2023.03.26 21:37 efh1 Follow up research on current state of vacuum balloon technology being developed by DOE with LANL
I've covered this topic before when speculating how observations such as the cube in a sphere UAP or even the balloon like UAP apparently observed during the shoot downs could potentially be advanced forms of vacuum balloon technology. I had found a
2018 patent from LANL under contract with the DOE to develop such technology using alleged breakthroughs in aerogel technology.
I have discovered that
LANL openly discusses developing this technology now on their website. Below you can see the they clearly state they intend to demonstrate and commercialize this disruptive technology. See the bolded portion of the text from their website below.
SUMMARY
An air-buoyant vacuum vessel (aka a vacuum balloon) would float in air by the same principles as a helium weather balloon or blimp, but be filled with "nothing" (i.e. vacuum) instead of helium. In order to achieve buoyancy in air, a solid hollow structure would need to be made from material strong enough to withstand the crushing force of atmospheric pressure, while light weight enough to float when vacuum is applied to the interior void space.
MARKET
The technology has the potential to disrupt the aerostat and weather balloon industry by reducing reliance on helium, extending operating durations, and increasing reliability. Agriculture (i.e. crop monitoring), defense (i.e. surveillance), and internet access industries could benefit from applications of this technology.
BENEFITS
The technology has the potential to: • decrease the cost and facilitate the targeted treatment of crops, • increased surveillance and decreased need for field agents, and • providing internet access to remote locations.
"Nothing" (i.e. vacuum) is less expensive that helium. "Nothing" (i.e. vacuum) is more abundant than helium. "Nothing" (i.e. vacuum) is lighter weight than helium. "Nothing" (i.e. vacuum) in easier to transport than compressed gas cylinders of helium.

WHY WE ARE BUILDING AIR BUOYANT VESSEL This technology is a solution to the ever increasing cost and decreasing availability of helium gas, and the impact this is having on private,
academic, industrial, and government ballooning applications.
WHAT'S BEHIND OUR TECHNOLOGY This technology is much safer to using hydrogen in place of helium in aerostat and weather ballooning applications due to the flamability
and chemical volatility of hydrogen.
OUR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES The increasing cost and decreasing availability of helium gas is driving the competitive interest and attractiveness of this technology.
OUR TECHNOLOGY STATUS
Current project funding is driving the development of ultra-strong, ultra-light-weight materials with the end goal of the project being the production of an air-buoyant vacuum vessel prototype constructed from these materials. Once air-buoyancy of the vacuum vessel is demonstrated, steps will be taken to commercialize the technology.
PUBLICATIONS AND IP S133529.001, “Air-Buoyant Structures in Vehicles”, U.S. Patent Application No. 15/997,163, Application Date: 06/04/2018.
From a
government website I was able to find the contract number
AC52-06NA25396. It's a $36B contract that looks to be a kind of general contract that this technology development must fall under.
Most importantly I discovered a
paper published in 2022 in the Journal of Material Science by the same group of people with more details on the subject. Only the abstract is available for free at the moment, but the full paper becomes available for free at the end of July of 2023. The abstract is below.
Air impermeability has been observed in low-density aerogel and cryogel materials, which has led to a series of experiments to investigate the feasibility of an air buoyant vacuum vessel, as well as the fabrication and testing of sub-buoyant prototypes. Here, bulk samples of silica aerogel were shown to isolate vacuum from ambient air for several hours with optimal vacuum isolation occurring at a density of approximately 85 mg cm–3. It was demonstrated using polyimide aerogel and cryogel materials that the ability of these foam materials to provide an air impermeable layer between vacuum and atmosphere, in spite of being comprised of mostly void space, is related to material stiffness. It is hypothesized that this behavior is due to local deformation of the random nanostructure of the material. Spherical shell vacuum vessels were produced using the polyimide cryogel, and less than 133 Pa vacuum containment was demonstrated under active pumping. In order to approach the non-buoyant to buoyant transition for these vacuum vessels, a polyimide composite was produced using helical fibers for which preliminary mechanical testing was performed.
More information about this most recent article reveals that
Aerogel Technologies Inc. has partnered with NASA to commercialize polyimide aerogels that are not brittle like silica aerogels and have an extreme combination of strength and lightweightness. They
demonstrate that it can be hit with a hammer with only very little deforming effect and no breaking.
The recent paper has about 13 authors and lists about another 13 individuals in the acknowledgements. You can easily verify these individuals are long time researchers at NASA and LANL. The patent very clearly covers commercialization of vacuum balloon technology using aerogels just as the paper covers. Also, the LANL website very clearly says they intend to demonstrate and commercialize this. If you look at the LinkedIn profiles of the people associated with the paper they have the required expertise to understand and attempt this. When I put this idea forward many people wrote it off as impossible or just another useless patent that means nothing. They argued with me about the physics behind it or the it's actual practical applications. The theory is sound and they are experimentally demonstrating the feasibility of the materials to engineer this technology. Once they verify the results experimentally they simply need to scale to a larger design to demonstrate buoyancy.
The paper has a
different contract number that also has about $30B in funding with a projected end date of 2028. Notice that this contract also started in 2018 which is the same year of the aerogel vacuum balloon patent.

2023.03.26 21:32 Sethuel Kings Playoff Odds Update 3/26
Sorry I'm a little slower today than usual--we decided to head up to the farmers' market at Arden Fair. First artichokes of the season! First spring onions of the season! Morels for $25/pound! What a day! Capped off by breakfast sandwiches at Ginger Elizabeth's in midtown, I must say I'm feeling full and happy.
The other part of the delay is I've been doing some fun math. As far I can tell, In order for the Kings to miss the playoffs, this is what would need to happen:

April 11, 2023 | Kings lose Play-In at home vs 8 seed |
April 14, 2023 | Kings lose Play-In at home vs 9/10 Winner |
If literally any of those 35 games (33 regular season and 2 play-in) go a different way, the Kings will be in the playoffs. So if you're trying to imagine all the ways the Kings can still blow this, I have good news. This exact schedule is literally the only way the Kings can still blow this. If you're wondering how many possible ways there are for 35 basketball games to go, the answer is 2^35, which is 34,359,738,368. Of those thirty-four billion possible combinations of outcomes for these 35 games, there is exactly one combination that will result in the Kings missing the playoffs.
It's a bummer the Sixers didn't cooperate last night, it would have been quite a party. But we'll have to party today or tomorrow or whenever it happens. Suzy and I went to the game last night with our friend Karuna. Not the most well-executed game I've ever seen, but good enough to get the W. It's really nice to see Huerter going nuts again. One additional fun thing is that as we were walking in there was a crew making a little webisode for the NBA app about De'Aaron Fox. My body type is best described as "non-threatening" so I'm usually the guy who gets stopped by strangers on the street when they need directions or whatever. I guess that extends to giving quotes for a Foxy video. Anyway, keep an eye out for a forthcoming "Pass the Rock" video about De'Aaron Fox, and my face possibly filling up your phone.
Hey look I'm on TV! Anyway, wins the last two days have actually given our chance at the 2 seed another boost--we're back up to about 40%. The Grizzlies still have some easy games, but the Houston series is behind them, and they still have two against a Clippers team that has a lot to fight for.
We're also now back to 50 wins looking very realistic. In fact, the 538 ELO model (on which this is all based) says we have about a 60% chance at winning 50+.
There's some new movement in the first-round opponent matchups too, as the Wolves are now the second most likely opponent. I saw a post this morning about how their size and length aren't the best match-up for the Kings, which is true, but honestly every one of these teams brings a lot to the table. The playoffs won't be easy. But they'll be here and at least for now that's the most exciting part.
I decided to scratch the Clinch date table because the way the code was set up, it thinks we've already clinched a playoff spot. I mean for all intents and purposes we have, but also that 1 in 34 billion chance is still larger than zero. The division is still basically a done deal even if it's technically still possible to blow it. My code simulates the rest of the season 10,000 times, and we lose the division in 14 of those.
Anyway, I guess let's go Warriors tonight so we can clinch in our building tomorrow?

2023.03.26 21:28 GmoLargey It's been months since I've used my oculus headsets, which is worrying with quest 3 coming up - I've bought every oculus since dk2 on preorder, I likely won't be bothering with quest 3.
For context, I currently still have here 2 x cv1 headsets, an oculus go, quest 2 with both the 'praised' bobo M2 plus headstrap and the kiwi headstrap non battery, VR cover faceplate.
I never did and still don't use my quest 2 on PC, I just can't deal with compression and disjointed feeling being in the game worlds compared to cv1.
Honestly, the only reason I have my quest 2 is because I also didn't use my quest 1 as much as I wanted to because of its weight and 72hz, but I of course loved the sideloading and oled and bought a load of quest games. so the apparently lighter quest 2 and 90hz was a 'see ya later' to quest 1 and crossing my fingers 90hz link would improve things for my pc use to replace cv1.
Sadly it didn't, and as such, was stung with the 'lol no go library for you' aswell and the sideloading being the same ball ache procedure with half the stuff not passing through external inputs and no dedicated environment like oculus TV for viewing with (until years later) unable to change the screen size correctly. basically worse than the oculus go for sideloading, which is why it was kept.
the weight also let me down, going down the rabbit hole of many headstraps yet again and still not finding something I want to wear for hours- again it's slightly unfair as it's up against a cv1 which just fits me like a glove.
So, apart from the occasional exclusive quest game, quest 2 really doesn't get used and every time I turn it on I now actually sigh, it's just a bloated mess.
We all know what online games are like with this headset, I had a squeaker say the other night ''why do you sound like a man bRO'' and that was that, stopped playing as it's weird and it's awful.
Enter the Pico headsets, first with the neo 3 link which is essentially a much lighter quest 2 with better Fresnel lenses and a display port for pcvr, that despite its messy start and still underlying problems needing to be fixed, has become an actual 2 in one headset for me and I use it more standalone than I ever did on quest 2 in the years I've owned it, I also have the Pico 4, but with the software being pretty much the same, it's basically identical with slightly less user functionality (no aux, no DP, glare on lenses, no buttons on headset for use with just Xbox controller)
So my recent push to turn my quest 2 back on after spending the last few months using my picos, I am still absolutely baffled how meta are so anti-user focused and was surprised to see janky avatar arms that would stretch when controllers were placed on my desk and decide to disappear and reappear depending on how long I kept my hands still for, what a mess.
My take aways from the return:
Quest 2 lenses are just bad by comparison to both the picos and in edge to edge clarity, worse than even cv1 so it feels incredibly restricted, its hard to go back. made worse when you don't have the things up against your eyeballs when using the bobo strap, which of course being halo just wobbles around in movement and causes you to go outside those tiny sweetspots.
Going back to kiwi strap, after an hour I'm tired, it's just too much weight up front and I just find I don't want to use the quest 2, I still haven't completed re4vr despite buying it on release because of this.
'Advanced' user stuff. 1. Sideloading is just a joke compared to drag and drop on picos, infact I don't need a pc at all.
- Sideloaded windows while cool you can have multiple, I can't distance them away from me, making it horrible with the outer edge blur of the lenses.
- If I want to watch a movie, I still can't distance the screen from me and to play half my files and not be deafened by audio corruption, I have to play it in skybox which is a paid app just to do basic media functionality and it's still awful with those lenses as you have blur in the corners of your screen.
- Just getting screenshots and videos off the headset- what the actual hell, completely useless companion app that even requests Bluetooth for some pointless reason, even more useless sharing feature on headset, seriously meta, I need to email or upload to sites to get my media off headset??? With Pico its 2 clicks in the companion app, no Bluetooth, no stress.
5: when configured to long pressing the oculus button (to stop it opening up overlay accidentally in BS) it's ridiculous the recenter button isn't on the first group of things you see.
6: starting and stopping video recordings is a joke, it's 2023, take a page out of picos book and add a button shortcut to start and stop recordings or screenshots, not deal with the overlay and later having to edit to cut that out.
7: bloat, absolute bloat everywhere, I'm tech savvy but it's so unnecessary getting to things you need either in menus or while gaming.
8: oculus avatars actually causing a problem for cross play games, I was on wander in Pico last night and joined a group who were all oculus, they could see my avatar from my pico but I could not see any of theirs, wander uses ready player me avatars but I guess that's not allowed with meta and have to stick to their own.
9: store is still the locked down crap it was when I left it several months ago and talk going forward isn't about pushing the chips harder (red matter 2 on both picos looks and plays way better than oculus) but meta says the way forward is app render space warp, absolute nope from me, that's sacrificing the end experience if it's still subject to motion artifacting and especially if they do that at 72hz.
10: casting is just awful latency compared to picos and once again, unnecessarily complicated, mixed reality just doesn't exist without complicated setup where it does on picos using just my phone even with a hotspot direct from phone to headset (an old pixel 3a phone, nothing special)
11: apps populating the standard gallery with their thumbnails causing it to basically never load, I just want to view my own 360 photos, not have to scroll through every single thumbnail of a beat saber song, there's no proper directory or filtering I could see basically forcing me back to a pc to add a .nomedia file to the folders to fix it
Quest 3 is likely carrying on this tradition of adding even more crap and not sorting the user experience.
The grass isn't exactly always greener with picos, but dear god just having a common sense approach to things has been so honestly refreshing.
If I want to play a Drbeef game he just shared apk for, I copy link on my phone, click companion app, send link direct to Pico headset, put headset on and click download and install, job done
Getting same apk on quest is just a nightmare and yea the sidequest app can be put on (through a pc) but that's obviously out of date and doesn't launch on my quest 2, requiring me to go through the steps of just getting sidequest running again before I even start.
Just so unnecessary, it's android, these basic things have not been improved years after release and infact it's been made even worse, so quest 3, unless it has a damn display port which I highly doubt, would be the second oculus/meta headset I won't be buying, the quest pro is basically a fancy pair of lenses on a quest 2 and doesn't interest me in the slightest, nothing else is changed for bettering my personal use cases with that either as none of the above has changed.
I know I'll get shit and downvoted but to me it's ''oh how the mighty have fallen''
The cv1 will always remain in my collection, quest 2 is just here, go I no longer need because the picos cover it's use case, just seems it's become so stagnated and uninteresting, laughably depressing seeing ''best update ever'' videos on YouTube about some basic feature that should have been present 3 years ago, Xbox cloud gaming? That's cute.
I don't know where meta go from here, sideloading alone shouldn't be a taboo and would likely retain the users, no good trying to aim for some next level all in one computing device if every single app made for android needs a 15 step process on a pc to even unlock the ability to load that app to even begin working.
Specs of the headsets are going to waste not offering the DP connection.
Just seems like meta has had its day, HTC and Pico now in the game and despite what people will argue meta do better, there is alot of things both are doing better than meta in the immediate time after release, let alone several years in.

2023.03.26 21:27 OverlordZombwich Gyro Controller that I can use for FPS games as well as my KBM tasks?
Kind of a weird question I know but I'm looking for a controller with gyro that has back paddles like an xbox elite controller that also can be used as my keyboard and mouse. I can kind of get that with my elite series 2 but it's extremely clunky and just generally a bad experience. The same goes for if I use it in PC native games I have to set up specific keybinds and generally run out of buttons even with shifting etc. It's also not a good experience in menus for survival games and stuff like that.
I know most will recommend a steam controller but I haven't been able to find a new one still in box for less than 200$ with shipping. Is there any alternatives that's come out recently? I feel pretty SOL at the moment and it really sucks because I switched to a trackball mouse to deal with hand issues and it's not helping as much as I'd hoped. Probably going to have to give up some of my favorite games if I can't find something as much as I don't want to.
Anywho, if anyone has any ideas please let me know. I'd greatly appreciate it.

2023.03.26 21:27 Rodz_US Progress on Xbox Series S SSD Swap
Hello everyone. When the Series S came out with 500GB of storage, I immediately wanted to swap the ssd for a larger size. After seeing multiple people attempt to swap and fail, I pushed this project to the back of the list. I recently brought this back up to work on and might have found a solution if testing my theory works. I don't own the console so I placed the order for one and will begin the test around April 3rd. I don't have high hopes because I am sure someone has already tested my method but I wasn't able to find any videos on it.

2023.03.26 21:26 ChickenMcSandwich My Thoughts on the Console Beta
Xbox Series X - For me, I am really surprised about how smoothly it all went.
Negatives
- crashed one or two times while typing a message on an arcade server
- not having ability to see speed at checkpoints / no clear gear indicator (I know this is open planet but would be good to have this in game)
- loss of sound at the start of every COTD round for 1-3 seconds. Really distracting for some reason.
- can't invite friends to game via Xbox live - clunky ubisoft invites only
- no cam 7
- Skill issue
- I will no longer be getting Div 1 on COTD
- what are gears?
- ice
Positives
- Running smooth, graphics OK and no noticeable frame drops
- Fun
- showcase of club access, I'll definitely be getting it on release
- Fun
I've a new found respect for the pros and even those who can get ATs on all campaign maps, god damn those black tracks are horrible.
Looking forward to getting stuck into the full release, whenever that is...hopefully 1st April.

2023.03.26 21:24 StepwiseUndrape574 Street Thugs Rejoice, Rockstar Confirms GTA 6 And Work Is Well Underway
It's been around eight and a half years since the last major installment in the Grand Theft Auto series, the longest gap ever in a franchise that spans seven main titles. So when is the next one coming? We can't say for sure, but Rockstar Games has not finally confirmed that there will in fact be a Grand Theft Auto 6, and that it is deep in development.
A new game in the franchise feels long overdue, though Grand Theft Auto V, which surpassed 150 million units sold last summer, and GTA Online have continued to scratch that itch for virtual wanton mayhem. It remains to be seen what the next entry brings, but we can assume (or at least hope) it will take full advantage of the latest hardware capabilities.
"With the unprecedented longevity of GTA V, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series," Rockstar Games stated in a blog post. "With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered—and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway."
Grand Theft Auto V Characters Rockstar Games doesn't come right out and say "GTA 6" but whatever the title, this will be the sixth main installment. It follows GTA V (2013), GTA IV (2008), GTA: San Andreas (2004), GTA: Vice City (2002), GTA III (2001), GTA 2 (1999), and the original GTA release (1997). That's 25 years of GTA, folks.
It seems more than plausible that GTA 6 will tap into the hardware capabilities of the latest generation game consoles (Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5) and graphics cards (Ampere and RDNA 2), given that a remaster of GTA V is headed to systems on next month.
As to what GTA 6 will bring to the table, supposed leaks and rumors have been all over the map. There's been chatter of a return to Miami with Liberty City and Vice City making appearances, and players being able to assume the role of a drug lord. GTA 6 is also rumored to be the most expansive title in the franchise yet.
For now we'll have to keep guessing, as Rockstar Games says it will be "sharing more as soon as we are ready." Waiting is the hard part, but knowing GTA 6 is happening and is deep in development will have to suffice for the time being.

2023.03.26 21:20 Majestic_Ad3867 Achievement Hunting Activision Games Not On The Store??
Potentially an extremely niche issue but other fans of games may be able to help me with this, or other fans of games like these may be able to hear good/bad news. Anyways, i was a nintendo kid growing up, so i mostly player my Wii and my DS, and i played ultimate alliance on both of those devices and remember loving it even though i dont really remember the story, just it was so much fun playing as wolverine. As we stand, this game is not on the store and is completely unavailable, but if (when) xbox buys activision do you think theyll make it available again/ put it on gamepass? should i just buy it for my 360 and play it there? i am very unsure of this and didnt know if they put titles like these on gamepass before, as i would of course rather play it on my series x rather than a 360 lol. im so sorry for making you read this much but i am super curious on what to do.
