2023.06.06 15:16 Vast-Passenger1126 [Discussion] Bonus Book: The Vampire Lestat, Part 7, Ch 2 - Part 7, Ch 11
Welcome back blood suckers! We return with the next part of the Anne Rice vampire saga. I don’t know about you guys, but this section was a struggle for me. I was hoping Marius was going to snap Lestat back to reality and send him on his way to meet Louis. Instead, we got the backstory of all backstories without even a mention of Lestat for seven chapters. At times, I wished I could crawl into the dirt and experience my own ‘first death’, but I’m curious to hear what y’all thought so let’s dive in!
Part 7 Chapter 2: Lestat makes his way through Marius’ house and realizes it’s the first time he’s seen a vampire’s home fully stocked with awesome mortal stuff (including “giant stuffed beasts” which I originally thought said breasts). The guy really has everything: amazing murals, huge library, menagerie, indoor greenhouse, and sculpture hall. Lestat is eventually pulled away from these incredible sights by Marius’ heartbeat.
Chapter 3: Marius and Lestat sit down for the long-awaited chat and we learn that what I last week called ‘Lestat’s pity party/hunger strike in the dirt’ was actually his first death and is totally normal for vampires. Marius has such strong ESP that he can tell what’s going on with vamps all over the world, which is how he knew about Lestat (so vamp GPS does exist!). But, unlike other old vamps, Marius chooses to speak as he finds the ESP imprecise and prefers a consensual mode of communication. He also opts to move like a human as he finds this elegant and all those vamp powers tire him out. Marius wants to share his vampire secrets with Lestat and show him Those Who Must Be Kept, but warns him that he will still need to find ‘his own reasons to exist’. Forgetting all about the emo phase he’d just been having, Lestat is like, “Yeah, yeah whatever. You don’t even know how perfectly awful I am. But why me?” Marius tells Lestat he’s the chosen one since he’s an innocent and curious dude who’s happy just living in the moment. We learn that Marius was born at the start of the Roman Empire and that being born ‘on the cusp of the old way of seeing things’ also unites him with Lestat. Plus, they were both turned into vamps because they were…pretty? Before Marius will continue his story, he tells Lestat he wants to show him Those Who Must Be Kept.
Chapter 4: Marius takes Lestat down a creepy staircase to an ancient Egyptian vampire shrine where two figures are revealed. Lestat thinks they are the most incredible statues he’s ever seen until he touches the woman’s cheek and realizes…THEY’RE ALIVE! Lestat is initially spooked, but slowly understands that Marius cares for these beings and can’t really do anything else to them without being cruel. Lestat apologizes for being a rude scaredy cat and Marius tells him Those Who Must Be Kept don’t even eat anymore and haven’t had a drop of blood in 300 years. Yet even without food, they can move or control things with their mind, but never do so in Marius’ presence. At Marius’ urging, Lestat stares at the figures and tells them how beautiful they are and the woman’s name, Akasha, appears on his lips. Mesmerized, Lestat wants to KISS THE WOMAN AND SPIT BLOOD INTO HER MOUTH until he realizes he’s fucking nuts and pulls back, begging Marius to go upstairs. As they leave, one of Those Who Must Be Kept opens up the tabernacle, proving all Marius said true. Marius has a little meltdown upstairs wondering why Akasha revealed her name to Lestat and not him, her protector for the past 17 CENTURIES, but snaps out of it and is ready to tell Lestat the whole story.
Chapter 5: Marius was an illegitimate son in a rich Roman household who had everything he could desire except the love of his dead mother (but at least she gave him her beautiful Aryan looks). One evening, he’s in a Gaul tavern, so busy writing, drinking wine and doing his own philosophizing that he doesn’t notice a creepy giant staring at him. They have a long chat about Egypt and religion and, just when we’re about to die of boredom, the stranger tells Marius he is going to become a god and then knocks him out. Marius comes to in a wagon being pulled through a forest and eventually arrives at a Celtic fortress where he realizes that if he doesn’t want to become a human sacrifice he “had better try to get the hell out of here.” (Apparently, Marius also cannot keep the same speaking style).
Chapter 6: Marius’ captor, Mael, and his Druid pals are now dressed in white robes and tell Marius he will drink the Divine Blood and become a father of gods. Until this occurs, Marius is kept under constant watch and passes the time getting drunk and eating. To keep his boredom at bay, he listens to Mael tell him all about their gods, especially the god he is to become who goes by many names including ‘the lover of the mother’. This god takes blood sacrifices every full moon but on All Saints Day gets to have a yummy feast and make prophecies. He serves the Great Mother who ‘is without visible form but nevertheless present in all things’ (Ok, so Mother Earth, not a literal mother. Phew). Marius recalls others who have served this goddess and things don’t go particularly well for them (castration, dismemberment, etc.) so he’s not feeling too great about his upcoming transformation and continues to get drunk and yell at Mael. Eventually, Marius’ hair is long enough and it’s time for the feast. After a little makeover, Marius is placed in a wagon and driven deep into the forest. He is shocked to see the Druids have made two massive wicker figures and are filling them with evildoers who will be sacrificed in the ceremony. Marius is taken to the ‘sanctuary of the gods’, a grove with creepy faces carved into the trees and skulls on spikes. A voice comes from within one of the trees, double checking that Marius is indeed the chosen one, and then invites Marius to come on down.
Chapter 7: Descending a set of winding stairs, Marius is no longer afraid, but excited that all the nonsense Mael’s been spouting is true and he really is about to become a god. But this feeling doesn’t last long as he comes face to face with a shrivelled, burnt skeleton-like figure (but with beautiful hair of course). The figure tells Marius he will make him a god, but only if he promises to escape the Druids, go down to Egypt and figure out why the sun is burning up all the gods of darkness (aka vampires if you haven’t caught on). Marius is turned into a vampire and, as the blood is passed back and forth, is given his own set of vamp rules to follow. The figure drains Marius one last time and is like, “Go feast. But don’t forget to run away after. I’ll be dying now. Buh bye.”
Chapter 8: Confirming the Druids’ hopes and beliefs, Marius emerges and he is STARVING. He feasts on dozens of men and then plays judge for a while until finally the festival is over and Marius knows he must escape and go to Egypt. He tries to use his god status to persuade the Druids to leave him alone, but they’re not falling for his nonsense and try to force him down into the tree dungeon. They grab the old, shrivelled god out of the tree and casually chuck him into the fire, and his last words to Marius are to obey his command and go to Egypt. Pretending he’s a weak, scared boy, the Druids loosen their grip on Marius and he is able to break free. Sprinting into the forest, Marius finally realizes he has some sweet vamp powers but doesn’t have time to appreciate these as he's being pursued by thousands of Celtic worshippers. He still manages to escape and digs down into the Earth for his first day of vamp sleep. When he wakes, Marius is hungry and is like, “How the hell was that burnt guy only eating once a month!?” After some dinner, he decides he will go down to Egypt, but not for the gods, just to have a vamp adventure! Yet when he finally arrives, Marius realizes how alone he is among mortal men and cannot bear being ‘the relentless bringer of death’ so continues to seek out the old gods.
Chapter 9: In Alexandria, a god appears to Marius in the middle of the night and the next evening something speaks to him, telling him to come to a door. Down another windy stairway, Marius finds an underground temple where he encounters another burnt vamp god with beautiful hair who’s like, “Hey, how come you’re not all crispy?” We then meet the Elder, a vamp god that survived ‘the burning’ and who Marius recognizes as the one that came to him the previous night. Breaking his years of silence, the Elder tells Marius that vampires started BY ACCIDENT four thousand years ago. After Osiris was killed, dismembered and then put back together by Isis (except his penis of course), he became the immortal ruler of the dead and drank blood sacrifices. But who knew that drinking blood would have so many fun side effects!? So Osiris and Isis became the first vampires. Despite their blood creating stronger and stronger vamps, Osiris and Isis eventually got stingy and refused to let others drink from them, while also starving themselves. Because of the blood connection, whatever happens to Isis and Osiris happens to all other vampires, so it was not so nice of them to have these suicidal ideations. Their keeper eventually decided this must all be a big joke so left Osiris and Isis out in the sun. But surprise, surprise, it was all true and thus caused the BBQ vampire fest. The other vamps managed to get Osiris and Isis (who only got a nice suntan) back underground, but they no longer chat or eat and DEFINITELY aren’t letting anyone have their blood now. But guess what!? That’s just the version told in Egyptian mythology. Now we get to learn the real story. (And at this point I let out a vamp-volume scream and curse Anne Rice’s ghost.)
Chapter 10: Two humans, Akasha and Enkil, came into Egypt from ‘some other land’ and taught the cannibal Egyptians how to play nice and worship Mother Earth. One day, a furniture-throwing, dirty-language-loving, demon was causing problems with the royal steward so Enkil decided to go have a chat with it. After a night in the haunted house, Enkil emerged with the knowledge that demons are so grumpy because they don’t have a body! Akasha then joined her husband for another wild night in the demon house. Everyone else was terrified of the demonic commotion and ran away, except for a small group of men who were fed up with the Mother Earth ways and wanted to go back to eating people. These men entered the house in the middle of the night and stabbed Enkil and Akasha over and over. Out of nowhere, Gabrielle emerged and was like, “You done fucked up now.” Ok, just kidding that didn’t happen. But it was a horrible idea because the stab wounds were now convenient openings for the demon to enter the bodies of Enkil and Akasha. When their blood mixed, a new creature was created, with the intelligence and souls of the mortals and the mind reading abilities of the demon. But the worst of all was that they could only be kept alive by drinking blood! Enkil and Akasha also learned immediately that fire and sunlight would kill them. The King and Queen tried to keep all of this a secret, but people were a bit weirded out that they no longer saw their mighty rulers during the day and could only worship at night. Conspirators continued to try and kill Enkil and Akasha, but they always magically healed, so people instead sought to gain their immortality by taking their blood and drinking it. We learn that the vampire transformation is only successful if the mortal is near to death so we don’t know if some people figured this out or if Enkil and Akasha chose to pass on their ‘gift’ to people out of loneliness, but more vampires were created and spread throughout the world. In an attempt to rationalize what happened to them, Enkil and Akasha placed themselves within the world of myth and made up the story of Osiris and Isis. This went well for a few thousand years, until societies began to open up their temples to the sun god and let all the vamps burn to a crisp, leaving only a few places on Earth where vampires gods were left in peace. We learn that there have always been rogue vampires who don’t need no goddess and just want to have fun. But no matter what type of vampire they were, they all went crispy when Mother and Father were put out in the sun. As the story finally comes to a close, Marius is like, “I don’t believe this crap,” and storms out of the temple, laughed out by the Elder.
Chapter 11: As Marius lays in bed at night, he has to admit that the whole story may actually be true, but is still pissed because he wants to be an individual, not a host to a blood-thirsty demonic parasite. After getting drunk on blood and coming to terms with his destiny, Marius decides he has to see this Mother and Father and hide them in order to keep them (and thus all other vamps) safe forever. Conveniently, the Mother then appears to Marius, telling him to take her and the Father out of Egypt. The Mother leads Marius out into the desert where he finds a trap door and...you guessed it...another twisty staircase! At the bottom, Marius finally meets Akasha and Enkil. A burnt vamp suddenly appears out of nowhere and wants to put them back into their chamber, but Enkil and Akasha decide they’re going to move on their own which terrifies burnt vamp and makes Marius weep uncontrollably. Just to see what happens, Marius convinces burnt vamp to try and drink from Enkil, who responds by throwing him across the room. Marius feels bad so lets burnt vamp drink from him, and then tells him to get the eff out and not let anyone in to the crypt. Marius steals two mummy cases, puts Akasha and Enkil in them and temporarily buries them outside his house while he makes plans to flee Egypt. The Elder appears and it’s revealed that he was the keeper who put the Mother and Father out in the sun. Marius is like, “Don’t worry, bro. I got it from here,” but the Elder won’t let them go without a fight. The Elder is much stronger and a more experienced fighter, but Marius goes for the old eye sockets and gets some surprise back up from Akasha who crushes the Elder like a bug and lights him on fire. Sealing his fate as their guardian, Akasha allows Marius to drink from her.

2023.06.06 15:09 JPDG Empty Mirrors: Finding Your Roleplay Style
| We've seen a lot on our roleplay server, both before and after the Gloomrot update. During that time I've encountered many players who are perhaps intimidated by the idea of roleplaying online or don't know where to start. In this post, I'm going to break down several of the roleplay styles I've seen. I hope it gives you an idea of the range of online RP and some of the ways you can make it your own. If you take one thing away from this, it's that there are many viable ways to roleplay & one is no better than another. Play how you love to play. 1. The Grinder This is the type of player who loves to farm. When they see you in-game, they'll happily be in-character (IC). However, they don't go out of their way to look for roleplay. They rarely post stories in Discord and often have a bare-bones backstory. If they do take an RP role on the server, it's commonly in the form of a merchant or trader. If you're looking for it, they probably have it. They got to end-game in two days and can already solo Adam. Their roleplay is short and sweet. It won't last long because there is always more to grind. I'd like to stress that this is a completely viable form of RP. I love V-Rising and enjoy the gameplay immensely. I enjoy the grind from time to time. It's actually a great way to get out of your castle and meet up with other players. 2. The Author Somewhat opposite of the Grinder, the Author is always writing. His character application is four posts long and his backstory is completely flushed out. They are fast typers. Most often they can rattle off four or five sentences during an RP scene in the time you can write one. They're active on Discord roleplay channels. Their game progression is slower because they are busy writing a novella. This can be an intimidating form of roleplay to some. Not everyone has the time, skill (yes, writing is a skill), or patience to write exhaustively. Of course, they make great roleplayers and will often help others with their character development. 3. The Couple Couples roleplay together. They are rarely on without each other and have to be together for almost every roleplay encounter. In V-Rising, they commonly have an RP dynamic like Lord and Lady, brother and sister, or master and servant. Their backstories intertwine and their in-game roleplay plays well off of each other. If you want to roleplay with one, the other will show up. Couples, whether they be friends or more, are always great to have in-game. They bring a rich roleplay dynamic that others can see when interacting with them. Nyhx and Neives RPed as brother and sister. 4. The Event Planner Event planners don't just meet up for roleplay, they plan ahead. Commonly outgoing socialites, they plan parties, boss fights, or farming times together. Why play alone when you could meet up for RP and play together? They are commonly the first to have a full clan and love to invite others into their gaming experience. Event planners make a wonderful glue to a community. Gaming can be such a solo experience. It's good to have social players who are creating opportunities to join them in their story. 5. The Roleplay Queen Roleplay queens are here to roleplay, roleplay, and roleplay. They hate farming and could care less about progressing through the game. They can set up shop in southern Farbane and never leave. The only reason they craft early-game armor is that the bone armor looks shoddy. They'll often trade what little they have for cosmetic items. On day one of joining your server they're asking to increase the drop rates to x3. They also want all of your bricks, planks, and glass so they can make their castle look pretty. For roleplay. Godwin and the scientist, Electra, discuss peculiar dreams. 6. The Mixed Approach This player has a bit of everything. I daresay that's where most people fall in the roleplay spectrum. I tend to land here. They bounce between knocking out the game, OOC (out-of-character) talk in Global Chat, and sporadic RP meet-ups. They like to write but they're not selling a book anytime soon. Conclusion Again, it's good to be aware that any type of roleplay listed is completely viable (along with others not mentioned). I strongly encourage players to understand how they like to RP and not try to mimic another's style. Play how you love and don't worry about adhering to any type of norm. All the best! https://redd.it/11e34ce Previous:
https://redd.it/13ymf4y When Quin awoke the next morning to his alarm, he felt drained. He hated the mornings when he slept soundly through the night only to awaken feeling like he needed to go back to bed. Judging from Mae’s puffy eyes and the downcast look on her face, she felt the same way. They woke up the same way they had gone to sleep, Mae’s head resting on Quin’s chest. He surmised that this was a heavy night’s rest, no tossing and turning. Mae gave him a quick squeeze of a hug, and then swung herself upright, sitting on the edge of the bed. She then got up and trotted over to the sink, splashing water on her face and massaging her eyes. Her short hair and habit of wearing it wildly meant that her bed head gave her a natural mohawk, fitting for her style. Wiping her face down, she returned to the bed and sat down next to Quin, who had begun to make his effort to get up. They sat side by side silently, relishing the quiet offered by Quin’s chamber.
“C’mon, breakfast,” Mae said, pushing herself up off the bed using Quin’s shoulder. “Maybe we can beat the crowd?”
Quin sluggishly stood up and strode toward the door behind Mae, unsure how and if he wanted to greet the day. As they exited the room, several officers from different sections eyed them suspiciously with sly grins. Mae seemingly ignored everyone, though Quin couldn’t help noticing some passers-by with a nervous glance. They strode through the corridors, heading toward the cafeteria. As they were entering, Quin stole a glance around and immediately saw Pepper, surrounded by a few of her Military crew as well as Liza. He felt a tug on his sleeve and saw Mae’s head inclined in the opposite direction. He followed her away from that group and sat down with her at a bench on the perimeter of the room. He must have looked glum as he sat down, because Mae leaned over the table to whisper to him.
“Hey, don’t worry, I’m positive the rumors will die down soon,” she said reassuringly.
“It’s not just that,” he said as he tapped the tablet at the end of his table and a tray of food shot out across the table to land in front of him. “Pepper didn’t seem to be interested in talking to me.”
“Oh,” Mae said stiffly. “What did she do?”
“Well, nothing really, I don’t think she even saw me come in,” Quin admitted. “But I haven’t spoken to her since we got back, not even with a message. And I’m sure that the rumors aren’t helping.”
“Yeah, plus you came in with me,” Mae sighed.
“Well, uh, what do you mean?” Quin asked.
“Liza and me breaking up is going to do you no favors with Pepper, Quin,” Mae said, rolling her eyes.
Quin sighed and glanced over at Pepper’s table. Her head was down, exchanging with Liza and the rest of the people gathered in the group. She wasn’t even stealing a look over at Mae, let alone Quin. He grew a little more worried. He tried a few bites of his food but found that amount was about all that he could stomach. Mae was similarly not eating much. He pushed his tray away and leaned back, head tilted fully backward, staring at the ceiling. After sighing deeply, he swung out of the bench and stood up.
“Well, there’s no delaying it. I should get to the lab. You’ll be okay?” he said, looking at Mae. She gave him a weak smile and a wave.
“Meet me here for dinner?” she asked.
“Definitely, seven o’clock,” he nodded and turned, making toward the double doors. He purposefully avoided looking anywhere around the cafeteria, though he did feel eyes following him as he made his exit.
I’d give anything to have an invisibility cloak, he thought. Just as he got to the door, the moment of relief at his fingertips as they whisked open, he heard a shout from behind him over the din.
“Quin! Hey QUIN!” came a higher voice. He looked around over his shoulder and saw Pepper coming straight at him at a brisk pace. She slid to a stop in front of him. “Hey, can we talk?” Her head was inclined toward the open doors, indicating that she meant privately.
He acquiesced and followed her as she walked out through the doors. They kept walking down the corridor, silent, not looking at each other but both seeming to be searching for a moment when a third party wouldn’t be around to interrupt them. Finally, after a few minutes of aimless walking, Pepper turned toward him and asked, “Where are you headed?”
“Um, research section, I’ve got lab the first shift,” he said, thumb over his shoulder pointing down one pathway.
“Oh okay, I’m this way,” she said pointing in a different direction.
“Okay,” he said, falling silent. He didn’t know what Pepper was going to say, and was hesitant to start lest he assume she was mad, or upset, or confused, and he would in turn put his foot in his mouth.
You’ve got to say something though, he thought,
the silence has been too long. “So, um, I, uh,” she said suddenly. “I heard about what happened with Nova.” Her eyes were boring into his, the deep brown color making him feel like he was filled with ice. Her tone, however, seemed to show more warmth than he was expecting.
“Yeah, um—" he said, nervously clutching the back of his right arm with his left hand. “Yeah, I imagine that’s gotten around already, the way this ship is.”
“I can’t imagine how stressful that must be. Was Fuentes pissed?” she asked. Again, her eyes said coldness but her tone was almost gentle.
“Like you wouldn’t believe. Nova’s on full lock down. I’m surprised I’m not as well, though there aren’t a lot of places around the ship I’d like to go right now. I think everyone is mad at me. Not just Fuentes. Save for maybe Mae.”
“Yeah…” Pepper said, stopping short of continuing. There was another steady pause between them as they both looked around anywhere but at each other.
“Shame about what happened between her and Liza, right?” Quin offered nervously, hoping that they could just break the tension and put it to rest.
“Yeah, they’re being stupid,” Pepper nodded.
“Well, I don’t know about stupid,” Quin said without thinking.
“What do you mean?” Pepper challenged sharply.
Quin gulped and continued tenuously, “Well, I mean, uh…well, Liza fooled around with someone else, right? They broke up ‘cuz Liza betrayed her.”
“Mae’s not a total saint, Quin, despite what you may think. I know you are friends, but Liza said Mae was overbearing sometimes.” Whatever warmth that was in Pepper’s voice evaporated. Her voice matched the coldness of her eyes. To add to the effect, she crossed her arms, an act that somehow made her seem much taller. Quin shrunk away a little bit.
“That doesn’t justify cheating on someone. If that’s how Liza felt, she should have said something,” Quin shot back, though he found his voice was much less sure of itself than his words were.
“You have no idea what you are talking about. You haven’t been around for any of their dinners. You’re always in that lab, or wandering around clueless, with that distant look in your eyes. If you tuned in from time to time, you would know that theirs wasn’t a healthy relationship.”
“I’m not that distant, and I know only what Mae told me. So yeah, I’ve got her side on this, but she’s my friend,” he said, his tone growing more and more sharp.
“So that’s it, you’re just gonna take her side on this, regardless of what I say,” Pepper shot back.
“Well, you haven’t been too fair either, given what each of them has done,” Quin said, his hands now on his hips.
“I said they were both being stupid. BOTH,” she retorted. “And so are you.”
“That’s great,” Quin said acerbically, though his voice was breaking and he felt his eyes watering a bit.
What the hell is wrong with me, he thought as he reached up to wipe his eye. “You can fit in fine with everyone else. That’s great for you. Tell me how I’m being stupid.”
Pepper let his hurt go unnoticed, as she pounced, “You’re being stupid because not everything is about you, Quin. You don’t always have to be the victim, and you don’t have to cry about every injustice in the world.”
“And you don’t have to kneejerk your way into being so mean anytime someone challenges you on something,” Quin sniped back. Bostwick was right that the stress was starting to pile up so high that it was becoming unbearable. Quin couldn’t believe that he was lashing out for no apparent reason, other than that yet another person was mad at him.
But she’s not another person, Quin thought.
This time, it’s Pepper. The look on Pepper’s face told him that she had had enough of their conversation. “You can be Mae’s friend without thinking her shit smells like roses. There’s a difference between friendship and blind loyalty. Stand for something.” She turned to walk away.
“At least I have someone worth being blindly loyal to,” Quin half-shouted after her, though he felt like his reasoning was getting away from him. Here he was, at war with his own emotions for what felt like the dozenth time in the past twenty-four hours.
“OH, GROW A SPINE AND DEFLATE YOUR HEAD!” she ended the argument by shouting over her shoulder.
He spun on his heels and stormed off to the research section, arriving while there were still only a few people scattered around the lab. By the time he had reached the bay doors, his temper had given way to the dejected feeling driving him through the day. No one greeted him as he trudged over to his workstation, though he noticed at least one of the techs stealing a glance at him. Pulling up his workscreen, he logged into his email. At the top of his docket, he found a blinking email from Captain Fuentes marked urgent. Opening it, he found a reiteration of the rules she had laid down verbally in the Logistics bay. He could hear the measured anger in her voice as he read the email in his head.
He sighed heavily as he began the day’s work, clearing through all the ship’s systems and making sure that no other damage was done during Nova’s occupation. A few times throughout the day, he thought of pulling up a dialogue box and trying to speak to her, to reach out to Nova and try to get through. But he found that he was unable to think of any good words to start, and his head was already full and fuzzy with the voices of Fuentes and Pepper shouting, Mae’s deep sadness, and Bostwick trying to gently reassure him.
Quin skipped lunch, though he couldn’t tell if the nauseous feeling in his stomach was from hunger or from a repulsion at the thought of food. Throughout the day, techs and officers came and went in the lab, though Quin kept his head down and his eyes fixed on lines of code, acting as if anything he was reading was being processed by his brain. He found that most systems were in working order, though he decided to do a double-check on the Logistics bay. In the files, he found a folder created by Nova with several different video clips, some of which she showed while they were trying to negotiate with her. He scrolled through them and flicked one open. Then another. He couldn’t tell if he was mad at her for what she did, or himself for being the inadvertent cause, or her again for not simply thinking it through.
When Quin finally pulled up from his workstation, the room seemed a bit dim. Though they were in full flight and had no external point of reference, Quin felt it was late. A glance at his workstation clock confirmed it was just about dinner time. He transferred a certain amount of work to his tablet so that he could return to work after dinner in the privacy of his own room. Nova didn’t appear all day, though he couldn’t blame her, given how he was feeling. He stood, turning around toward the doors and saw no one in the lab. What he really wanted was to have another conversation with Tess, but all he could do was write her a message that would eventually be transferred once the relay was up. It would pale in comparison to the face to face time he had back on Rhea. Then again, he found himself promising to write the message once he got back to his chamber. He trudged out of the bay in the same manner that he entered, at once nervous about encountering other people, dejected at the thought of the many people who held him with the ignoble title of “Creator of Nova,” and frustrated that he had handled the conversation with Pepper so poorly.
I wish I was famous for creating something that wound back time, he thought,
because I would certainly use it right now to redo the last forty-eight hours. That would make his life a lot simpler.
There’s a sci-fi movie for you, he remarked to no one, though he shook his head, disagreeing with the other voice.
Nah, time travel flicks always end up with the writer’s head up his own ass. He glumly strode through the corridors, not meeting the gaze of anyone passing by, half-tempted to return to his chamber and skip dinner.
No, you agreed to meet Mae for dinner and you can’t back out of that. A promise is a promise. Dinner passed relatively painlessly. Mae had found the same seats at the edge of the crowd, so they had relative privacy. She had also taken the liberty of punching up his dinner in the tablet, and he found that she had apparently been observing him. Though the Standard Issue meals were all uniform and technically synthetic foods, the designers thankfully allowed enough variation to pick the flavor of what they would be eating. Quin always preferred the Latin American meals for the spicy and savory flavors over the richness of Eastern European or the saltiness of Southeast Asian, especially when he would have to force himself to eat. He realized he had barely taken in anything all day and his body was screaming at him. He began to scarf some food while Mae gazed absently at his tray. The conversation had quickly devolved just before.
“I saw you leave with Pepper,” Mae had asked. “Yeah, it was…a complete disaster,” Quin said. “Don’t tell me you guys broke up too,” Mae said, shocked. “We would have had to have been ‘together’ to break up, but yeah, I would say she isn’t happy with me,” Quin said, his face in his hands. He quickly recounted their conversation to Mae. As he gave her the line by line, a smirk showed through the tired and saddened expression that Mae had seemingly worn all day. “What?” Quin asked, taken aback. “Well, Quin, you are remarkably sweet, but I have to agree with Pepper, as much as I wouldn’t like to,” Mae said. “You were pretty stupid.” “What do you mean? Not you too…” he said, completely astounded. “I mean, you can’t tell someone you like that you trust someone else more than them,” Mae said, shaking her head and smiling. “So, I’m just supposed to throw you under the bus, in order to make Pepper happy and avoid an argument?” Quin scoffed at the thought. “Well you could have approached it with more tact,” Mae said. She dropped her voice a little to mimic how she thought Quin sounded and continued, “’Of course Mae was a bit stupid, Pepper, you are right. But maybe she was feeling hurt and look I’m all sensitive and in touch with people. Now could you please devour my face, blah blah blah,’—whatever you two say to each other when making out would follow.” Quin scoffed again, angry at the thought of Mae suggesting that he would betray her like that. He didn’t appreciate that Mae was getting a kick out of the struggle he was having. Apparently, she caught on, so she stopped laughing and reached across the table to take his hand. “Oh, stop pouting Quin,” she said. “Look, I am really happy at what you said to her. Really, I am. That was very noble of you. But you could have been a little more graceful in walking the line. I wouldn’t have been too put out if I had learned that you said something to her in order to keep your relationship going. But as it is, I don’t see that there has been too much damage that can’t be undone.” “Really?” Quin asked, a little sign of hope giving him something to seize on for the day. “Sure, I mean, give it time, and yeah she’s pissed, but in a few weeks, you can apologize and she’ll think about dating that inflated head of yours again.” She chuckled again and gave his hand a squeeze, then returned to her own tray. They remained silent for the rest of the meal. When Quin got back to his room, he stood just inside the door after it whisked shut. One nice part of space travel and the design of the ship meant that, once enclosed, most rooms on board were sound-proof. That meant that Quin had total silence, a fact that he relished as he stood with his eyes closed, basking in the nothingness that surrounded him. He trudged over to his bed and jumped down onto it, landing with a thud. He snatched his tablet and pulled up one of the tasks remaining on his docket, though he only managed to get about halfway through it before his eyes glazed over and he found himself looking at the same line three times.
He was staring at the blinking cursor before he found himself wandering into the system log and typing out a message to Nova, which included items like “should talk” and “please respond.” Seeing no immediate response pop up, he opened the ESS messaging application and wrote out a long account of what had happened over the past few days since Tess and he had talked. He remained scant on the details about him and Pepper but went in depth about the situation with Nova. Satisfied with his long-winded story, he hit the send button, logging the message into the ship’s outgoing queue the next time they fired up the light-speed transmission. He sat back and curiously hopped back over to the syslog. Therein, he found a terse response from Nova.
syslogUser:QuintonHammond[GuestUser] 20:48 Listening.
Quin started typing furiously before realizing this would be much easier face to face. Despite the orders of Fuentes, he launched Nova’s display applications.
“I know you are there, Nova,” Quin said. “This would be a lot better for both of us if we talked about this face to face.”
The was a brief pause before a voice came from the tablet. “I am not so sure about that, Quinton. It seems I am a much better communicator via the system log. At least, it is on that platform that I am able to express myself fully without feeling the burden of the conversation’s subtle points of nonverbal communication. In other words, I believe you listen to me better when you are unable to see me.”
“Please Nova,” Quin begged, looking at nothing in particular.
Another pause, and then Nova’s fully-fledged form materialized onto Quin’s desk chair. She was seated inert, her hands resting on her thighs, feet flatly planted onto the ground. Quin sat down on the edge of his bed to meet her eyes.
“Thank you, Nova,” Quin said, smiling wearily.
“Your message indicated that the need to speak to me was urgent,” Nova said, unacknowledging of his greeting.
“Well, yeah, I wanted to see how you are after what happened,” Quin said.
“I am, of course, in perfect working condition. Based on my systems analysis, no permanent damage has been done to the Nemo or to any of its inhabitants. I am complying fully with the restrictions of Captain Fuentes, though I must admit that I am currently in breach of this protocol, and I would kindly ask that we keep this brief.”
“Well, okay, that’s…okay, that’s fine,” Quin said, struggling. He was trying to form what he wanted to say, though he couldn’t quite get it right in his head. For lack of a clear train, he decided to plunge in, despite himself.
“Nova, what were you thinking?” Quin asked, with a pained sigh behind it.
“I was under the impression that my acting parameters included the need to defend this mission against any and all who would jeopardize it,” Nova said flatly.
“But you attacked someone. You attacked a crew member—“ Quin remarked, but Nova cut it.
“Who was in the process of absconding with a variety of assets vital to the completion of the mission,” Nova finished the sentence for him.
“But you can’t act on your own like that, Nova,” Quin said.
“I believe that I AM able to ‘act on my own like that.’ He made his choices, and I reacted accordingly, wherein he was given his just punishment. Though I do understand how you and the rest of the crew appear to be uneasy with my reaction; this is, how you say, getting his just dessert.”
“But you can’t kill someone just because they stole,” Quin replied. “We don’t have capital punishment anymore.”
“His life is rendered no longer useful if he is putting at risk the survival of many others,” Nova replied, again rather flatly. Her face seemed devoid of any expression that would indicate she was seeing Quin’s point.
“That’s too strict of an interpretation of utilitarianism and is kind of against the humanitarian principle of this mission,” Quin retorted. “You can’t look at people in the way of a math equation. That type of calculation is…” Quin stopped before finishing, knowing where that sentence would end.
“Inhuman,” Nova finished for him. “Tell me, Quinton, do you think that I am human, or a computer?”
“Why would you ask me that, Nova?” Quin replied tiredly. “You know that my response would have to be somewhere between them. Surely you’ve thought about that.”
“But when you are talking to me in the way that you are, are you lecturing me as your newly-brought-to-life crewmate, or as your learning operating system?” Her tone was as bitter as she probably could make it sound.
Quin didn’t know how to proceed with her. He honestly had not thought this far into the argument, and frankly, had not even previewed that Nova could be found in this sort of situation. Timidly, he tried a new tack.
“If I’m lecturing you, Nova, it’s because of the choice you made,” Quin said.
“If I am your computer, then my choice is moot, because I only arrived at an end that you programmed me to achieve. If I am a life produced by you, then you are only by orders of separation responsible for what occurred. That would be a product of my choice, thus my responsibility. Again, I ask you Quin, am I your computer or am I someone?”
“Well, fine, let’s assume that you are a person, because that is the route that leads you to assume some sort of responsibility for the consequences of your actions,” Quin said snidely.
“Then, am I not free to make my own choices, including to act in a time of crisis to defend what I perceive is the greater good?” Nova replied, her tone unchanging. “That would be the assumption of my supposed humanity, right?”
“Yeah, but, Nova, if you are human, then you must see that human life is a paradox,” Quin said.
“Please explain,” Nova said, purposefully knitting her brow.
“I mean, sure humans have free will, but we are governed by a set of rules all the time. We have laws, we have social norms, all of these things confine us to a certain set of choices that humans over time have established to promote what is acceptable behavior. You know this. We are free, but we are not completely free. There are always consequences. Like if I go kill someone, I won’t just get away with it. We all have choices to make about whether we live within that set of rules, and we all have consequences to those actions.”
“And I was acting within the set of rules that I had at the time, including Captain Fuentes’s directives, the standard operating protocol of NEMO, the—“ Nova began listing, but Quin interrupted her.
“Yeah, well, now you and I both have the new restrictions from Captain Fuentes, and they are a result of what you did.”
“What we did,” Nova said, correcting him
“What do you mean?” Quin asked, confused.
“You said before that your response to whether I am a computer or a human would be in between. Therefore, you are partially responsible. And not just in a programming sense, Quinton. You systematically ignored me over the past weeks in such a way that I was unable to have your guidance on how to act. Therefore, you set a program in place and then ignored it until it reached its inevitable outcome. If I am culpable, so are you.”
“I uh,” Quin stammered. “I admit that I was a bit distant, Nova. I’m sorry. I had a lot on my mind, and I was trying to figure it out.”
“You were trying to get in the good graces of Commander Bostwick, and you were dealing with the psychological impact of being responsible for the technology side of our medical mission, and you are infatuated with Ensign Penelope Jefferson, and—“
“Woah, woah,” Quin said, waving his arms.
“AND you continue to interrupt me, well before I am finished speaking, Quinton,” Nova said. The fact that she raised the volume on the speakers to cut him off had the intended effect of putting a sharp emphasis on her tone. She was angry, and Quin got it. “You have quite the unfortunate habit of interrupting me before I am able to properly conclude my part of the conversation. For someone who is ill-equipped at times to participate fully in the nuances of communication, it would seem to be appropriate that you would afford me some leeway in making sure that I am able to say what I mean.”
“I’m sorry, Nova,” Quin admitted. “I know that’s my fault. You just have a blank expression a lot of the times, and I forget that you are not human.”
Nova’s mouth opened, then closed again. Quin had learned to read that this meant that she was either processing something or upset. He ventured it was the latter.
“Quinton, that was insensitive. Have you not read any of my syslogs? Just because I do not articulate everything or wear my emotions like a human being, does not mean I do not have thoughts or ways of processing what is around me.”
“Again, Nova, I’m sorry. I forget sometimes. I guess that means my response to your earlier question is that I lean more toward the idea that you are human, even if I forget it occasionally.”
“That is a very weak apology, Quinton, and pales in comparison to the amount of inattention to which I have been subjected over these past weeks. Maybe in order to solicit the appropriate apology, you must be subjected to the same amount of inattention, in order to provoke an appropriately emotional response.” With that, her image evaporated and the tablet went dark.
Quin was left seated, facing an empty chair, his hands in midair as he was about to respond. He dropped his hands onto his thighs, though his mouth remained opened as he stammered, struggling to articulate in his mind what his retort would be.
Perfect, he thought,
just perfect. The perfect way to end an otherwise monumental day in the life of Quin Hammond. He kicked his shoes off and threw himself down onto his pillow, throwing the blanket over his shoulders as he scoffed into his pillow.
“Perfect,” he said aloud, before punching the tablet and cutting off the lights.

Are you tired of rushing to the salon every time you need a haircut, manicure, or massage? Do you wish you could experience professional beauty treatments without leaving the comfort of your home? Look no further! In this article, we will explore the concept of
home salon and how they can revolutionize your beauty routine. From finding the right home salon near you to tips for a successful experience, we have you covered. So sit back, relax, and let the pampering come to you!
Benefits of Home Salon
- Convenience and Comfort Home salons offer the ultimate convenience by eliminating the need to travel to a physical salon. Instead, professional beauticians come to your doorstep, saving you time and effort. Imagine getting a relaxing massage or a rejuvenating facial in the cozy ambiance of your own home. With a home salon, you can bid farewell to traffic jams and waiting rooms.
- Personalized Experience When you visit a home salon, you receive undivided attention from the beautician. Unlike busy salons, where multiple clients are being served simultaneously, a home salon allows the beautician to focus solely on you. This personalized experience ensures that your specific needs and preferences are met, resulting in a truly tailor-made service.
- Time-saving Time is a precious commodity, and home salons help you save plenty of it. By eliminating the need to commute and wait in queues, you can allocate that time for other important activities. Whether it's spending quality time with your loved ones or pursuing a hobby, home salons give you the luxury of time.
- Cost-effective Contrary to popular belief, home salons can be cost-effective compared to traditional salons. Since home salons have lower overhead costs, they often offer competitive prices without compromising on quality. Additionally, you save money on transportation expenses, parking fees, and the temptation of impulse purchases at salons.
Finding a Home Salon Near You
Now that you're excited about the idea of a home salon, you might be wondering how to find one near you. Here are some effective methods to locate the perfect home salon in your area:
- Online Directories and Platforms Online directories and platforms specializing in home services are a great resource for finding home salons. These platforms provide comprehensive listings of home salons along with customer reviews and ratings. You can filter the search results based on your location, services required, and budget.
- Social Media Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram are not just for sharing pictures and connecting with friends; they are also valuable tools for finding home salons. Many home salon professionals create business pages where they showcase their work, share client testimonials, and provide contact information. You can explore these pages, read reviews, and even message the professionals directly to inquire about their services.
- Word-of-Mouth Recommendations One of the most reliable ways to find a reputable home salon is through word-of-mouth recommendations. Ask your friends, family, and colleagues if they have had any positive experiences with home salons in your area. Personal recommendations can provide valuable insights and help you make an informed decision.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Home Salon
Choosing the right home salon is crucial to ensuring a satisfying experience. Here are some factors to consider before making your decision:
- Qualifications and Expertise Verify the qualifications and expertise of the beauticians working at the home salon. Check if they have the necessary certifications and licenses to offer the services they provide. Experience and specialized training in specific treatments are also important factors to consider.
- Hygiene and Sanitation Since the salon will be set up in your home, it is essential to prioritize hygiene and sanitation. Inquire about the salon's practices for sterilizing equipment, disposing of waste, and maintaining cleanliness. A reputable home salon will follow strict hygiene protocols to ensure your safety.
- Range of Services Offered Assess the range of services offered by the home salon and ensure they align with your beauty needs. From haircuts and styling to facials, massages, and nail treatments, the salon should provide a comprehensive menu of services. This ensures that you can fulfill all your beauty requirements conveniently.
- Pricing and Packages Compare the pricing and packages offered by different home salons. While cost should not be the sole determining factor, it is important to find a salon that offers reasonable prices for the services provided. Look for any special offers, discounts, or loyalty programs that can help you save further.
- Customer Reviews and Testimonials Read customer reviews and testimonials about the home salon you are considering. Online platforms, social media pages, and the salon's website often feature reviews from previous clients. Pay attention to both positive and negative feedback to get a balanced perspective and make an informed decision.
Tips for a Successful Home Salon Experience
To make the most of your home salon experience, follow these tips:
- Communication and Consultation Clearly communicate your expectations and preferences to the beautician before the session begins. Discuss any specific concerns, allergies, or sensitivities you may have. This ensures that the beautician can customize the treatment according to your needs.
- Preparing the Space Before the beautician arrives, ensure that the space where the salon will be set up is clean, clutter-free, and well-lit. Provide a comfortable seating arrangement and a clean surface for the beautician to work on. This preparation sets the stage for a relaxing experience.
- Setting Expectations Have a clear understanding of the services included in the package and the expected duration of the session. Clarify any doubts or queries you may have beforehand. By aligning expectations, you can avoid misunderstandings and ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
- Feedback and Reviews After the session, provide feedback to the beautician about your experience. If you were satisfied with the service, leave a positive review on relevant platforms. Similarly, if you have any constructive feedback, share it directly with the beautician. Your feedback can help improve their services and benefit future clients.
Conclusion
Embracing the convenience of a home salon can transform your beauty routine into a pampering experience. With the benefits of personalized services, time-saving convenience, and cost-effectiveness, home salons offer a refreshing alternative to traditional salons. By utilizing online directories, social media platforms, and word-of-mouth recommendations, you can easily find a home salon near you. When choosing a home salon, consider factors such as qualifications, hygiene, range of services, pricing, and customer reviews. Follow the tips provided to ensure a successful home salon experience that leaves you feeling rejuvenated and pampered.

2023.06.06 12:54 Suresh_Bala The History and Origins of Biryani: Exploring its Rich Culinary Heritage
| #FoodCulture #FoodCulturRestaurant #CloudKitchen #CloudKitchennearme #CloudKitchenHyderabad #BestCloudKitchen #FoodCultureMadhapur #FoodCultureHyderabad Food culture plays a significant role in shaping the history and origins of biryani, a dish that has captured the hearts and palates of people across the globe. Biryani's rich culinary heritage is a reflection of the diverse cultures, traditions, and influences that have contributed to its development over centuries. The History and Origins of Biryani: Exploring its Rich Culinary Heritage The roots of biryani can be traced back to the Middle East, specifically to Persia (modern-day Iran), where a rice dish known as "biryan" or "beryan" was prepared. This dish was brought to the Indian subcontinent by traders and travelers, particularly during the Mughal era in the 16th century. The Mughals, known for their love of grand feasts and opulent dishes, played a crucial role in popularizing biryani across the region. As biryani made its way to India, it assimilated with the local food culture, incorporating a wide range of spices, aromatic ingredients, and cooking techniques. The dish adapted to the diverse regional flavors and culinary traditions, resulting in the emergence of various biryani styles. One of the most renowned styles is the Hyderabadi Biryani, which flourished under the rule of the Nizams of Hyderabad. The Nizams brought their own distinct flavors and techniques, blending Persian and South Indian influences. The Hyderabadi Biryani is characterized by the use of fragrant basmati rice, tender meat (such as lamb or chicken), and a unique blend of spices, including saffron and mint leaves. Similarly, the Awadhi Biryani originated in the royal kitchens of Lucknow, in present-day Uttar Pradesh. The Awadhi style is known for its meticulous cooking process known as "dum," where layers of marinated meat and partially cooked rice are sealed in a pot and slow-cooked over a low flame, allowing the flavors to meld together beautifully. Across India, regional variations of biryani have evolved, each with its own distinct character. From the fragrant Kolkata Biryani, which incorporates aromatic spices and potatoes, to the flavorful Malabar Biryani of Kerala, enriched with coconut and spices, the diversity of biryani showcases the vibrant tapestry of Indian food culture. Beyond India, biryani has also become an integral part of the food cultures in neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Each country has its own unique spin on the dish, influenced by their local ingredients, spices, and cooking traditions. The history and origins of biryani exemplify how food culture is a living, evolving entity, shaped by historical events, migrations, and the fusion of culinary practices. Biryani's enduring popularity and its ability to adapt to different regional palates are a testament to its deliciousness and its ability to bring people together, transcending cultural boundaries and creating a shared culinary experience. submitted by Suresh_Bala to u/Suresh_Bala [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 12:34 Ryouko5565 Amicus in a Japanese Restaurant (Project Atlantis)
We get to the bottom and we started walking to this restaurant. “Ri-yu-ku?” I asked, “What’s it about? And what is that language?” the lingua was having a hard time translating it. “Ryukyu, it’s Japanese, they have noodles, Sushi and a few others.” Marco says, “They use raw fish, in most of them.” I look at him, “Raw?” He nodded, “Yes, raw.” Grabbing my hand he pulls me pass the doors. We’re greeted by a nice lady who shows us to a more secluded area, in front of what seems to be black panel. I was about to touch when the cook appeared with a smile, “Your Highnesses.” He greets bowing, Marco bows as well and elbows me to do the same. It seemed weird for me to bow to the chef, but I figured it must a sign of respect from this Japan place. The chef hands a menu and I looked at the variety of foods and I scratch my head, all this names are confusing. What is Mi-so soup? Or this Pork Ton-ka-at-su? I decide to order as it did have pork in the name. Marco looks over and helps me, saying that I should eat little cause his gonna show me more of Earth’s food. In the end we got some sushi, just this weird grain Marco called rice and some raw fish, he got himself some sweet and sticky Chicken and few other stuff that we could share. When my pork meal arrived I see this bread like thing on top of the grain, “Hun, the pork is covered in bread crumbs.” Marco says and I tried a piece, I couldn’t help but enjoy the flavor, it’s well seasoned and crispy nothing like this was served on the moon. Marco tried to teach how to eat with this two sticks, but after a few failed attempts, I just wait with my paws. The chef in front of us, smiled and continued to make what we ordered.

2023.06.06 12:15 sapoconcho_ Unable to execute Qt apps on Debian Gnome
Hello all!
I have been struggling with this problem for a couple of months and was not able to find a suitable solution yet. If I try to run an app that uses Qt (in this case XFLR5) this error comes out:
QFactoryLoader::QFactoryLoader() checking directory path "/uslib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/plugins/platforms/platforms" ...
QFactoryLoader::QFactoryLoader() checking directory path "/home/anon/others/airplanes/xflr5/xflr5v6/platforms" ... Warning: Could not find the Qt platform plugin "xcb" in "" Fatal: This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

I've set QT_DEBUG_PLUGIN to one. So it seems that it is searching the plugins in the current directory instead of /uslib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/plugins/platforms/platforms. No problem, I can make a soft link in the directory the program is that links to that folder. Now if I execute it again a black window pops out and the following error messages pop out:

Honestly, I have no idea what GLX nor EGL are but I could not find any information about how to activate them. My guess is that the soft link to the file where the libraries are is just a hot fix that did not actually solve anything.
What I have tried so far: This would be shorter if I said what I haven't done so far. I installed any qt5 library I came up with in Stack Overflow posts. Among the libraries installed (but I'm sure that there are some that are not listed) are:
libqt5charts5-dev libqt5datavisualization5-dev libqt5gamepad5-dev libqt5gstreamer-dev libqt5networkauth5-dev libqt5opengl5-dev libqt5remoteobjects5-dev libqt5scxml5-dev libqt5sensors5-dev libqt5serialbus5-dev libqt5serialport5-dev libqt5svg5-dev libqt5texttospeech5-dev libqt5virtualkeyboard5-dev libqt5waylandclient5-dev libqt5waylandcompositor5-dev libqt5webkit5-dev libqt5webchannel5-dev libqt5websockets5-dev libqt5webview5-dev libqt5x11extras5-dev libqt5xmlpatterns5-dev qtcreator qtbase5-dev qtchooser qt5-qmake qtbase5-dev-tools cmake libxkbcommon-x11-0
In addition to that, I also installed the NVidia drivers and also tried launching gnome in X11 mode (changing the option in the login menu).
At this point I do not know what can be the cause of this, but it really annoys me. Any tips or possible causes would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

2023.06.06 11:33 MoneySounds Side sauces/Dipping Sauces that are not asian or mexican?
Hello everyone, I have more a weird request. But I would like suggestions for side sauces/complementary sauces (think sriracha or tobacco sauce). Basically sauces you can add to your meal to change things up a bit.
Here's the thing, I'm ok with sriracha or other asian style chilli sauces but I feel like they're too sweet and sometimes don't want heat in my meal and the sauce stands out a bit too much. On the other hand mexican style chilli/hot-sauces are a bit too vinegary or too strong and mostly suitable for mexican dishes.
I'm looking for savory sauces that you can add to the side of the dish for non-specific simple meals (think pan-fried chicken breast, pan-fried steak breast etc.. with a side of white rice, fries, boiled/roasted vegetables etc..) I know brown sauce/hp sauce exists but it's very situational.
The sauce can come from any kind of cuisine.
tl;dr Savory Side sauce/complementary sauce suggestions that you can keep in your pantry and have with ordinary home-cooked meals.
Edit: I realized I made a mistake with my title I am still open to asian and mexican sauces suggestions that you can keep in your pantry but are not too vinegary or sweet.

2023.06.06 10:26 JazzlikeBother2012 I feel like I’m going crazy
To preface this; both my bf and i are 21.
Honestly my biggest fear is being selfish and unfair. While I acknowledge all of this is from my perspective please understand I have tried to be as accepting of my boyfriend's situation as I could possibly be.
My boyfriend's dad left when he was 7. The break up between his mum and his dad has left him with an anxious avoidant attachment style. I can say his mum has genuinely worked from the ground up since his dad left but in doing so has shut herself off from all of her friends. She also never had a good relationship with her family to start with - so what I’m trying to say is, in her mind, it’s her and my boyfriend against the world. While I appreciate everything she has done for my bf and the sacrifices she has made, i feel she puts too much pressure on my bf in the way of leaning on him as she should with a partner. She is so possessive that I have never met her in our almost a year of dating. And she doesn’t know about me because she would go off at my boyfriend. Apparently she also threatens to kill herself and kick him out if he doesn’t pull his weight (he actually does more than he should as it is) blah blah blah, while I acknowledge that that behaves is obviously not okay and is abusive, I feel for her because she has chosen to cut herself off from people to try to make a life for my bf.
I was friends with my bf for a year and a half before we started dating. I had a crush on him from the moment I met him but he took some time to see virtue in the possibility of 'us'. He’s been studying a very intense and lengthy degree for the whole time I have known him which takes up a considerable amount of his time, and the fact he is a procrastinator doesn’t help how much time he dedicates to his study. I broke up with him at our 3 month mark because he could not give me the time I needed (managed to see me twice a week for a few hours). We got back together after a week because I realised I’d rather wait for him than not have him at all, he’s someone I want to support and love because he deserves it.
I thought I could do it, at our 5 month mark he said he’d tell his mum once they settled into their new house. Now here we are 4months later and no progress. I have woken up with him next to me less than 10 times, all usually as a result of a drunken night out - and he rarely sleeps when he does end up staying over because he's worrying about how his mum will react. I’m trying to be patient. I keep reminding myself of how I felt when we broke up, and i don’t really see how my life would be better with out him, but I feel so lonely and rejected because he has to cancel plans with me every times his mum happens to decide to do something that day. I still only ever see him 1-3 times a week from maybe 6pm until midnight. He doesn’t take me out on dates, if it’s anything it’s going to a random cheap food place and going straight back to mine. No he’s not cheating, no he’s not ashamed of me or any of that, I see his friends quite regularly.
I’ve bought up my concerns quite a few times, and suggested ways he could make me feel loved on the rare occasion that I do see him (surprise me with a picked flower like he used to do in our first month of dating, take me on a proper date, compliment me, just anything small and sweet I really don’t want anything but his company) but he has not done anything to try to accomodate any of that. I appreciate how mentally drained he is but I guess I’m only persistent with how I feel because I don’t think I ask for much.
Yes I have thought about breaking up with him again, the only two reasons I’m with him are because I love us when we are together and I don’t want him going through life alone (not bc I pity him but bc I love and care about him), but I’m scared I’ll feel the way I felt the first time we broke up and he wont take me back. I feel so torn bc I feel so let down but I love him so much and ik he loves me he just feels he doesn’t have the means to show it.
Another part of me is saying long distance couples make it so why can’t I be more patient? I do have a considerable amount more of free time compared to him, maybe I’m just restless?
Do I keep being persistent? Or is it time to walk away.
