2023.03.06 13:57 boutell New US CHAdeMO fast chargers in February 2023
Here are all of the new US CHADeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in February 2023, according to the Department of Energy.
There were 106 new CHADeMOs added in February. To put it in perspective, there were 194 CCS chargers added in January. Yes, the gap is definitely widening. But speaking as a Leaf owner, since only Nissan makes new cars that use CHADeMO, overall I'm still pleased that new CHADeMOs are becoming available. 106 is still significantly better than the 74 new chargepoints that came online in February 2022.
We all know that CHADeMO is a legacy format and will eventually go away, but clearly Nissan and their partners are continuing to support it for the time being. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, while the CCS-charged Ariya may finally be available without a waiting list, you can still buy a new Leaf.
The federal infrastructure plan requires those seeking funds to build new charging stations to build four CCS chargepoints first, but also permits CHADeMO to be funded once that threshold is met. I don't see why EVgo wouldn't continue to take advantage of that, for now, especially since baking Tesla's CHADeMO adapter into their stations is currently part of their strategy to support Tesla vehicles without the need for the Tesla driver to buy an adapter. This will become less of a factor as more Tesla owners buy the Tesla CCS adapter.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or reading these reports is just frustrating in your state, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications only when new stations actually open. You can
sign up at evpov.com. I built it to help EV owners like myself (especially my fellow Leaf owners). You can pick other plug types as well.

2023.01.14 14:28 boutell New US CCS chargers report for December 2022
Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in December 2022, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:
- Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
- Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHAdeMO car, see my matching post in /leaf.
There were 147 CCS charge points added in December. That's a nice uptick from November.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or just prefer not to check this list monthly when new openings are rare in your area, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications as soon as they open. You can
sign up at evpov.com. Or not! I don't really have a business plan here, I built it to help EV owners like myself.
I also have some nice EVPOV bumper stickers. If you'd like one drop me a line.

2023.01.14 14:21 boutell New US CHAdeMO fast chargers in December 2022
Here are all of the new US CHADeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in December 2022, according to the Department of Energy.
There were 126 new CHADeMOs added in December. To put it in perspective, there were 147 CCS chargers added in December. Since only Nissan makes new cars that use these, I continue to be pleasantly surprised by the number of new CHADeMOs available.
We all know that CHADeMO is a legacy format and will eventually go away, but clearly Nissan and their partners are continuing to support its growth for the time being. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, you can still buy a new Leaf. And while you can finally join the queue for a CCS-based Nissan Ariya, it is still a "limited availability" vehicle for now.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications as soon as they open. You can
sign up at evpov.com. I built it to help EV owners like myself (especially my fellow Leaf owners). You can pick other plug types as well.
I also have some nice EVPOV bumper stickers. If you'd like to spread the love drop me a line.

2023.01.14 14:10 boutell New US CCS chargers report for December 2022
If you'd like one drop me a line.

www.twitch.tv/drumas Welcome to /Steelbooks 25k Subscribers MEGA raffle! Thanks to citricacidx and the rest of the mod team for allowing the game. When I joined the sub there was only around 1500 members! So to celebrate 25K we are hosting another raffle! This is your chance to win some amazing releases for very little. The last raffle we did had 20 winners! (Link to Last game:https://www.reddit.com/Steelbooks/comments/lyvb67/welcome_to_rsteelbooks_mega_raffle_2021_over_150/)
We are going to have the mostly the same rules and game structure as last time, but with a few changes so make sure to read! We will have multiple winners and game can get as big as you guys want it to get, there is also the possibility the game will be small, all depends on the amount of slots filled! Here is how it will work:
Rules
- There will be no numbers to pick in this game. This is a straight fill game. There will be simply be "slots" If you sign up for X number of slots your username will be written X number of times on the slot list. You may sign up for as many slots as you wish, each slot increases chance to win. PLEASE DO NOT SPEND MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD
- Each slot will cost $2. No minimum or maximum number of slots to play
- Unique winners: The goal of this game is to have as many winners as possible, therefore if your username is drawn twice you will only win once, and we will move to the next username down to be the next winner. So while buying more slots does increase your probability to win, you can't win more than once. So keep this in mind when deciding the # of slots you buy.
- In order to sign up simply make a parent comment on this post with the amount of slots you want. For example if you want 10 slots simply comment "10 slots" If later on you decide you want 2 more simply make a new comment "2 more"
- The game will be open until 11:59 pm March 26 to allow maximum visibility.
- Drawing will be done March 27 on Twitch live stream with live comments on this thread.
- No new reddit accounts can join.
Prizes:
- There are over 150 steelbooks to pick from. Here is a group photo of the prizes
https://imgur.com/a/3fVtdPQ
- A complete list that includes condition/notes/individual photos of each prize can be found here:

- Prizes are organized into 4 tiers. 1, 2, 3, and Grail. Winners can pick 1 steelbook from tier one, or 2 from tier 2 or 3 from tier 3. Grail prizes are those worth $150-$200 and are locked unless the game gets big enough. Please refer to the google sheet to reference which prizes are on which tier.
How are Grails chosen? Please refer to the table below to see how many winners will be eligible to chose a grail prize. If a grail winner decides not to chose a grail, the ability to chose a grail will be passed on to the next winner and so on. *This means that grail winners can no longer instead choose double the regular prizes like in previous games.
Picking Winners
Here is a table that describes how many will be picked at the close of the game. If your mobile reddit app does not display the table correctly here is a photo of the table: https://i.imgur.com/wo70iP8.jpg
Slots Filled | # of Winners | Picks |
100 | 2 Winners | Winners pick 1 from Tier 1, or 2 from Tier 2, or 3 from Tier 3 |
150 | 3 Winners | Winners pick 1 from Tier 1, or 2 from Tier 2, or 3 from Tier 3 |
200 | 3 Winners and 1 B-Winner | Grails unlocked for 1st winner. Winners pick 1 from Tier 1, 2 from Tier 2, or 3 from Tier 3. B-Winner picks 1 from tier 2 or 3 |
250 | 4 Winners and 1 B-Winner | Grails unlocked for 1st winner. Winners pick 1 from Tier 1, 2 from Tier 2, or 3 from Tier 3. B-Winner picks 1 from tier 2 or 3 |
300 | 5 winners and 1 B-Winner | Grails unlocked for 1st winner. Winners pick 1 from Tier 1, 2 from Tier 2, or 3 from Tier 3. B-Winner picks 1 from tier 2 or 3 |
350 | 6 winners and 1 B-Winner | Grails unlocked for 1st winner. Winners pick 1 from Tier 1, 2 from Tier 2, or 3 from Tier 3. B-Winner picks 1 from tier 2 or 3 |
400 | 6 winners and 2 B-Winners | Grails unlocked for winner 1-2. Winners pick 1 from Tier 1, 2 from Tier 2, or 3 from Tier 3. B-Winner picks 1 from tier 2 or 3 |
| | The pattern continues. For every 200 slots another grail winner is unlocked and another B Winner is added. |
- Winners will be selected on a random.org verified give away drawing with Dice. The way the random.org drawing will work is
- Dice roll to determine how many times list will be shuffled. Minimum accepted roll will be 5.
- The list will be shuffled X amount of times depending on the dice roll
- The users at the top of the final list will be the winners!
- The very last user on the list will win a mystery box! (If they are in the main winner list the mystery box will move to the next user up)
Shipping
- Shipping to the USA will be free
- I will split shipping 50/50 with anyone international.
Payments for slots
- I will accept payment through Cash app, Venmo, or paypal friends and family. Two reasons for FF. 1) I am only providing Goods to the winners. If someone pays Goods and Services and then does not win anything they can file and claim and get their money back since nothing was delivered to them. (This has happened to me) 2) is that every GS transaction has a $0.30 + 3% fee. $0.30 is not big deal for one large payment, but this ends up being like an 18% fee on a $2 slot payment. Last time I did this many people paid goods and the fees added up. If you are not comfortable paying FF *please do not play.** If the winner wants a refund on their FF payment to pay GS I am okay with that. If you must pay goods and services please cover the fees.
- You will have until Saturday March 26 at 11:59 PST to pay.
- Pay as you call slots may be available on the day of the drawing up to an hour before the draw. Unpaid slots will be deleted.
- If you do not think you will be available to pay in a timely manner or do not check your reddit PMs every day please pay in advance
- always be vigilant when paying on the internet. PMs for payments will only be coming from me. Please read usernames carefully and do not click on links from users who are not me.
Good Luck and have fun!

2020.08.10 16:41 dmartin-ames August 11, 2020 Ames City Council Topics
| Hi ames, The Ames City Council meets on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom. The agenda includes: - 24. Presentation of the Draft Greenhouse Gas Inventory and additional studies. The Greenhouse Gas Inventory, Climate Vulnerability Assessment, and Citywide Solar PV Energy Potentials Study were commissioned last year. "The goal of the Citywide Inventory is to estimate the GHG emissions associated with the activities of the people who live, work, learn, travel, visit, and recreate within the City’s geographical boundaries during the three study years, 2014, 2016, and 2018. The goal of the City Operations Assessment is similar but with a narrower focus on the emissions associated with the City governmental activities. Both of the analyses must be transparent and able to be replicated, updated, and compared with future assessments for Ames and assessments for peer cities." Establishing this baseline data is a prerequisite to developing a Climate Action Plan, which will investigate and recommend how Ames should respond to the climate crisis. Establishing a process for developing the Climate Action Plan is our logical next step. There are hundreds of pages of content here; the presentation during the meeting should be helpful in putting it all into context.

Staff Report on Factors to Consider If Implementing a City-wide Face Covering Mandate. On July 15, following a unanimous vote of Council, our Mayor sent a letter to Governor Reynolds asking her to delegate to Ames the authority to mandate face coverings in public settings such as out and about or within businesses. Meanwhile, Council also wondered what criteria we would use to decide to issue a face covering mandate if that authority were actually granted to us, and so we requested that staff develop a process for making such a decision. The report suggests triggers such as: the Mary Greeley Intensive Care Unit reaching its capacity, the Story County positivity rate exceeding 10%, ISU and schools reverting to online-only instruction, businesses independently reducing their hours, and/or direct orders from the Governor. This report also includes a round-up of other Iowa cities' recommendations and requirements for face coverings. In addition, our City Attorney describes an "alternative legal theory" being discussed among municipal attorneys in Iowa. Under this theory, the Attorney General's analysis is mistaken, meaning that current law together with the public health disaster proclamation do not give the Governor exclusive authority over face covering mandates. However, having considered this alternative theory, our City Attorney stands by his advice that the City of Ames does not currently have authority to mandate face coverings in public settings.
- 26. Discussion of City Council Conferences in FY 2020/21. "It is not yet clear exactly what the impact of the pandemic will be on Fiscal Year 2020/21 revenues; however, City staff is proceeding cautiously with expenditures until the impacts can be fully known." Given this, Council is being asked to consider whether to refrain from attending out-of-state conferences this year.
- 29. Hearing on Integrated Site Plan (Major Site Development Plan and Preliminary Plat) for 3619 Stange Road. This proposal would allow for a Burgie's Coffee and Tea Co. shop, with a drive-through, to be added to the land between the Fareway grocery store and Stange Road north of Bloomington Road.
- 30. Staff Report on request from Dickson Jensen for sidewalk waiver adjacent to Bricktowne Development. The City has halted issuing building or occupancy permits for Bricktowne due to the lack of sidewalks required by a 2017 agreement. In this item, the developer requests that City Council waive the sidewalk requirement due to conditions of the ditch in the right-of-way and because the sidewalks in question do not connect to other areas.
Non-Agenda Packet: The following items are requests and communications to the council that are not on the agenda for full discussion. This includes staff reports and communications or requests from constituents and developers. Typically the council will ask city staff for more information (a memo), put the item on a future agenda for deliberation and possible action, or just accept the communication, taking no further action. Council generally processes these requests and communications during the agenda portion called "Disposition of Communications to Council." - Water Meter Appeal. On July 28, Council asked staff for this memo regarding a water meter replacement fee appeal.
- Potential Rezoning Near Sunset Ridge. A resident writes to express concern about potential rezoning of land currently outside of the Ames city limits but immediately adjacent to the Sunset Ridge neighborhood (e.g., Wilder Ave., north of Lincoln Way).
- Annexation Permission Request. Verbio writes asking Ames to permit it to annex property to the City of Nevada.
Thanks for reading! David Martin / Ames City Council, Ward 3 P.S. The continued uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic makes mail-in voting in the November general election a compelling option. If you live in Story County and would like to vote by mail, you can fill out and mail in a postage paid mail in ballot request form. If you live outside of Story County, look for the correct information via the Iowa Secretary of State's absentee ballot site. And if you're not registered to vote -- the November election will be here before you know it! You can register to vote or update your voter registration online using your Iowa a driver’s license or ID number at Iowa Secretary of State website. Those without a drivers's license or ID number can get forms and information here https://www.storycountyiowa.gov/638/Voter-Information-Forms. submitted by dmartin-ames to ames [link] [comments] |
2020.07.04 14:38 noscarstoshow KCRG Morning News Random Declarations: 07/04/2020
I was up early enough to watch this. Figured I'd try my hand at this self flagulation that is watching the KCRG Morning News and regurgitating observations. It seems to be a tradition?
What is an Owl Alert and what is it supposed to do? I just watched an entire commercial that tried to sell it to me and I still have no damned clue what it does or is.
Dave Wright needs to calm down on the Leisure Suit Larry impersonation. He's louder than that silent Honda Dealer ad.
Corey seems right at home talking about weather as exciting as "80s and Nice!" For 10 days in a row.
Jordee: "GOOD MORNING! Thank you for joining us on this Fourth of July weekend! Corey, any plans for the rest of the day?"
Corey: "No, actually, nothing....."
Wow! I sat down 6 minutes ago and they hit me hard with that shit at the top of the A block in the 6:30. Corey is a god damned LEDGEND. He gives no fucks, he is there to talk weather. Get in, get done, get out. I thought these were just comedically exaggerated. Nope, guess not. Jordee...is she setting him up on purpose? No way this innocently happens every day. This schtick is hilarious! It is like Tigger and Eeyore in the Morning.
Can someone help KCRG upgrade their Internet connection? The Fareway Lady is glitching out. Joe seems genuinely excited about doing things other than the weather. Way too excited.

2020.06.27 16:09 TheDevolution27 Final KCRG Weekend Morning News Log 06/27
That was admittedly a bit of click bait. This probably won’t be the final recap, but it will be the final weekly log. This will likely become more sporadic to keep things fresh and maintain the novelty.
Jordee: “I think it’s too hot personally.”
Corey: “Well, unfortunately not a lot of good news for Jordee in the forecast then.”
Drive-Thru Pancake Breakfast this morning at ImOn Ice Arena until 10:00.
Carousel Motors: “We’re not just a dealership; we’re a lifestyle.”
Corey: “That possibility for some rain or storms does exist through a good chunk of the day both at the same time periods here.” WTF, Corey? Am I supposed to decode this forecast?
“A very much weakening phase.” Again, I’m at a loss for words, and it sounds like Corey is, too.
Jordee, alluding to next weekend’s 4th of July holiday: “You can always just go and celebrate in your own backyard, too.”
Corey: “I suppose so.”
There’s something quaint about watching a high school softball game in a soybean field.
Foster Appliance is running an ad with what appears to be a man’s decapitated head in a microwave. Who’s hungry?!?
We might get some Saharan dust tomorrow.
Jordee: “I always love the weather. I learn so much.”
Corey: “That’s why we’re here.”
Let’s face it: One of the main reasons these recaps work is due to Jordee’s stilted delivery. In an honest review, she has bad pacing, diction, and delivery, especially for someone who’s anchored for multiple years. The job boils down to how well one can read a teleprompter, and she’s not good at it. There’s likely a reason she’s been in this market for years and stuck in the purgatory of weekend morning anchoring.
Is RoofMax a snake oil racket?
Waterloo’s police chief has a pretty sick forearm tattoo.
Positive Parenting says parents don’t have to be perfect. PP is a model for imperfection.
During his last full forecast segment, Corey vanished from the screen and then magically reappeared. Jordee’s audible “Whoaaa” is worth a rewatch if you can access a replay. It hits at about the :50 mark of the hour. Enjoy.
Jordee: “I’m gonna have to drink lots of water and try to be nice.”
Joe I-get-wild-with-cargo-shorts Winters is back with his infamous Fareway segment.
Fareway dietician Whitney: “Eat the rainbow.”
Jordee’s sign off after Corey’s forecast for next weekend: “What a way (noticeable pause) to start the July.” Face, meet palm.
That’s it. Eat the rainbow and drink the sun.

2020.06.13 16:14 TheDevolution27 KCRG Weekend Morning News Log 06/13
Everyday Families: “People need to hear now more than ever.”
Joe “early to bed, early to rise, keeps a man prudish and weather wise” Winters is in for Corey.
Peaceful Protest #2 is tonight at 5:00 at Beaver Park.
Kirkwood commercial: “At Kirkwood, I’m on the fast track to graduate in two years.” It’s a two-year AA degree.
Marshall’s Furniture: “Stay safe and shop responsibly.” Irresponsible furniture shopping is the real epidemic. I don’t need people rolling around on display beds!
“All that political correct jazz.”
Story on Iowa 4-H: “This is Irving.” I think Irving was an alpaca. Or a llama. Either way, he looked like a guy I could sit down and have a beer with. At one point, a goat tried to eat the camera.
Cedar Memorial airing a very creepy commercial, even by cemetery standards. The ad’s takeaway: Planning your death is the greatest gift you’ll give your kids.
Joy from Waukon emailed Joe to say they had a few sprinkles in Allamakee County. Sounds like Joy lives a vibrant life.
Jordee threw to Joe’s Fareway segment by pronouncing fiber with a level of awkwardness that set the tone for the segment to come...
Joe Dub’s Fareway segment is about the importance of fiber. Now, this is the content I expect from Joe! Fareway dietician Whitney: “Fiber helps you go to the bathroom.”
That’s it for Saturday. Eat your fiber.

2020.05.16 16:06 TheDevolution27 KCRG Weekend Morning News Log 05/16
Last week, one reddit user called this weekly log “possibly the stupidest thread I’ve ever seen.” That person obviously hasn’t spent much time on reddit. Or, it was Joe Winters.
Everyday Families: “The pharmacy can be a really confusing place in the eye-drop aisle.”
Scott Saville ad about social distancing; they’re now trying to use the return of football as the carrot to try and get people to act responsibly. Good luck...
Jordee mixing it up with black-framed glasses.
Corey: “Off to the west, precipitation lurks.”
That garage band guitar player was shredding “Sweet Child o’ Mine.”
Corey talking about this week’s upcoming Virtual Academy Wednesday with Justin Gehrts, Ask a Meteorologist: “Preferably weather-related questions, but I’m sure he’ll take any Corey-related questions as well.” LOL, you’re the real MVP, Corey.
Corey: “Day won’t be quite as bad as it looks.” Corey with the used-car-salesman approach to meteorology.
Corey: “Take a trip with me to the southeastern United States.” I like to think this is Corey’s standard pick-up line.
Corey admitted he screwed up the Weather Wise question in the 6:00 hour.
The difference in tone and substance between the managing bro at Brother’s and the managing partner at Big Grove was staggering.
Positive Parenting’s advice for parents homeschooling their kids: Ask other people for advice.
Corey wasn’t sure what river runs through Cascade. He got it right with the Maquoketa, though. Specifically, it’s the North Fork Maquoketa River
Joe “Why the H-E-double-hockey-sticks is there gravy on my mashed potatoes!” Winters in with the Fareway meal segment. Today’s segment was about lean protein; not exactly the first two words that come to mind when I think of Joe Winters.
Enjoy your day; it’s not as bad as it looks.

2020.03.28 15:14 TheDevolution27 KCRG Weekend Morning News Log 03/28
Hope all are safe, solitary, and stable. It was a jam-packed morning with our favorite local broadcast crew:
During his first quick weather report, Corey said, “Fog, which is the first sign of moisture,” in a deadpan delivery that really underscored his lack of emotion for the idea of fog.
Corey’s advice for a day that could include severe weather: “Don’t be afraid, just react.”
McGrath continues to add to the canon of shitty local commercials with some spastic St. Pat’s-themed ad.
Scott Saville made an appearance from home to deliver a story on Iowa wrestling where he said, “Taking away competition from a wrestler is like tearing their heart out.” A tad hyperbolic, no?
Corey often responds to Jordee’s thanks with a, “You got it,” that comes across like he just handled her IT help desk support ticket.
During his last full weather segment, Corey said things would get “showery.” He also said “keep your wits about you.” After that, he paused for what seemed like an eternity, then tossed to Jordee, who said, “You said ‘keep your wits.’ I like that. That’s funny.”
At that point, Jordee attempted to toss to Joe Winters’ prudish Fareway meal segment, said they were having technical difficulties, then got cut off mid sentence.
During Corey’s final weather update, the production room played the outro music extremely loud, essentially drowning out Corey’s voice.
That’s a wrap. I might file another one tomorrow, based on popular demand and if tomorrow’s show is eventful, which it typically is with this dream team.

2020.03.03 07:02 MrDarklight98 This House Hates You Part 1
Prologue: A Complete Detailed History of the Graves House
1890: The Graves House and nearby barn are constructed by Thomas Graves, for his wife Tabitha Graves and their two sons Timothy and Corey, outside the small town of Fontanelle, Iowa.
1893: Timothy murders his brother Corey in the nearby barn with a scythe in the middle of the night while both parents were asleep, both of the boys were 13 years of age.
1896: Tabitha murders her husband Thomas in the basement of the house with her kitchen knife. She then hangs herself in the barn where her son was murdered.
1897: Timothy commits suicide by gouging out his own jugular with a fork while undergoing therapy at Mt. Pleasant Asylum. His psychiatrist, Dr. Henry Lumen, said he suffered from a delusion that a man in the basement of the house would not let him be happy and forced him to murder his brother after subjecting him to night terrors until he lost his mind.
1900: The Durrel Family moves into the Graves House after having previously lived out of state. They are comprised of Robert Durrel, his wife Amy Durrel, their son Danny, and daughter Krisie.
1900: After a month of living in the home without disturbance, Krisie and Danny are both found mauled to pieces in the barn sometime during the night. Both parents have no idea why their children were in the barn or how, as all doors and windows were locked at the time. Police said the wounds both children sustained were similar to those you would find on a bear attack victim, but it is unclear what did kill the children.
1902: Amy Durrel throws herself from the attic window and is impaled on the handle of a pitchfork that her husband had stuck into the ground with the intent to use it later that day.
1902: After several months of living in solitude, Robert Durrel is found dismembered in the house. His head, arms, legs, torso, and organs are all found in separate rooms.
1910: After repainting the house from white to a more welcoming blue color, a young married couple takes up residence in the house. Their names were Horris Blidge and Jenny Blidge.
1911: Horris begins an affair with a woman in town by the name of Maria North.
1911: After several months of the affair continuing, Jenny discovers this and castrates Horris in his sleep, he bleeds to death. Jenny then kidnapped Maria and tortured her in the basement of the house for several days via bodily harm, breaking all of her toes and fingers, among other things. Maria eventually is killed by the wounds she sustained from a meat cleaver to her genitals. Jenny ran down the dirt road to the nearby town immediately following the incident. She was taken into custody after admitting what she had done to anybody she saw on the main street of town.
1912: On Christmas day, Jenny gouges out her own eyes while undergoing therapy at Mt. Pleasant Asylum. Her psychiatrist Dr. Henry Lumen said she experienced delusions similar to that of Timothy Graves. She told stories of a man that lived in the basement of the house who had an orange face and wore a "lavish and fancy cape". He persuaded her to fall in love with him and also exposed the infidelity of her husband Horris. She said that all of the acts of violence she committed were supervised and instigated by him.
1930: After a long period of the home being empty, the land is purchased by Bob
Grady, a farmer who builds two additional sheds on the land, as well as multiple confinements for hogs and cattle. He mostly leaves the house alone and only uses the property for farming.
1932: Three teenage boys sneak onto Grady’s property in the middle of the night assumedly for the purpose of usual adolescent horseplay. They enter the house and are missing for three weeks until one of Grady's farm hands finds their bodies morbidly poised doing household tasks. One imitating the act of doing the dishes in the kitchen, the other reading a newspaper in an armchair left by an old resident, and the other simply walking up the attic stairs. All of them are held in place by a complex system of metal spikes and wires to keep them in their static positions. All of them are missing their eyeballs and are permanently smiling intensely.
1934: After Grady is deemed not-guilty in the morbid crime, he boards up the house and continues using the area to farm. He plants several trees to surround the house and shield it from onlookers on the nearby dirt road. He also places several warnings and property signs around the area to ward off any unwanted visitors. He continues using the house for storage.
1940: Grady's house in town burns down from suspected arson, while he is working late at the farmhouse. He moves in with his brother Bill Grady for the time being.
1940: 3 months after moving in, Bill is killed while helping his brother in the barn at the Graves farm via a falling pitchfork from the upper loft in the barn. Bob then takes up solitary residence in his late brother’s home.
1941: Grady is forced into moving into the Graves house after his brother’s house also burns down, also suspected to be arson.
1945: Grady becomes a shut-in, he is known around town to be mean and rude. He spends most of his days walking around the property and continues to plant trees to surround the house.
1946: Grady is visited by Dr. Henry Lumen, now 76 years old and retired. He offers to buy the house from Grady so that he can study it, having dedicated much of his life to the subject. Grady refuses.
1946: Grady's body is found being devoured by his own hogs the morning after Lumen's visit.
1947: Lumen purchases the house and takes up residence.
1957: Lumen dies of old age while sitting in the armchair that Thomas Graves left years ago.
1970: The Graves House mysteriously peels its blue paint off and reverts back to its original white paint, sometime between Lumen's passing and 1970. Its boarded-up windows and warning signs also vanish, presumed to be stolen.
1980: New residents finally purchase the house, a devoutly religious family consisting of husband and wife, Rodney Louis, and Linda Louis, their 5 children, Harry, Ron, Christofer, Zachary, and Ramsey, all boys. Ages 14, 13, 9, 7, and 4, respectively.
1985: The family conducts a seance after Ramsey talks about a man living in the basement that wants to eat him, describing him as "Dracula but with a pumpkin head". The family also notices several usual haunted house indications such as things moving on their own, foul smells, doors slamming by themselves, and recurring nightmares. The disturbances intensify in the house following the ritual.
1986: A now five-year-old Ramsey is found dead in one of the sheds near the house, impaled on farm equipment, an apparent accident.
1987: Harry the oldest of the boys, gets married to Julia Stein at the age of 21. They both die in a head-on collision with a semi-truck the day after the wedding.
1988: Rodney and Linda's marriage deteriorates until the deaths of Ron and Christofer, both of whom drown in a nearby creek that runs a few acres from the house.
1989: The now 16-year-old Zachary and his father move out of the house after a divorce. Linda commits suicide after she overdoses on pills in the bathtub of the house later that year.
1993: Rodney Louis is killed by a heart attack while having dinner with his son. Zachary, in a fit of grief, drives to the Graves house and attempts to plow his car into the house but crashes into a tree and is thrown from the vehicle. He dies of internal injuries.
1994: Dante Graves, the descendant of Thomas Graves, is born to his parents Dan and Lana Graves, their only child.
2003: Dan and Lana move into the Graves house after documents are discovered, revealing that Thomas had intended the house to be the birthright of any member of his bloodline.
2007: Dante is the sole survivor of a massacre at the house. He claims a man in a Halloween costume came out of the basement and stabbed his mother to death in the kitchen and hung his father in the barn. Police were unable to obtain any further information from him.
The House Evil Calls Home
1
Most stories like this would start with a dark and stormy night, but it actually starts on a rather hot and humid summer afternoon. A long and relaxing sunset turning the countryside orange, toads croaking in creeks, cicadas chirping loudly in unison. The fields upon fields of corn sitting completely still and at attention, before slowly receding into the urban streets of Fontanelle. It was a tranquil and peaceful Sunday afternoon in town, what with most businesses closed, most decent folk inside watching whatever junk is broadcast on their 5 channels, before retreating to bed to wake up and start the daily grind again. Some children even played in the streets on days like this, simply because with no traffic, it failed to serve its purpose as a street. It was now a large and most perfect kickball court, or a water gun fight arena, or an excellent market for trading card games and Game Boy linking.
Yes, Fontanelle was a land of many relaxed and dormant minds on a hot Sunday afternoon. However, that’s not the primary battleground for which this horror story is fought, more accurately, it’s just the backdrop. To get to the real heart of this story, you would have to keep going straight past the old white Lutheran Church down the street from the middle school. Keep going down that road about ten minutes until you reach an old red church schoolhouse on your left. There should be a gravel road right past it, take that. Watch the dip right past the old iron bridge about a quarter mile down, then keep going till on your right, you should see a large patch of trees, with one lonely dirt road stretching into them, almost being consumed by them and their shade.
Drive down it and you will notice something odd. All of the cicadas, toads, wind, or any other natural noises you would hear in a place like this, will cease. You will instead hear only the ambiance of your own vehicle, or for the bravest (and most foolish), the sound of your own footsteps and heartbeat. If you go far enough (the length varies depending on who’s giving the directions), you will come across a decently sized house, with chipped and peeling paint, perched up on a small hill. The trees will by this point all be standing a good distance away, to give it the space it requires and demands. Make no mistake, you are in the presence of evil, you are not welcome, and should you dare taunt or try to enter the house, or any of its sinister-looking comrades, you will surely meet an unfortunate, grizzly, and lonely end.
This is the home of a young boy whom you will in time grow most familiar with, Dante Graves. His mother named him after the famous poet, not because she was a fan, but because she liked the way it sounded when put together with his last name and wanted him to have a name that would command dignity and respect every time someone said it aloud. We join this young man on one of the worst days of his life, but also on the most necessary day of his life, as it will shape the man he needs to be for the coming war with the forces of evil that lurk in the shadows.
2
Dante sat in the dining room, which was sandwiched in an awkward point between the kitchen and living room, playing with a small shoebox filled with Ninja Turtles. He crashed his characters into each other, playing out the fantasy storylines he would never see on the tv show. Every now and again, hearing a thump or a scratch from his least favorite place in the house, the basement. He tried his best to ignore these noises, he knew what was down there. Meanwhile, his mother performed the task she felt most comfortable doing, the dishes. She would much rather join her husband in the living room watching tv, but this would most likely end in a fight. When she was doing dishes, there was nothing he could complain about.
She looked to her son, playing with his toys and making weak sound effects when the toys attacked each other. She smiled a bit seeing something most parents see on a daily basis, she however rarely saw him do much of anything. Her happiness fleeted after she started to get it in her head that 11 was too old to be playing with turtles. She then turned back around to do the dishes for the third time.
Dan sat in the old wooden chair left from some previous tenant in the living room, noisily rocking back and forth while watching something on the tv, I say something because it wasn't really relevant, not even to him. He instead sat staring at the wall above the tv, occasionally glancing out the large picture window to see the orange sky slowly turn dark. What Dan was more focused on was that his son was still playing with toys at age 11. Dante had turned down his father’s suggestions to play any manner of sports. He instead would catch his son sneaking into the living room at night to snatch horror movie on VHS to take into his room and watch on his tiny bedroom tv. After the second time, he gave Dante the worst ass whipping he or any other father had dished out since the days of covered wagons. The damn kid just never listened, no matter what he did.
As Dan continued to tune more into what Dante was doing, he would hear short little silences. Dante would quit making noise when he heard a scratch or a thump from the basement but would then resume his play. Dan listened to this for a few minutes before he decided he toughen his son up, once and for all. He got out of his chair, shut off the tv, and stomped over to Dante. Dante glanced up from his toys a mere second before his father grabbed the back of his goodwill bought shirt and yanked him to his feet.
"W-What did I do Dad?" Dante frantically asked over and over.
"Wh-What d-did I do?" Dante continued to plead as his father dragged him through the kitchen, sock covered feet sliding across the laminate floor, trying to make a stand but the force pulling them along none the less.
Dan ripped open the basement door at the rear of the kitchen, tucked and hidden away in the corner behind a line of old and musty cabinets. He pointed down the dark stairs, "Get down there, or I'm puttin you down there." His father barked. Dante begged and pleaded some more in vain. His mother glanced over from her dishes and tried her best to ignore her kin’s cries and whimpers. She became disgusted at this pathetic show of whining and balling.
"Is he 3 years old or something?" she added in while still glancing shamefully down to her dishes.
"You stay the hell out of this Lana! I am teaching him to be a man!" Dan growled. Lana shuddered at her husband’s yelling, it made her cringe internally, hoping he didn't turn his wrath on her next. Dante was on his knees hugging the counter with his head down, sobbing, hoping the ordeal was over, but his father was not even close to finished.
Dan grabbed Dante's small and weak arm, before violently yanking him away from his grip on the kitchen cabinets below the counter. He placed his other hand on Dante's tiny neck gripping it tightly and forced Dante to look down the basement, before shoving him down onto the first few rickety wooden steps and slamming the door. Dante banged on the door and screamed and cried and balled, trying everything his instincts would tell him to do to earn some form of mercy or sympathy from his father. After his protests showed no effect, he peered under the door to see his father's feet casually walk away, leaving his son trapped in the dark dungeon beneath the house. Dante sat back against the door, not wanting to advance any further into the darkness. He tried to take some comfort in the small beam of light piercing underneath the door from the kitchen, and simply curled up into a little ball on that first wooden step, waiting, waiting for any form of escape to come.
3
Dante awoke from an accidental sleep. At first, confused to his location he found he was still sitting on the top step, but now, his neck and back hurt from the awkward angle he slept in. No way of knowing the time, he judged by the now dark kitchen that his parents had gone to bed, leaving him alone and able to escape. He slowly turned the nob of the basement door but found it wouldn't budge. The more he fought with it he realized something that chilled him to his core. The door wasn't locked, it didn't have one. Instead, the door handle was turning ever so slightly, before being wrestled back to its original position. He at first thought this was his father holding the door handle on the other side, not allowing him to escape, but the kitchen was dark. My god, the house won't let me open the door. Dante pulled back and stepped down a few steps. "D-dad?" he whimpered.
A low monotone voice from the other side of the door plainly replied, "No."
Dante continued walking backward down the steps, now in a cold sweat, heart racing locked staring at the door through the ever-enveloping darkness that surrounded him. He missed one step and slipped, tumbling to the cold and damp concrete that made up the basement floor. He scuffed his elbow, but he had no time to cry. A small flame struck itself in the darkness, it was a small black candle. Then another, and another, and another. Soon the entire floor was surrounded and permeated with small black candles, lighting up only a large six-by-six-foot circle made of chalk with a jack-o-lantern crudely drawn in the center, grinning back at Dante who now stood pressed into the farthest corner of the room as tight as he could fit. "Do you like it?" a raspy whisper came from the other side of the room where the wooden staircase lay. It was too dark for Dante to see who spoke the words.
"W-what? W-whose there?" Dante questioned.
"I'm here. Under the stairs boy." the voice instructed. Dante tried his best to see under the stairs, but it was total darkness, his mind raced to imagine who or what could possibly be speaking to him. "I hear you, all day, every day, walking around up there, hearing your parents argue, hearing you cry for mercy at the hands of your father." the voice continued to speak, still not personified. The candles flickered in the darkness of the cramped little basement, shining up against the walls, creating shadows by the staircase, but still not reaching the darkness underneath. Dante squinted through the darkness, trying his hardest to see into the void. "Come closer, I won’t bite." the voice chuckled sinisterly. Dante didn't think this sounded wise at all.
"Y-you come out and s-show yourself!" Dante managed to choke out, in his best "I'm in control voice.”
"Very well, if you wish for me to come to you, then I will." the voice calmly replied. A sound of clawed feet scraping across the pavement was heard, then a grunt of the basement dweller sitting up, and then a slow-moving shape, emerging from underneath the stairs.
At first, just one pitch-black hand emerged from the darkness. It gripped the side of the staircase, showing off its inhumanly long fingers. It was adorned with razor sharp claws at the edge of each bony finger. Then a second hand, just like the first, stretching out of the dark and gliding across the rough concrete wall. The candle lights dimly displayed these features, just enough for Dante to see from his vantage point, clear across the room, cowering in the corner. Then the two hands pulled the rest of the body from the darkness. It took Dante a second to fully comprehend what he was looking at, but it was the shape of a person, but it was most definitely not a human being. It moved like a disgraced and ugly portrait of how a person would move, twitching, creaking, and bending at every limp. It shuffled into the candlelight for Dante to make out its attire, an all-black suit but with exposed hands, those long slender, inhuman hands that were as black as the night itself, with long pointed fingernails at the edges. Dante then moved his gaze away from the body, and up to its head. He is a monster, and he’s staring right at me. He is going to eat me...
4
The face was one all too familiar to a childlike Dante, a child with a fondness for the festival of Halloween. It was a jack-o-lantern, not one that was carved or put out for decorations, but it was a pumpkin with a face. It was round and large, but rotten looking, with a crooked and dark crack sliced across the front forming an ominous parody of a mouth. Then it had a hole in the center, similar to that of a human skull, like an awkward triangle. But the most haunting feature of all, were the two beady yellow eyes, slimily glaring at young Dante from across the room. Still partially consumed in the darkness, the creature shuffled further, stepping into the circle of light the candles formed. That was when Dante realized how much this thing towered over him. He stood at least seven feet tall and was now cocking his head to the side, slowly, eyeing down the boy.
Dante curled up into a ball and put his head into his knees, sobbing. He looked up for only a moment to see that the monster was now staring dead at him, a few feet away from his face and inching closer. That’s when Dante smelt it, the warm and familiar aroma of pumpkin spice, but it was being interrupted by the smell of dead animals. It’s a smell that would stay with him for the rest of his life.
"You're going to die down here boy, and you’re gonna be trapped in this house, forever" the creature whispered to Dante. Just then, as the monster began to lay his hand on Dante's curly head of hair, a loud slamming of one of the cupboards in the kitchen interrupted the nightmare. The monster man slunk away and positioned himself at the foot of the stairs, cocking his head up to listen in on the conflict. Dante still cowering in the corner, now trying to imagine himself anywhere but here. It was clear to both the monster and the boy that a fight was raging upstairs in the kitchen now, as more and more loud bangs and spills were made.
The creature turned back to Dante who was now staring up the stairs as well. They locked eyes again. "Watch what old Jack can do." the creature said, revealing two things. Firstly, it had a name, "Jack", and more haunting, he didn't move his mouth when he spoke. The words seemed to just leave his body and enter the person he was speaking to, it sounded like the voice was filling the entire room, that low raspy voice, but it was only being said to you. Why does he have that big mouth then? Jack then awkwardly shambled up the stairs with intent, his large black cape dragging on every step before the staircase was filled with light by the basement door opening and the kitchen light blasting in, before being slammed shut again and the candles being blown out in unison.
Dante heard screaming, crashing, breaking, tearing, more screaming, swearing, and finally dull shuffling and dragging noises with the occasional thump. He picked himself up and slowly inched his way across the floor, realizing he had wet himself while backed into the corner. He one by one made his way up the stairs, the dragging and thumping growing louder as he advanced. The basement door was still open just a crack, the kitchen light beaming down the steps at Dante.
He reached the top, and slowly creaked the door open, before turning and looking into the kitchen. The bulb in the kitchen light was never the most reliable, but it was flickering heavily, just enough light for Dante to see the darkness of the dining room in the background before his gaze went to the floor and saw what was left of his mother. Blood, body parts, teeth, skin, organs, all over the walls, the counter, the floor, and in the center of the whole mess, a lump of red and wetness that resembled a torso with the remains of a head attached to it. Dante speed-walked out of the kitchen and into the dining room and out the front door. He turned back towards the house for a moment, looking at the one room in the house that was illuminated, the kitchen. Its windows splattered with blood, he started to run, down the porch steps, down the small hill the house sat on, and onto the dirt road in front of the house, before turning back once more.
In the kitchen window this time, he saw his mother staring at him, emptiness in her eyes, jaw hanging loosely on its one still connected hinge, blood caked all over her face. She glared with disappointed abandonment at her son, before slumping back to the floor, and the kitchen light flicking off. She couldn't have still been alive? What is this house? Dante's attention was then drawn to the right of the house, to the barn, its doors agape, its dim singular bulb flickering in the night showing another sight of horror. His father, strung up by a chain wrapped around his neck, hanging, writhing around, arms and legs waving and kicking in mid-air, right in the center of the barn ceiling, choking to death.
Dante fell on his rear, crying and shaking with fear and disturbed confusion. He then heard the gravel behind him rustle. He spun around to see the source of the noise and was met with the towering figure of Jack, holding something in his hand. My mother's hand. He kept her hand. Jack lifted the hand up over his head and slowly turned his mouth up to meet it. The large crackling mouth on Jack's head separated and revealed a black void which he chomped and swallowed the hand into before slowly closing his head up again. It’s his mouth, he uses the mouth to eat his victims...
5
Dante was just seconds away from passing out before Jack sat down on his rear also, cape, clothes, hands, and mouth smeared and filthy with blood and leftover pieces from the dual murders. Jack stared emptily at Dante for almost a minute before Dante spoke, "W-what are you going to do w-with me?" Jack didn't really respond in a way that made sense. He simply stood up, jokingly lunged at Dante to make him recoil in fear for a second, laughed, and said "I'll see ya later" in that raspy whisper that Dante had now become so familiar with, it was a voice that would ruin nights of sleep for years.
Jack slowly shambled his way up the yard, thumped his way up the porch steps, and then entered the house peacefully, letting the door slam behind him. Dante in a state of complete terror and bewilderment stared at the house. Studying every feature of it, the yard, the barn, the trees surrounding it, the darkness of every room and window. Then noticed a small light flicker on in the tiny little basement window, revealing the face of Jack glaring at him. Dante scrambled to his feet and took off running down the dirt road, under the cover of darkness, sprinting as hard as he could at his age and size. He tripped on tree branches, vines, rocks. Scraping his knees over and over, he ran until his lungs felt like they were filled with toxic gas, eating through his insides. He ran until his legs felt like they were mere fleshy tools that needed to be replaced when done using. He ran until he could stop thinking about the horrors he had witnessed. He ran until he could forget the piercing glare of Jack, staring back at him from the tiny basement window, emerging from the dark.
He reached Fontanelle at about 2 am. He pounded on the first door he could find, no answer. So, he ran to the next house and pounded on that door, a dog barked at him from the other side. So, he ran and ran some more, beating on the door to any house he could find before coming across a small yellow house, it was pleasant and cute. It was a house that irradiated love and warmth, even on a dark and villainous night such as this. Dante punched and kicked the door, screaming with all he had left in him. Sooner or later, a light came on in one of the windows of the house. A figure moved to the door and slowly opened it revealing an old couple, innocent looking, and tired. They stared at Dante through a screen door before the old man spoke up. "There a problem young man?" his voice patient and caring. Dante replied by fainting onto the lawn. His wife then opened the screen door and took Dante inside their warm and loving home. "He looks like he’s seen a ghost, Charles," the woman said, resting her hand on Dante's perspiring forehead, now laying him on a flower printed couch in their living room. Charles responded, "That boy looks like he’s been through hell, I'll call Sheriff Tipling."
Dante's Homecoming
1
Dante awoke to the relaxing sounds of lo-fi hip-hop, playing off his ps4, which he found in a GameStop dumpster. He was surprised it hadn't auto turned off while he was sleeping on his bumpy, spring lose couch. He used the discomfort as a sort of half-assed alarm clock. He rarely would obtain a full nights sleep unless he stayed over at one of his houses. You see, we haven't seen Dante since that fateful night back in 2007. We have joined our tired and groggy hero, here, in the more current year of 2018. He now works as a sort of sketchy ghost hunter. If you call him, off one of his equally sketchy flyers posted at every gas station in the city of Omaha, you can pay him whatever your willing to give, to come into your home and determine if it has any sort of supernatural entities or stigma. It pays shitty, and the work is shitty.
Dante tried several jobs in retail, but the fact of the matter is, he is just plain lazy. He arrives late, he talks back to rude customers, he has issues with authority, and is generally an off-putting person to be around. He wears the same dark jeans with the frayed edges every day, whatever shirt he managed to wash in the past couple days and a Hawaiian button up every day. He found it at a Salvation Army store once and under a bet with some friends, managed to walk out wearing it without paying.
Yes, Dante sure has not come very far since his days back at the Graves House. A house which he thinks about often, too often. He tries to forget, but those memories don't leave. He only manages to forget in fleeting moments of laughter, foolishness, or burying himself in old shitty horror films. It’s his way of poking fun at the dark forces that permeate his life. Dark forces which haunt every aspect of his life. They pull back every now and again, just to trick him into thinking happiness will come to him. But then, they hit him with a nightmare or some twisted memory in the middle of a date with a girl, or when he’s all alone.
On this particular night, Dante feels an itching. An itching to do something either very brave or very foolish. Looking at his surroundings, he sees a flickering and fading kitchen light, a stained and ugly carpet, his tv with a big black line down the center, and his shelf of shitty horror movies, all completely unorganized and haphazardly thrown about. All these things are the crucial pieces that makeup Dante's home, Omaha Park Apartments. Dante feels an itching, to leave the "comfort" of his dump of an apartment, in the lower end of the peaceful nighttime city of Omaha, drive a couple hours back to his roots, and prove that the Graves House is haunted.
This isn’t some random urge he is just now feeling, Dante has had the urge to go back and face the house several times over the years. Often times just to burn it to the ground, but with his newer "skills" at investigating the paranormal, he wishes to prove he isn't crazy once and for all. He wants to face his fears, and triumph over them, and leave them defeated and in the past. He ponders this quest for a few minutes on the couch, flipping through his YouTube subscriptions, deciding there isn't anything good to watch, and then pulling himself to his feet to get ready.
Blaring his music to wake himself up, he packs up his very small collection of things. Boxing up his movies, grabbing his 5 shirts, 5 pairs of boxers, his Converse and his Air Jordans, his last couple sodas from the fridge (Dante never drinks alcohol as it reminds him of his father), his ps4, tv, and leaves a note on his neighbor’s door that they can have whatever else they find in the apartment. He packs all these things into his beaten-up Kia Sorento as the slightly chilly August air rolls through the parking lot of his apartment building. He stops for a minute to take in the beauty of the city lights on a foggy night such as this.
Breathing in and releasing, he realizes he forgot something and jogs back to the building, up the three flights of stairs, and barges back into his apartment. Reaching into one of his kitchen cabinets, the one that gets stuck halfway through, he grabs his gun, a chrome snub-nosed .38 he stole from a client’s house once. He felt bad about it at first, but the guy had so many other guns in his house that Dante figured he wouldn't even notice. Why Dante wanted a gun was kind of tricky to pinpoint, he was never one to look for violence, but he just had a way of getting into bad situations, always arguing with people bigger than him, being rude to someone with more authority than him, and sooner or later these things catch up to you. Dante had been in several fights before, just small street fights where the most damage you’re going get is some missing teeth or a broken finger, but it’s in these interactions he realized how much more vulnerable he is than an athlete or even a construction worker. A gun simply made him know that if he talked trash to the wrong guy and ended up on the wrong side of a barrel, he would have his own equalizer.
Gathering up his shiny treasured bullets and putting them in his pocket and two of them into the gun itself he slammed the cabinet shut and walked out of his apartment for the last time. He took one last glance into the dark and filthy room, saying a mental goodbye to his uncomfortable couch, and quietly shutting the door, leaving his tracks mostly covered.
2
The drive back was a long one, he had punched out the clock in his car a long time ago after a particularly bad day with an unsatisfied customer (she swore she had sex with a ghost but Dante could do nothing but laugh) who refused to pay, but he judged it was about 4:00 in the morning seeing as the banks public clock was always off by a few minutes this late. The streets were also completely vacant, no other lights or company to keep on these lonely streets. Not at this hour, all you would see were truckers and the occasional night owls who hated the sun just as much as Dante.
To keep company, Dante would often talk to himself, sometimes responding to radio show drama aloud, or saying his opinions on the movies and songs he thought up in moments of boredom. He didn't really see anything wrong with it, in fact, he thought people who drive for hours making no noises, but an occasional cough or sneeze was awkward and unnatural. Looking at the other strangers in cars as he passed, he always thought they looked like such empty people, nothing but their routine on the mind, what a waste. But then again, Dante thought "I hunt imaginary ghosts for a living."
3
As the sun started to form just a small hue of purple and orange on the horizon, Dante started to notice familiar town names on road signs. He was getting close. Passing by a sign that read "Villisca, 18 Miles East", he chuckled to himself. Maybe someday I could check that place out. He pressed on, speeding his Kia and everything he owned with it, down the highway, inching every second closer to the house that changed his life.
With another half hour, Dante was passing through the peaceful town of Fontanelle, its citizens just starting their daily routines, he slowed down to take in the sights. The town hadn't changed much in the past eleven years since Dante had been gone. The Lutheran Church was no longer standing, the playground had a more modern metal and colorfully painted jungle gym now, to replace the old wooden one he played on as a boy. He stared at it with a slight touch of sadness, seeing it made to feel inadequate made him almost feel obsolete, he wrestled with feelings like this often. As he drove past it, he gave one passing nod towards it, acknowledging his past, but driving off to embrace his future. This was after all what he had come to do.
He waved at some of the truckers and farmers heading out in the early blue of a chilly August morning, them respectfully waving back. These were feelings he missed being away from in the city for so long. There’s a common misconception about small towns, that everybody knows everybody. This isn't true, not in Dante's eyes at least. More so, everybody RESPECTED everybody. Many of these folks hadn't seen Dante in years, let alone recognized him, but even with his scruffy and shaggy brown curls, his unshaven stubble, and his cheesy Hawaiian shirt, they all still gave him the benefit of the doubt. It gave him a warm feeling.
He got so caught up in these feelings and the early morning radio (Twilight Zone-Golden Earring), that he absent-mindedly drove out of town and in the direction of the neighboring town of Greenfield, a mere couple miles away. See the thing about Fontanelle, is that even though it’s just a couple miles long in every direction, its quadrupled in size by its neighbor, Greenfield. Once bitter sports rivals, they have both now combined to make two equally pleasant and warm feeling towns. Greenfield, however, dwarfs Fontanelle. Greenfield has the gas stations, Shopko (a Wal-Mart knockoff), Fareway (a grocery store), a swimming pool, the courthouse, a host of Churches (this was the Midwest after all), the High School and Elementary School side by side, while Fontanelle only has the Middle School.
All these things put together though, you got the beautiful little human congregation known as Nodaway Valley, welcoming the weary traveler known as Dante Graves back to his hometown, or towns if you prefer. Greenfield had not changed much at all, just like Fontanelle. This comforted and put Dante at ease, but he quickly remembers that his true opponent layout, beyond the city limits of Fontanelle, waiting, waiting eleven years for its favorite occupant to return.
4
The day passed by Dante in a flash. He ate his breakfast, lunch, and dinner all at three different local restaurants. Managed to tie down a place to live for the time being (he didn't know how long he would be staying for) at Greenfield Park Apartments, the cheap counterpart to his old cozy shithole. He even went for a walk, looking over his old stomping grounds, feelings those nostalgic feels, but as the sun slowly receded back into its natural resting place, he felt an ominous feeling. Knowing that that same exact sunset he was taking in right now, was also being watched by the Graves House. Alone. Waiting for the coming battle.
Dante loaded up his car right as the sun was just about to say goodnight. He packed his gun, a camera, some snacks he picked up from the local fancy gas station down the street from his apartment, a flashlight, and the most important thing of all, gasoline and matches. He thought about buying a lighter, too avoid the inevitable moment when he needed the matches the most and they were unavailable, but the fact of the matter is, lighters cost money, matches don't.
Driving back to Fontanelle was the most anxiety Dante had felt in years. His heart was racing, his blood pumping, sweat accumulating, hands death-gripping the steering wheel of his Kia as he roared it down the country roads. He saw that familiar red school house and turned left, onto the dirt road to his nemesis, the Graves House.

2020.01.07 17:54 Newyorkntilikina Is there an App that scouts best deals on grocery items?
For example, if I want to know which grocery store near me has the best deal on chicken breast, this app will look thru the weekly ad of walmart, target, hyvee, fareway, aldi etc... to scan the cheapest/best deal on chicken breast and show me which store it is.

2018.10.07 11:37 cudambercam13 Looking for simple smoothie recipes suitable for those with an ileostomy
With an ileostomy I've been told that it's easy to become dehydrated, easy to lack the nutrients you need, and some people have to be careful with things like nuts, seeds and fruit skins.
I live in a pretty small town, so we don't have a Whole Foods or much fruit and vegetable variety to choose from. I also don't have the money to buy a ton of expensive or exotic foods when I go someplace with more options, so I'm pretty worried that I won't have much to choose from if I choose to have an ileostomy done.
I live near a WalMart, Hy-Vee and Fareway, so if they don't have a certain product, I likely can't get it. I know that people often add vegetables to smoothies but knowing nothing about them, I have no idea what goes well with what, how to prepare it, or whether or not it would be good for someone with a new ileostomy.
Are there any recipes or websites specifically for people with ileostomies? I also could use some advice on those nutritional powders that can be added to drinks and what kind of equipment is best for smoothie making. (I'm one of those people who's never even used a blender...)
Any other dietary advice for having an ileostomy is appreciated too! I'm trying to learn everything I can to prepare before having the procedure done.

2015.04.20 04:02 esoper1976 MFP calorie frustration
O.k., so my roommate made chicken fried chicken from fareway tonight. It was a pre-prepared thing that came from the Fareway meat counter that she just reheated. I found one entry for it in MFP, and went with that, but something isn't adding up. First, they go by one 'patty' (112g) as a serving, and that serving has 260 calories. Not too bad. But, that same 112g serving has 162g of protein. Um, 162g of protein is WAY over 260 calories. Also, how can it have that much protein if it is only 112g total? It has 14g fat and 17g carbs. So, I'm pretty sure this entry is totally wrong. So, I turned to Google, to see if I could find the nutritional information on this, and came up empty. (one sent me to the fareway meat counter site, but that only gave information for raw meats. Another sent me to the MFP entry--which is clearly wrong). What do I do in this case? How can I figure out the real count?
