2023.03.22 14:31 subjective_r3ality I cannot figure out my MBTI.

I apologize for the long text in advance.
I’m relatively new to MBTI and have taken multiple tests to try to figure out my type. My first ones on 16personalities I received INTJ, INTP, and ISTJ. When I took the Sakinorva test, I got the results below. I’m not sure how to interpret the Sakrinova results. I’m wondering if someone could type me - I’ll include general information about myself.
I’m not social at all around anyone but about two people. With these two people I still mostly listen to what they have to say instead of actually participating in the conversation. I can communicate when I need to, but I would prefer not to. When I do talk a lot, it’s usually about something that I believe in or find fascinating. I love watching debates, but when it comes to actually having one, I have trouble articulating my thoughts in a cohesive enough manner to guarantee winning.
I love being alone, but occasionally I do enjoy the company of one of the two people I mentioned above. I find it very hard to make new friends, and I have been told by multiple different people that I come off as very cold, distant, and intimidating. I am a pretty nice person, but when I communicate with people I’m not familiar with I can be pretty blunt and straight to the point to end the conversation faster. I am very good at sniffing out when people are lying to me almost immediately, and I despise liars and people who act fake. I don’t trust a lot of people and usually take things with a grain of salt.
I love reading, writing, rock and classical music, and learning new things. The issue is that I have issues being productive all the time - as in I start many of my own projects outside of school but am not able to finish a lot of them, whether it’s due to lack of time or lack of motivation.
I have a lot of deadlines for myself, and always strive to be the best I can be. I am constantly studying things that interest me, and even though others around me constantly let me know that I am intelligent, I never feel as though it’s enough.
I also have trouble understanding what I’m feeling at any given time. I usually either feel pretty much nothing, or I feel emotions in the extremes. Once every so often I’ll have a sort of small mental breakdown and go through all of the processing in about an hour’s time. I never allow myself to make decisions when I’m emotional, and I always take a long time to make an important decision to make sure I know what I want to do (although I always end up second-guessing myself). I value my head over my heart. I also only really allow myself to express my full range of feeling in my own company.
I’m not sure if this is helpful, but I’ll include it anyway - I have a hard time focusing in loud environments or when the lights are too bright around me.

A few timepaws after professor Baslik left my school things returned to normal. I settled into my office and prepared to start my first task on the list, tackling my overflowing inbox. With my mail client opened, I began scrolling through the endless stream of messages. Most of them were routine: reminders, updates, and requests for meetings. But one particular letter caught my eye, standing out amidst the sea of text.
I looked at the email and saw the sender's name, Sirkal (of Kadu from Kleran). It was someone from this town and the host of her mailing address showed why I have never heard of her before. The letter came from the University of Charok, the same institution where Professor Baslik taught. It is not that odd, really. Kleran and Charok are located next to each other. It's not that unthinkable for someone who was born here to move there. The reverse is also true. I remember that the parents of some of my students are from Charok.
"Dear Vichak,
My name is Sirkal of Kadu from Kleran, and I am a legal overseer assigned to the Department of Social Science at the University of Charok. I am writing to you regarding Professor Baslik's recent visit to your school."
As a legal overseer, I have been entrusted with the responsibility to manage a legal challenge that might arise from his visit. I also would like to follow up with you on some important matters related to your institution.
I believe that it is in your best interest to reply to this letter at your earliest convenience to schedule a meeting and I will be able to synchronize with your cycle. Your prompt response will allow us to address these matters effectively and efficiently.
With Respect
Sirkal"
The letter from Sirkal and her request for discussion about legal matters made me feel a bit apprehensive. I see how being involved with Professor Baslik, even indirectly, could potentially be controversial. So I did need to tread carefully to avoid any missteps. The fact that Sirkal's mail server was the same as Baslik's is quite reassuring. I'm not an informatics expert, but I think it would be difficult to spoof such a thing.
It was likely that Sirkal was indeed who she claimed to be.
Still, as a responsible educator, It was important to do my due diligence before responding to Sirkal's request. I spent some time conducting an online search, looking for more information about her and her background. As I sifted through the search results, I found several pages hosted by her workplace, as well as her personal page. What I discovered was a woman who was much more than just a legal staff member at the University of Charok. Sirkal also worked as a pro bono advocate, offering her legal services to clients who might not otherwise be able to afford them.
That kind of dedication gave me confidence in her character. So I finally wrote my response to her.
"Hi Sirkal
My school operates in Shift Minus One. I am available for half a claw during the middle of my timepaw. Let me know a suitable date for our meeting.
Regards, Vichak"
Despite people living in their own shifts, we do need a standardized way. The government of the entire planet works in the same shift and they work in what's known as "Shift Zero". The four others are Minus Two, Minus One, Plus One, and Plus Two.
I was about to read another email when my intercom chimed in with a request for a call. Having ascertained that I am awake, the advocate switched to voice call.
"Do you have an agenda on the between 1 to 1.5 claws from now? If not, allow me to visit you." her email read.
The timeframe she had given me was during my mid-meal break, which I usually spent in my office eating. I wasn't sure what Sirkal wanted to discuss. I really, really hope this won't end with me getting bogged down with workplace politics at the University of Charok.
"I mean… I am free, but are you going to visit soon?" I said, hoping for a bit more information.
"Thank you for confirming your schedule. I shall be going." She said before ending the call.
At the designated break time one claw later, I was about to enjoy a meal that my mother and I had made earlier that day. Just as I was about to take my first bite, the school's security guard contacted me through the intercom.
"Ma'am, someone named Sirkal is at the gate right now," the guard said.
"Let her in," I instructed the guard. "I'll meet her at my office."
I took the first bite of the Döner Kebab and I wondered just what she was here for. When Sirkal appeared in my office the advocate sat before I even had the chance to allow her. The woman has dark fur with a shocking white stripe extending from behind her eyes down to her back. It was a pattern that I had never seen before, and I wonder if it was natural or a result of some kind of dye.
"Thank you for giving me the time and place for us to talk," Sirkal began, looking at my lunch box. "Do not let my presence hinder the enjoyment of your meal." Her body language was minimal, and her gestures were subtle, but there was a sense of intensity in the way she composed herself. I couldn't help but wonder if, like Vani and Baslik, there was something "wired wrong" in her head.
Not "wrong", I chastised myself, but "differently".
I extended a gesture of hospitality to Sirkal. "Do you want something to eat or drink? I can order one from the cafeteria." I asked.
"Cold water suffices," she replied. "The wrap you have there has a peculiar form and texture. May I inquire as to what those things are?"
I chuckled slightly at her curiosity. "Oh, this? This is a human dish called Döner Kebab. I've heard that it used to use flesh, but they have plant-based variations now."
Her eyes bulged slightly. There was a barely restrained desire in her gaze as if she was fascinated by the idea of consuming human food. But before I could get further into this topic, Sirkal spoke again.
"I have heard from Baslik about your adventure to the capital," she said.
"I did… yeah. Hey, do you want half of mine?" I pushed my lunchbox toward the advocate, offering her a share of my Döner Kebab.
Sirkal hesitated for a moment but then gestured with gratitude. "Along with this cold water, how much do you sell this for?" she asked, rummaging through her satchel.
"Uh... free?" I replied, a bit taken aback by the question. The advocate had taken a cash card, but she put it back again.
"Thank you," she said, taking one of the kebab wraps.
"Oh yeah, let me get you your drink," I got off and made my way to my bar to pour her a glass of water.
"So, what brought you here?" I asked, finally getting down to the business.
"As per my letter, my colleague Baslik visited your school yesterday, and I have a moral obligation to visit," she said, her voice almost as flat as Vani's.
"How well do you know Professor Baslik?" I asked, placing the glass of water on the table and pushing it toward her.
"I am the reason Baslik is still teaching at our university," she replied. "People he works with tend to get caught in the crossfire, which is why I am here."
Her words left me with more questions than answers, but before I could ask any more, Sirkal pulled out a pad and requested to add her contact information to my device. I accepted her request and watched as her details were added to my contacts.
"We, the crosswired, need to stick together," Sirkal said, looking up at me with a hint of intensity in her gaze. "I'm offering you my service free of charge."
I raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Crosswired? Is that what you call yourself?"
Sirkal nodded, "Yes, though the human term 'neurodivergent' is gaining popularity too. I know you're used to people like me," While I wondered if she meant my students or my brother on Earth, I realized that she stared crossed-eyed with her snout pointing at me.
My brother then.
"I see. I did notice that Baslik has no fear toward humans."
"He's devoid of feeling," Sirkal continued. "Fortunately, his parents instilled altruism in him."
I couldn't help but think of the recently expelled student, Radaktil, as she mentioned.
"I know about your brother," Sirkal continued. "He is blessed to have a sister like you."
Her monotonous words felt like a warm embrace, and I felt a sense of gratitude toward this stranger. "Oh, I can't hog all the compliments," I said, smiling. "My mother also supported Vani throughout his life. How about you?"
Sirkal continued to eat the kebab, savoring each bite as she stared at me intently. "This human food tastes very delightful," she remarked between bites. "Thank you for introducing me to their cuisine."
It was obvious to me that she was avoiding answering my question.
"I'm sorry for asking that," I said, sensing that I had touched on a sensitive topic. "It must have been terrible."
Sirkal seemed to relax a bit at my apology. "In case I am being recorded, I do not consent," she said, pausing to take another bite of the kebab before continuing. "It has been said that I survived the Correctional Facility. Of course, if you search for my public record, you will find that there is no mention of me being committed to such a place."
I sensed the unspoken implication in her words and felt a bit sad for her. The thought of anyone having to endure the Correctional Facility made me dread it, and for now… I wondered again if I had done the right thing with Radaktil.
"How much do you know about my school?" I asked.
"Your institution has a reputation," Sirkal replied. "I could have had a more comfortable life had something like yours existed in my time. I am personally invested in ensuring your school's continuation."
I felt a sense of relief at her words. "Regardless... sometimes we're way over our heads," I added, as the recent incident with the violent student was still heavy on my mind.
"Please elaborate," Sirkal said, her gaze intense as she leaned in closer to me.
"Sirkal, there was a violent student of mine that I might have condemned to a correctional facility," I admitted, feeling a sense of guilt and shame wash over me as I spoke.
"How violent?" Sirkal asked, her gesture twitching slightly as she spoke.
"He assaulted several students, but we only caught him after we installed a hidden camera. Mind you, the student he caught assaulting was crosswired too," I felt a lump form in my throat as I spoke.
Sirkal stared at me for a moment, as if judging me for my character. She took a final large bite of the kebab before continuing. "Our system is built in such a way that sometimes things like this are unavoidable," she said finally. "I understand in a way that does not condone nor condemn."
"Do you think I should do something different?" I asked Sirkal, hoping for some guidance and reassurance.
"That question is your burden to bear, Vichak," Sirkal replied. "I am here to provide you with legal services to protect your school and your students. But making you feel better about your decision is not in my job description."
When she finished, I heard a chime from my office's sound system, signaling the arrival of a new notification. Checking my desk, I realized that I had received a letter from an advocate on behalf of Kiyat. It took me a while before I realized that Kiyat was Radaktil's mother.
"I believe I need your services, Sirkal,"
Sirkal nodded. She chugged the glass of cold water until it was drained empty before taking out her pad from her satchel and turning its screen on.

The next day, after spending a restful night in Dieng, we departed early in the morning for the city of Wonosobo. We needed to restock our supplies and perform maintenance on the Van. Once we had everything dealt with, we continued our journey towards the City of Yogyakarta, but not before we made a detour to a temple called Borobudur.
We approached the temple after we paid the entrance fee. With a clear grassy field surrounding the temple, it looked more like a monumental mound than a place of worship. The details of intricate carvings on its walls became more visible as we came closer. However, we were only allowed to go as far as the fence that surrounded the temple, which was about ten meters from the base. As we stood there, taking in the sight of the temple I wished that we could get closer.
"So… I presume we are not allowed to get in?"
"Back then tourists were allowed to get in and they wore down the stone of the temple. Nowadays they only let religious leaders or scholars in."
Curious about the temple's origins I asked. "Is this a Hindu temple too?"
"Oh, this one is a-" Johan paused. "I have a feeling we might be allowed to enter."
I looked in the direction Johan was looking, and a furless human approached us, they were clad in what I remember as formal clothing.
"Hi. I'm Sudarmo. Do you want to see the Borobudur up close?" My translator was still in subtitle mode and there was no hint of gender in the text. But I think he was a man. Sudarmo has no single fur on top of his head, just like Johan. But he still had fur above his eyes, unlike Stawa.
"But do you not restrict access to scholars?" I asked him.
"Aren't we all scholars?" He said with a smile, the micro gestures on his face implied that he wanted me to get into this tour.
"I suppose you have a point," I said, returning his smile. "Lead the way.
The man led us along the fence, through the crowds of tourists, who stared at us. I guess they are envious that they were not given the same opportunity that we had. Approaching the gate in the fence, I noticed that it was not particularly tall and a human could easily jump over it. However, there seemed to be a sense of respect and decency that prevented them from doing so. I wondered if there were mechanisms in place to detect and prevent unauthorized access.
Sudarmo placed one of his fingers on a sensor on the gate, and after a beep, he pushed it open. A set of stairs on every four sides of the temple allowed us to climb upward. We walked to the one nearest to us, and when we reached the bottom of the stairs the function of a shelf near one of the stairs became clear. Sudarmo removed his feet covering and stored it on the shelf.
"I need you to remove your shoes as well." The tour guide ordered.
"Is this a purity thing, or do you want to reduce the tear and wear on the stone?" I asked.
"A bit of both, but mostly the latter." Said Sudarmo.
The tour guide explained that the Borobudur is slightly younger than the temples in Dieng, but not by much. The temple was somewhat "lost" until it was found in the nineteenth century and restored.
"What deities are venerated in this temple?" I asked, curious about the religious significance of the site.
"This is a Buddhist temple," Sudarmo replied. "While we do have the concept of divine beings, these gods are also bound in the cycle of rebirth. Are you familiar with the concept of reincarnation?"
I nodded. "This is what the people of the Sun in my homeworld believed. The people of the Stars, on the other hand, believe that their soul will ascend into the sky and watch over their descendants."
Sudarmo went on to explain that the temple is adorned with a series of intricate reliefs that depict scenes from the life of the religious teacher who founded the Buddhism belief system. The reliefs were originally painted white and then given color later. All this has disappeared more than one thousand years later.
"You said that humans have restored part of this temple. Why not restore the colors too?"
"Well... it's controversial. We don't know the original color of the relief, for example. Well let's get up shall we?"
When I placed my foot on the stone floor of the temple, I felt something akin to…awe? I thought about the hundreds of thousands, if not millions of humans, who have set their feet on the temple. The sense of "deep time" I felt in Dieng was present here as well.
We climbed up to the first terrace and there we walked around as Sudarmo continued commentary on the relief on the wall and the balustrade of the terrace. He also injected the temple's history and significance. I found myself captivated by his storytelling, and before I knew it, half a claw had passed and we were at the topmost part of the temple. A statue of a human sitting sat before me, he looked so serene in his meditation.
Sudarmo told me that it was the Buddha himself.
"So, your main goal is to be free from the cycle of death and rebirth? How do you achieve it?"
"Well… if I have to sum it up I would use the five precepts. We have to abstain from killing living beings, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxication. Mind you, this is only a summation, people still argue about the details."
I was intrigued and asked, "All living beings? So you refrain from eating flesh?"
Sudarmo replied, "The vat-grown meat can be harvested without killing. Though I only eat them for my birthday." He added with a chuckle.
The idea of eating flesh only on one's birthday seemed morbid to me, but any argument I can think of against vat-grown meat would be based on my prejudice, not something coherently utilitarian.
Johan added, "Yeah, plant-based meat is cheaper and doesn't taste that different."
Curiosity got the best of me and I asked, "Is there any religion where flesh-eating is its central part?"
Sudarmo looked at Johan and I looked at my human too.
"Well… uh… when I say 'sacrifice' can you explain what the translation is?"
"To sacrifice is to do something detrimental to yourself for the betterment of others."
"Yeah… that is more like self-sacrifice to us. Sacrifice can also mean something we give for an offering to a deity."
"Oh… you used to offer flesh to your deities?"
"There is a religion where the sacrifice of animals was a major festival, but times have changed. That religion now accepts vat-grown meat as a substitute."
Sudarmo nodded in agreement. "Yes, the concept of sacrifice has evolved. The practice of animal sacrifice has been around for thousands of years, but we humans have become more aware of our impact on the environment and other living beings. As Johan said, many religions have adapted their practices to reflect these changes."
As much as they tried to hide it. My time in the museums revealed that humans had gone through dark times in which they waged war and committed atrocities against each other and other species. But as the geologist tour guide said, our ancestors' mistake is not our own. Humans, like everyone else. learn from their mistakes and grow.
Their commitment to creating a kinder future for their society is something that I found comforting. They had climbed up the food chain, but once they came victorious at the top... they looked down at those they trampled and… they chose to fix what damage they did.
I hope that more people in the future will be able to understand this.

*** CHAPTER 16 **\*
William Schenk enters a shabby apartment complex carrying a red, portable cooler. He passes the commonly empty front desk and proceeds upstairs. When he reaches his floor, he sees a call girl exiting his neighbor's apartment. He flashes a charming smile and keeps moving. His neighbor, ashamed, says, "Hey Bill…," But Bill doesn't stop. He offers a wave and continues down the hall.
Aside from a small TV and newspaper articles, his flat is almost barren. He places the cooler on the kitchen counter and heads into his bedroom. Opening the closet door, he procures a small, aqua green, square-shaped box and a thin strand of rope, approximately four feet in length.
He sets the box on the living room table, then grabs the portable cooler. On the table in front of him, he switches on an old radio, quickly tuning the device to a new station.
The reporter begins to speak about the mass grave that's been discovered, while Bill stuffs the box full of newspaper. He then opens the cooler and places the contents into box. The final step is to wrap the box with the rope, making the perfect knot and bow.
In the kitchen, he takes a black marker from a ceramic cup and writes a note on a small white tag. He slips the rope through a pre-punctured hole on the label and ties it off. Satisfied, The Organ Donor admires his work, then places the gift inside the freezer.
*** CHAPTER 17 **\*
Paint dripped on the precinct floor as Lincoln made his way to the restroom. He locked the door, unbuttoned his shirt, set it on the counter, and unhooked the latch on his brace. The Detective slowly removed the homemade cilice, exposing a throng of metal spikes that had left dozens of painful indentations in his skin. Lincoln stared at his scarred torso, stoic to the pain he had caused himself as repentance. As he watched the blood spill from several small wounds, he remembered cradling Roy's head, and in his mind, Lincoln felt he deserved this.
He allowed his sores a moment to breathe while he struggled to remove the paint from his shirt and jacket. Five minutes passed, and he was granted only a moderate improvement. He reapplied the painful undergarment, breathed sharply, and buttoned his shirt.
On the way to his office, he is approached by an officer, "Detective Riley," she says, "Renee Walsh would like to speak with you."
"Where is she?"
"Agent Webb is interviewing her now. Right, this way."
Following his colleague to the Booking Room, Lincoln feels the cilice pressing against his skin. He reaches into his shirt, pulls the strap to tighten the brace, and readjusts his clothes.
Agent Webb has concluded her interview, and she passes him in the hallway, "She's all yours."
Entering the room, Lincoln puts on a neutral face, "I'm sorry for the delay. Are you alright?"
Renee stands up from her chair and approaches the Detective, "Lincoln, It's been a long time."
"Look, this is just a precaution. You'll be safe here."
"That woman…" she says, referring to Agent Webb, "She's treating me like I'm a part of this."
Lincoln looks over his shoulder, then back to Renee, "I can't reveal much, but there is a connection between the murders and Jigsaw's accomplices."
Renee moves to the table and sits down, "I thought this was over. It's been over two years…."
"Have you been in contact with any of the other survivors?"
She sighs, "Not really, just Jeff…."
"You were close?"
Renee thinks about her response before answering, "He didn't do those things he was accused of… I-I trust him."
"What about the rest of the group?"
"The others? They never really liked me, and you don't often find someone who appreciates what John did."
Lincoln glances at her eye patch, "Why do you?"
She stares at her shoes and explains, "I always felt invisible, but he noticed me. I know it's stupid, but I needed this."
Her words resonated with Lincoln. He slid his hands against his chest and down to his hips. He could feel the Nitrous canister inside his pocket, left over from his session with Dr. Steward. A sudden craving was triggered, "We're going to keep you here as long as we have to."
Renee's face was tinged with sadness, "Lincoln, I can't." She says, distressed.
"What's wrong?"
She bits her lip, "It's not me I'm worried about… It's my Dad and Brother."
"There's no indication that they're in any danger."
"It's not that," She says, "My dad is sick. He needs me."
Lincoln's eyes wander, contemplative, "I'll tell you what, I'll send someone over there to make sure everything is alright, okay?"
"Thank you, Lincoln."
He moves towards the door, and she says, "Hey, maybe when this is all over, you can come by the Survivors Group and say 'Hello'? I think everyone would be happy to see you again."
Stopping at the door, Lincoln pauses and considers the suggestion. He slowly turns his head back to her and then exits the room.
Lincoln's desire to use was growing, but as he was about to exit the building, he was stopped by Chief Savino.
"Where are you going?" Savino asked.
Thinking on his feet, Lincoln replied, "I need to make a personal call."
"Can it wait?" Savino asked, "Have you finished the MP report?"
Lincoln can see Borden and Marlow through the Briefing Room window. Frustrated, he responds, "Just about. I'll bring it to you shortly."
He proceeded to the Briefing Room, where he sat at his desk and sifted through the Missing Person cases from the last ten years. While he researched the disappearances, the others read through a culled list of Jigsaw survivors and their last known whereabouts.
"Listen to this," Borden says, browsing a newspaper article, "Years after surviving Jigsaw's "final" test, "S.U.R.V.I.V.E" Author, Bobby Dagen, was found dead in his suburban home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,'" He glances at Lincoln for a reaction, "Did you hear about this? … "While a suicide note was not present at the scene, it's speculated that he felt guilt for the death of his wife, Joyce… Dagen was outed as a fraud shortly after the death of John Kramer."
Borden sets the article down and comments, "Wrote a book called 'Survive' and then kills himself. No irony in that, huh?"
"How 'bout this," Marlow adds, "Mother and Son Killed in Car Accident Near Home Residence…." He traces the words with his finger, "It says Tara Abbot and her son Brent were killed in a collision after Tara lost control of the vehicle."
Listening to his colleagues recite the news articles, Lincoln couldn't help but imagine the victims' deaths. He keeps his emotions at bay and continues to glean information from the Missing Person files.
"Here's another one," Marlow says, "Jigsaw survivor, Mallick Scott, was pronounced dead today. After struggling with substance abuse, Scott was kidnapped and tortured by the infamous John Kramer... Neighbors reported a pungent odor next door, and the arriving officers discovered Mallick had overdosed on heroin and drowned in his pool…." Marlow looks at his colleagues solemnly, "He was found with a rubber band wrapped around his arm."
Borden squints his eyes and shakes his head, "This can't be a coincidence," he theorizes.
"What? You think they were murdered?" Marlow replies skeptically, "Who could do that?"
"Do you know Mark Hoffman? Do you know how many people he killed the night Jill Tuck died?" He took out three FBI Agents, including Peter Strahm, and a slew of cops."
"That was before I started," Marlow admits.
Lincoln turns to his associates and reveals, "Six of these Missing Person cases were also Jigsaw survivors; Joan Douglas and Morgan Tillman both disappeared four years ago, realtor Brit Stevenson from the Fatal Five trap, vanished three years ago. The list goes on."
A lite knock at the door indicates Logan's arrival. He enters the room with Agent Webb, holding pictures in his hand, "Detective," he says.
"Come in…"
He hands Lincoln an Autopsy Report, and Agent Webb stands beside him, "We've identified the tattooed woman. Her name was Pamela Jenkins. She was William Easton's sister."
"Another survivor." Unnerved, Lincoln asks, "What about the others?"
"Jeff Ridenhour never showed up," Borden said.
Marlow conjures a curious expression, "The Dentist?"
"Neurologist. He was lobotomizing patients…."
"Allegedly..." Lincoln adds.
Webb's face showed concern, "He hasn't called?"
"No, but Gavin Beck is under protection… Stupid, asshole," Borden said, "He wouldn't leave his house, so I got a patrol unit watching over him."
"I spoke with Neil Perri hours ago." Marlow notes, "He sounded drunk…."
"What did he say?" Lincoln asked.
"He wouldn't tell me where he was but said he'd be here… There's more. Simone Howard called out of work the last two days. Her manager received a text stating she was sick. I tried to reach her by phone, but no response."
Lincoln leans back, ruminating, "And Sarah Harper?"
"Nothing," Borden reveals, "but Chief Savino issued an All Points Bulletin on all of the survivors. We're putting her face on TV."
Stepping forward, Agent Webb asked, "Where's the tape from Gordon's apartment?"
"This way," Lincoln leads her to the VCR in the back of the room, "Did you find something?"
"Pamela Jenkins was investigating Jigsaw Copycats. We lost communication with her about a week ago."
Borden joins them at the TV, and Agent Webb rewinds the tape. Using the computer next to the VCR, she locates a folder from the cloud containing several videos. "Her last transmission was from this broadcast."
She presses play on the first recording, and they watch as a camera is positioned on the dashboard of a car.
Pamela captures the heavy clouds that filled the night sky. Raindrops exploded onto her windshield as she traveled up a gravel road towards a mysterious home. A black car was parked outside the house, but the license plate was out of view. She exited her vehicle and shielded her camera from the wind and rain.
"I've seen this before…." Lincoln said, "It was on the news the night Gordon died."
Agent Webb adjusts the footage, filtering it through different settings until everything is visible. The VCR has finished rewinding, and she links the tape with the content from the cellphone.
The front door is already open when Pamela tries knocking. She looks inside, "Hello? Is anybody here?"
The light switch doesn't seem to work, but Pamela proceeds cautiously into the residence and enters a nearby room. On the floor, she finds crayon drawings and children's toys.
"What are you hoping to find?" Lincoln asks.
"Hello?" Pamela repeats.
The body of a small puppet lays face down on the floor next to two small chairs. Upon turning it over, Pamela discovers the head has been smashed. Picking up one of the broken pieces, she realizes it's the Billy puppet Jigsaw would use in his traps. The doll starts to laugh, but it's labored and distorted. Next to the puppet, she finds a hammer and nails.
Pamela grabs the tool, "What the…?"
The front door slams shut, and Pamela yelps, frightened, but no one is there. Trembling, she holds the hammer in front of herself like a sword. The loud wind crashes against the frame of the building, and her nerves settle. She moves through the darkness and finds a door that leads into the next room. However, wooden boards have been nailed to the wall to prevent entry.
Setting her camera down but still recording herself, she uses the hammer to yank the nails out of the wood, one by one and then uses her strength to pry them from the wall. When the last board is removed, she grabs her camera and opens the door.
Two hands quickly pierce the darkness and rush towards her. A shirtless, emaciated man mumbles and grabs at Pamela, tearing her shirt. She drops her phone and attempts to fight him off, smacking him several times with the hammer. Blood spews from his head, and he collapses to the floor.
Pamela grabbed her phone and checked on the lifeless man; his mouth hung open, and she could see his tongue had been cut out. His body is filthy, and his fingers are covered in blood from scratching at the walls.
"Fuck! …Shit!" She says. The footage stops suddenly.
Agent Webb suggests, "We think she tried to call the police." She clicks on the following video.
The footage returns, and they can hear Pamela panting. She walks into the next room, where the man was held captive.
The light flickers as the battery dies on her phone, and they can hear her slapping the camera. Pamela is startled by the sudden appearance of a corpse with a rusty pipe impaled through its neck. The cadaver is a reddish-brown, having been deceased for some time.
"Oh my god," she says, positioning her camera closer to the body.
A bright light in the hallway turns on, and she tilts her camera towards the luminescence. She could now hear the alarming moans of someone in jeopardy through the walls.
Agent Webb inhales and grinds her teeth. Watching both monitors, they prepare for the next scene.
Pamela moves fearfully into the hallway. Her heart is racing, and a surveillance camera captures her every move. Several floorboards have detached from the foundation, and there are scratch marks on the walls as if someone was dragged. Her teeth chatter, and she proceeds nervously towards the muffled groans, the floorboards creaking with her every step.
A masked figure appears behind her, their presence announced by the audible floorboards, but before she can turn around, the hooded man smacks her in the head. The video ends, but the surveillance camera records her grisly fate.
Webb notices something on the wall and rewinds the tape for several seconds. She positions the computer next to the television, restarts the cellphone footage, and pauses the content when she sees the same marking.
"Do you see that?"
With both screens side-by-side, they can now see the symbol of Ankh.
Lincoln leans forward, "What does it mean?"
"The "Ankh" is the Egyptian symbol for Eternal Life," she says, "In the last message we received from Pamela, she said she was investigating the Gideon Meat Packing Plant. I think she followed that car to this location."
"It can't be too far from the plant," Borden theorizes.
"Did you notice the toys and chairs? I think this is a Children's DayCare… I'm going to pull up the city records…."
"Marlow can help you with that," Lincoln says, "Simone Howard doesn't live too far from here. Frank and I will go get her."

[Humans are Weird] - Part 110 - Palindrome - Short, Absurd, Science Fiction Stories

Humans are Weird – Palindrome

-A short, absurd science fiction story.
“Want to see something cool?” Human friend Susan asked of the room at large when she came through the inner airlock.
There was an amber colored flurry of movement in the central perch tree as the Winged left the exterior perches and sought cover in the inner compartments. Three Undulates eased under the surface of the rest pool without so much as a ripple. Five Trisk sprinted up the ladders to a higher level catwalk, putting them conveniently out of Human Friend Susan’s line of binocular sight.
Krs’ktt suddenly found himself regretting his last promotion. If he were still a lowly sub-commander he could have justified joining his subordinates on the higher levels. As it was being the ranking officer in the communal room meant it was his duty to determine if they over-enthusiastic biologist had brought back anything particularly horrific from her rounds. The quarantine protocols should have prevented any such thing being dangerous but this human in particular had proven quite adept at finding creatures, items, and … well the only proper word for them was monstrosities that somehow did not meet the criteria for exclusion.
“I would be very interested in seeing this cool thing,” Krs’ktt said aloud as he walked to the edge of his work surface.
The human grinned and held up her datapad at about hip height. Krs’ktt felt the tension in the room drop dramatically. She had only brought back documentation. A few tentative sensory appendages poked out of the pool, paired black eyes peered out of the perch tree, and his traitorous kin edged to look down at what Human Friend Susan was showing him. He relaxed even further as he saw not the expected visual image recreation (nothing needed as many organs as the last carcass she had photographed had displayed) but only the standard data entry screen. He loosened his joints in relief and tilted his head to the side curiously.
“I am afraid I cannot recognize any pattern in this data set,” he said with an apologetic wave of his primary gripping leg. “Perhaps another biologist might-“
“No! No!” she interrupted with a laugh.
Krs’ktt fought back a wave of bristling annoyance.
“The metadata!” Human Friend Susan went on. “Look at that data point. I think it’s seventh from the bottom.”
“That is a data point,” Krs’ktt said.
Human Friend Susan laughed.
“It’s a numerical palindrome in the standard Core font!” she said.
She looked at him expectantly.
“What is a palindrome?” Krs’ktt asked.
“Oh,” Human Friend Susan blinked and her head tilted as she thought over her response. “It means the written item reads the same in both linear directions.”
Krs’ktt angled his primary eyes at the screen and tapped a knee joint thoughtfully.
“I do not see the pattern,” he finally said.
Human Friend Susan’s face wrinkled and she turned the screen to look at it.
“This one,” she said, touching the beginning of the indicated line.
“It is not symmetrical,” Krs’ktt pointed out.
“Leave out the punctuation,” Human Friend Susan suggested.
“It is still not symmetrical,” Krs’ktt argued. “Not that I can see. It has an odd number of digits.”
“Well just cut the central naught in half!” Human Friend Susan pressed.
The Undulates where all heaved out of the water now, waving their appendages attentively at the interaction. The Winged had taken to the air and were circling closer. Krs’ktt stretched out a bit and waved the Winged commander down.
“What do you thing Fifteenth Click?” he asked politely.
The amber Winged hovered in front of the screen a moment.
“I do not see this as symmetrical even with those specifications,” he said. “The tails on the threes alone would-“
“But aside from the little stuff!” Human Friend Susan interrupted.
Fifteenth Click and Krs’ktt glanced at each other curiously.
“We do not see the pattern Human Friend Susan,” Krs’ktt finally said with as much firmness as he could muster.
“Well it’s there,” Human Friend Susan said cheerfully. “I thought it was cool. Well ciao .”
She dropped the datapad in her hip pouch and strolled towards the kitchens.
“Cool,” Liftsgently spoke from the pool. “She uses the same designation for a single datapoint with an unusual pattern in the metadata as she does for a container full of fungal reanimated insect corpses.”
Krs’ktt stretched out his legs and returned to his work space as the common room fell into the usual noisy discussion that followed their human’s return.

2023.03.22 14:09 HandsomeTom74 HOA letter

I recently received a letter from my HOA regarding a truck I rarely drive being parked in the 3rd bay driveway of my house. It basically says it can't be for so many days. Which I get, fine I'll drive it a few times a month. But, the section that I'm trying to contest states that it can't be parked for their for an AGGREGATE of more than 12 calendar days. Since I received this letter I've started to check to see if that holds true for the rest of the neighborhood. In my observation there are 6-10 other trucks parked in driveways. One directly across the street from the HOA president who sent the letter. Granted they take them to work but, they are always parked, just like mine, every night and through most the weekend in the third bay driveway. I have no problem with this but, as most trucks today are huge and take up an enormous amount of space in garage. That's if they fit at all due to lifts and such. So,parking them in the driveway makes sense especially for people with kids with cars. My truck is older (1996 Eddie Bauer F-150) and the others are newer. But, mine isn't a rust heap or eye sore by any means. It's basically hidden from view except for the neighbors directly across the street due to the pine tree in front yard blocking it. So, my question: What, aside from getting a lawyer, should/can I do? Is there a "universal",for lack of a better word, method or steps of action others have taken when dealing with HOA in similar situations?

2023.03.22 14:09 Planet-Minecraft Endemol

Endemol

Background

Endemol (a.k.a. "Endemol Entertainment") was a Dutch production company founded in 1994 by Joop van den Ende and John de Mol through a merger of both their production companies: "Joop Van Den Ende TV-Producties" and "John De Mol Produkties". Their first big success was the reality series Big Brother, which first aired in the Netherlands in 1999. The company was owned by Mediaset from 14 May 2007 and later sold to Apollo Global. On 15 May 2014, Apollo and 21st Century Fox announced a joint venture to merge Endemol and Shine Group (now owned by Banijay).

1st Logo (1 November 1994-20 September 2001)

Logo: On a black background, we see the gold word "ENDEMOL" zooming out one letter at a time at a fast pace with the word "ENTERTAINMENT" zooming-out underneath, where we later see a warp effect while the letters continue to zoom out and start to spread to finish forming the word. There is a blue blast effect which later reveals a white spiked-arched crown (one above and one below), which would later turn blue. The words "ENDEMOL" and "ENTERTAINMENT" later turn yellow.
Variants:
  • This logo would have an effect just like the Embassy Television and Embassy Communications logos: the animation would play over the ending of any television show, but the background would later turn black.
  • There is also a short variant.
  • The logo appears white and still on Bear With Me.
Technique: The letters zooming out.
Music/Sounds: A loud whoosh as the letters are zooming out, followed by 2 drumbeats and another whoosh.
Music/Sounds Variants:
  • Sometimes, the end theme plays over or none.
  • Original NBC and CBS airings used a generic theme.
Availability: Rare.
  • It is seen on such shows like Chains of Love, RTL's Mini-Playback Show, and Lucky Letters.
  • The short variant is seen on S1 episodes of Fear Factor and Big Brother 1 & 2 on Paramount+.
Legacy: This is a memorable logo for those who watched Big Brother at the time, as are the next 3 logos which are more common finds.

2nd Logo (October 2001-2016)

Logo: Against a black background, a cloud of vapor appears, forming a slanted blue disc on its side, which spins to face the screen, "endemol" written underneath the eye which traces in. Later, an eye fades in on the disc.
Variants:
  • Shows produced by Endemol's divisions outside of the Netherlands had the country's name below.
    • Sometimes, the logo is sliding to the left, revealing the name of the respective country, which slides to the right when it is completed.
  • An alternate version exists where a vertical blue object appears by a slash effect (instead of the cloud vapor effect), flattening and transforming into a disc. It wobbles, flipping upwards and spinning rapidly, eventually unveiling a 2D eye and forming the same logo with no Endemol wordmark. When the eyes appear, it not only flickers a blue glow, but the company name (e.g. Zeppotron, 51 Minds, True Entertainment and Endemol UK Productions) whooshes and flies underneath it at a fast pace.
  • An in-credit version exists.
  • A print version of the logo exists. For foreign distribution, the text "Worldwide Sales - Endemol International and Distribution" is shown above the logo. It was also seen in Germany, as well as on DS games. Such versions exist for Italy, UK and the USA. The print version also appeared in GMA 7 of Wipeout (as Wipeout Matira Matibay).
  • On some international shows, the logo is right or left with the TV station on right or left. On the Philippine adaptation of Big Brother (Pinoy Big Brother), the logo is right, on the left is the 2000 ABS-CBN logo.
  • A variant exists where the logo fades out after it was formed.
Technique: The vapor.
Music/Sounds: Usually the end theme of the show can be heard, sometimes it can be silent. The logo's own music is a ringing sound when the disc appears, followed by a wobbly whoosh sound and then a streak-like sound when the disc spins.
Music/Sounds Variant: The international variant has a whoosh sound when the logo slides.
Availability: Uncommon. Appears on shows from the company.
Legacy: The logo's main piece (the eye) would go on to become a symbol for Endemol for the rest of its regular run, it would also go on and be a popular logo for many as every logo from Endemol afterwards used it. It was used in tandem with the 3rd logo starting with its 2nd month until 2012, the 3rd logo during its last 8 years, and the 4th logo during its last 2 years.

3rd Logo (27 November 2001-16 July 2012)

Logo: On a black background, we see the same Endemol logo from before zooming out through a iris-out effect, and during that, the eye looks around for a few seconds.
Variants:
  • For any American versions, it would simply have "usa" right next to the logo or underneath the company name. This variant is also used internationally, for example Italy (which replaces "usa" with "italia") and Poland (which replaces "usa" with "polska").
  • The logo is sped up on some shows.
Technique: The logo spinning up or looking around.
Music/Sounds: Usually the end theme of the show or none, but like the previous logo, it sometimes comes with its own music, which consists of two whooshes when the logo is zooming out, and then a clang when it's done zooming out.
Music/Sounds Variants:
  • ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox airings used a generic theme.
  • The Italian version used the audio from the last logo.
  • The Polish version has a revered orchestral hit, followed by a different clang.
Availability: Uncommon. Seen on Deal or No Deal on GSN and the syndicated version, 1 vs. 100 on GSN, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on TV Land, Big Brother, and Fear Factor episodes of the time on Chiller, among other shows.

4th Logo (12 February 2008-)

Logo: On a black background, the Endemol logo appears slowly rotating, surrounded by the reflections and shadows of itself. There is a light blink over the shield.
Variants:
  • The standard logo would come right after the 51 Minds logo.
  • Would appear in-credit on the 3rd season of 1 vs. 100 on GSN.
  • In this logo's early years, a light blink was absent, even the logo's effects are different (including the part where the reflections and shadows are disappearing).
  • Starting in 2011, the logo was put on a dark blue background. The black background is still used.
  • Sometimes, the logo is sped-up.
  • On Wipeout: The Game, the logo shakes a bit as it first appears, then animates normally.
  • Sometimes, the logo will have a copyright notice underneath it.
  • A variant exists from 2016 that has the Endemol Shine Group logo underneath, serving as a byline. It slides in like how that logo regularly does.
  • A weird variant is seen on the Vietnamese version of 1 vs. 100, the logo is smaller and on the right of some Vietnamese text.
Technique: The logo turning.
Music/Sounds: Originally, it used the previous logo's theme, but it later used a soft guitachoir sounder. However, different whooshes are heard in this logo's early years.
Availability:
  • Seen on Wipeout on ABC, Hell on Wheels on AMC and the Big Brother franchise on CBS and in other international syndicated channels overseas worldwide outside of the US (depending on which country you live in).
  • It was also seen as an in-credit on the 3rd season of 1 vs. 100 on GSN.
  • It also appears on some licensed international shows and games, like on all of the Wipeout games for the Wii.
  • The sped-up variant is seen on Steve Harvey in syndication.
  • The version with the dark blue background is also seen on Steve Harvey.
  • It is still used in Portugal, however.
Legacy: This is a memorable logo for fans of newer and current episodes of the Big Brother franchise, Hell on Wheels, and Wipeout.

5th Logo (2014-2016)

Logo: On a white background, we see a reverse shattering image that forms the 3D version of the Endemol logo, with the word "beyond", standing next to the Endemol logo.
Technique: The reverse shattering effect.
Music/Sounds: A Transformers-like robotic sound.
Availability: Seen on remixes on YouTube, like Fear Factor remixes.

2023.03.22 14:07 OddAd2629 Help, I got a stubborn dog!

I have a mutt, he is about three to four years old. I am just a teen so he isn’t mine technically, he is my family’s. We took him in for our cousin who had him for a while but she couldn’t take care of him, he was about two or three. I recently found a passion for training dogs, and the place to start is with the dog I have available to me. The dogs name is Ove. Right now I am learning heal with him. At first he did really good but I soon realized he started to become very sad? Not sure if that’s the right word. He wasn’t himself. So I gave him a little break. After about a month of not working on heal with him I decided to slowly work with him again. I worked with him once a week. I can only work for only five minutes before he gets stubborn. He will just sit and look at me and won’t listen to me. Yesterday I took him outside to work with him, this was the first time I worked with him outside. He did pretty good for the first time, half way through he just stopped listening to me. So I just went for run with him on leash and we went back inside to give him a break. I will see how he is today? Anyone have any tips? Should I move to something else? Ove has improved a lot since I started working with him but he is really is stubborn. Thanks for reading this.

With respect to the Maverick Springs project in Nevada, a re-logging, re-sampling, and petrographic program is planned to help define future drill targets.
Anticipating audited fiscal 2022 financial statements shortly. Element79 was unable to file its audited financial statements for the year ended August 31, 2022 by the December 29, 2022 filing deadline. The company anticipates that it will file the required documents on or before February 17.
Investment Rating is Outperform. The company may have gotten a little more than bargained for with acquisitions in multiple jurisdictions. Now it is in the process of slimming the portfolio down to focus on core projects. Element79 Goldhas a unique opportunity to build on the current inferred resource base of 3.71 million ounces of gold equivalents at its Maverick Springs property in Nevada and the prospect of near-term cash flow generation from restarting either the Lucero or Machacala mines in Peru. We think the valuation could improve over time as non-core assets are shed and more operational progress is achieved at Maverick Springs and in Peru.

Company Profile
Element79 Gold is a mineral exploration company focused on the acquisition, exploration, and development of mining properties for gold and associated metals. The company recently completed a NI 43–101 compliant mineral resource estimate for its Maverick Springs project in northeastern Nevada reflecting an inferred resource of 3.71 million ounces of gold equivalent. The company’s portfolio also includes properties along the Battle Mountain trend in Nevada which the Company is evaluating for exploration, sale or spin-out. In Peru, Element79 Gold holds a 100% interest in the past producing Lucero and Machacala mines. In British Columbia, Element79 Gold executed a letter of intent to acquire a private company which holds the option to acquire the Snowbird High-Grade Gold Project, which consists of 10 mineral claims located in Central British Columbia. The Company also has an option to acquire a 100% interest in the Dale Property which consists of 90 unpatented mining claims located approximately 100 km southwest of Timmins, Ontario, Canada in the Timmins Mining Division, Dale Township.
Fundamental Analysis — 2.5/5.0 Checks
Our fundamental assessment rating, separate from our investment rating and valuation, is based on five attributes. We assign 2.5 checks out of 5.0, which falls within our “Average” range of 2.5 to 3.0 checks. In our opinion, the company’s corporate governance practices are shareholder friendly including a four-member board comprised mostly of independent directors. The company’s flagship asset, Maverick Springs, is in the mining friendly jurisdiction of Nevada, which ranked third out of 84 jurisdictions in terms of investment attractiveness in the Fraser Institute’s Annual Survey of Mining Companies 2021. Other projects are located in British Columbia and Ontario which ranked 12th and 16th, respectively. The company has employed an aggressive growth strategy which increases risk and recently acquired properties in Peru which increases jurisdictional risk. However, the Peruvian acquisition is expected to improve the company’s cash flow profile. For further explanation of our fundamental analysis, refer to the disclosures at the end of this report.
Valuation Summary
Our investment rating is Outperform and our price target is C$1.10 or US$0.85 per share. As an exploration company, Element79 Gold cannot be valued based on revenues, EBITDA, earnings, or cash flow. For our valuation, we have employed an Enterprise Value/Resources method. Based on Element79 Gold’s 100% interest in the Maverick Springs NI 43–101 compliant inferred resource of 3.71 million gold equivalent ounces, enterprise value per gold equivalent ounce is below the comparable group average of C$18.47 or US$13.85. We think that as the company advances toward a preliminary economic assessment, the company will trade closer to the comparable group average on a gold equivalent ounce basis. Additionally, we think further upside exists if the company can expand Maverick Springs’ mineral resources, and continue to option, joint venture, or sell projects within the Battle Mountain portfolio. Assuming the company’s interest in Maverick Springs is valued at the comparable group average of C$18.47 or US$13.85 per gold equivalent ounce, near-term fair value for the project is at least C$68.5 million or US$51.4 million. For the time being, we have ascribed a value of C$20.0 million, or US$15.0 million, to the Peruvian assets which represents the purchase price. Adding back cash and subtracting debt leaves a fair market value of C$88.2 million or US$66.1 million. Rounding to the nearest $0.05, our price target of C$1.10 or US$0.85 is based on 78.8 million shares outstanding.
Investment Risks
Investment risks include but are not limited to: 1) Element79 Gold’s failure to commercialize economic mineral resources, 2) uncertainties associated with the availability and costs of future financing, 3) changes in capital market and macroeconomic environments, 4) fluctuations in exchange rates, 5) changes in supply and demand fundamentals for metals, including gold, 6) delays in the development of projects, 7) acquisition risks, and 8) the potential for operating costs and financing costs to vary from management expectations. We consider shares of Element79 Gold appropriate for speculative investors seeking high reward and high risk investments.

2023.03.22 14:04 jaz112 Quant finance student who can’t get a job

I'm currently a first year grad student at a top 5 program for quant finance. I've been hunting for a summer internship since September, and have had zero luck. My interviews were shaky at first, but I've done steps to get better, worked on my resume and cover letters, cold called and networked, and even reached out to professors. At this point, l've either applied or reached out to probably 200 firms in quant, IB, hedge fund, trading and PE. Nothing is sticking. My grades are not great, not horrible-pretty middle of the line. At this point, getting an internship for this summer seems near impossible. It's very disheartening to work so hard and pay so much for this to be the circumstance, but l'm determined to make something happen. Is there anything specific I can do this summer to put something on my resume? I was thinking something along the lines of a personal research project and taking the SIE. Any advice or kind words would be appreciated!

2023.03.22 14:03 Trippytrixx The fall before the flight x

This might be the last unsent letter I ever write for you. To be honest, if you were in front of me I’d still fall into your arms because that would mean that I was free to. I cared about you more than you let yourself believe. I’m unsure as to why though because we’ve hurt each other too many times and trust is broken. You truly take me for a fool and maybe I have been. What is it about you that makes me feel so weak? Your words are as piercing as they are enchanting and since they were your last I hope you’re happy. Take them to your grave. You say your words fall on deaf ears, but i too would sacrifice my sanity for the greater good. You don’t have to agree. It’s my life and choices to do with as I please. One day I will manage to erase all trace of you in my mind, you will become the static on a box tv. No vivid picture to be seen. It’s what I want anyway. It’s better than being consumed by thoughts of you day in and day out. So I write them out and hope that it heals me. I will figure it out. I’ll be happy and whole again one day, mark my words.

2023.03.22 14:03 AlexMikkelsen Making music

Making music
Hello everyone. I'll start right away, without long introductions. This post consists of two parts: theoretical, where I reflect on the nature of creativity, and practical, where I comment on the creation of specific compositions. So, let's go!
Music is an amazing kind of creativity. A song done in a few minutes can take off and earn an author a lot of popularity and a ton of money.
Roy Orbison and his partner Bill Deese sat at Orbison's house trying to compose a song. In search of a melody, they played whatever came to mind. Roy Orbison's wife, Claudette, looked into the room and told her husband that she was going to the city to shop. Roy asked if she needed money, and then Deese got into the conversation with the remark: “Pretty woman never needs any money!". Then Orbison began humming the phrase "Pretty woman walking down the street", and Bill Deese began to beat the rhythm with his fist on the table. He vividly imagined a certain woman in a yellow skirt and red shoes, her heels clicking on the sidewalk. When Claudette returned with her shopping, the song was ready. In a television interview, Orbison said that it took as long to write the song as it sounds.
Neither cinema, nor literature, nor painting can boast such a big difference between costs and results. What's the secret? And why are some compositions successful and others not? I will not delay with the answer: in my opinion, the reason for this lies in the melodies.
If you write brilliant lyrics, make a professional arrangement in a high-quality studio with the best masters, achieve crystal clear sound, draw a great cover, shoot a video for a lot of money and invest properly in advertising, but you will not have a good melody, all this will turn out wasted. Melodies that catch, swing, evoke emotions will be interesting, but just a set of notes, even a pleasant one, will not lead to anything special.
I don’t know why different people’s brains respond in the same way to certain sets of sounds, but we can take advantage of this. We need to learn how to find these sounds.
https://preview.redd.it/crhxjrj7capa1.png?width=700&format=png&auto=webp&s=494c3557056d0273abf087088ac351ed26b47d3b
When creating music, there are principles that are characteristic of creativity in general. In my understanding, creativity is the creation of new connections between elements. Elements can be anything: things, words, ideas. For example, let's take two elements: a table and a glass. Let's create a connection: the glass is on the table. This is trite, but this is creativity. Let's try the other way around: the table is on a glass. Already more interesting. A table inside a glass, a glass inside a table, a glass made of wood, a table made of glass - as you can see, there can be many options, and I think you have already noticed an important detail: most of these connections are complete nonsense. But among the nonsense, you can find something interesting. For example, a table where you can pour water - at least this is a little less nonsense than previous examples)
So in everything that concerns creativity: the majority of creations are uninteresting and useless, and the task of the creator is to find worthy ones among them.
The Russian poet Mayakovsky has a wonderful poem. In the original, of course, there is a rhyme that makes the poem ten times better, but the pure meaning is also worth attention.
Poetry is the same mining of radium.
In gram production, in years of work.
You exhaust a single word for the sake of
Thousands of tons of verbal ore.
But how sizzling these words are burning
Next to the decay of the raw word.
These words set in motion
Thousands of years of millions of hearts.
The creation process as a whole consists of three stages:
  1. Accumulation of elements. In order to have something to create connections between, we need to find something new. The process of cognition, akin to creativity, is engaged in this. They are closely linked: recognition of something is impossible without creation, and creation leads to the recognition of something new.
  2. Generation of new links. As a rule, the subconscious is involved in this process. It does it quickly, easily, and much better than consciousness. Try, for example, deliberately creating new connections between the same table and glass, and you will see that this process is slow and stressful. But if you somehow convince the subconscious to do this (for example, trying to do it consciously for a while), new connections will pour in. This is inspiration.
  3. Selection. Probably the most important stage at which it is necessary, focusing on your feelings, to choose the best and throw out the rest. One of the biggest challenges at this stage is not distinguishing the good from the best and stopping work before greater results can be achieved. For example, a musician composes a melody, he really likes it, because it turns out to be better than everything that he has composed before, but he does not notice that the melody is still not good enough to use it in his work.
Eliezer S. Yudkowsky "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality":
"Unfortunately for Mr. Malfoy, he is still new to the art of creativity, and so he has committed a classic error of Ravenclaw."..."Mr. Malfoy is new to the business of having ideas, and so when he has one, he becomes proud of himself for having it. He has not yet had enough ideas to unflinchingly discard those that are beautiful in some aspects and impractical in others; he has not yet acquired confidence in his own ability to think of better ideas as he requires them. What we are seeing here is not Mr. Malfoy's best idea, I fear, but rather his only idea."
Now let's move on from the principles of creativity in general to creating melodies. In the case of melodies, elements are notes: their duration, pitch, and the intervals between them. And their combination is the creation of connections. Our task is to generate a large number of melodies, and then select those that cause an emotional reaction, catch. You can just hum or play an instrument. Do not forget that at first the process will be very difficult, and the result will be disgusting. Soon, the subconscious mind may figure out what you want from it (or maybe not - try it next time), and it will start working on its own. This is the optimal state for work.
Another important aspect of working with the subconscious is worth mentioning. The degree of effectiveness of his work and control over him depends on the degree of mental stress. If you are relaxed, then control and efficiency are maximized - you can easily start and stop the necessary processes, there is even an opportunity to hear melodies right in your head and control them there. If you are tense, depressed, then the situation will be the opposite. Therefore, it is advisable to bring yourself as relaxed as possible before starting creative work.
This can be done either with the help of external things that cause relaxation (environment, music, smells), or with the help of the skills of conscious relaxation (concentration on breathing, biofeedback therapy). This is a separate, no less interesting topic, but now we are talking about something else. Unless it is absolutely not worth using nicotine, alcohol or worse for relaxation - the minus is more than the plus.
When the melody is ready, you can create a composition on its basis, and here you will find all the same creativity, all the same enumeration of options - not only notes, but also chords, instruments, effects, features of the genre in which you compose. All this is also important, but not as important as the melodies, and in this article I will not go deep into this topic. As developing any skill, composing music takes time and effort, and it is worth remembering that the fundamental difference between someone who has achieved something and someone who has not achieved anything is that the first one started and did not quit.

On this philosophizing, we can end and go to examples.
***
There are special programs for working with music, and they are called DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). There are a great variety of them: there are paid ones, there are also free ones. Those who work with them constantly argue about which one is better, but here the principle applies: the best workstation is the one in which you personally feel comfortable working. At one time I played with FL Studio, with Reaper, but now I mainly work in Cakewalk by Bandlab (formerly Sonar). Unlike the previous two, it is free and at the same time relatively full-featured (although not very popular). An interesting detail: when creating what I will talk about next, I used exclusively free programs, plugins and other intellectual property. You can judge for yourself how much this is enough to create music.
Here is the final result:
https://www.reddit.com/useAlexMikkelsen/comments/11yi6gy/alex_mikkelsen_hello_world_ep_2021/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
So, after a long break in creativity, I decided to write something and remembered that Bandlab has another free DAW that you can work with right in the browser. There it is.
Bandlab
There are a lot of instruments and sounds here, it is easy to learn, so it can be useful for beginners.
Remembering my brilliant theory about composing melodies, I began to strum whatever was right on the keyboard. I am not very good at playing the piano, but nevertheless, after several approaches and many attempts, I composed the main melody for the synthesizer. Added bass and drums. It worked out well. Then, trying to keep up with the style of this melody, I composed the intro. And then the bridge after the main melody. Added a few more instruments. And so, little by little, the following picture came together.
Road (former Blizzard)
It may look menacing, but the project is actually not that difficult. Complex arrangements can have several dozen tracks.
I've heard the expression that music is a combination of the familiar and the unexpected. Following this principle, I tried to make sure that in each measure (rectangle) there was something new - the introduction of a new instrument or a new melody, or, on the contrary, silence.
And this is how the so-called piano roll looks like in this program, where the work with notes takes place. Here you can add, move, stretch and perform other manipulations within the law of your country.
Piano roll
Let's go further. And then I decided to do something cosmic, and, torturing the keyboard, knocked out a few notes from it. I set the tempo down, took a stringy synthesizer as an instrument, and it turned out to be ambient.
Home
As you can see, everything is even simpler here, but the composition does not get any worse from this. The cherry on top was an apparently Pink Floyd-inspired guitar solo. Also played on the keyboard, but in separate fragments, and adjusted to the rhythm.
As you can see, I like to copy melodies and scatter them on different instruments playing at the same time. Here it played a cruel joke on me, and by copying the synthesizer melody to the bass track in the beat before the solo, I got a peculiar, albeit dirty sound. It would be much better to have one note on the bass here, not two. But I don't think anyone really cares.
https://preview.redd.it/846jw1sqgapa1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=d0d77e2f9a01115c7af9ea866bcbe6298a0b0798
After creating this track, I got the crazy idea that it would be cool to publish this. But two compositions seemed to me a little, so I took out old records from the stash and finalized them. They are made in Cakewalk and look like this.
Hello World
Rainy
Yes, my narration looks like:
https://preview.redd.it/db61l7zycapa1.png?width=1026&format=png&auto=webp&s=0d40ff8c6084464ad4a98ba8a40cdce90318f016
But, as I said, creating an arrangement is the same often not very interesting enumeration of options, the result of which you see in the screenshots.
Let's say the arrangement is ready, and the nastiest part of the job comes - mixing. This is when a sound engineer adjusts the volume, pan (left / right), frequencies and effects for each individual track so that they sound organic and do not interfere with each other. I set up old projects right in the program, and saved two new ones as separate tracks and loaded them into Cakewalk. True, when saving to the recording, some kind of digital crackle appeared, which can be heard in some parts of the Road and Home tracks, but I suggest considering this as an artistic technique.
Mixing of Road
I must say that the mixing turned out pretty badly, and at the middle frequencies I have a mess, but I think that all this is compensated by great melodies).
https://preview.redd.it/3wteachcgapa1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=4973a5fbd3e0d711818d538cfbf8077410d0be13
The next stage is mastering. This is the preparation of the final recording for publication. Here, the volume adjustment, equalizer and so on also come into play, but this is now applied not to individual tracks, but to the track as a whole. Modern tracks are very loud and very compressed (this is when the loudest moments of the recording and the quietest ones are brought closer to the same average loudness value). The so-called "loudness war" led to this result. Once the producers discovered that the louder the recording, the brighter and more interesting it seems to the listener, and began to compete with each other in twisting the sliders. Thanks to this, the volume of the published music has been steadily growing over the past half century, and we will not be left out either). In addition, the recordings from one release should have the same volume so that the listener does not have to turn the knob at the beginning of each new track.
My mastering skills are even worse than mixing, but here the same Bandlab came to the rescue. The service provides free (which is important) mastering services in automatic mode: you upload a track to the site, and the program tries to put it in order. And, interestingly, she is good at it, although for professionals this approach will cause severe mental and maybe physical suffering.
https://preview.redd.it/iipn7p76dapa1.png?width=399&format=png&auto=webp&s=13efbbb86764cb76361b10e40aee08fe4f7e7205
I'll tell you a secret: individual people, professionals, should be engaged in mixing and mastering, since this is a painstaking and thankless process that can cause a lot of problems for a novice artist. It is a known fact that Billie Eilish recorded her debut album with her brother literally in the bedroom on not the most expensive equipment, and highly paid specialists in the studio were engaged in the subsequent processing. But this does not threaten us yet.
So, the tracks are ready, and they are even almost of the same volume (I messed up here too, obviously choosing different mixing styles for different tracks (see the picture above). Now you need to share them with others, and then collect praise, wait for letters from labels, fend off fans ...
The current time is such that even a schoolboy can send his music to all possible stores, and then collect money for listening (royalties). For this, there are special services - aggregators, which either for a fee or for a percentage of the proceeds send masterpieces to all sorts of itunes and spotifies. I decided that such a scale is not required specifically for this release - tracks in this genre have not achieved great popularity, and it will take too long to wait for the release on the platforms.
The first thing I did was upload my four-track mini-album to Soundcloud. I found some commercial licensed photos on free stock photo stocks and designed the album page and cover with them.
I also decided to make a video with my tracks and put it on Youtube. As a video editor, I used a not very convenient, but free Shotcut. The video featured the album cover on a black background and the song title underneath. Remembering that the standard Microsoft fonts are not very free for commercial use (you never know), I tried hard and found a suitable one on Google Fonts. On the one hand, the resulting picture looks quite stylish, but on the other hand, it is very cheap and creates some kind of tragic feeling. But that is what it is.
https://preview.redd.it/v0ez6df8dapa1.png?width=807&format=png&auto=webp&s=d63397f06e93263a3b1158d5f75382ebbcd62e4c
I saved the result at 720p, but, interestingly, YouTube itself added 1080p from somewhere else, apparently so that you can enjoy a black screen in HD format.
I also made my own Coub for each song, suitable for the style, and also published it, but there is no particular activity there.
I must say that I do not count on any particular popularity of these four compositions. Yes, in my opinion, there are good tunes (and this is the most important thing), but this is not the kind of music that hits the charts. What I have composed is the first steps, acquaintance. That is why the mini-album is called Hello World.
Actually, that's it. Thanks for your attention!

Weyward by Emilia Hart

I am a Weyward, and wild inside.
2019: Under cover of darkness, Kate flees London for ramshackle Weyward Cottage, inherited from a great aunt she barely remembers. With its tumbling ivy and overgrown garden, the cottage is worlds away from the abusive partner who tormented Kate. But she begins to suspect that her great aunt had a secret. One that lurks in the bones of the cottage, hidden ever since the witch-hunts of the 17th century.

As a girl, Altha’s mother taught her their magic, a kind not rooted in spell casting but in a deep knowledge of the natural world. But unusual women have always been deemed dangerous, and as the evidence for witchcraft is set out against Altha, she knows it will take all of her powers to maintain her freedom.
1942: As World War II rages, Violet is trapped in her family's grand, crumbling estate. Straitjacketed by societal convention, she longs for the robust education her brother receives––and for her mother, long deceased, who was rumored to have gone mad before her death. The only traces Violet has of her are a locket bearing the initial W and the word weyward scratched into the baseboard of her bedroom.
Weaving together the stories of three extraordinary women across five centuries, Emilia Hart's Weyward is an enthralling novel of female resilience and the transformative power of the natural world.

The Mere Wife by Maria Dahvana Headley

Two mothers—a suburban housewife and a battle-hardened veteran—struggle to protect those they love in this modern retelling of Beowulf.
From the perspective of those who live in Herot Hall, the suburb is a paradise. Picket fences divide buildings—high and gabled—and the community is entirely self-sustaining. Each house has its own fireplace, each fireplace is fitted with a container of lighter fluid, and outside—in lawns and on playgrounds—wildflowers seed themselves in neat rows. But for those who live surreptitiously along Herot Hall’s periphery, the subdivision is a fortress guarded by an intense network of gates, surveillance cameras, and motion-activated lights.
For Willa, the wife of Roger Herot (heir of Herot Hall), life moves at a charmingly slow pace. She flits between mommy groups, playdates, cocktail hour, and dinner parties, always with her son, Dylan, in tow. Meanwhile, in a cave in the mountains just beyond the limits of Herot Hall lives Gren, short for Grendel, as well as his mother, Dana, a former soldier who gave birth as if by chance. Dana didn’t want Gren, didn’t plan Gren, and doesn’t know how she got Gren, but when she returned from war, there he was. When Gren, unaware of the borders erected to keep him at bay, ventures into Herot Hall and runs off with Dylan, Dana’s and Willa’s worlds collide.

Orconomics by J Zachary Pike

Professional heroes kill and loot deadly monsters every day, but Gorm Ingerson's latest quest will be anything but business as usual.
Making a Killing in Professional Heroics
The adventuring industry drives the economy of Arth, a world much like our own but with more magic and fewer vowels. Monsters’ hoards are claimed, bought by corporate interests, and sold off to plunder funds long before the beasts are slain. Once the contracts and paperwork are settled, the Heroes’ Guild issues a quest to kill the monster and bring back its treasure for disbursement to shareholders.
Life in The Shadows
Of course, while professional heroics has been a great boon for Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and all the other peoples of light, it's a terrible arrangement for the Shadowkin. Orcs, Goblins, Kobolds, and their ilk must apply for to become Noncombatant Paper Carriers (or NPCs) to avoid being killed and looted by guild heroes. Even after getting their papers, NPCs are treated as second class citizens, driven into the margins of society.
An Insane Quest
Gorm Ingerson, a Dwarven ex-hero with a checkered past, has no idea what he's getting himself into when he stands up for an undocumented Goblin. His act of kindness starts a series of events that ends with Gorm recruited by a prophet of the mad goddess Al'Matra to fulfill a prophecy so crazy that even the Al'Matran temple doesn't believe it.
Money, Magic, and Mayhem
But there’s more to Gorm’s new job than an insane prophecy: powerful corporations and governments, usually indifferent to the affairs of the derelict Al’Matran temple, have shown an unusual interest in the quest. If his party of eccentric misfits can stop fighting each other long enough to recover the Elven Marbles, Gorm might be able to turn a bad deal into a golden opportunity and win back the fame and fortune he lost so long ago.

A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon

In A Day of Fallen Night, Samantha Shannon sweeps readers back to the universe of Priory of the Orange Tree and into the lives of four women, showing us a course of events that shaped their world for generations to come.
Tunuva Melim is a sister of the Priory. For fifty years, she has trained to slay wyrms – but none have appeared since the Nameless One, and the younger generation is starting to question the Priory's purpose.
To the north, in the Queendom of Inys, Sabran the Ambitious has married the new King of Hróth, narrowly saving both realms from ruin. Their daughter, Glorian, trails in their shadow – exactly where she wants to be.
The dragons of the East have slept for centuries. Dumai has spent her life in a Seiikinese mountain temple, trying to wake the gods from their long slumber. Now someone from her mother's past is coming to upend her fate.
When the Dreadmount erupts, bringing with it an age of terror and violence, these women must find the strength to protect humankind from a devastating threat.
After the poll is complete, we will ask for a volunteer to lead discussions for the winning book. Head on over to Goodreads to vote in the poll.

2023.03.22 14:00 tryingtobenice101 How do you kindly breakup with someone who loves you dearly in a way that causes them the least trauma possible?

TLDR: just read title lol.
Don’t feel compatible with my partner (24M). Never felt an immense initial attraction like I (27F) have with others but was hoping something would grow because he loves me so much more than anyone ever has and treated me so well. I prefer a bigger guy, and he was bigger when I met him but turns out that was from steroid use which is a massive turn off and massive no from me. Now he made the change to stop (likely influenced by me) has become skinny and I hate that it’s a reason I feel less attracted to him (would have gone for a naturally strong man).
Then there were a few times he let me down very early on but each time he heard, apologised & made direct action to change. An example would be I’m very anti drugs and found out he used to take cocaine a lot, and I believe he may have taken it when we were together, so now he has completely stopped drinking alcohol for me and vowed he stopped drugs since we met.
I tried to breakup with him a few months ago. Now he’s going all out and reading me love letters everyday but I don’t feel the same way back and I feel bad about that every time he reads one because of that. E.g he’ll say “I live for you and you’re the love of my life” words to that effect, and I’ll think to myself “f*ck I do not feel the same way right now”.
I hope it’s not the wrong choice to breakup because he certainly is the most forward with his love for me out of anyone I’ve dated, we have great communication (I think), he has an awesome family and it’s my longest relationship. I just don’t really feel like I love him.
I promised him I would always be honest with him and I like to think I am an honest person but this is incredibly difficult for me.
How the hell do I end things in a way that does not break him? I want to do it in the nicest way possible and cause the least pain possible. Thank you.

2023.03.22 13:57 Seektruth0 PROTESTANT CHRISTIANS!!!!!!!!!!! I FEEL JUSTIFIED IN BRINGING, SIMILAR TO MARTIN LUTHER WITH THE CATHOLICS, I BRING TO PROTESTANTS ⭐️ 35 THESIS. ⭐️

Christian’s i want to start by saying I will only do 1/2 at a time and will get more heavy as time goes on but read what I have to say and when you do question me respond don’t hide because of fear of the truth!!!!
I speak to the Sola Scriptura Protestant a lot today and probably many more
Christian’s have a million different denominations so I will speak to what I believe to be the majority (which already should be a point on its own ex. Corinthians with food and alters) Christian’s agree to a high percentage
  1. CHRISTIANS are followers of Jesus Christ because they believe Jesus is God, meaning Christian’s want to replicate their lives like Jesus because he is holy and without sin and omnipotent = (God)
A. This means Christian’s will actively try to do, what Jesus did in his life, in their lives, as Jesus himself did in scripture 2000 years ago and since scripture says that we gentiles/Jews can do even greater thing than him(Jesus) (not implying greater than dying for humanity sins, but miracles and lifestyle)
Problem: WHY then does the CHRISTIAN THINK the Bible is God’s divine word (Old/New Testament)
i. Jesus/God NEVER tells us to make a book post-Old Testament and worship it.
ii. Jesus/God Never said read the Bible
iii. Jesus/God Never says the Bible (Old/New Testament) is divine truth
IV. Jesus never knew what a Christian was in his 33 years on earth
V. Jesus was a Jew
VI. Men made the Bible and called it divine
POST PROBLEM
• Jesus tells Christian’s they will receive a greater gift than JESUS being on earth!!!! (hint - near another thesis point, keep thinking)
Which was the Holy Spirit. He NEVER SAID “Dig up and compile a bunch of writings of, holy and righteous followers of Christ near Jesus’ time and see what they say. Then equate it to God/Jesus( Same as when Christian’s say Bible= YHWY/God’s word. “ ANNNNDD!!!! (As if that doesn’t sound scary enough) WHENEVER these holy/righteous Men (Paul Timothy you know lol) that lived near Jesus say, “( {YHWY, GOD ALMIGHTY, THE DELIVERER THE HOLY ONE, JEHOVA} is speaking through me.”
We take that as GOD!!!!!!! (Why would you ever believe a man claiming to have YHWY/God speaking through him exactly!!!!!!?????)
Which is where I believe 99% of Christian problems stem from the concept Bible=God, outside of sin lol of course.
I would even assume if Paul found out 2000 years later people would take something sent to one person/group in one to maybe 4 languages in their day in age would be Equated the the word of God after millions of translations and no printing press, and CORRUPTION, and then generational misunderstandings. He would shit himself (hint - another thesis point keep thinking)
Solution (I believe 🥴 and I’m a Christian so I could have something’s if not the whole thing wrong but ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Holy Spirit right
  1. The Bible is equivalent to according to my perspective of western Protestant Christianity
(outside of Old Testament, Jesus , and YHWY.)
YOU being in touch with God and then saying God said this! When you can not 10000% prove that it was I’m fact God that said that.
Jesus can say that but why do we think Paul can? Because he was righteous relative to us AVG Christian sinners????

  1. The Bible is comparable to according to to my perspective of western Protestant Christianity
YOU being very righteous, in todays day and age(1950-Now)
Knowing, as a Christian, we all can understand cutting someone one off on the road while driving a car (out of anger)
You write to a church you planted
“Don’t cut people off because that is you displaying the ultimate selfishness”
Now: we get that statement
200 years from now: they may program autonomous cars to not cut people off in fear of sinning (missing the point) the hearts decision (hint - another thesis point keep thinking)
In 2000 years: If they travel through light how are they or will they ever gonna grasp the concept of driving a car I mean damn will your great grandkids even know much about driving cars. Kids don’t even know what a cassette tape is or even driving stick lol
This was a softer point I have more coming I’m not proof reading too long

2023.03.22 13:48 Stavros_McGillicuddy Typing suggestions (Windows 10)

Typing suggestions (Windows 10)
I use Show Suggestions as I Type" on Windows 10. In every application except Teams when I select the suggested word, it overwrites the text I started typing and only shows the word suggestion. When I select the suggested word in Teams, it only overwrites the last typed letter with the selected (suggested) word.
Any idea on how to fix this
In my Teams example, typing Tes and selecting Test returns TeTest

Here is the same example in Word (works as expected)
