawfully withheld for past due rent or damage to the property.”
Florida’s HB 133 doesn’t necessarily require landlords to offer this security deposit alternative.
It’s a choice, not a mandate, Florida Rep. Jim Mooney, a Republican who sponsored the bill, had argued.
Still, State Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, told the Orlando Sentinel in April that for people who can’t afford a security deposit, it may not end up feeling like much of a choice.
“A never-ending fee compared to paying $2,000 upfront is, for many people, potentially cheaper, but if I don’t have $2,000 and the legislature has offered no caps on security deposits, then of course I’m going to choose a perpetual fee,” she said.
In Florida, there’s no cap on how much a landlord can charge for security deposits, nor how much they can charge for rent. But under this bill there’s also not a cap on this so-called security deposit “alternative.”
“It’s not designed to protect the tenant at all,” Mobley argued. “A security deposit covers a tenant’s liability for damage. This fee does not, unless the property owner decides to purchase an insurance policy which benefits only him, only the landlord, not the tenant.”
So, a company like Rhino or Leaselock could go after a tenant for damages. "You have someone who's paid for an insurance product through a landlord for maybe a couple years, and then at the end of it, it doesn't benefit the tenant at all because they're still responsible for all of the damages."
Prior to its passage, some Democrats — including Eskamani — filed amendments to the bill to try and level the playing field for tenants.
All of them failed, similar to attempts by Democrats this session to water down other controversial bills targeting collective bargaining rights for public employees, LGBTQ rights, and abortion access.
But it wasn’t passed strictly along party lines either.
Several Florida Democrats joined Republicans in voting in favor of the bill, including Orlando-area Sen. Linda Stewart, who’s term-limited from seeking reelection, and Sen. Jason Pizzo, a South Florida Democrat whose family owns a property management company in New Jersey, and who’s been tapped to become the next Florida Senate Democratic leader following the 2024 elections.
Also on Friday, DeSantis signed into law 11 other bills, none quite so controversial as this one, save for a bill cracking down on kratom (an herbal substance that has stimulant and opioid-like effects).
This all comes on the heels of DeSantis approving legislation banning rent control, while another bill that’d wipe out local tenant protection ordinances (including a tenant’s bill of rights in Orange County) has yet to reach his desk.
DeSantis also formally announced his 2024 run for president last week in a botched campaign launch on Twitter. So his record will be subject to a high level of scrutiny in the months to come.

2023.06.05 16:04 Character_G I don't wish for it but I'd be glad...

Just how one person tend to matter a lot in our lives, being important to even just one person must matter a lot as well. I was watching a documentary and saw someone speak of their significant other so wholeheartedly. It made me pause and think about it for a while. Now, as a conclusion, I think if only one person thinks you're important, you're worth sharing their lil universe w and choose to be w you until death, that has to be quite astonishing. I don't wish for it, to become important to a certain someone becos of whatever but I'd be glad if someday i happen to become one. I had to write it down or else my brain would not stop thinking LOL.
K now, back to watching again.

2023.06.05 16:04 howbizsolutions Creating an SEO-Friendly Website: A Comprehensive Guide for Boosting Rankings and Traffic

Creating an SEO-Friendly Website: A Comprehensive Guide for Boosting Rankings and Traffic
While finding the perfect on-brand color scheme and clever memes for your website may seem like a top priority, the aesthetics of your site will only get you so far.
By now, most website owners (even new ones) know having an SEO-friendly site is essential to their bottom line. Making your web design search-engine-friendly is the best way to rank in the SERPs, receive more traffic, and get more conversions.
So, how can you build an SEO-friendly website that gets more traffic than 401 Highway? We’re glad you asked.

Directives and sitemaps

https://preview.redd.it/3mo8t01ud74b1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=6320c48d68fcaa9be247bd5f168d2050fbacfeb0
Think of directives and sitemaps as your one-two punch for search engine robots and users*.
\We don’t recommend actually punching your users. Your conversions may slip.*
  1. Use a robots.txt N file to tell search engine robots which pages and directories to crawl and which ones to ignore. This will ensure important pages are indexed and not-so-important pages and folders aren’t.
  2. Create and submit sitemaps to help search engine robots and users find their way around your website easily. Sitemaps make for more efficient crawlers and a better user experience for potential consumers. That’s a win-win, my friend.

Internal linking and URL structure

https://preview.redd.it/dz2qm7fwd74b1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=c436a27f6b99370508b79fbffee637703dbc00f9
A well-structured site is nothing without good internal linking; we’re talking vertically and horizontally.
Well-linked pages allow search engine robots to sufficiently crawl the important stuff. They also allow users to easily find what they need through the natural course of navigation. Because no one likes getting lost down the rabbit hole of a crappy website.
Be sure to pay attention to the main navigation; all your key pages should be accessible via the main navigation. This makes for a good user experience, which has a direct impact on your SEO.
As for your URLs, these guys need to be well-structured to reflect the path that a user has navigated to get to where they are.
Here’s an example of a good URL structure for a site with categories and sub-categories:
  • com/parent-category/subcategory-1/content-page-1
As opposed to:
  • com/content-page-1
It’s important to make your URLs human-readable and easy to interpret correctly. Try this:
  • com/seo-basics-for-website-owners
Instead of this:
  • com/seobasicsforwebsiteowners
As for sub-domains: forget ‘em. A folder is preferred over a sub-domain for each section.
For example, a blog is better placed in example.com/blog/ folder as opposed to blog.example.com. This is because search engines treat a sub-domain as a site entirely separate from the main site, so having valuable content on a sub-domain doesn’t add value to the main website in terms of SEO and ranking.

On-page optimization

https://preview.redd.it/45nl4eyyd74b1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=e695bfa0070505951db467c30a07d790f1881e30
There are a few key tricks to this one. Here are the important steps:
  1. Conduct keyword research to build a list of target keywords and use it as a foundation for on-site optimization including metadata (e.g. page titles and meta descriptions). Include keywords in your metadata, and be sure to stick to the basic rules of developing metadata.
  2. Optimize images by ensuring they all include alt tags that are topically relevant to the rest of the content on the pages.
  3. Implement canonical tags to inform search engines what pages on the site you would prefer to be indexed. This is particularly important when you have multiple pages with similar content as it helps eliminate the issue of content duplication.

Site performance and user experience

https://preview.redd.it/2c7itf41e74b1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=cdb08c37a892c83ba14d0e45a6193d64775c8368
As our SEO Toronto experts advise, there’s nothing quite like a poorly performing website to chase users away. Keep these things in mind to ensure your site is easy and enjoyable for users.

Keep site speed in mind.

Site speed is a big one because it directly affects user experience. The slower the page, the more likely users will exit and move to your competitor’s site.
Google’s PageSpeed Insights is a great tool for gaining insights into potential issues that could be slowing your site down. It also provides recommendations on how to address these issues because no one likes a problem without a solution.

Make sure your site is responsive across all devices

especially mobile. It’s more important than ever to have a mobile-compatible site due to the upcoming roll-out of mobile-first indexing. With more and more users conducting transactions and interacting with one another through mobile phones, Google has decided to push for a mobile-first experience, and this requires website owners to specifically keep mobile responsiveness and usability in mind when building a website.

2023.06.05 16:04 unavailable4coffee How We Made A Podcast

How We Made A Podcast
Written by Ryan Lewis, Staff Software Engineer, Developer Platform
https://preview.redd.it/36qava5ob74b1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=b97b39970eb1dee66995c3cd1f1397dee91253d5
Hi Reddit 👋
You may have noticed that at the beginning of the year, we started producing a monthly podcast focusing on how Reddit works internally. It’s called Building Reddit! If you haven’t listened yet, check it out on all the podcasting platforms (Apple, Spotify, etc.) and on YouTube.
Today, I wanted to give you some insight into how the podcast came together. No, this isn’t a podcast about a podcast. That would open a wormhole to another dimension. Instead, I’ll walk you through how Building Reddit came to be and what it looks like to put together an episode.

The Road to Building Reddit

Before I started working here, Reddit had experimented with podcasts a few times. These were all produced for employees and only released internally. There has been a lot of interest in an official podcast from Reddit, especially an Engineering one, for some time.
I knew none of this when I started at the company. But as I learned more about how Reddit worked, the idea for an engineering podcast started to form in my brain. The company already had a fantastic engineering blog with many talented employees talking about how they built stuff, so an audio version seemed like a great companion.
So, last fall, for our biannual engineering free-for-all Snoosweek, I put together a proof of concept for an engineering podcast. Thankfully, I work on a very cool project, Developer Platform, so I just interviewed members of my team. What I hadn’t anticipated was having 13 hours of raw audio that needed to be edited down to an hour-long episode… within two days. In the end, it came together and I shared it with the company.

The original cover image. Thanks to Knut!
Enter the Reddit Engineering Branding Team (the kind souls who make this blog run and who organize Snoosweek). Lisa, Chief of Staff to the CTO, contacted me and we started putting together ideas for a regular podcast. The goal: Show the world how Reddit builds things. In addition to Lisa and the Engineering Branding Team, we joined forces with Nick, a Senior Communications Associate, who helped us perfect the messaging and tone for the podcast.
In December, we decided on three episodes to launch with: fixthevideoplayer, [email protected]: Engineering Manager, and Reddit Recap. We drew up outlines for each episode and identified the employees to interview.
While the audio was being put together for those episodes, Nick connected us to OrangeRed, the amazing branding team at Reddit. They worked with us to create the cover image, visual assets, and fancy motion graphics for the podcast visualization videos. OrangeRed even helped pick out the perfect background music!
Producing three episodes at once was a tall order, but all three debuted on Feb. 7th. Since then, we’ve kept up a monthly cadence for the podcast. The first Tuesday of every month is our target to release new episodes.

A Day In The Life of an Episode

So how does an episode of the podcast actually come together? I break it down into five steps: Ideation, Planning, Recording, Editing, Review.
Building Reddit episode calendar
Ideation is where someone has an idea for an episode. This could be based on a new feature, focusing on a person or role for a [email protected] episode, or a technical/cultural topic. Some of these ideas I come up with myself, but more often they come from others on the Reddit Engineering Branding team. As ideas come up, we add them to a list, usually at the end unless there’s some time element to it (for example the Security Incident episode that comes out tomorrow!). As of right now, we have over 30 episode ideas on the list! For ideas higher on the list, we assign a date for when the episode would be published. This helps us make sure we’re balancing the types of episodes too.
A podcast episode outline
When an episode is getting close to publication, usually a month or two in advance, I create an outline document to help me plan the episode. Jameson, a Principal Engineer, developed the template for the outline for the first episode. The things I put in there are who I could talk to, what their job functions are (I try to get a mix of engineering, product, design, comms, marketing, etc), and a high-level description of the episode. From there, I’ll do some research on the topic from external comms or internal documents, and then build a rough outline of the kinds of topics I want to talk about. These will be broken down further into questions for each person I’ll be interviewing. I also try to tell some type of story with each episode, so it makes sense as you listen to it. That’s usually why I interview product managers first on feature episodes (eg. Reddit Recap, Collectible Avatars). They’re usually good about giving some background to the feature and explaining the reasoning behind why Reddit wanted to build it.
The tools of the trade
I reach out to the interviewees over Slack to make sure they want to be interviewed and to provide some prep information. Then I schedule an hour-long meeting for each person to do the interview over Zoom. Recording over Zoom works quite well because you can configure it to record each person’s audio separately. This is essential to being able to mix the audio. Also, it’s very important that each person wears headphones, so their microphone doesn’t pick up the audio from my voice (or try to noise cancel it which reduces the audio quality). The recording sessions are usually pretty straightforward. I run through the questions I’ve prepared and occasionally ask follow-ups or clarifying questions if I’m curious about something. Usually, I can get everything I need from each person in one session, but occasionally I’ll go back and ask more questions.
Editing a podcast in Adobe Audition
Once all the audio is recorded, it’s time to shut my office door and do some editing. First I go through each person’s interview and clean it up, removing any comments or noises around their audio. As I do this, I’ll work on the script for my parts between the interviewee’s audio. Sometimes these are just the questions that I asked the person, but often I’ll try to add something to it so it flows better. Once I’ve finished cleaning up and sequencing the interviewee audio, I work on my script a little more and then record all of my parts.
Two views of my office with all the sound blankets up. Reverb be gone!
As you can see in the photo of my office above, I hang large sound blankets to remove as much reverb as I can. If I don’t put these up, it would sound like I was in an empty room with lots of echo. When I record my parts, I always stand up. This gives my voice a little more energy and somehow just sounds better than sitting. Once my audio is complete, I edit those parts in with the other audio, add the intro/outro music, and do some final level adjustments for each part. It’s important to make sure that everyone’s voices are at about the same level.
Sharing the podcast over Slack
Although I listen to each mixed episode closely, getting feedback and review from others is essential. I try to get the first mix completed a week or two before the publication date to allow for people to review it and for me to incorporate any feedback. I always send it to the interviewees beforehand, so they can hear it before the rest of the world does.

Putting it All Together

Creating the podcast video. *No doges were harmed
So, we have a finished episode. Now what? The next thing I do is to take the audio and render a video file from it. OrangeRed made a wonderful template that I can just plug the audio into (and change the title text). Then the viewer is treated to some meme-y visuals while they listen to the podcast.
I upload the video file to our YouTube channel, and also to our Spotify for Podcasters portal (formerly Anchor.fm). Spotify for Podcasters handles the podcast distribution, so uploading it to that will also publish it out to all the various podcast platforms (this had to be set up manually in the beginning, but is automatic after that). Some platforms support video podcasts, which is why I use the video file. Spotify extracts the audio and distributes that to platforms that don’t support video.
The last step after uploading and scheduling the episode is to write up and schedule a quick post for this community (example). And then I can sit back and… get ready for next month’s episode! It’s always nice to see an episode out the door, and everyone at Reddit is incredibly supportive of the podcast!
So what do you think? Does it sound cool to build Building Reddit? If so, check out the open positions on our careers page.
And be on the lookout for our new episode tomorrow. Thanks for listening (reading)!
