Back when I first started playing Fallout (3 specifically) during May of 2020, I was actually amazed. I had never played such a game before (the closest game to it being at the time TF2) and I loved the setting, the fun weapons, the variety of armor, the world, just everything appealed to me. I could sit the entire day just playing Fallout 3 because I loved it. Then I learned about the mod support and I began downloading dozens of mods that only extended the experience. After I had completed it, I decided to buy FNV which is the game that everyone seemed to love. I played it, and although I liked it less than FO3 (the open world and the depressing atmosphere appealed more to me than the roleplaying.) Point is, I enjoyed both of them a lot. I decided to replay FNV a couple of months later, but something was off. I didn't really care as much about playing, it just felt like I was walking around doing *things* just for the sake of doing them. I brushed that feeling off, and completed the game siding with House.
At this point, I had picked up rudimentary modding knowledge (usage, installation, and tweaking in xEdit that is, not making mods) and I decided to do a 3rd playthrough with around 170 mods. I was a complete idiot on deciding what mods to download and which mods I should not download so I just installed the generic EVE, Project Nevada, and other such buggy mods. I even made my own mod merges using automated tools. I couldn't go 10 minutes into the game without crashing and I spent most of my time screwing around in xEdit, only making things worse in retrospect. I wiped my modlist several times and ignoring the amount of time I poured into making them work, when I went into the game the exact same feeling beset me, but this time only stronger.
I felt disaffected and bored, I didn't care for the story or the characters, I had seen it all. There was nothing new or interesting to surprise me. No new cool weapons, no new cool armors, everything became generic. There was nothing to shock me. I left the game at around level 5 at Quarry Junction and decided that I should just come back later with a cleared mind. Around 2 - 3 months passed and I tried again, this time downloading various quest mods (i.e. Beyond Boulder Dome) but still I could barely pass level 10 when I left the game. This has happened 6 times overall. I tried restarting my playthroughs 6 times.
I learned of the existence of TTW and I was pretty excited since FO3 was, after all, my more preferred game (I did not play it because of the worse stability and mods.) I began a new playthrough with an okayish modlist and yet, despite me not playing FO3 in a year at that point, I got the same feeling as with FNV. I had seen it all. Moira wasn't exciting, I knew exactly what to expect and what she would say. The Enclave didn't excite me, I knew exactly who they were and what will go next in the story. I still somehow managed to play through level 30-ish and even after trying out a couple of quest mods (like Washington's Malevolence) I was still bored. I was confused. Wasn't new content what I was yearning? Apparently not.
I restarted the playthrough, this time in FNV. At that point (take a shot every time you see "At that/this point") I realized that I was planning ahead what I was going to do. First I was going to go to the Bison Steve, talk with X, take Y, go here, take that perk, take this choice, side with this character, etc etc. I have completely "optimized" my playthrough even before I got to any significant point in the story. I wanted to play "perfectly" by which I mean practically 100% it and get the best possible outcomes (IMO.) Always kill Caesar, always leave the BOS alive, always convince the Khans. I decided to force myself to play until the end at that I would force myself to like it. I didn't. I did finish the game, but I was so completely bored of it and saw my playthrough as "perfect" that any future deviation from it would be "bad." I loaded up an old save and decided to go with the Legion instead of Yes Men, killed everyone at Camp McCarran before even doing any quests and killed everyone at Camp Forlorn Hope. This felt bad not even because it was illogical and lazy (which I knew they were at the time) but because they wouldn't bring me to the "perfect" ending.
Throughout this entire journey I was juggling mods left and right. FPGE, NVB, The Collector, nothing worked. I tried eye candy like ENB (yes, seriously) texture mods, NVR, reanimation mods, GUN mods anything that would make the game look good, nada. I tried Just Assorted Mods, B42 Quickthrow, and BLEED, zero. I know this list is very small but believe me, there were many many more mods I tried at that time that I can't remember right now.
So, here we are. I tried the Wasteland Survival Guide for TTW in December of 2022 but the same problem appeared, I got bored and left the game in 10 minutes. No matter how polished or pretty it is, I just can't do it. There is no that magical wonder that I got when I first began playing. I tried FO4 because I thought that maybe I just milked FO3 and FNV of enjoyment but it didn't work mostly for other, unrelated reasons. Point is, I want to enjoy FO3/FNV but I can't. Is it even possible at this stage? I just can't comprehend what is the fundamental thing that is keeping me back.

This is entirely my take. It is not meant to be taken as a definite answer of that it is exactly what Araki intended, because he didn't (ok he did, for a few of the points you may have recognized them already) So, just a thought experiment, that is! Remember this please when reading this. This is just a thought experiment.
Also, I am referring to the original source - the manga.
Also I choose to only focus on a few characters and not go through EVERY character because it will make a wall of text (it already is).... You are welcome to add your own takes!
Imagine part 1-2 is being retold as a legend. First by Erina and Speedwagon (and then filtered down through Joseph and subsequent characters), and second by Joseph.
Retelling the story usually exaggerate what actually happened.
This is why the characters are impossibly bulky.
Part 1:
Jonathan is the hero of the story - big and impossibly bulky and stupidly strong, despite not having an stand! He's also handsome and gentle looking.
Dio is the villain of the story. He's still depicted as handsome, because that's what he is. But he's (comparatively) not depicted as ethereally beautiful (besides for some vampire panels). He's also bulky as child, on par with Jojo. This is because he beat Jojo down so he is giving the impression of being strong - hence beefed up.
Part 2:
Here it is retold by Joseph. He is recalling his own young self and it makes sense for his personality to exaggerate things to extremes, both for looks and for what actually happened.
His memories of Caesar and the pillar men is fading. So it may be exaggerated too there.
Part 3:
We are starting to become closer to "current time" so now the characters are how the people were seen by each other in the story.
Jotaro is incredibly much more beefy than his canon data (height and weight is telling that he's basically a bean stalk). This is because of how the other people saw him. He was big and scary! His chain is extremely large because people got the impression of that, it clashes with how a Japanese student should look like.
DIO is drawn as being very alluring, outright sexy, charismatic and big as a f-ing brick house. Because that's how people around him saw him. Big, sexy and dangerous.
(this below I know is not super accurate with the timing, but let's humor me)
At the end when DIO met the crusaders, he's suddenly looking somewhat ridiculous and goofy.
That's Jotaro's pov. Jotaro knows what DIO is, and who he was, what he has done. DIO's allure is not working on Jotaro. He's still handsome and scary though. Thats' why DIO looks ridiculous at the end with his outfit.
Maybe the crusaders even messed up the memory of Dio with his stand The World, and hence mixing up details among those two? DIO didn't appear too often in clear view too.
Part 4:
Josuke and later, Okuyasu are introduced. They look like giants, and very scary, very much delinquent! That's how Koichi saw them.
Then later them they shrunk down to normal sizes and became much more goofier. They are friends to Koichi then!
Koichi's size, well this one we all know already. He's shorter than his canon data.
Then we got the antagonists Hazamada and Kobayashi for example. They shrunk in size after their defeats as their status got lowered.
Jotaro has become a little more lean compared with his part 3 looks. He's more mild mannered now and more measured in attitude. He has grown up. But he's still large because he's a mentor figure.
Part 5. (almost skipping this one)
(ok maybe Jotaro is small here because he has been retold by Koichi's imagination and he imagined him as younger looking?) Weak take here.
Oh right, Doppio and Diavolo! Their sizes also matches with their demeanor. Big scary Boss and goofy Doppio.

Jotaro seems to be at his most realistic size here, both in "current" age and flashback?
DIO is interesting here.
Here he suddenly is more lean looking and even smaller somehow. He's softer looking.
To Pucci DIO is like an angel, so he took more of that form, and he's smaller because to Pucci DIO isn't super mega scary. Pucci wasn't intimidated by DIO so that's why he's got a softer appearance.

The past was more insular, thanks to a lack of internet. If you wanted to see video of using the Paris Metro or see the sights in Sydney, your only chance was if a travel show happened to have it on TV. Now you're spoiled for choice but back in the late 20th century, all your media choices were given by your local selection of radio and TV stations. Your chances of being an average person outside a huge city and talking to someone on a different continent were close to zero.
As the internet has become essential to people's lives and talking to people across the world is now common and mundane, the retelling of history becomes altered. Tunes that may have been released in the 80s that weren't a part of your life at all are now in memes, and films set in the 80s will include them in the soundtrack - even if the film happens in a location where that song or artist received little to no publicity at all.
EXAMPLES. All three here are firmly part of The '80s trope.
In The Wedding Singer, set in 1985 New Jersey with the interactions of American twenty-somethings that would have little interest in a band from Manchester, England with two albums that failed to crack the Top 100 (so: not songs popular enough for a wedding singer or his backing band to have in his repertoire), it's unlikely that "How Soon Is Now?" by The Smiths would warrant being on Robbie Hart's radar. The song did get as high as #36 on the US Billboard Dance charts, but the characters in the film were more rock-centered. "Can't Fight This Feeling" by REO Speedwagon, "Glory Days" by Bruce Springsteen, or "Small Town" by John Mellencamp would have been likely but "How Soon Is Now?"...? British acts were playing, there was an influx of UK acts as part of the second British Invasion but they were mainstream musical acts or artists with great music videos that MTV snapped up because music videos were in short supply from American acts but British acts had been making them for years (primarily to show on the chart show Top Of The Pops on BBC1 if the band was not available for a live performance).
In Wonder Woman 1984, Diane Prince and Barbara walk into a gala held at the Smithsonian Museum to the sounds of "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" by Liverpool band Frankie Goes To Hollywood. It can't be stressed how much this song would not be playing in a fundraising gala in Washington, D.C. in 1984. The album it came on was released in Britain on 29 October 1984 but this song didn't come out as a single until the spring of 1985. The LP sold well enough in the US, but the band themselves were extremely gay scene and would not have been appreciated at such a swanky event in Reagan-era America (a previous song, "Two Tribes", featured a no-holds-barred fight between Ronald Reagan and Konstantin Chernenko of the Soviet Union in the video - every Republican would have pulled their funding for the Smithsonian on hearing this suggestive gay music playing and learning of who the band were).
BumbleBee takes place in a small California beach town in 1987. Directed by British screenwriter Christina Hodson, it contains a lot of British music. Some would be believably known as part pf that Second British Invasion but others are less believable. "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley is on one tape that Charlie Watson has in her collection in 1987. Rick Astley was part of a (mostly) British stable of artists signed to Stock Aitken & Waterman. They churned out pop hits consisting of more than 100 UK top 40 hits, selling 40 million records, and earning an estimated £60 million (about $104 million) in the process. The sound took Chicago's sound of House Music (already big in European clubs) and sanitized it. It didn't make it to the top of the US charts until the spring of 1988 after gaining slow traction after being played a lot by resident DJ Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage in NYC (also known as "the Garage" or the "Gay-rage"). Having it make its way to a small-town 18 year-old California straight girl's tape collection in 1987 is unlikely but in the hands of a British director that was 27 years-old when it was everywhere in her life, sliding it into a film where the audience would know the song from Rick-rolling, works. Charlie in the film is also a huge fan of The Smiths and introduces BumbleBee to the album "Strangeways Here We Come" (which she says is brand new) - it only got to #55 on the US Billboard 200 but was a #2 LP in Britain.
I think there could be grounds to make it a separate TVTropes entry because of the revisionist history element of it. I could imagine films of the 1980s and 1990s set in the US featuring house music tracks that wouldn't have had any mainstream play in America like Stakker Humanoid if there was transatlantic input. Or maybe it’s just that The Smiths have become more popular, like with Kate Bush.

Life expectancy continues to decline in the U.S. as it rebounds in other countries.
Just before Christmas, federal health officials confirmed life expectancy in America had dropped for a nearly unprecedented second year in a row – down to 76 years. While countries all over the world saw life expectancy rebound during the second year of the pandemic after the arrival of vaccines, the U.S. did not.
Then, last week, more bad news: Maternal mortality in the U.S. reached a high in 2021. Also, a paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association found rising mortality rates among U.S. children and adolescents.
"This is the first time in my career that I've ever seen [an increase in pediatric mortality] – it's always been declining in the United States for as long as I can remember," says the JAMA paper's lead author Steven Woolf, director emeritus of the Center on Society and Health at Virginia Commonwealth University. "Now, it's increasing at a magnitude that has not occurred at least for half a century."
Across the lifespan, and across every demographic group, Americans die at younger ages than their counterparts in other wealthy nations.
How could this happen? In a country that prides itself on scientific excellence and innovation, and spends an incredible amount of money on health care, the population keeps dying at younger and younger ages.
An unheard alarm
One group of people are not surprised at all: Woolf and the other researchers involved in a landmark, 400-page study ten years ago with a name that says it all: "Shorter Lives, Poorer Health." The research by a panel convened by the National Academy of Sciences and funded by the National Institutes of Health compared U.S. health and death with other developed countries. The results showed – convincingly – that the U.S. was stalling on health advances in the population while other countries raced ahead.
The authors tried to sound an alarm, but found few in the public or government or private sectors were willing to listen. In the years since, the trends have worsened. American life expectancy is lower than that of Cuba, Lebanon, and Czechia.
Ten years later, here's a look back at what that eye-popping study found, and why the researchers involved believe it's not too late to turn the trends around.
Beyond bad habits
Americans are used to hearing about how their poor diets and sedentary lifestyles make their health bad. It can seem easy to brush that off as another scold about eating more vegetables and getting more exercise. But the picture painted in the "Shorter Lives" report could shock even those who feel like they know the story.
"American children are less likely to live to age 5 than children in other high-income countries," the authors write on the second page. It goes on: "Even Americans with healthy behaviors, for example, those who are not obese or do not smoke, appear to have higher disease rates than their peers in other countries."
The researchers catalog what they call the "U.S. health disadvantage" – the fact that living in America is worse for your health and makes you more likely to die younger than if you lived in another rich country like the U.K., Switzerland or Japan.
"We went into this with an open mind as to why it is that the U.S. had a shorter life expectancy than people in other countries," says Woolf, who chaired the committee that produced the report. After looking across different age and racial and economic and geographic groups, he says, "what we found was that this problem existed in almost every category we looked at."
That's why, says Eileen Crimmins, professor of gerontology at the University of Southern California who was also on the panel that produced the report, they made a deliberate choice to focus on the health of the U.S. population as a whole.
"That was a decision – not to emphasize the differences in our population, because there is data that actually shows that even the top proportion of the U.S. population does worse than the top proportion of other populations," she explains. "We were trying to just say – look, this is an American problem."
Digging into the 'why'
The researchers were charged with documenting how Americans have more diseases and die younger and to explore the reasons why.
"We were very systematic and thorough about how we thought about this," says Woolf. The panel looked at American life and death in terms of the public health and medical care system, individual behaviors like diet and tobacco use, social factors like poverty and inequality, the physical environment, and public policies and values. "In every one of those five buckets, we found problems that distinguish the United States from other countries."
Yes, Americans eat more calories and lack universal access to health care. But there's also higher child poverty, racial segregation, social isolation, and more. Even the way cities are designed makes access to good food more difficult.
"Everybody has a pet thing they worry about and say, 'it's oral health' or 'it's suicides' – everyone has something that they're legitimately interested in and want to see more attention to," says John Haaga, who was the director of the Division of Behavioral and Social Research at the National Institute on Aging at NIH, before he retired. "The great value of an exercise like this one was to step back and say, 'OK, all of these things are going on, but which of them best account for these long-term population level trends that we're seeing?' "
The answer is varied. A big part of the difference between life and death in the U.S. and its peer countries is people dying or being killed before age 50. The "Shorter Lives" report specifically points to factors like teen pregnancy, drug overdoses, HIV, fatal car crashes, injuries, and violence.
"Two years difference in life expectancy probably comes from the fact that firearms are so available in the United States," Crimmins says. "There's the opioid epidemic, which is clearly ours – that was our drug companies and other countries didn't have that because those drugs were more controlled. Some of the difference comes from the fact that we are more likely to drive more miles. We have more cars," and ultimately, more fatal crashes.
"When we were doing it, we were joking we should call it 'Live free and die,' based on the New Hampshire slogan, ['Live free or die']," Crimmins says. "The National Academy of Sciences said, 'That's outrageous, that's too provocative.' "
There are some things Americans get right, according to the "Shorter Lives" report: "The United States has higher survival after age 75 than do peer countries, and it has higher rates of cancer screening and survival, better control of blood pressure and cholesterol levels, lower stroke mortality, lower rates of current smoking, and higher average household income." But those achievements, it's clear, aren't enough to offset the other problems that befall many Americans at younger ages.
All of this costs the country tremendously. Not only do families lose loved ones too soon, but having a sicker population costs the country as much as $100 billion every year in extra health care costs.
"Behind the statistics detailed in this report are the faces of young people – infants, children, and adolescents – who are unwell and dying early because conditions in this country are not as favorable as those in other countries," the paper's authors wrote.
Little action, despite the stakes
"Shorter Lives" is filled with recommended next steps for the government, especially the NIH, which has a budget of more than $40 billion annually to conduct research to improve Americans' health.
The NIH should undertake a "thorough examination of the policies and approaches that countries with better health outcomes have found useful and that may have application, with adaptations, in the United States," the authors wrote.
In other words: let's figure out what they are doing that works in other places, and do it over here.
Dr. Ravi Sawhney, who helped conceive of and launch the "Shorter Lives" study at NIH before he left the agency, had high hopes that the report would make a mark. "I really thought that when the results came out, they would be so obvious that people would say: Let's finally do this," he says.
Ten years on, how much of the detailed action plan has been done?
"To be brief, very little of that happened," Woolf says. At the time, he says, NIH officials didn't seem very interested in raising awareness about the panel's findings or in following up on its proposed research agenda. "There was some media coverage at the time that the report rolled out, but NIH was not involved in trying to promote awareness about the report."
Crimmins agrees. "There was a little bit more research, but there wasn't any policy reaction," she says. "I thought there might be, because it's embarrassing, but it just tends to be ignored." Those who are interested in this issue, she notes, tend to be those invested in "marvelous things they think are going to delay aging," even though people older than 75 are the only age group in the country that already does comparatively well.
Haaga, the former NIH division director, also thinks the response at the agency was lacking. "Not nearly enough has been done, given the stakes and given what we could learn," he says.
In response to NPR's request for comment for this story, NIH pointed to a subsequent panel on midlife mortality, several initiatives the agency has undertaken on disparities between subgroups within the U.S., and a recent paper funded by NIH that looked again at international life expectancy.
Outgoing NIH Director Francis Collins told NPR in 2021 that it bothered him that there hadn't been more gains to American life expectancy during his tenure. In his view, the success of NIH in achieving scientific breakthroughs hadn't translated to more gains because of problems in society that the research agency had little power to change.
Woolf calls it a misconception to assume that America's great scientific minds and medical discoveries translate to progress for the health of the population. "We are actually very innovative in making these kinds of breakthroughs, but we do very poorly in providing them to our population," he says.
'We can't touch everything'
Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra answered NPR's question at a press conference earlier this month about work the agency was doing to address lagging life expectancy by mentioning COVID-19 and vaccine hesitancy, along with mental health issues and gun violence.
"There's so many things that we're doing," Becerra said. "We can't touch everything. We can't touch state laws that allow an individual to buy an assault weapon and then kill so many people. We can only come in afterwards."
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky responded by listing some of the agency's work on mental health and vaccines, and acting NIH director Larry Tabak pointed to research on health disparities.
HHS did not answer a follow up question about whether the agency has considered a national commission or similar effort to address American life expectancy and poor health.
Sawhney thinks the federal government should try harder to fix the problems documented in the "Shorter Lives" report. He doesn't think lack of public awareness is the problem. "I really think that most Americans know that Americans are more overweight and obese and that we have higher rates of disease and live shorter lives than other countries," he says, "It's just the NIH and the CDC that don't want to take the responsibility for that failure or to do anything about it."
Crimmins says, in her experience, lawmakers and federal health officials don't like talking about how the U.S. is lagging behind other countries.
"I convened a meeting in Washington with the National Center for Health Statistics [part of CDC] about increasing healthy life expectancy," she recalls. "It was a relatively small meeting, but we brought experts from Canada." An official at the time gave what she calls a "typical" response, saying: "Oh, we can't have anything but an American solution to these issues – we can't listen to other countries."
"International studies are not the flavor of the month – they never will be," says Haaga. "The problem with foreign countries is that they're not in someone's congressional district."
It's more than a missed opportunity, says Woolf. It's a tragedy.
"If you add up the excess deaths that have occurred in the United States because of this unfolding problem, it dwarfs what happened during COVID-19, as horrible as COVID-19 was," Woolf says. "We've lost many more Americans cumulatively because of this longer systemic issue. And if the systemic issue is unaddressed, it will continue to claim lives going forward."
Small victories are possible
Taking stock of the many ways in which Americans are sicker and die younger can be overwhelming, says Haaga. "It's such a long list, that might partly be why the issue doesn't grab people," he says. "They just go, 'Oh, my gosh, that's depressing, what's on the other channel?' But there's a lot of things that could be done, and small victories are victories."
According to the "Shorter Lives" report, "the important point about the U.S. health disadvantage is not that the United States is losing a competition with other countries, but that Americans are dying and suffering at rates that are demonstrably unnecessary."
Rather than feel overwhelmed at the immensity of the problems, Sawhney suggests, the focus should instead be on the fact that every other rich country has been able to figure out how to help people live longer, healthier lives. That means that Americans could do it too, he says.
He believes that the changes might not be as hard as some policymakers and health officials seem to think. "You look at these healthier countries, they're free countries – England, France, Italy – they're not banning delicious foods. They're not chaining people to treadmills," he says. "Americans love to travel to Europe, to Australia, to Canada to enjoy their foods and their lifestyles, and so the idea that we might say, 'Hey, maybe we could bring some of those lifestyles back' – I don't think people are going to go up in arms that we're taking away their freedoms."
Getting policy ideas from other countries is just an obvious move, Woolf adds. "If a martian came down to earth and saw this situation, it would be very intuitive that you [would] look at other countries that have been able to solve this problem and apply the lessons learned," he says.
In historical research he's been doing, "I found that there are dozens and dozens of countries on almost every continent of the world that have outperformed the United States for 50 years," he says. "It's worth taking a look at what they've done and Americanizing it – you don't have to take it right off the shelf."
Some of the policies he's identified as helpful include universal, better coordinated health care, strong health and safety protections, broad access to education, and more investments to help kids get off to a healthy start. These policies are "paying off for them," he says, and could for Americans, too.

On the day of the assassination, around 11:30 A.M., Jack Ruby went to the second-floor advertising offices of the Dallas Morning News to place the regular weekend ads for his nightclubs. He approached the desk of advertising salesman John Newnam. Their business was completed in short order, but Ruby elected to stay despite still having enough time to make it to Dealey Plaza and watch the motorcade and the President pass by. During his polygraph hearing in 1964, Ruby raised the point: "Oh yes, they didn't ask me another question: 'If I loved the President so much, why wasn't I at the parade.?'"
When members of the Warren Commission, including Earl Warren, traveled to Dallas to interview Ruby in 1964, he said: "Chief Earl Warren, had you been around 5 or 6 months ago... immediately the President [Johnson] would have gotten a hold of my true story... a certain organization wouldn't have so completely formed now, so powerfully, to use me…to commit the most dastardly crime that has ever been committed…Consequently, a whole new form of government is going to take over our country." "I am used as a scapegoat," Ruby continued, in "...the killing of President Kennedy."
An FBI report described that "Ruby was on the second floor, front of the Dallas Morning News Building which looks out at the TSBD [Texas School Book Depository] Building....Georgia Mayor, secretary in the Advertising Division, Dallas Morning News, advised that when she returned from lunch at approximately 12:30 p.m., Jack Ruby was sitting in a chair directly in front of her desk. She believes that Jack Ruby had been looking out at the scene when the President was shot...."
"Now, what about my being present in the News Building that morning," Ruby asked Earl Warren. "Here - the assassination took place across the street from there...if I was in a conspiracy, wouldn't it start off with that point?" It did not take long for news to reach the second floor of the Dallas Morning News. Ruby was described as "shaken and an ashen color - just very pale... and sat for a long while with a dazed expression in his eyes." Eventually, he found his way back to the desk of John Newnam. "I will have to leave Dallas," Ruby told him. Most likely, panic was starting to grip him. He used the phone on Newnam's desk to call his sister Eva Grant. She was crying and Ruby handed Newnam the phone so he could hear her grief. Newnam listened long enough to hear her say, in response to something Ruby had said, "My God, what do they want?"
Ruby returned to the Carousel Club around 1:40 P.M. Those who saw him also recalled he appeared distressed. He phoned another sister, Eileen Kaminsky, and said he was considering flying to Chicago to be with her, once again showing he considered leaving town. At 2:37 P.M., less than an hour after the arrest of Oswald, Ruby called mobster Alex Gruber in Los Angeles. Gruber told the Warren Commission that when the assassination came up, Ruby broke down. If true, he recovered quickly. Two minutes after hanging up with Gruber he called his mob-connected friend Ralph Paul.
Around 3:15 P.M., Ruby drove to his sister Eva's apartment. "I would never conceive of anybody in his right mind that would want this President hurt," she told her brother. He responded by vomiting in the bathroom. She later told the Warren Commission that her brother looked "broken, a broken man already. Jack Ruby, the small-time thug who was known to pistol whip patrons, was an emotional wreck.
That night there was an impromptu press conference. Jack Ruby stood on a table at the rear of the room as Oswald was brought out handcuffed He stood frightened in front of a sea of reporters like a lamb being led to slaughter. He answered a few questions and stated he did not shoot anyone, but when a reporter shouted out that he had been charged with the murder of JFK, Oswald appeared to almost collapse.
There was a noticeable change in Jack Ruby after the press conference. Reporter Seth Kantor wrote: "Ruby no longer was the grim, crying, beaten man he had appeared to be earlier on Friday. Ruby became animated…he began shaking hands with out-of-town reporters, handing them 'Jack Ruby Your Host at the Carousel' calling cards and urging them to come by for drinks and a show when the club reopened."
The reason for the change in Ruby was clear. The press conference demonstrated that Oswald had said little, and investigators already considered him a lone assassin. In short, there was nothing for Jack Ruby or any of the real conspirators to be afraid of, and Ruby received a glimmer of hope that he might escape the weekend unscathed, but it was not to be – Oswald had to be eliminated.
Jack Ruby was a frightened man when members of the Warren Commission came to Dallas in 1964 to interview him. "Gentlemen, my life is in danger here. Not with my guilty plea of execution. Do I sound sober enough to you as I say this," he asked? He pleaded with Earl Warren to take him back to Washington where he could tell "the truth of everything and why my act was committed, but it can't be said here." He asked Warren, "If you felt that your life was in danger at the moment, how would you feel? Wouldn't you be reluctant to go on speaking...?"
Ruby continued, "There is an organization here, Chief Justice Warren, if it takes my life at this moment to say it, and [Sheriff] Bill Decker said be a man and say it, there is a John Birch Society right now in activity, and [General] Edwin Walker is one of the top men of this organization.... Unfortunately for me, for me giving the people the opportunity to get in power, because of the act I committed, has put a lot of people in jeopardy with their lives."
Once again, he told the Warren Commission he was part of the plot, but they didn't respond. Frustrated, Ruby asked Warren, "Don't register with you, does it? Would you rather I just delete what I said and just pretend that nothing is going on?" Mockingly he told them, "I am as innocent regarding any conspiracy as any of you gentlemen in the room, and I don't want anything to be run over lightly. I want you to dig into it with any biting, any question that might embarrass me, or anything that might bring up my background...."
Ruby repeatedly gave Warren and the others clues regarding his involvement in the assassination. Regarding his supposed emotional state after JFK’s death, he stated, "I must be a great actor, I tell you that. Now it is the most fantastic story you have ever heard in a lifetime. I did something out of the goodness of my heart."
Ruby's testimony showed he believed the assassination was a coup d’etat.
In a subsequent television interview, he elaborated that "everything pertaining to what's happened has never come to the surface. The world will never know the true facts of what occurred - my motive, in other words. I am the only person in the background to know the truth pertaining to everything relating to my circumstances." When asked if the truth would ever come out, Ruby replied, "No. Because unfortunately these people, who have so much to gain and have such an ulterior motive to put me in the position I'm in will never let the true facts come aboveboard to the world."
The failure of the Warren Commission to respond to Jack Ruby's obvious desire to tell the truth was one of the most upsetting aspects of what transpired after the assassination.
