Are You Smarter than a Random Picker? Race 08 Results + Race 09 Predictions
2023.03.26 21:01 JoshP99 Are You Smarter than a Random Picker? Race 08 Results + Race 09 Predictions
| Results Overview Round 08 Pick Distribution There's a point where the computer failing spectacularly is more shocking than amusing. That point is this race. He picked the 2 marbles who DNFed, and the last 3 competitors to finish the race. It resulted in the lowest mark to beat in the history of this competition: 13 points. Maybe I should hit the fail button for myself since I prophesized Round 08 to be deadly... That being said, I was shocked at how many of you chose Amethyst (AME) as your 3x. But I'd say the gamble paid off, given she returned to the podium for the 1st time since the season opener. Now, the most popular 2x, Superball (SUP), did his part, but I can't say the same thing for the most popular 1x. Ghost Plasma (GHO) failing to finish means the championship contention gets closer, and he just barely dodges an Overrated rating. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the board, Red Number 3 (RN3) finds himself in last place for the 2nd time, after falling to 16th in the main tournament standings. Just above him is Crazy Cat's Eye (CCE), who becomes the next marble to reach the podium from P16. Today's Top 10% Surprise, surprise. There is another tie for the last blue mark. The 2 who managed to do this were Bored & Loggo, who share something else in common aside from their 5-letter names: a score of 113 pts, each with 3x AME, 2x POL, 1x GHO, 1x LOP, 1x SUP. If we look within 2 pts above this pair, we also have Mathew117 & Dolphin, who have punched their tickets to the finish line. However, I should warn you all to prepare for a week of showboating, as the week's winner is KD9, with a score of 122 pts! His selection is identical to the one I mentioned above in the tie, except with SLI replacing GHO. Statistics Computer's Score: 13 pts (3x CMO, 2x BBL, 1x GHO, 1x RN3, 1x SBO) Survival Rate: 97.67% (42 of 43) Average Player Score: 83.79 pts Range of Scores: 109 pts (13 min, 122 max) Most Frequent Player Scores: 73, 75, 81, 82, 84, 91, 112, & 113 pts (scored 2 times each) Looking Ahead 10 players are guaranteed to reach The End. 15 players are guaranteed to reach Race 10. 17 players are getting hung up on the traps. 1 player has spun out of control: I don't know what to tell y'all. Chris copied the computer's picks, and changed Ghost Plasma & Blizzard Blaster (BBL) around - the 2 marbles who happened to not finish. This is why I don't encourage putting all your eggs in 1 basket. He'll be leaving with his bronze medal. As for the 42 who are remaining... === CHECKPOINT: SILVER MEDAL THRESHOLD === Congratulations! Everyone left has jumped to a silver medal. If you have less than 3 strikes, congratulations! Your bronzes have been swapped for one of these. Now, as a reminder, the requirement for gold is to reach the end with fewer than 2 strikes. Anyone who's currently on 0 strikes just needs to beat the computer once. If you have 2 strikes right now... you might need a bit of help. But I did it in my debut, so I know it's possible. Here are some quickfire facts: - DinoKea has taken the lead by a margin of 8 points, with 2 races to go.
- ramen powder is currently in 11th, tied on points with the leader, but with 1 strike. Had he scored just 1 point more in this race, he would've tied for the last blue mark as well, which would vault him into the lead by a single point.
- KD9 is still undefeated against the computer. But need I remind you what happened to turtlepower0704 after he did that in ML22 with 2 events to go?
- 232 strikes have been accumulated in total, of which only 42 have been removed.
- Ghost Plasma, as to be expected, has scored the highest amount of points for our players, with 5,615 pts across 8 races. Superball trails closely behind with 5,467 pts.
- Cobra (COB), as expected, is last in raw picks and net multipliers. He has actually been picked just 4 times in each of the last 3 races.
Here are the PDF files for every race since the last checkpoint by u/Micek_52: Looking Ahead There is only one track left. And the computer's got a pretty... interesting strategy in mind for Race 09. The Penultimate™ Round! Here's the computer's list for the upcoming race. 3x Superball (SUP) 2x Lollipop (LOP) 1x Cobra (COB) 1x Grasshopper (GRA) 1x Slimer (SLI) The computer seems to have noticed a P16 starting spot does not mean jack shit. That being said, it's probably more hilarious to me that his regulars are the 3 green marbles. I promise you I didn't rig the bot. I do these draws live. Just 2 more rounds to go! Make this final stretch count! To submit predictions, CLICK HERE. Remember, you cannot use a marble as a tripler if you've already used them there. Using a marble as a doubler or regular has no limitation. Index Dust Jacket Summary Peter Raves is not a Villain. But he is going to kill a Hero.
Peter carries in his veins the blood of one of the greatest superheroes who has ever lived—and yet his power is pitifully weak. To his family, and to the world, Peter is completely worthless.
After a lifetime of abuse at his father’s hands, Peter runs away from home. He ends up in Caledan, the seat of the Council of Heroes and the central focus of all Hero-Villain activity on Earth. Every day, Heroes and Villains vie against each other in spectacular battles that enrapture the masses. The most famous of all the Heroes in Caledan is Carmen Bauer, popularly known as The Shield. He is the youngest Hero to ever sit on the Council, one of the strongest superheroes alive today—and anomalous for inheriting Heroes’ power even though he is at the end of his bloodline.
Driven to prove his own strength, Peter will go to any length to defeat this mightiest of Heroes, but he has no idea what he is getting himself into. A war is coming, and Peter is about to be caught in the middle of it all. Somehow, he must balance his ambitions against his principles—and try not to lose himself along the way.

Wraith: Of Villains - Chapter 15 15 Undozutre
The foyer to Naku’s home was a broad rotunda with fishbone-patterned flooring and plaster molding on the walls. Five different doors made of stained glass perforated the perimeter at even intervals, and a carpeted stairway curved up to a decorated landing ringing a chandelier.
“It’s been seven months since we met,” Naku commented as Peter entered. Closing the door behind Peter, Naku thumped heavily across the rotunda toward the door with a stained-glass image of a winged fleur-de-lis. “It took you long enough to find me.”
Following, Peter protested defensively, “I wasn’t looking for you.”
“And why not?” Naku retorted. “I saw the face you tried to hide. A smart man who wears a mask would kill the witnesses.” He passed a narrow-eyed glance over his shoulder. “Like you did with Trevor Kramer.”
Peter gritted his teeth. He still had occasional nightmares of watching Hero Electrum falling to his death. Not as many nowadays, but the memory still made him feel sick to his stomach. As they passed through the fleur-de-lis door and into a carpeted corridor, Peter said, “I… That was an accident. I didn’t do it on purpose. I’m not a killer.” The carpeted hallway soaked up sound, making his statement sound pitiful in the silence.
Naku glanced over his shoulder at Peter. His tone had a bite to it as he commented, “Best keep that sort of vapid sentimentality to yourself, boy.”
Peter furrowed his brow. “I’m not a boy.”
“You look like one.”
“I’m not a child.”
Naku chuckled as they reached the end of the corridor and passed through a metallic door that slid open horizontally at their approach. “How old are you?” he asked, stepping through the doorway.
Peter paused outside the metal door. It opened onto an old-fashioned elevator car. “Nineteen,” he said carefully, all of his old instincts firing like bolts of electricity in the back of his mind.
Holding the elevator door open with one beefy hand, Naku looked Peter up and down in mocking disbelief. “You’re thirteen, if a day.”
“I’m nineteen,” Peter growled. “Where does this rickety old thing go?”
Naku grinned in amusement. “My training room. That’s why you came here, wasn’t it? To get training?”
“Yeah, I just… Elevators can break.”
Naku laughed. “Get on or get out.”
Gritting his teeth, Peter stepped into the elevator car.
“I’ve been excavating this cellar over the years,” Naku exposited as the creaking elevator car slowly bore him and Peter downward. “It’s bound to be as deep as the ridge by now.” Raising his eyebrow at Peter, Naku quipped, “It pays to invest in a hidden lair.” Peter doubted he would need one, but he nodded anyway.
The elevator descended three stories before opening to a hallway branching off in three different directions. As Naku started down the leftmost hallway, he eyed Peter skulking along beside him. “You were on Vaise’s freighter,” the giant bluntly stated.
“So were you,” Peter retorted noncommittally.
Undeterred by the standoffish reply, Naku clarified his point, “
Why were you on Vaise’s freighter?”
Peter gritted his teeth. “Let’s just say I have my reasons.”
Naku chuckled as their footsteps echoed in the silent corridor. “One of the things I’m going to teach you is how to pick your battles, kid. And let me make it clear to you—this is not a battle worth picking. If you wish to learn what I can teach you, there needs to be a level of trust and openness.”
Peter chewed the inside of his lip. He was here to learn, not to make friends. But if a touch of transparency was the payment, he supposed he could compromise.
“I was there for the same reason you were. To get aether dust.”
Naku fixed his one-eyed leer on Peter, the smirk wrinkling his damaged eye. “I was there to pad my wallet, boy. All you had with you was a small thermos to carry aether dust. Even a small amount of dust can get you rich, but there is literally no reason not to go for the bigger haul. So what the hell do you want aether dust for?”
Peter gritted his teeth, unwilling to answer. With reluctance, Peter said, “I need aether dust to… to make… a gun.”
“There are plenty of guns on the black market. Besides, most Heroes have bodyshields against guns. Plenty have enough power to survive a bullet, anyway.”
Carmen most of all, Peter agreed, his resolve hardening. “That’s why I need to
make one. So that their power isn’t a problem.”
“What,
gamguns!?” At that, Naku suddenly burst into harsh laughter, scalding Peter with his derision. “Gamguns are a science fiction theory, kid. They don’t exist. You can’t make a gun that just strips a Hero of its power. Trust me, plenty of Villains have tried.”
Glaring at Naku sourly, Peter muttered, “I’m not a Villain.”
Naku’s smirk merely deepened as he turned to push open a blue door. When Peter stepped through, his eyes widened in awe at what he saw. The door opened into a room as large as a baseball diamond. Stacked against the walls were all manner of strength training equipment, weapons stands, work tables, and computer terminals. On the far side of the large room was a shooting lane, the target wall peppered with pock marks and soot from various weapons. There was even a rack full of myriad tools that Peter recognized from his mechanic schooling, with a wearable robot arm currently perched in one of the vises. In this single room, Naku had the means for crafting and practicing with every sort of weapon and biomechanical aid imaginable.
For the first time, Peter started to feel excited for the things he might be able to learn here.

Carmen bolted upright at the sound of furious knocking. Through his bedroom door, down the long hall, and past the dining room and foyer, he heard Celeste’s muffled voice shouting, “_Come on, Carmen, open up!_”
Flinging the sweaty covers away from himself, Carmen launched himself out of bed and snatched up the nearest pair of pants. “You girls have to go,” he hissed, his foot getting stuck halfway through the pant leg. He tossed it aside when he realized he was trying to don Melody’s leather leggings. “_Right now!_”
“Is that bitch still hunting us?” Hope asked, pushing away the duvet that Carmen had thrown over her and sitting up. Her hedgehog spikes had crumpled somewhat from the pillow. “I thought you threw her off our trail.”
“I’ve been trying,” Carmen rasped, tripping over one of his shoes in his haste to reach the next nearest pair of pants. He fell over with a loud thud.
The bathroom door opened, releasing a cloud of steam, and Melody stepped out, her hair wrapped up in a towel and water dripping off her breasts. “What’s all the commotion?”
Sitting up next to Hope, Reverie pushed her singular blue lock of hair behind her ear and drawled, “Carmen’s bird buddy is here.”
“You three need to
leave!” Carmen snapped, shimmying into his pants.
“We could just kill her, too, if you want,” Melody smirked, retrieving her leather leggings from across the room. “I’d invite her to join us, but she’s too focused on her work to take even ten minutes off to relax.”
“I bet she’d be game once she sees Carmen without his trousers,” Reverie grinned.
“I’m just tired of her interrupting our fun,” Hope added, crawling out of bed to dress. “
Please can we kill her?”
“No!” Carmen protested, buttoning a wrinkled shirt. “I need you girls to stay under the radar. You’re useless to me otherwise.”
“Hurtful. I like it,” Reverie snickered lasciviously.
“Don’t think so highly of yourselves,” Carmen snorted dismissively. “From the beginning, I only kept you around for one purpose.”
“Yeah, to kill,” Hope put in helpfully. “Whenever it served you. If your birdy bitch finds out about us, how is that helpful?”
“She doesn’t know,” Carmen muttered, “so you need to lay low. Things are just delicate at present, especially after what you did to Theo. If you kill any more Heroes right now, the Council will label you all Villains.”
“Ugh, that would be a drag,” Melody groaned as she pulled the towel out of her hair. Without her hair done up in the ridiculous mohawk, it looked thin and lanky.
“Just sneak out the window while I go distract her,” Carmen commanded, and with that, he rushed out into the hall.
Celeste looked fit to murder by the time he cracked open the front door. Without awaiting a greeting, she shoved her way inside.
“Celeste, why are you here?” Carmen asked, sidling in between her and the back hallway to redirect her pacing. “I—”
“You know everyone in the Council,” she interrupted, finally stopping to face him. “Who is our handler for local Villains outside of Caledan?”
Carmen frowned in confusion. “Why are… We’ve never been assigned anything outside of Caledan. Why are you looking for Villains—?”
“Retired Villains,” Celeste corrected. “Retired supervillains. They would have the time to train a mentee, and—”
“You mean Wraith?” Carmen sighed. “Celeste, we really should focus on—”
Celeste suddenly spun to look down the back hallway. “What was that?”
Carmen froze and strained his hearing. He probably should have oiled the window.
Celeste looked at his hastily and crookedly buttoned shirt and raised an eyebrow. “Do you have company?”
Carmen could not help but blush heavily beneath her scrutiny.
To his surprise, and indeed his embarrassment, Celeste actually smirked. “And she’s sneaking out the back? You
do know where I come from, right?”
“We’re a bit more… private about… that sorta stuff here on Earth,” Carmen floundered, his face burning.
“I really don’t care,” Celeste shrugged. “Listen, I
really think a retired Villain is the most likely mentor for Wraith. Naku’s the only one in Caledan, and I already confirmed that he doesn’t have a mentee—”
“You went to see Naku!?” Carmen repeated incredulously. “Alone!? Celeste, are you insane!?”
“I had to do something!” Celeste argued. “Clive was a dead end, and I
still can’t find out where those Snap girls are—”
“Those girls aren’t Villains,” Carmen interrupted. “They’re within civilian jurisdiction, not ours! Just leave it alone, Celeste!”
She paused, her mouth hanging on whatever word he had cut off. After a moment, she sealed her lips, her expression closed.
I messed up, Carmen realized, frantically trying to figure out how to salvage this. Celeste’s appearance so early in the morning, while the Snap triplets were right there in the other room, had thrown him off.
Relax, he commanded himself, watching Celeste take a step back and slowly resume her quiet pacing.
Remember we’re still on the same side.
Softening his voice, Carmen amended, “I’m not saying to give up. Just… Let me help. Please. We only need Council approval to partner up when we’re going against a registered Villain. Wraith isn’t, and neither are the Snap girls, so let’s take advantage of that. Show the world that we’re more effective when we work together—and maybe get rid of that law requiring approval in the first place. Remember why we’re here, Celeste. To fix the Council. To fix the laws.”
Celeste finally stopped pacing and turned to face him again. “So help me. Tell me who our handler is so I can find retired Villains outside of Caledan.”
Carmen sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m not saying no,” he prefaced, “but Celeste, can’t you hear yourself? All we have on the guy is a glove with no DNA. You… might be right that he has a rich sponsor, but now you’re chasing down retired
supervillains. These guys are called supervillains for a reason. They’re far more capable than run-of-the-mill Villains. They can hold their own against
Heroes, even if they don’t have power like us. And they’re retired, not conquered, and certainly not reformed. You have to be careful about this. It would not be beneficial to rile them up by questioning all of them. Are you certain this isn’t just rushing down a rabbit hole?”
The guarded look in Celeste's eye turned inward. “I know,” she muttered. It was the first time Carmen had heard her sound even vaguely uncertain of herself. “I just don’t want to have to wait for Wraith to strike again. There’s no guarantee he’ll leave behind evidence anyway. The glove was a fluke, and it barely gave us anything.”
Carmen nodded, his brow creasing in sympathy. “Let’s take a step back, then. Review his past targets. Maybe it’ll give us a clue about where he’ll strike next. Have we run a Hapsin simulation yet?”
“Not even enough info to pick a Merrigold-Chek’ta parameter,” Celeste countered.
“Well, we’re superheroes,” Carmen grinned. “We’ve got instinct. Let’s use that.”
Celeste gave him a long look before releasing a quiet sigh. “Alright,” she finally agreed. “But if we don’t get any leads, I’m going to keep questioning the retired supervillains.”
Carmen smiled in secret relief. He thought he had successfully kept her off of the Snap triplets’ trail for now. And hopefully the girls had enough time to get far enough away.
~
Celeste left Carmen to rebutton his shirt and flew to the nearest high rooftop to overlook the gleaming city of Caledan. Since the day she had met Carmen almost six years ago, she had thought she could trust him.
So how long had he been misleading her? And why?

Just as Peter stepped into Naku’s underground training room, he heard a loud, productive cough coming from the right, and he spun in alarm. Sitting against a table was a sickly man with long, stringy hair combed back from his forehead. A crooked-toothed smile twisted his narrow face askew, and his silver eyes looked wild and giddy against his pasty complexion. Narrowing his eyes, Peter could not help but think the man looked familiar.
It was not until the man stood and shuffled forward, reaching up a hand to scratch at his scalp, that Peter realized why he recognized the stranger. Replace the pressed shirt and pants with tattered rags, and it was obvious who the man was. That night the psychotic Snap triplets had attacked the tram where Peter and Delia had run into Tony, the vagabond had been on the train, too. At the time, Peter had been wary of the unkempt man, even though it had been the three teenagers who had ended up being the dangerous ones. Peter had fought the Snap girls to protect Delia, but it was Celeste who ended up stopping them. She had crashed into the tram, ripping it in half so violently that it had flung several civilians into open air, himself included, before Celeste managed to bear them all to safety. Peter vividly recalled the image of the sickly vagabond reaching out a hand in an attempt to catch Peter as he fell.
Scratching idly at the back of his scalp, the sickly man mused, “Ah, so he finally arrived.”
Letting the door swing shut behind him, Naku stepped past Peter to join the snuffling little man. The vagabond looked minuscule beside the giant. Turning back to Peter, Naku stated, “Allow me to introduce you to my colleague, Vibes.”
Peter frowned. Vibes? He had heard that name before… Eyes widening in realization, he stated, “You’re the Villain who trained Kason.”
Pure delight filled the man’s crazy eyes. “You’ve heard of me! All the way out here!” Elbowing Naku in the side, he piqued, “I
told you I could be inspiring!”
Crossing his beefy arms, Naku cast an irked look towards the twitchy little man and snorted, “The kid says he’s not a Villain.”
If possible, Vibes’ crazy smile stretched even
wider. Yet despite the clear insanity, for the first time, Peter thought he saw a sinister gleam in those silver eyes. “You’re not a Villain?” he repeated, directing the statement at Peter. His voice was thin and wiry, simultaneously light-hearted and threatening.
With both men grinning at him as if he was a foolish child, Peter’s anger began to boil within him. “No, I’m not,” he snapped. “And I never will be.”
“You sound so sure,” Vibes piped. “Given that you came to a
Villain for help.”
“I want to learn, and apparently you want to teach,” Peter retorted. “I can’t go to a Hero for training, so I’ll settle for a Villain.”
Vibes rolled his eyes and puffed out his cheeks. “Heroes, Villains… You make it sound like the difference actually matters.”
“It does,” Peter snapped hotly. “I am
not a
Villain.”
“Tell me, boy,” Naku suddenly barked. “What is the difference between a Hero and a Villain?”
Peter scoffed. What kind of question was that? “For one,” he retorted, “Heroes have power. For another, Villains are the bad guys—”
“Wrong,” Naku interrupted, and Vibes began snickering. “It has nothing to do with ‘good guys’ and ‘bad guys.’ You see, like Heroes, Villains are trying to
fix things. We’re just doing it in a different way, forced to do so because of the corrupted
system.”
Peter shook his head, frowning. “But Vibes was training Kason to be a Villain. I know for a fact he had no interest in ‘fixing’ anything.”
“Kason would never have been a Villain,” Naku said with a slight hint of disgust. “He was not an… idealist.”
“Kason was just a way to get your attention,” Vibes interrupted. He smiled thinly. “It worked, didn’t it? You knew him as he was before—and you saw what he had become. You saw the benefit to having a mentor. A Villain, no less.”
A chill settled at the base of Peter’s skull, slowly creeping down his spine. It was all… planned…? “How could you possibly know that would work?” he asked quietly.
Vibes just grinned. “I got a feeling.”
Glancing between the two Villains, Peter had to restrain himself from taking a wary step back. “So… why?”
Naku held his gaze steadily as he answered, “We have our reasons.”
The non-answer sounded significantly more threatening now than it had at Naku’s front door. Peter studied the two men with increasing suspicion, embittered by their recalcitrance. What did two Villains want with him? Why
him? Were they planning on using him as a pawn, just as they had Kason?
You need training, he reminded himself. He had failed and failed and failed, and he needed a win. He needed what the Villains could teach him. He
needed this.
Whatever the Villains wanted him for did not matter. His only goal was to kill Carmen. Then he would get the hell out of Caledan. But for now… for the sake of getting what he needed from them… he supposed he could play along.

2023.03.26 20:24 Dracosia Deserted in the shadows, part 7 (NOP fanfic)
Memory transcription subject: Vartek, Venlil extermination officer
Date [standardized human time]: November 3, 2136
The last days had been surprisingly happy and peaceful. The scientists discovered a small variety of different plants and some tiny herbivores, that allowed them to piece together not just a simple food chain, but a shockingly complicated web, which described the flow of nutrients in the ecosystem. We found some simple decomposers that took apart dead matter like driftwood or dead animals and made it useable again, some small woolly mammals that fed on the plants near the river, some more fish that scavenged the river for anything edible that came flowing downstream from the more habitable zones. What we did not find was a single predator. And with every day without a predator, the mood of the team improved. Even the never pleased center for mission control was overjoyed by our smooth progress. The scientists were happy to be safe, Ortsa was happy she didn’t need to use Bob’s weapons - even though she jokingly claimed otherwise - and the extermination officers were happy to earn easy money. We exchanged jokes - last week we even held an official birthday party for Bob the truck, because Mike had been sad he hadn’t had one yet, and Mirva decorated Bob with multiple flowers she had grown in the trucks lab. It was a beautiful sight.
Slowly the humans and the Venlil scientists started to really grow on me, more than I ever had expected them to, and we truly became a team. I really liked Doctor Churchill - even though he preferred to be called Steven, which annoyed me. Humans having two names was weird enough, but if they preferred one of them, why didn’t they just get rid of the other one? Anyways, he was kinda hard to get to talk, but once he did he was a really cool guy. He knew so many stories about life across the galaxy, some real, some fictional, and once he was enthusiastic about something he was an amazing storyteller, you just needed to make sure not to interrupt his flow. Some of my favorite stories - because they also were his favorite stories - were about a mighty creature called dragon, a fire spewing protector that soared through the skies and burned the creatures of evil. Sure, they were predators, but so were humans and those were alright, thus dragons didn’t terrify me.
Furthermore Steven told me that he really wanted to become a dragon if science ever made it possible, at which point I could not help but share his dream. Dragons were strong and almost invulnerable with their powerful scales and mighty teeth. And breathing fire would make exterminating predators a whole lot easier.
And so the days went by, listening to silly and amazing stories, joking around with my new friends, eating good, and enjoying life. And the deeper we drove into the darkness, the more we let our guard down.
There was a mushroom near our truck, feasting on some driftwood. Jane - aka Doctor Jonson, this two name thing was really getting on my nerves - had spotted it a minute ago, and now she and Mirva needed to go outside and take some samples. But going outside was no longer as easy. Due to the near perfect thermal isolation of Bob, his outside - including the doorframe - was frozen in the icy cold temperatures, so Ortsa pressed some buttons to thaw the ice. We used the time that took to put on isolated clothes. Even the Venlil needed to wear those now because of the temperature. And since the remaining light was not sufficient for night vision goggles anymore, and it was too cold to see the landscape with infrared, we needed to put on specific glasses that enhanced Bob’s UV light, so we could see properly on the outside. I really loved how useful that truck was.
On previous explorations like this two exterminators would go outside, but we had decided that was unnecessary, so today I would go with the two, whilst Mike and Farlent staid back. If anything somehow went wrong they would still be close enough to help anyways.
After some more preparations the three of us left Bob and slowly wandered towards the mushroom. Jane took some samples, whilst Mirva took many looks from all directions at the driftwood to determine whether anything else had munched on it. She found some bitemarks of a Kirksa, a small, noseless mammalian with thick fur, that was both a herbivore and a decomposer. Lim and Steven suspected it may also be an omnivore eating small fish and zooplankton on occasion, but we had yet to see proof of that. After looking around quickly to make sure no evil monster or oh so scary fish was nearby, I allowed my eyes to wander around aimlessly. I saw some ice shells flowing down the river, where they would eventually form a hard, icy barrier below which the liquid water would flow. Lifeforms there would be hopefully easier to find because burying through the ice to get to the water would leave obvious traces.
Below the water I saw Blinktern, small bioluminescent zooplankton that was a truly marvelous sight. It swarmed around in blue, glowing swarms forming beautiful patterns below the water. We spotted a filter feeder three days ago that was slightly smaller than a Venlil, a lot thinner and ate those plankton in the thousands. The humans were adamant that it was technically a predator, but it didn’t even have front facing eyes, so that was obviously bullshit.
And then, as I was standing there contemplating nature, I heard a growl behind me. I tried to quickly rip my flamethrower up, but I was too slow.
A furry creature with massive teeth ambushed me, threw me down to the floor with it’s massive paws and immediately tried to kill me with a bite to the neck. I heard Jane and Mirva screaming in the distance and suddenly the happy conversations on the inside of Bob stopped as my team hurried to action. At least the fact that I could hear that meant I wasn’t dead, so my suit must have kept me alive. I felt blood running down my neck, though. Furthermore I had lost any ability to see, because that beast made me loose my stupid goggles. I felt it’s paw, as it simply stepped over me and sprinted towards the screaming scientists. I knew my team was to far away to help, this was a matter of seconds, but how the fuck was I supposed to save them without any light?
I frantically reached around me, praying that I would find anything that could help me. I was looking for my goggles - instead I found my flamethrower. Right, that would work.
I shot a flame into the sky and it illuminated the area. I saw a predator the size of a Venlil trying to attack the two flower girls, which were clawing and screaming at it to try and scare it away. Interestingly enough Mirva, who had always been easily scared, was standing in front of Jane, as if she wanted to protect her human friend. If I wanted to save both I needed to act now, because that silly Venlil would get herself killed with moves like that!
I only had a couple of seconds of light and if I missed I would kill them both, but I wasn’t nervous at all. A calm certainty took hold of me, as I allowed this image to be burned into my eyes and memory. I turned of the flamethrower, aimed it right at the point I remembered the foul beast to stand and pulled the trigger. It was -literally- a shot in the dark. But I still saw the monster so clearly in my mind , that I knew I would hit.
Fire filled my field of view as the darkness of Venlil Prime’s nightside was replaced by a flash of burning light and the silence was broken by a roar of pain. The predator tried to flee, but after it jumped away it was finally far enough from us for Ortsa to line up a clean shot. A beam of focused gamma rays hit the creature right in the brain. There was a mundane click, and then it just fell over dead. No visible wounds, no life in its eyes. Just a single click, like current running trough an electric fence, and it was dead. Something about that was more horrifying than the predator. If its eyes were closed it would look like it was peacefully asleep, but I knew from Ortsa’s previous explanations that it’s brain was probably liquified now.
Seconds later David - Doctor Schneider I barely remembered his second name to be - and Lim ran out of the Truck and picked me up to carry me back inside, whilst Jane and Mirva were looking at me with a terrified expression.
I didn’t understand why they were making such a fuss, but then I saw the trail of blood on the floor. For a second my brain felt really fuzzy and my head very light.
And then the world turned completely black.

2023.03.26 20:11 Paperswisscheese Mediocre Games, Good Music😤😤 / Long Thread
Naming three off the top of my head: Third Birthday (Parasite Eve 3), Sonic 06, Final Fantasy 13. Also I need Soundtrack recommends🙂🙂
-
Remixed songs of Parasite Eve 3 are out of this world, I highly recommend the soundtrack at least for those few remixes of the original ost. Out of Phase, Arise Within You, Primal Eyes. Don't know how to categorize the music genres...if I had to guess probably / Techno, Synth, BreakBeat, Rock.
I think by the third game Square lost the rights to call it Parasite Eve, don't know why. I get the feeling the author of the original novels wanted nothing to do with the script they were cooking😂😂😭Fair enough. Honestly, though it might be something more simple like they just forgot to renew the rights to use the name.
-
Sonic 06 goes without saying. You might find better remixes of the songs in Sonic Generations or by the fans. Because Sonic Fans are crazy talented fr fr. If you told me 80% of them were modders/game coders I'd believe you cause Sonic Team gives these guys lots of free room for their Ip.
Some of my favorites are Dusty Desert, Kingdom Valley, Flame Core (Volcano), and Radical Train (Chase). The Stage Songs would fit right in a game like Sonic Unleashed, the more I think about it. They got that semi Adventure/Unleashed feel, a very diverse Soundtrack just like the two games mentioned. None of the songs mentioned were techno based, if I could try categorizing them it be Drum and Bass, Rock, and a little bit of Blues inspired...I think...
-
I don't like this game😂😂I'm not posting 13/2 or 13/3 (Lightning Returns) because those are genuinely good games.
13/2's Combat System gives you more to do even though it follows the base outline of Final Fantasy 13's. It was genuinely fun hunting down the Secret Boss Fights in game and seeing how far you could level up by late playthroughs. 13/3 is by far the biggest divergent of the Fabula Nova Crystalis series, it's not difficult to master imo because elements of the Combat System are taken from base 13 so it does feel like a natural evolution of the game.
Final Fantasy 13 is a mix of Electronic, Melody Repetition, Orchestra, and Violins. Lots and lots of Violins. The sequels are mostly the same though I'll mention that 13/3's is pretty weak. I think 13/2's is better than both games.

2023.03.26 20:06 totallytoless242 Entitled Boss tries to ban calculators from the SAT
I’m a teacher in a small private school in the Caribbean. I am local (my family has been here for literally centuries) but my principal (whom I’ll call P from now on) and vice-principal (VP) are expats from the US of A, and neither of them really understands how to run a high school effectively. I’m not saying their nationality is the reason. I have worked with amazing teachers from around the world, US teachers in particular. It’s just that for P (who’s also the owner of the institution) the school was established as a pet project back in the 70's so she’d have something to do while her husband was at work at his multi-million dollar company. VP moved here about ten years ago, but she’s never been interested in assimilating into the local community, preferring to hang out in gated communities with other expats. She likes having a job she’s not qualified for (as she has no training in educational management), and she relishes the fact that she got the VP position over qualified local teachers simply because her blonde hair, blue eyes, and Carolina accent remind P of her daughter.
It’s been hell working at this school because VP is a megalomaniac. She will tell you that the grass is purple, and when you try to correct her - no matter how kindly and knowledgeably - she will insist that the grass is purple and then make you paint the grass purple for her so she can prove she’s right. The only reason I stay at this school is that I love my coworkers, the students are super sweet, and I’m the breadwinner of my household until hubby is done with university, but sometimes my VP is so fucking insane that I want to whack that mole with a kanabō.
One of the best examples of this behavior was during my first year teaching at this school. I had only been a teacher for two years prior, but I’d had quite a bit of experience with national and international exams. I’d tutored the SAT since college, and I’d proctored several SAT sittings at my previous school. It’s safe to say that I knew the exam pretty well, and I kept up to date with changes to make sure my kids were always ready.
Now, I’ll save the backstory for another post (because it's juicy!), but during my first year, VP had an arch-nemesis. To be honest, VP has an arch-nemesis every year. It really is like some bad anime. My coworkers and I think VP targets someone every "season" to use as a scapegoat/sacrifice for her ineptitude. She blames all the school’s problems (which are usually 75% VP's fault) on that single person so that she can convince P to fire them and claim that all the school's problems have been exorcised with that teacher. But this particular teacher was a hurricane. Long story short, this math teacher (MT) was crazy, but she was a great counter to VP’s insanity. They got into fights all the time, and one of the stupidest fights was over calculators for the SAT.
Our school had just been certified as an SAT center, and we were going to have our first SAT sitting, but VP honestly believed that our school was going to be the first school ever in my country to host the SATs. Never mind that several coworkers and I had taken SATs and APs in high school here in my home country. VP told P that she was single-handedly introducing CollegeBoard to this country, and in P’s eyes, everything VP said was gospel truth.
VP was extremely nervous about hosting the SAT. She was anxious that representatives from CollegeBoard would waltz in during the exam and find something out of order that would get our center shut down. She ignored advice from seasoned SAT proctors because they "weren't American", so how would they know anything about an American exam? Because VP was so nervous and completely moronic, she somehow misread the SAT manual; hence, the following drama ensued:
Two days before the first SAT sitting at our school, MT barges into my classroom during one of my planning periods, steam pouring out of her ears. Behind her is a crowd of 11th graders, wailing and yelling.
"That bitch has lost her mind, OP!"
Horrified by MT's language in front of our students, I race to my door, usher MT in, and shut out the kids. I ask her what's wrong.
Apparently, VP showed up during MT's class with 11th grade, who were all signed up to take the SAT that Saturday, and announced that NO calculators were allowed in the examination room. She claimed that after thoroughly reading the SAT manual, it was clear that the SAT did not require calculators and, thus, if any student were to bring a calculator to the exam on Saturday, VP would expel them from the center.
I was stunned. I'd been tutoring the SAT for some time, and while I didn't tutor math, I knew that there was an entire section of the SAT that required a calculator. However, I also knew that just a few weeks prior to this debacle, VP and MT had gotten into a huge argument about calculators. According to VP, MT was teaching our high-school students to rely too heavily on calculators, which was a sign that MT wasn't qualified to teach math. It was obvious that banning calculators from the SAT exam was not a mandate from CollegeBoard but rather a poorly understood at best and insidious at worst ploy to validate VP's disapproval of MT.
MT demands I talk some reason into VP. While I ain't no fan of MT, I'm worried about our students. It was their examination that was being jeopardized by the petty feud between VP and MT. However, I'd had enough experience with VP to know that, in this situation, the grass was purple, and no amount of arguing was going to convince her otherwise. The woman is like a rhino - when she runs, she runs full-force forward. So, I decide to go straight to the headwoman, P, but before I do, I print off an up-to-date copy of the SAT manual straight from CollegeBoard's official website and read over the calculator rules just to make sure. Can you believe it? Calculators WERE allowed. I shove the manual in a folder and walk over to the administrative office.
I arrive at P's office and ask our secretary if P has time to speak to me privately. Unfortunately, VP just so happens to be in the vicinity and before I can even take a seat on P's couch, VP enters P's office and takes a seat across from me. P, of course, sees nothing suspicious about this and asks me to explain what was so urgent that I had to meet with her so abruptly. I can tell VP knows: she's got this weird coy smirk on her face, but I ignore the desire to scrub it off with acid.
I explain to P the situation: how there's been a misunderstanding about the use of calculators in the SAT exam; how our registered students are scared and confused about the banning of calculators; how it is absolutely fine, and probably necessary, for students to use a calculator for a certain section of the math test. I see P's laptop on the couch, and (forgetting my print copy in my folder) I ask P if I can use it to show VP the up-to-date SAT manual. At this point, I don't want to shame VP. Shaming her would only cause more strife, as she is a vengeful woman. I place the laptop in VP's lap and show her the rules about calculators - how there's a list of dozens of accepted calculators for the exam. VP lets out this disgusting half-sigh, half-croaking noise she makes when she realizes she's wrong or has done something stupid. Then, I reach for the laptop so that I can show the manual to P.
Ya'll, before I can take the laptop, VP presses the power button and shuts the laptop down cold! Then, she casually closes the top panel and lays the laptop on the couch farthest away from P. She tells P that I've only confirmed what she already knew: that calculators are NOT allowed in the SAT room. People, I couldn't feel my body. It was like my flesh had turned into TV static. How could VP blatantly lie like this? The proof was right there!!!
Of course, P believes VP entirely. P tells me that under NO circumstances are calculators allowed on campus during the SAT because, as VP has already told her, if a representative from CollegeBoard shows up and sees a calculator, our center will be shut down. P is even considering banning calculators from campus indefinitely. I mean, who needs them right? Not trigonometry, geometry, and calculus students!
It was at that moment that I remember that I have a copy of the SAT manual in the folder on my lap. Just as casually as VP had been with the laptop, I take out the printed manual, turn to the page on calculators, get nice and cozy in the seat next to P, and read the manual next to her with my finger on each word, explaining everything I'd said about calculators. I also turn to the front cover to show her the year this manual was issued - that very season. P is amazed.
"Oh, VP! Calculators ARE allowed. The manual you were looking at must have been old."
Ya'll, I know that was bullshit. I know P is just as insane as VP, but I didn't correct P. You may disagree with my inaction, and so does my heart, but I had just won a major battle. I was drained by having to prove the truth was the truth and facts were facts. At that point, I only cared about my students. VP glares at me with the fakest smile and says how happy she is I had a printed, updated copy of the SAT manual to show them before the exam.
It's been a few years since this happened. I wish I could say that VP is no longer with us, but sadly, she's still here causing chaos. MT was fired that June. VP is as resilient as a cockroach and eats P's shit like chocolate cake, so I've had to learn how to deal with her until I can make the next step in my career. However, this story does have a happy ending. My students were able to bring their calculators to the exam during that first sitting without a hitch. I made sure of it, as I was the admissions officer that Saturday. VP has never pushed her argument further either. It's hard, I suppose, to refute cold, hard facts, but what's funny is that whenever VP and I discuss me proctoring the next SAT exam, she reminds me of that hilarious time MT tried to get calculators banned from the SAT. Ya'll, I nearly fainted the first time VP said this, and she was so confident!!! Laughs like it was a quirky mistake that some idiot made. I usually tell her how I remember the incident rather differently than she does, and every once in a while when I'm feeling randy, I go so far as to say, "Wasn't that you?" It feels good to see VP's face turn into a beet.
P.S. I know my stories are long, but I think, just like pulp, the juice is in the details, and I've got loads, especially about my entitled bosses. If you want to hear some even more incredible stories about VP and P, let me know. My fingers are itching!

2023.03.26 19:19 Twi19 Aerthrandir's Letter to Lilissen: #1
17 Seabright Drive
Marsember, Cormyr
19 Uktar, 736 BC
The envelope is lumpy- inside, along with several sheets of parchment, is a deep green seashell, streaked with black.
Dear Meriada,
Oh, I have missed you dearly.
It is deeply fortunate that your letter came when it did- as you settle in from travel, I’m about to depart. Well, depart again- it’s been quite a busy year since the mist has let us go. I’ve attached a rough itinerary of my travels for the next few months- mail about a week ahead of where I’ll be, and I will most likely receive it.
I have so much to tell you I’m not sure where to start- so I’ll take your cue here, and begin with the obvious. Strahd, and the aftermath thereof.
I am glad to hear your nightmares have abated- though it seems you fought tooth and nail to put them back where they belonged. I do not envy you the task- though it does make me happy to see you approaching it with the same rigor and determination you bring to the rest of your life. Let that long shadow pass, it will not forever keep us in its shade. For my part, I’ve had a different problem. I left Barovia bright-eyed and keen as a razor, ready to shred my old life and start anew- stop living in the past and accept what wonders mortality and time had to give me.Life, as ever, was not that simple.
I gathered myself and trekked off to Aufstra, determined that I’d shatter all the chains tying me to the past in one fell swoop- rip the bandage off, get it all over with. I’d set fire to my past life as easily as I set fire to my cabin- and then I’d finally be free. Free to…Free to do something. I hadn’t thought that far ahead. Honestly, I’m not sure I was thinking, period.I made it to Aufstra’s ruins- and at first everything was going according to plan. I’d read, before, in some book or another, that people need closure on things that they never saw die. I figured that if I actually walked into the place, saw what time and neglect had made of what I had once loved, that that would be the push I’d need to move on. Get on with things, go enjoy my phenomenal magical power and my immense wealth and my gorgeous girlfriend. Stop dwelling on things, like a damn fool.Except.Except when I woke up on my first morning there, I found the Aufstran sun still shone as brightly and kindly as it had when I was a child. The waves were still crystal blue. And, given a century to recover, the ruins had been reclaimed by vegetation and time to where they were the most beautiful things I’d ever seen. Toppled, yes. But still striking in their simple majesty.Meriada, I fell back in love.More accurately, it was as though I’d never left- I cleared out a living space near the ruins of my family’s home, and soon I was taking morning swims on the same beach that I had every day since I was able to walk. I read books that time and damp had yet to ruin, I explored toppled buildings like I was a teenager searching intently for old coins and ancient ghosts. It was… perfect. It didn’t help that the ruins contained an absolute glut of information relevant to my historical work- I’d been dreaming of coming back here for decades, so it was very easy to get drawn into a dozen different projects now that I was actually back. Soon I was spending my days taking rubbings of toppled gravestones and using long lengths of twine to reconstruct the paths that the old streets once followed. It was an archeological dig, where I could set my own agenda and follow my own whims. It was nostalgia and duty and grief all rolled into one.I could’ve stayed there forever, Meriada. Why would I ever leave?I had money to buy essential supplies whenever it came up- preserved food, flour, cooking oil. I had the power to intimidate or kill whatever threats came my way. And I had the magic to check in occasionally with my loved ones, so they’d know I was alive and… okay. And I had enough work to do that I could bury myself forever and never, ever have to think about wolves or ghouls or the sound a friend made when she went up in flames. It was perfect. It was pure. It was the worst fucking decision I could’ve ever made. And so four months passed, summer fading to autumn, as I laid down in my grave and began spooning dirt back onto my coffin. I was making splendid progress on my work, my skin was tan and warm, and I could start to see the sun-streaks in my hair again. I had started outgrowing my little makeshift camp, and was seriously considering refurbishing one of the less ruined buildings and making a home here. But fortunately, even though I am so often a moth to folly’s candle, there are other lights in this world. And four of them served to draw me out of my fugue. Two, you’re quite familiar with- a pair of tieflings, who both stalwartly refused to let me drown in my self-imposed isolation.
Amity, I expected- she’d given me a number of scrolls of Dream before my trip, and I treasured each nighttime visit I had with her like fourteen-karat gold. She’s taken a much more sensible and interesting path than me, you know- she’s a monster hunter now, like Ezmerelda. Odd that there seems to be a niche for brilliant spellcasters with awesome leg prosthetics, but she’s filling it well. Medium, spirit channeler, savior of those too weak to save themselves- I can’t count the number of times I was pulled away from study for a quick chat or a consult about a particular monster’s weaknesses. I half-resented the interruption, then- now I am eternally thankful for it.But Lucian- I did not expect him to do as much as he did. When we’d parted, I’d left him a sending stone- both as a practical measure and a gesture of care and connection. I had expected that he would, at best, not throw it away- and that I might be able to catch him occasionally and find out how he was doing every year or two. What I had not expected was that we would end up talking as often as we did.
At first, it was mostly bookkeeping and business. I sent him a message to make sure he’d made it to Waterdeep alright. He sent me one asking for help with a letter of reference when he needed to open a bank account. And so on. We kept a respectful distance. And then, one night, I got very, very drunk on a store of Captain Salamander’s worst rum, and sent him no less than nine Sendings at about three in the morning. I don’t remember what they were about- he does, but he refuses to tell me. Says it’s for my own good, which is not a sentiment you want to hear from *Lucian.*Regardless, when I had woken up the next morning, Lucian sent me a message asking what, precisely, was my problem. When I hastily and shamedly explained, his next Sending was whatever the equivalent is of twenty-five words of hysterical laughter.
And then we kept in touch. He would ask me about my day and the progression of my “nerd shit”, while I’d try to keep abreast of his latest exploits in Waterdeep and his dealings with the aftermath of Barovia. (Meriada, I think you may find that you’re not alone in your quest to put horrible dreams back in their place.) It was informal and intermittent and vulgar. And it may have helped save my life.As for the other two lights, and the shock to action which brought me out of that horrible place? Well, I’ll have to expand on those next time- I have actually run out of parchment, which is probably a sign from the gods of brevity that I’ve gone a bit overboard. Be well, Meriada, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Your friend, always,
Aerthrandir Aereal
PS: On the topic of a ward against fire- I’ve done some research, and will pass along more as I learn. For now, it appears you’re far from the first to wish for such a thing- though finding fire immunity looks to be a difficult task. If I were you, I would look into certain artifacts resonant with the Elemental Plane of Fire, as well as a few of the items forged by the Cult of Tiamat during their attempt at resurrecting the goddess. I think, regrettably, that any attempt at a perfect ward will mean mastering fire, not defying it. Good luck.
PSS: I hope you like the shell.

2023.03.26 19:05 Teguterror An Honest Dominion
Okay, here’s my attempt at a NOP fanfic.
The Nature of Predators is made by
u/SpacePaladin15 Just a few tidbits before we get started. I’m not sticking close to the cannon, so don’t be surprised when groups operate differently from their real NOP counterparts. I’m going for a “dark time line” kind of situation. There are going to be war crimes and lots of devil’s advocate nonsense, so this fanfic may rustle your jimmies. The start of this story takes place on Sillis and is only told from a single Arxur supply officer’s POV.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Memory transcription subject: Varce, Cattleship Δ1242, Sillis Date [standardized human time]: December 4, 2136 Finally… After mindlessly double checking and triple checking weapons and herbivore feed inventory it was time to get some fresh air. The raid itinerary had originally slated us to landfall 36 hours ago, but then a small human fleet lurched into our FTL disruptor grid. The grid was deployed with the intent to prevent prey ships from escaping, but hey, happy accidents.
I looked around the squad that I would be overseeing during prey extraction. Their faces ranged from agitated to giddy, all hungry. Starvation prior to deployment was standard practice for lower enlisted. It made them extra violent which was perfect for propaganda. Having a full relaxed Arxur on shift wouldn’t be near as terrifying for the pseudo-sapient snack bags.
Of course not all were starved, officers like myself needed to keep a cool head while procuring desperately needed food for the people of Wriss. It is my job, as one of the Dominion’s loyal servants, to ease the suffering of sapient lives throughout the known universe. I should clarify, that while I am somewhat defective, I’m not some delusional prey loving nut-job. I just care about sapients more that the average Arxur, that’s all.
The cargo doors of the craft hissed open as eye burning natural light entered the space. After I recovered from my temporary blindness, I barked out orders to my subordinates and began driving the refrigeration cart out of the ship. Its anti-gravity motors hummed as Arxur marched alongside it. Except for Tarth, lazy ass was perched on the cart’s lid with a ranged rifle shouldered. He says he does it to “be a lookout”, but we both know that’s bullshit. I let him get away with it though, what’s the point of having authority if you don’t use it to let your friend do stupid crap?
We had been dropped off at ground zero of a conventional bombing zone. Ruble from buildings with twisted bit of chitin sticking out covered the ground. Troops passed any worthwhile pieces to the cart for preservation. Eating of scraps was forbidden. It would spoil the squad's appetite prior to any engagements with the tilfish survivors. Thinking about the impending carnage reminded me to activate the 360’ camera fixed atop the cart’s driver compartment. Maybe some of my footage would go into one of the hunting compilations that gets forcibly broadcast onto the media channels the prey’s young watch. I let out a throaty chuckle thinking about the fearful cries one of those forsaken abominations would make.
Tarth looked over to me. “What’s so funny blubber tail? All that prime officer food finally melt your brain.”
“No just thinking about the prospect of one of our hunts being used for entertainment, now get back to work “look-out”.”
“Eh… I’m not too sure any footage is going to be used from this raid. None of the Gojid Cradle footage got used since the brass didn’t want Arxur to be associated with killing sapients.”
“...True. Well I’ll film this anyway, maybe it could be used as b-roll footage for future human engagement training.”
“I’d prefer we didn’t run into any humans boss-man”
I grimaced at the thought, the chatty Arxur had a point.
I’ve never killed a sapient before. I had pushed the idea out of my head before, but it all came back to me. The whole reason Chief Hunter Shaza deployed 8000 of her ships to Sillis was to fight the humans, the tilfish were an afterthought in truth. I don’t really get why the humans were so keen on picking a fight with the Dominion. Chief Hunter Isif saved their entire species and in turn they started rattling a saber at Chief Hunter Shaza’s initial raiding group. Do they want to be at war with both the Federation AND the Dominion. Surely they understand that that would be a death sentence for such a small race with no backup colonies. It’s just so frustrating, we finally meet another sapient race and all they want to do is fight. We should be working together to wipe out the genocidal maniacs in the Federation.
“Hey Varce. Varce. Looks like that building over there is ripe for hunting. Just say the word.”
I perked up after being pulled from my dark thoughts. We were no longer surrounded by rubble and were at our first scheduled stop. A eugenics clinic that was likely filled with eggs that would top off the cart I brought along. I glanced at the life detection hardware built into the driver’s panel.
“Listen up. We’re here for the eggs in that building. It has 33 adult tilfish life signs inside. Don’t bother taking any of them alive, just put a hole in their heads and dump them in the cart. Eggs are our priority. EGGS. Don’t get too bite-y. There’s a bomb shelter down the road for that kind of behavior. Now get to it and make the Prophet proud!”
I stood by with Tarth and several auto-turret technicians as the rest of the squad swarmed all sides of the clinic. Per standard procedure, I had the techs set up an auto-turret for any surprise runaways. After a couple of minutes a tilfish on the second floor desperately crawled part way out of a window trying to escape. It fell to the ground after Tarth took out one of its weight bearing feet. The impact ruptured it chitin and it died shortly after. As Tarth began strolling over to retrieve the soon to be refrigerated carcass, several more tilfish landed on top of the now flattened meat pulp. Tarth threw himself to the ground as the auto-turrets made there tell-tell beeping noise. Now Tarth had to carry back three piles of meat pulp.
Tarth sat the meat piles down in front of the cart while laughing. “Prophet help me. My life just flashed before my eyes. That would’ve been such an underwhelming way to go. Thank the prophet I’m a master at dodging.”
“I wouldn’t exactly call collapsing to the ground in terror “masterful”, but yeah sure. At least your not dead. Now lets get this slop cleaned up and preserved.”
“Your just jealous of how awesome I looked. Also, that ankle shot I did was glorious. Admit it.”
Tarth went on stroking his ego for the next half hour as the cart was filled with delicious nutritious eggs and gooey bug parts. The cart’s driver panel indicated that we had gathered about 10,000LBS of food in total. A good haul so far, that would be enough to feed roughly a 140 Arxur for a week. I sent the cart back to the ship with an escort while everyone else headed to the nearby bomb shelter.
--------------------------------
Once we arrived at our next scheduled location, courtesy of
garbage prey internet security, I had the auto-turret techs set up a perimeter around the shelter entrance. It’s not likely that someone would pull a fast one on us, but I’ve never been into gambling. While we waited for fresh empty carts to arrive, I went ahead and had the squad look around for any material to block up the bomb shelter’s ventilation ports.
After even more waiting, four refrigeration carts and some shelter cracking materials arrived. The plan for shelter cracking was tried and true. First, we would have a drill bore out a hole through the blast door. That would then rapidly be followed up with a flash bang to scare off anyone smart enough to shoot through the hole. This is then followed by several tear gas canisters and a smoke machine. The smoke would exit any ventilation ports and they would be subsequently sealed. After all that we then pump the place full of nitrous oxide, wait about 20 minutes, and breach the doors.
Often times there will be one or two prey smart enough to wear self-contained breathing apparatuses. For this reason, once the door is opened we send in something similar to what a human would refer to as a “Claymore Roomba”. About 20 seconds after activating the device I heard a loud BANG and sent in the initial breaching party. After the all clear, the carts and myself entered.
Oh no. Near the entrance to shelter was what was left of four humans. SAPIENTS. I killed sapients. I gave the order. They are my responsibility. I’m effectively a murderer now. I know that it’s “war”, but still. That doesn't un-kill them. I choked down my horror remembering what would happen if other Arxur saw me like this. I turned to Tarth. “Inspect these four for any useful equipment or identifying information. After that, bring it all to me”
I turned away and kept walking. I couldn’t look at their mutilated faces anymore, shards of clear poly-carbonate lodged in their skulls from the breathing mask they were wearing. Blackened blood peppering their bodies and surroundings. Those were someones kids, friends, lovers, and I took them away. I just destroyed families in one foul swoop.
I cleared my head as i walked into the auditorium filled with drowsy and unconscious tilfish. I ensured the cameras on all of the carts were on and gave the order. What came next was
quite the sight.
The little abominations screeched and squealed as my squad tore into them. Ripping the young away from the dazed brood-mothers, tearing the monsters apart like they deserved. Loyal and dedicated soldiers finally filling their stomachs after days of hunger. This is what it’s all about.
Bringing smiles to the faces of sapients. At this moment I could finally forget about the atrocity that happened to those four in the previous room. I started to salivate myself a little, I shouldn’t indulge though. This is a reward to the Arxur people, not me.
I cheerily hummed as the weak tilfish were tossed into the refrigeration carts. The cold would slow them down to nothing, but it wouldn’t kill them. Perfectly convenient for filling the cages back on the cattle ships. Watching over the cart’s weight readouts I guesstimated that this would be enough to feed about 680 Arxur for a week.
It makes me so proud thinking about all the young wonderful Arxur that will get to enjoy these meals. How they’ll go to sleep with full bellies and grow strong. No deformations from malnutrition. Perfectly formed jaws with clean straight teeth. Unlike mine, jagged, crisscrossed, and malformed. I’ll make sure that they have better lives then me. It’s the least I could do.
These thoughts were short-lived unfortunately. Tarth approached me with a bag crafted from the same materials as the pelts the humans wear. I took it silently and he went off to go get his fill.
I dug through the “backpack” as I would later identify it. The pack contained weapons, ammo, and holopads. Turns out the holopads required biometerics, but Tarth was kind enough to attach the associated severed thumbs to each. I went through and altered the security preferences to myself on all of them and glossed through one’s photo album.
I knew what I was going to see, but I
punished myself anyway. The dead human had a mate. Whether or not it was a temporary relationship, I don’t know. They had pictures of themselves standing in front of various earth locations. Monuments, beautiful scenes of nature you’d never see on a federation planet, relaxed on furniture with a furry quadrupedal predator.
Things I’ve never seen in person and likely never will. I robbed the human of all of this.
I put away the holopad and steeled myself. If I was going to have a breakdown, it would be in my quarters.
I quietly waited for the final stages of the shelter raid to wrap up and began planning the next step of today’s festivities. The entire squad would escort the refrigeration carts back to the cattle ship and we would then exchange them for one refrigeration cart and two cargo carts. After that we would search a nearby tilfish military base for heavy munitions and any high value ship related equipment and materials.
--------------------------------
There was a bit of a delay at Cattleship Δ1242. The other squads were as successful as mine, so we had to wait for a refrigeration cart to be freed up. I took the opportunity to drop off the human pack in my room and check the current raid situation. Thankfully there weren’t any notable hiccups in the raid from a global perspective. The human FTL clusterfuck only shorted us a few ships and part of the fleet was in process with salvaging them for FTL drives, fuel, FTL disruptors, inertial dampeners, shield generators, and databases containing flight logs and encryption keys.
After the update, I reconvened with my squad and gave them a run down on the status of the raid. Tarth already hopped up onto the refrigeration cart before I even got to it. Lazy ass.
--------------------------------
We were still about a half mile out from our destination when Tarth perked up and swung his rifle around toward a concrete building. I trailed his the direction his rifle was pointing to see a rather peculiar sight. A white human pelt that was tied to a stick by the arms was being waved around. However, who was holding it was hiding behind part of the building.
Before I could say anything Tarth already sent a round through the pelt.
“OH SHIT. Uhh… Hey in human culture white flags are a universal symbol of “I give up. Please don’t shoot me” okay?”
My thoughts shot back to the four mutilated corpses I left back in the bomb shelter. Icy guilt crept down my back and left my tail with pins and needles. I sighed for a moment and waved Tarth to lower his gun.
“Alright human, come out slowly, we won’t shoot you.”
A fleshy claw-less hand poked out from the wall and waited.
I grumbled as the weak predator peaked out. “When I said slowly, I meant some time today. I have a schedule to keep.”
“Sorry. Was just taking it slow. Figured if someone with a hair trigger got any ideas, it’d be better to lose a hand than a life.”
The human was one of the paler variants. It had a smashed in muzzle like the rest of its kind. Not exactly what I’d call an apex predator, but I’d tolerate it. (
It… He I think?) He carried two large green storage cylinders on his back and was wearing the standard blue helmet uniform. At his hip was a belt carrying various bobbles and
oh that’s a gun.
“If your surrendering, why do you have a gun?”
“It’s for the crazy murder bugs with the flamethrowers. As long as you bunch are on the ball with killing them, you can have it.”
I grunted at Tarth and nodded him over to the human. He drew the sidearm from the humans holster and inspected it. Tarth being Tarth, then proceeded to start jabbing the human with the weapon gleefully. The human looked over to me pleadingly. He clearly wasn’t thrilled with having a gun poking into his gut.
I spoke up. “Tarth do you intend on wasting our time as well? Get over here. Human, you will stay within ten feet of him or me at all times. Don’t try to run off, I don’t need to explain what will happen if you try.”
“Understood”
Well, at least the human seems to be disciplined enough to not have an attitude.
Our procession continued as I introduced our first official human captive to Tarth and myself. The weaker “social predator” was just as chatty as my slightly defective friend to my disappointment. However, once the topic of our destination came up, my mercy started to pay off.
“You guys are going to the base? Yeah. Fuck that. Don’t go there. That place is an absolute shitstorm. Some empathetic dumb-asses started to let tilfish in so we could protect them from the scary Arxur. I naturally raided supply of their MREs and got the fuck out of there. Lo and behold, before I was even out the gate the tilfish started shooting and burning dudes. Never trust a fuckin’ bug.”
Tarth and I both chuckled at the idea of some empathetic prey lovers getting their comeuppance.
“Despite that, we are still going human. I was assigned to raid the base for goods and you already know where everything is. So try not to get shot or burned until after our objective is completed.”
The human looked dejected. “Well fuck… I should’ve stayed behind that wall. Are you absolutely sure you want to go there. All the functional ships evacuated early yesterday during your surprise attack on the planetary defenses.”
Tarth spoke up. ”Wasn’t much of a surprise really. Not even an hour into the assault and a human fleet of a thousand some odd ships popped in behind us.”
“The UN had an entire fleet show up within an hour of you guys arriving?
“Yes. Although it was pretty short lived. They disabled a few of our shields with some kind of bombs, but it really didn’t matter. We outnumbered them 8 to 1 and just threw a wall of plasma at them. Not a whole lot of defensive positions to be had out in space. Most of them tried to run, but we catapulted FTL disruptor buoys at them and burnt them all. I have no idea what their strategy was there.”
“...Cool. Good to know.”
“You should have seen it. Ships full of foolish humans turning into molten slag. Their corpses ejecting into space and bloating up from the vacuum. Some of them holding onto their pet prey. Maybe we’ll gather up the tasty prey carcasses later, the cold of space preserves meat nicely I hear. I swear I could hear the screams even in space. That’s what it’s like when weak predators try to pick fights with the Arxur. They weren’t smart like you, human.”
The human shut up after that. I suspect the thought of so many of his kin dying likely saddened him. To be fair, I would be too if those were my people. I mean, it sucks that so many sapients died, but I didn’t have a hand in it.
--------------------------------
The entrance to the base was finally in sight. Tarth and the human lounged on the top of the refrigeration cart despite the irritated side glances from the others in the squad. I could smell the stench of burnt flesh wafting towards us from somewhere deeper in the base. It served as a good confirmation that the human wasn’t feeding us bad intel.
I was looking over to the human pleased when gray blood splattered out from the back of his helmet. It took me a second to realize we were being shot at. It took another for me to order my squad to take cover behind the sturdy carts. I ordered the auto-turret techs to deploy their toys to protect our flanks and rear.
Tarth, the human’s corpse, and I all crouched together behind the refrigeration cart. I’d never seen a dead body convulse in such a weird way before, desperately pulling off its helmet and cursing…
Wait. What? The air suddenly reeked of burnt hair and small wisp of smoke coming from the doffed helmet. Tarth gave the living corpse a weird look and shrugged. Questions later, not dying takes precedence.
Tarth and I ensured the aim assist in our rifles was toggled on and proceeded to dispense suppressive fire from behind the cart. Ideally, we could just point our weapons in our adversaries general direction and the rifle’s computer would do the hard part.
The human started panicking when a metal ball dropped next to us. He kicked the sphere away and started cursing in pain while holding his foot.
No surprise there you moronic primate, those black leather foot coverings aren’t going to protect you when you punt a metal ball down the street. Wait... Did that ball just explode? Oh. Yeah. We got briefed on those things come to think of it. Good call monkey-man, your foot didn’t go bruised in vain. As Tarth and I lowered ourselves back down to reload, we suddenly felt the smaller predator forcibly sandwich himself between us. He tightened himself into a tiny ball while wide eyed. I looked around our perimeter. There weren’t any hostile humans so what was his deal. Tarth’s breathing seized up as well, what the hell was going on?
Beep Beep.
It occurred to me at that moment the auto-turrets haven’t been updated to recognize any humans as friendly. I froze up and slowly looked at our flanks. Both turrets were pointing at us. I’ve never pissed myself before… But I got damn close.
The three of us just stayed there perfectly still for what felt like hours. It gave me enough time to think about many things in my life. All the things I haven’t done yet. I’ve never had the opportunity to sire my own clutch, the closest thing I have to a friend is a psycho that gravitates toward me because I’m the only one that tolerates his non-stop yapping, and how nice is it to finally feel the warmth of another pressed up against me.
Holy crap what is wrong with me? Prophet, I’m sorry for being so defective. If you bail me out of this, I’ll do whatever you want, just give me a sign. And the Prophet answered my prayer indeed. Some foolhardy humans finally went for our flanks and drew the ire of the auto-turrets away from us. As the BRRT of the turrets sounded off Tarth, being the absolute bastard that he is, dived away from us.
This left me and the human exposed to the turrets. My initial thought was to push the human over and dive away, so I pushed him over. As I readied myself to dive, I thought about those four in the shelter. How I robbed them of their lives and families. I just couldn't do that again.
I can’t just pretend that it’s not my problem. The human’s eyes showed such sadness from that impending betrayal. So I dived, hoping that I’d be able to hide him from the sensors on the auto-turrets.
Luckily, he was still balled up so it wasn’t terribly difficult to cover him with my body. I never felt so exposed in my life, doing this. I just laid there thinking, waiting, and wondering if my empathy was about to come back to bite me in the ass. This was all so off putting, being this close to another person. I wanted nothing more than to get up and walk away. I could hear his breath and the light tensing of his body. This wasn’t something that really happens with Arxur.
Eventually, the sound of gunfire died down. I heard people milling about, the hiss of medical foam being applied, and the louder hiss of angry Arxur having gunshot wounds treated.
“Uh. Sir?” I heard the confused words of one of the auto-turret techs.
“No no no. Leave him be. Can’t you see our dear leader is in love. Although, that is the UGLIEST woman I’ve ever seen.”
I’ve never wanted to smack that annoying lazy ass more than at this moment. I cleared my throat. “Solider, would you kindly deactivate the auto-turrets so our guide to the base doesn't get shredded by an angry machine.”
“Oh..? Yes. Right away sir.”
So I laid there, feeling a smug ass staring a hole into the back of my head. I recapped the events of the skirmish and lamented how I did so little. I only burned through one magazine with some sprayN’pray and that was it. Hell, the human saved a lot of our asses with that grenade save.
Speaking of the human. “Hey human? Why aren’t you dead? You just took a bullet to the head.”
“Uh. The helmets we wear are really good. They have this non-Newtonian fluid laced with perovskite crystals. Basically, the helmet is a fluid sack that hardens in response to physical trauma. It then converts kinetic energy into heat and electricity. These helmets can eat a .308 point blank. Only downsides are that they are one and done armors and that they’ll burn the shit out of you if they stay in contact too long.”
I’d never heard of such a thing before, but clearly it worked. I’ve seen prey attempt to use helmets with varying degrees of failure. Problem is, usually the brain gets shook around and they die anyway. I decided that this fluid would be beneficial to the Dominion.
I spoke up to get Tarth’s attention. “Tarth. Order anyone that isn’t busy to strip the human’s of their armor pelts and headgear. Place everything in the cargo cart next to the human’s green storage bags.”
Shortly after I gave out the order, the auto turret tech returned. “Varce sir. The auto-turrets have been deactivated.”
I Immediately popped up to separate myself from the smaller predator. Looking around it seems we had fared well enough against the ambush.
Heh. Arxur being ambushed. Crazy times. We only lost 3 soldiers and have a handful of injuries. It could have been a lot worse. Even Tarth has some med foam sticking out of his arm. The Arxur bodies were being loaded into the refrigeration cart. We’d look into harvesting their organs for transplants later.
The human looked over the bodies of his fallen kin. I decided it would be appropriate to talk to him about their deaths. The bodies had been stripped as ordered, although it appears someone got overzealous and stripped one of them of all there pelts.
Wow. That is super gross looking. It’s just like, dangling around on the outside. What happens if it gets caught on something? Does it just tear off and regenerate? That’s just downright terrible design. Getting myself back on topic. I turned to the human and spoke up. “So… Did you know any of these humans?”
“Uh… Yeah. To be honest. They were fucking elitist assholes. Doesn’t mean I wanted them dead though. It’s just well... This is all a fucking mess. They did shoot me in the back of the head though. So it’s kind of hard to not feel schadenfreude about the whole thing… Can I get a new helmet? Mine’s kind of busted right now.”
“Go for it. There should be some next to your stuff in the cargo cart.”
“Thanks. I mean… As in thanks for everything. You saved my ass in a big way. Not a whole lot of people would of done that for me… So thank you... Yeah.”
--------------------------------
The inside of the base had seen better days. Some buildings had been destroyed either by the original raid or the human’s occupation. It also appeared that the exterminator’s fires got out of hand and had spread to the tent city the UN made for their troops. There were quite a few chard human bodies mixed in with the debris. I could certainly understand why the human had no desire to come back.
I got out of the refrigeration cart and announced to my squad. “Apply fire retardant measures. There may be exterminators in this base.”
My fellow Arxur and I pulled out small aerosol canisters and began dousing ourselves in the gelatinous contents. This substance would greatly reduce the flammability of the fuel the exterminators typically use, though the films covering us would oxidize and become useless after about 20 minutes. We needed to make a clean sweep of our travel path and secure the nearby maintenance hangar before then. I placed the spent canister back in my tail pouch and began driving again.
“So you’ve got one of those spray bottles for me, right?” The human looked over to me pleadingly. “Just sayin’. I’d like to not burn to death if at all possible.”
“Are you willing to strip naked and shave yourself?”
“What?”
“This stuff only works if it forms a solid layer on you. It won’t work on fur and pelts.”
“Shit… Can I have my gun back then?”
“No.”
We continued moving for about ten minutes per the human’s instructions. The intersection that would take us to our loot was finally in view. There were large industrial style buildings surrounding us from all sides. This was where minor ship parts like valves would be stored or milled out for ships. Lots of little doors and tight alleyways for the diminutive insectoids to scurry through. As such this was the perfect environment for exterminators to hide. I kept my eyes peeled for even the slightest movement.
My suspicions paid off immediately when I noticed some dumpsters that were conveniently lined up between two buildings. I know a barricade when I see one. I brought our caravan to a stop just out of weapons range of the prey’s fortifications. I checked the driver’s panel for life signs and smiled knowing my caution was justified.
I stood out of the drivers seat, silently motioning towards the dumpsters. Half of the squad formed up around the carts. The other half broke into groups and approached the dumpsters from multiple angles. My group consisted of Tarth, the human, and three other Arxur.
My group and I shouldered our rifles and began unloading into the dumpsters.
The foolish prey actually thought they were going to get one over on us. In moments tilfish started scrambling, desperately spraying the flammable contents of their weapons in the air towards us. Most of it fell short with only a few stray droplets touching us. We stood back at a comfortable range as the last few bugs dropped to the ground bleeding out in a pool of their own accelerant. One of the little abominations used the last of its pathetic strength to immolate the remains of it group.
A burst of flame pushed towards us, showering us with embers and half burnt debris. Our groups backed away from the intense heat and rapidly pawed off any unwelcome remains of the explosion. Well, except for the human, his left forearm was very on fire. With a surprising level of calmness, my human pulled a water bottle from his belt and doused the flame away.
He looked over to me and grumbled. “I probably should of stayed at the carts.”
“Probably. How did you even get that much fuel on your arm?”
“I didn’t. These uniforms are made out of acrylic and cotton. Very flammable. The UN thought it would be a good idea to have us peace keep against guys who almost exclusively use fire. I have many words about the UN. None of them are nice.”
“At least you handled being on fire pretty well.”
“I’ve seen about twenty people get caught on fire in the past week. I know the drill. Also, I’m gonna need some medical attention for this by the end of the day.”
--------------------------------
Fantastic, we’ve arrive at the maintenance hangar the human recommended and what do we find? More barricades and a bunch of life signs. Maybe I shouldn’t complain. I might be able to top off all my carts in one go. I ordered my squad to surround the structure just as I had with the eugenics clinic. Though I had to stop the auto-turret techs before they accidentally lit up my human. I quietly pondered how I was going access the hangar with minimal gunfire. I didn't want to run the risk of accidentally damaging a spare FTL drive or something. I ultimately landed on the idea of just ramming through the door with the cargo cart to draw attention and then have the squad flank the inhabitants.
As one of my troops lined up their cart with the doors a shaky human voice called out. “Wait! We have missile warheads rigged to blow if you try anything!”
My human looked over to me and motioned he was going to the door. I allowed him to do so.
“Hey Lee, is that you?” My human questioned. “How are you holding up?”
“Hall? What the hell are you doing with the space nazi crocs?”
(Who the hell is Hall? Oh, okay, that’s my human’s name. I should probably remember that.) “You know. Trying to not die. Things are all kinds of FUBAR right now.”
“Things get rough and you just bail? All we had to do is hold down the fort and wait for rescue. And what do you do? You immediately defect to them. They literally eat babies. You abandoned humanity.”
“Lee. A UN fleet jumped into system one hour after the Arxur arrived.”
“So they tried to save us and you decide to run off?”
“No no. How long would it take for a fleet going FTL to get here assuming a distress signal was sent out the second the Arxur arrived?”
“… Are you saying that they knew the Arxur were coming and didn’t give us a heads up? But…”
“Look man. You’ve got to make your own decisions, but from where I’m standing you really only have two choices. Either commit suicide by Arxur or walk away from what your doing and survive. The Arxur are going to eventually try to trade us to the UN. I intend on living.”
“But what about the tilfish? Are you seriously fine with them being cattle?”
“If you want to die for some bugs that burnt Clark alive two days ago, then that's your call. See you later… Or not.”
“Wait. Wait!”
My human didn’t respond. He just walked back over to me. After that brief exchange, he looked completely used up. It did help me to better understand his willingness to work with me though. All these humans planet side had effectively been left to die before we even arrived at Sillis. Most of them didn’t even know they were fighting for a government that withheld knowledge that could’ve saved them. They could have evacuated and saved so many sapient lives.
So much for 5 humans for every 500 million xenos. I waited long enough. It was time to crack this egg. As I gave the order to breach, I heard four consecutive gunshots come from the hangar. The cargo cart broke open the door and the side entrances were forced as well. I walked in behind the cargo cart and took stock of the situation. A somewhat tanned human was standing over three tilfish carcasses while brandishing its rifle towards a crowd of prey.
The human was seizing up saying. “Don’t move. I… I… I don’t want to die, okay! I… I’m sorry. It’s just that…”
The human trailed off murmuring nonsense. My human got his attention and led him out of the building. Given the degraded mental state of the disheveled human, that was probably best given what was going to happen next. I gave a quick look around, there was no “rigged warhead”, the “Lee” human had given us an empty threat.
The weak prey didn’t stand a chance as my fellow Arxur snatched them up, forcing them into the refrigeration cart. Shrill cries escaped the grotesque creature’s mouths as they were pressed against the Arxur bodies that were already in the cart. Perhaps more refrigeration carts should’ve been brought. The cart reached what was the “comfortable capacity” and there was still a third of the tilfish to go. So naturally, we just started pushing them in harder. Pops and cracks could be heard as chitin bent and broke from strain. Ear piercing noises echoed throughout the room as the little mindless bugs wailed. With one final push, we managed to load all of the bugs into the cart. The readout said we had collected about 18,200lbs of food. While the cart’s recommended weight limit had been exceeded, the thought of 250 Arxur getting to stave off starvation brought me so much joy.
I walked about the hangar inspecting all of the available loot. While I was disappointed by the lack of any FTL related equipment, there was however, an abundance of components for inertial dampeners and shields. My squad got to work loading up the two cargo carts as I went to check up on the two humans. I found them a short walk away from the hangar sitting together under a shade. The humans looked over to me when I approached them. Lee must have gotten more ill. His face was inflamed and red with looked to be signs of leaked fluid on his pelts.
Wonderful. I’m going to have to take both of them to medical since this one is developing some kind of infection. My human looked between Lee and me for a moment before speaking. “Lee. This is Varce. He is a supply officer on his ship and is currently in charge of retrieving ship parts from this base. Varce. This is Lee. He was in training to become an air force mechanic prior to being transferred to the UN to be cannon fodder.”
Seeing that Lee was hesitant to talk, I took the initiative. “Hello Lee, I’m Varce. We’ll be heading back to our ship here in a minute. I’ll run you guys by our doc and get you some acceptable sleeping quarters. As for food, we have two bags of human meals ready to eat available for you since you guys have certain dietary restrictions. Also, I’m going to need you to forfeit your firearms for now. Armed humans can be somewhat distressing for Arxur. I hope you understand.”
Lee glanced up to me. “Are we going to be traded back to the UN?”
“Yes. While the exact terms haven’t been decided yet. I’d hazard a guess that Chief Hunter Shaza will likely be trading you for artificial meat. We don’t eat people.”
The human scrunched up his face at that and handed over his weapons. The three of us then headed back to the carts so that we could depart. I did have to shoo Tarth off the overburdened refrigeration cart. He then started to try to pester the mentally unwell human. Luckily, my human lured him away before any harm could be inflicted.
--------------------------------
Once we had returned to Cattleship Δ1242, the humans and I fished out the MREs and armor from the cargo cart. We went to my room to deposit the goods and then headed towards doc. I may have made a miscalculation on my path unfortunately. We passed by the caging area that was established for any captured enemy humans. It already housed several residents. Lee began to panic thinking that I was going to be placing him in there.
I stopped him and explained. “No Lee, listen. That’s for humans that try to kill us. I’m going to be re-purposing a supply closet for you two. Okay? ...That sounds worse than it actually is. It’s a nice supply closet. I’ll get you some nesting materials.”
My human started snorting and chuckling uncontrollably. I wasn’t certain if it was me or Lee that caused this.
We paid doc a visit and got my human patched up. The other one’s swelling had reduced back down during the trip back to the ship.
We would be departing soon. The ship had collected everything that it could for the time being, so our next destination would be a cattle farm on an old thafki colony planet. I hoped that things could go smoothly with the temporary integration of two humans. I’m going to need them for the ungodly big pile of ship components I’m about to have to enter into Dominion inventory.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s it for the time being. I’m not certain if I’ll do a follow up on this. This whole fanfic idea ended up happening thanks to Marcel’s magic helmet. I make no claim of being a decent write or proofreader. If you read this, it’s your own fault.

People are elected for levels of government.. Each city and town should choose a leader
Leaders have the right to mint, initiate and veto legislation, appoint agency heads, select two thirds of judges, dismiss a criminal conviction, tax, and banish from a territory. Gods may be appealed to to reduce sentences or overturn convictions. They also judge misprosecution.
President may serve up to four terms. Rebuilds count as the same person.
Fifty percent of daily power points are given to winners of various sporting contests
People and parties can risk votes on the outcome of sporting contests. This is the same for legislative contests.
Contests are regulated by congresses several that appoint delegates in a manner to be described by act.
Gods must be elected for all levels of government. They may mint, control banks, tax, banish and organize or control police chiefs by appointing police chiefs or rating candidates and policies. Gods elected at each level serve as the court of last resort. Gods are elected using majority rules voting with runoff if no person receives a majority in the first round. For the chief executive, power is invested in a symbolic president of the Universe and a minister elected by all of those in Congress. Both serve four year terms, and up to four of them.
Gods for the home are chosen individually. Everyone must choose a personal god to lead their life and follow them. And a chaos authority. A chaos authority oversees disputes between you and your god and counts the number of people alive, acting as a liason and defender to oversee nondestruction.. All chaos authorities must be protected by individual angels, drones and Thaos itself. Thaos is ordered to ensure safe, free and fair elections.

2023.03.26 18:30 TheGrinningFrog Erebert the Novice Monk, Zilight Fantasy Playthrough, Day 5 ad 6
This is a journal playthrough of Zilight Dark Ages, a solo play zombie game using a regular deck of cards and dice. The aim is to survive for 28 days... Day 5 — Diamonds 6: Hunter's Cabin
(Plague roll d6-3: roll 3 - 3 = 0, location is clean)
(Roll 5 & 6 for arrows = 5 Bodkin & 3 Broadhead)
(Exploration cards: Clubs 9 [Medical Supplies] & Diamonds Ace [discard])
Through the night, my mind is troubled by visions of plague-mucus stained faces, contorted by death, yet kept animate by the will of Hell. I wake before sunrise in a sweat. Should I have burned the corpses?
Maybe.
My certainty and resolve is to move onward to the east.
Steep banks tumble down to what I'm sure must be Coldbeck, that flows through the fen village to the south. Despite the realisation of my slow progress, it won't be far to detour and cross their bridge. Better than risk the greasy banks. Although my mission may be clearer than ever, yesterday's encounter has rattled me somewhat. Come to think of it, I'm feeling dizzy and unwell.
With village long houses in sight ahead, I happen to glance back upon what looks like a hunter's shelter against the hillside and shielded by a small grove of hazel bushes. It's not far away, and with the possibility of finding arrows for my bow, I decide to go look.
Before I enter, I check around the area. I don't wish to be caught off-guard as I was with the bear. All is quiet, but I discover a grave — likely dug within the last two weeks — topped by a fresh posey of flowers.
Circling to the front of the hut a pain in my ribs stabs deeply and, stumbling, I collapse in the doorway. Through blurred senses I hear a voice, feel hands and the world goes dark.
When I awake there is a cool cloth at my brow, a light calm voice and a good scent, like the monastery refectory at mealtime. My wounds have been packed with soothing poultices, moss and bound.
She asks me why I am travelling so soft and unprepared and I feel my cheeks blush to be reminded of myself by a girl below marriageable age. She laughs and lets me know her name is Begu. We talk about my mission and she speaks of losing her father, the hunter, last week. Before we eat, I insist that I say a benediction over the grave. Begu is grateful and her tears remind me of her youth.
After the nourishing simple stew I fall asleep quickly.
In the morning, Begu gives me a few arrows she can spare and some healing oil. I feel so much better and call her my blessing. I leave her with my cross to hang in her home to bring her God's grace. We part with smiles and I pray for her safety.
*Author Note: After drawing the 6 medical supplies card (fully healing my character + 1 spare), I came to the conclusion that someone who knows what they are doing would be a better narrative decision than Erebert trying to patch himself up. And it didn't affect any of the other cards drawn, so I journalled it this way.
-----
Game Mechanics - When you are at a location, in this case, the Hunters Lodge, you ignore any other location cards drawn that turn - so the Ace of Diamonds was ignored. Rich got luck with his rolls, getting much needed arrows and a whole bunch of healing.
Locations can be contaminated with the plague. The busier the footfall in a location, the higher the plague rating will be. We estimated that a remote hunters lodge would be a fairly safe place.
Day 6 — Hearts 2: Dying Mother
(Quest: Rolled 4 = [Column 2] next 2 Spades in deck, followed by next Diamond [and 1 explore card])
(Drew through deck to see what the order of my journalling tasks will be — if I survive each! — Drew Spades 6: Fat Zombies ×6; Spades 2: Zombies ×2; Diamond 2: Abandoned Caravan [Explore ×1 = Clubs 2: Bag of Turnips])
Silence and stench are overwhelming walking through the settlement. Between some of the houses I see the occasional body lying in the mud, but I do as I must. Let the dead bury the dead, my work is so the living can live. Crossing the bridge gets me a few more steps closer to my goal and this low country will be behind me.
'Help,' it's a woman's voice, weak but insistent, from an open door.
'I hear you out there,' there is despair in the tone. 'You can help find my boy. Please? Don't go.'
And my quest grows longer. She is Bertha and she is dying, but, as the apostle Paul told the Romans, I say to her, 'Where there is life there is hope.' And taking her hands in mine, 'Where there is love there is life. I will find your son.'
Bertha was sure her boy, Rædwald, would run to the Rool-scar ruins two leagues east. And it is a place of which I've heard told in hushed breaths. Before even the soldiers of Rome the Old Scar was an ancient fort; and when I was a boy myself, there were tales of the ghosts of iron men from times long ago.
But the road east is good and I reach the foot of the high whitestone cliff by the sun's zenith, so I will not be in its shade. From here Bertha's directions were jumbled, from stories before her husband died, but my thirst took me a short path north against the escarpment to the White Mere to rest a moment.
The waters appear clear, blue and quiet, until I get closer and clumsily break a dry branch. One by one, six heads break the calm surface and then their bloated bodies follow. Suet-white and corpse-grey flesh seems ready to slough off like jelly on bones. I ready my spear glad they don't seem fast (roll 5 & 4 = 2 point hit), but only succeed to release the first from foul unlife. I realise these may be tougher to defeat than I thought. (Initiative roll Erebert 3; Zombies 3; then E 5; Z 2) Mud on the shoreline grips at their ankles long enough for me to take one more strike. (Roll 6 & 2 = 1 hit) As I suspected some of the congealed mass discorporates, but — gutless — it remains standing and (roll 6, 5, 4, 2 & 2 = 2 hits) the five surround me. Only my helmet saves me from the two violent blows to the head.
I should run, but what if the child is near. (Roll 3 & 1 = miss) I need to calm myself if I'm to stay standing and not get… surrounded. (Roll 6, 6, 6, 6 & 4 = 4 hits) I'm hit from all sides and pain opens my eyes wide to the slow, slack-jawed slovens. (Roll 5 & 5 = 2 point hit) I find a gap to escape through and decapitate the fattest. (Roll 6, 3, 3 & 2 = 1 hit) Although they struggle to catch me, a ham first crunches into my ribs and something that was healing tears. (Roll 6 & 4 = 2 point hit) Anger fills my decisive thrust, bursting a swollen belly that explodes with writhing black leaches. (Roll 6, 3 & 3 = 1 hit) Fat corpses slip and slide in the ichor saturated ground and one bites my ankle, (roll 6 & 4 = 2 point hit) so I stab it through the skull. (Roll 4 & 3 = both miss) The grass and weeds of the lakeshore are making the fight a slow, clumsy slog. (Roll 4 & 2 = 1 point hit) I barely keep my footing, only luckily severing the spine of the first one I hit. (Roll 5 = 1 hit) Distracted by extracting my spear from purulent organ fat, the remaining thing of miscreation grabs and rakes my throat. (Roll 6 & 4 = 2 point hit) Close enough to smell rancid decomposition, my spear finds its mark and I am coated in the filth of the thing.
It feels like a risk, but I wash myself off in the lake. Briefly a mire of gore surrounding my pained and bruised body, the cleansing helps my resolve the child must be to the south in the haunted ruins. I continue with vigilance and a trepidation born of childhood stories.
The path at the base of the cilff seems well trodden and ahead I see some tents of cannabis cloth. Raising my bow, I see two skinny figures. Their gait is unmistakable. (Roll 5 & 5 = 2 hits) I don't let them get close.
In one of the tents (plague roll 4 -2 = 2; current exhaustion level is 4, so no roll required) I find Rædwald, the boy of not yet seven summers, hiding beneath a blanket hugging a sack of turnips. He asks if I know his daddy. I tell him I'm here to take him to his mum, and on the journey back I lift him to my shoulders as I was carried as a boy.
Bertha's delight is worth all my effort and pains and her son hugs her until the late afternoon, when the Lord calls her soul to his side. Before she does I promise to take the boy to safety and Bertha gives me a gift I could not have imagined. Clubs A (Breastplate +6) "To go with the helmet," she says. It was her husband's — an heirloom of a more civilised age.
Before sunset, I take Rædwald north to Begu. With hope they will help each other over their losses and she will teach him to hunt.

2023.03.26 18:16 darkdill Plagueis, the Shadow of Death (CC-immune Battlemage)
Plagueis, the Shadow of Death
https://www.deviantart.com/andrewdobell/art/Zombie-Dragon-120743842 (Credit given to original artist; this artwork is for reference and does not depict the Champion as a final product) Background One of the first dragons of Runeterra, the dragon Vulfeynnax was a denizen of the Blessed Isles for centuries until the Ruined King came and unleashed the curse of undeath, changing the land into the Shadow Isles. Vulfeynnax was transformed by the catastrophe into a Dracolich, an undead dragon of untold power and with a hatred of all life. Now known as Plagueis, he bides his time on the Shadow Isles, waiting to scourge Runeterra of all life and turn it into a land of undeath, while disposing of anything, living, dead, or undead, that dares to enter his lair.
General Concept Plagueis is a battlemage with permanent immunity to crowd control effects (the only exception is Stasis), making him very hard to stop. However, in exchange for this immunity, he cannot be buffed or healed by allies (he can still heal at the fountain), and cannot use Summoner's Spells (except Recall). Instead of Summoner's Spells, he has two abilities that take their place that play into his kit.
In combat, along with his permanent immunity to crowd controls, Plagueis's basic abilities must be charged up to inflict stronger effects. Due to the slow nature of his kit, he can be easily pre-empted or outmaneuvered by faster-acting and highly-maneuverable opponents. Additionally, he cannot charge up more than one ability at a time, though his "Contempt" ability lets him periodically bypass the charge-up on his abilities. However, if his abilities are used with proper planning and deliberation, he can be devastating in team fights.
Pros - Permanently immune to crowd controls (except Stasis)
- Very strong AOE capabilities
- Tough to kill
- Powerful initiation
- Excellent DoT capabilities
- Good self-sustain
- Manaless
Cons - Cannot be healed or buffed by allies
- No access to Summoner's Spells
- Huge target, easily hit by skillshots
- Abilities are all slow and require charge-ups
- Weak against highly-mobile opponents
- Vulnerable to Grievous Wounds effects
- Lackluster burst capabilities
Abilities
(NOTE! Highly subject to change) P - Undying Destroyer Plagueis is permanently immune to crowd controls, but cannot be healed or buffed by allies. Additionally, instead of Summoner's Spells, Plagueis has two unique abilities in their place: Contempt and Spite.
All of Plagueis's basic abilities can be charged to increase their power and, when fully charged, add bonus effects. Plagueis can still move and perform other actions while charging, but reduces his own movement speed while doing so. Plagueis can only charge up one ability at a time.
Plagueis generates Hatred over time by dealing and taking damage to and from enemy Champions and epic Monsters. When at maximum Hatred, he can trigger Contempt. Hatred falls off when Plagueis is out of combat.
Plagueis's basic attacks deal significant bonus magic damage, but he attacks very slowly and his base AD is mediocre-at-best.
D - Contempt When Plagueis is at 100 Hatred, he can activate Contempt to consume all of his Hatred and make his next basic ability within 6 seconds trigger at full power without a charge-up. Contempt is available at level 1 and does not require skill points. Contempt has a 4-second static cooldown that starts after he triggers an empowered basic ability.
F - Spite When activated, Plagueis generates Hatred over 12 seconds and his Hatred does not decay from being out of combat for the duration. This has a significant cooldown (i.e. 240 seconds). Spite becomes available at level 6 and does not require skill points.
Q - Death's Breath Plagueis charges up a breath attack, increasing damage as he charges up. Upon release, Plagueis releases a dark breath attack in a wide cone, dealing magic damage to all enemies hit. Half of the damage is dealt immediately, while half is dealt over 3 seconds. If fully charged, 25% of the damage is converted to true damage. Plagueis is healed for X% of the damage dealt to Champions by Death's Breath.
W - Roar of Terror Plagueis charges up a demoralizing roar, increasing the radius as he charges up. Upon release, Plagueis deals magic damage to all nearby enemies and inflicts Dismay on all enemies struck, causing them to deal X% reduced damage for a short time. If fully charged, Roar of Terror also stuns all enemies hit for 0.75 seconds.
E - Barren Flight Plagueis charges up a powerful dive, increasing range as he charges up. Upon release, Plagueis flies to the target location, damaging and knocking back all nearby enemies in his path. If fully charged, Barren Flight gives Plagueis bonus resistances for each enemy Champion struck.
R - Reign of Death Upon activation, Plagueis's next basic ability within 6 seconds can be cast at full power without a charge-up and will not consume Hatred. Three seconds after Reign of Death's activation, Plagueis releases a devastating death nova around himself. Enemies struck by the nova take heavy magic damage over 4 seconds. For each enemy Champion struck by Reign of Death, Plagueis is healed for a percentage of his missing health over 4 seconds.
Champion Match-ups
Champions who synergize well with Plagueis Leona - Leona would normally be unwilling to aid a Dracolich, but the two make a deadly combination. Leona's Solar Flare can give Plagueis a target to engage on, while Sunlight is easily triggered by the DoT on Death's Breath and Reign of Death. It helps that Leona will easily be able to follow Plagueis in on his dives.
Ornn - Ornn is one of the few Champions who can actually "buff" Plagueis by allowing the Dracolich to buy stronger items. Ornn's initiates and Brittle debuff can also benefit Plagueis somewhat. The only issue between the two will be picking who takes top lane.
Nocturne - Paranoia can be a huge strategic help for Plagueis, preventing the enemy from seeing him when he starts his charge-ups. Nocturne can also join Plagueis in a dive and wipe out a priority target while Plagueis deals with the others.
Sejuani - Sejuani's Permafrost will work with Plagueis, even if basic attacks are not his forte. Sejuani's ultimate can also serve as a good initiation tool, giving Plagueis the time he needs to prepare Reign of Death and Barren Flight as a follow up.
Champions who Plagueis struggles against Fiora - One thing Plagueis will struggle against is high-mobility opponents. Fiora is both mobile and can shred Plagueis' maximum health with True damage. This lets her easily avoid his ponderously slow abilities and then cut him down with precision and grace.
Illaoi - The Kraken Priestess is an enemy of death, and this is particularly the case for Plagueis, who will generally have trouble bursting her down. This means that she will generally win duels with him, and take advantage of his slow speed with her tentacle attacks while sustaining through whatever damage he deals.
Vayne - While Vayne can't Condemn Plagueis into a wall, her Silver Bolts will tear Plagueis to shreds very quickly if she focuses her fire on him. Plagueis will also struggle to hit her due to Tumble, letting Vayne dodge his slow attacks.
Brand - Brand's trait allows him to shred Plagueis's maximum health and generally cause him a lot of pain. While Brand can't stun Plagueis, he won't necessarily need to if he can just nuke him down. Brand's item choices also tend to be strong against Plagueis.
Other Champions who Plagueis may find troublesome Jarvan IV - Plagueis might be immune to crowd controls, but he's not immune to getting trapped by temporary terrain. Jarvan's Cataclysm can be used to hold Plagueis in place after he uses Barren Flight, as Plagueis can't Flash out of it.
Bard - Bard is the only Champion in the game capable of crowd-controlling Plagueis, as the Dracolich is not immune to Stasis effects. Tempered Fate can lock down Plagueis for a short time, allowing Bard's team to either set up an attack or escape from him.
Kindred - Kindred's ultimate will not affect Plagueis regardless of which team he's on, so in general he should not fight inside the AOE of Lamb's Embrace. Kindred can also be somewhat hard for Plagueis to chase down and finish off.
Master Yi - While Yi doesn't innately deal %-max HP true damage like Fiora or Vayne, his Wuju Style's true damage will still hurt a lot since Plagueis cannot reduce it with Roar of Terror. However, Master Yi may have a tougher time avoiding Plagueis's abilities when going on the offensive.
Champions who Plagueis would be strong against Rammus - Rammus's crowd controls are useless against Plagueis, and his high armor won't help against Plagueis's plethora of magic damage attacks. Rammus also won't deal enough damage to take Plagueis out by himself before Plagueis withers him down.
Fiddlesticks - Fiddlesticks relies on surprise and crowd controls to win fights, which don't work against Plagueis. Standing still to use Drain on the Dracolich will make Fiddlesticks a very easy target, and Plagueis can survive the damage long enough to take the scarecrow demon down.
Kennen - His reliance on stuns make him unable to deal with Plagueis's CC immunity. While Kennan can harass the dragon and run away if things get dicey, there's little that the Yordle ninja can do to slow Plagueis down. All he can really do is delay the inevitable while Plagueis pushes down his lane.
Urgot - The recast of Urgot's ultimate does not work on Plagueis, removing his main means of finishing off the dragon. While Urgot's shotgun legs can shred off portions of Plagueis's maximum health, he'll be forced to make himself an easy target if he wants to use them, which works in Plagueis's favor if the dracolich makes effective trades.
This is a continuation of my previous topic made over 2 years ago. Let me know what you think.

2023.03.26 17:58 The_New_Doctor The Illumination of the Sensei - Session Seventy-Four Write Up
Previous Session Write-Up:
https://old.reddit.com/40krpg/comments/122olp7/the_illumination_of_the_sensei_session/ Session Seventy-Four Write-Up:
I am trying to get the write-up out of the way early before next session as we have a down week, this being the week following a downtime mission and therefore when I have a purposefully scheduled mental health break. As a reminder make time to get your head out of the mindset of a game prep mentality if you are running weekly games.
That being said, the title of the session was 'The Hermit'. This again was a session where I had other plans for it initially when I was just beginning prep for the arc. The brunt of the original material for this session got moved to seventy-five due to what I felt was better narrative pacing with how I changed the endeavor timing. The hermit was chosen namely for bringing Allistar back into the fray along with the Truth Seekers rather than any specific meaning of the card.
It did feature the Truth Seekers, the immediate fallout of the Adeptus Mechanicus session being that the faction could begin negotiating again with eachother over repairs to 'The Excalibur' which they needed to begin travel back into the sector to meet the forces of the Inquisition gathering in the capital subsector. Though this was background information as Allistar was busy with his emmissary duties negotiating with the Magos-Lord and the Agents became buys with Endeavours (which I used to cover the four weeks of realtime they will be experiencing).
Minor notes inlcuded:
- Shepard experiencing a vision in the organ induced coma over the next couple of weeks as the apothecary with the truth seekers looked after him. Specifically experiencing a different lifepath than he had previously and being saved by a marine in blue, himself.
- Kain meeting with the Krommites after a decade and learning that Cockaigne had been essentially anchored to Fel Duran in Jaq's anger at his last dispute with her. And him beginning the long process of working through the Adeptus Terra to resolve such issues.
Those were the major things that came up, the others are slowly working on endeavours for their own personal gain or spending experience as well. Illijah for example spend for Forbidden Lore to get some information missed previously, namely the question he did not as Andromeda in the nature of the godhead of 'The Aeternity'
From here we started a downtime mission. Specifically one centered around 'The Four of Swords' in that it was a representation of the Ordo Malleus (as Naeva is the drawing of that card in the Minor Arcanum). This was the 'Chaos Downtime' where a compact was formed with marines of the various warbands I (or others) had crafted over the course of the arc.
The Eaters of the Dead (world eaters), The Aeternity (alpha legion), The Breath of the Grandfather (Death Guard), The Briar (Emperor's Children), and The Truth Seekers were represented. They were drawn together in order to calm the nephel clans as one of their void whales had crashed into the Space Hulk 'Ashes of Infinity' (this taking place a decade ago) and needed to be released otherwise the clans would begin to upset the great game in the area.
Of course things went sideways as chaos missions are want to constantly do. The Alpha Legionaire was actually Mordred, who had taken the Fallen's face well before last arc even began - before any of the arcs began for that matter - and was making sure that Igna was retrieved from his capture by the Clans. Calogrenant after his reverse decimation of the chapter fell to his own paranoia over him refusing to believe Mordred had died, and eventually was killed by "Alpharius" as a side objective.
The Eater of the Dead caused the voidwhale to explode, and launched the Briar member into the void (after they had played a lamentation through the whale's vocal cords), and the Death Guard had mutated with some of the most severe mutations possible gaining the admiration of all players at the table and a desire to see him reappear in a Tier 6.
There is no Tier 6, but Yurly (the Breath of the Grandfather Tech-marine) will return again for certain. The Nephel Clans will as well, specifically next session.
For now, here's a bonus in the form of the Nephel Clans odd Navigators that looks like strange shark mutants that hover constantly:
House Jemadar Navigator (Personal Pool of 4 Ruin) S4 / T5 / A4 / I5 / Wil 6 / Int 3 / Fel 3 Resilience 10 (Mutated skin: AR 2) Defence 4 / Wounds 15 / Shock 8 DETERMINATION: Spend 1 Ruin to roll 5d6 Conviction 6 /Resolve 5 / Speed 9 / Size - Avg SKILLS: Default 10, Survival 12, Athletics 12, Psychic Mastery 15
BONUSES Void-Whale kin: This threat is constantly levitating off of the ground, and seems to naturally "swim" through the air. They do not suffer any difficulties from Difficult Terrain, nor can the suffer "Falling" damage always decelerating at a constant/safe pace until they are shortly off of the ground again Warp Skip – Move double your speed, this is a Reaction. Triple your speed roll 1d6, on 1 lose 1 Turn
ABILITIES * Blooded - Those blooded among the Nephel clans are no longer subject to the effects of their Nephel Gas Grenades due to natural mutation. * Naturally Sorcerous - A House Jemadar Navigator has access to the 'Touch of Corruption' and 'Infernal Gaze' Maleficarum powers - This is in addition to the 'Inflict Pain' and 'Invoke Luck' Minor Powers -- The GM may add powers as they see fit * Discipline Savant - Whenever you make a Psychic Mastery (Wil) Test to activate a psychic power from that discipline, reduce the DN by 1.
ACTION: Obsidian long-knife (9dam 1ed; Pen 4; Parry, Brutal)
Warp Eye: (Spend 1 Ruin) - Within Engaged Range - Targets maake an opposed Willpower Test to avoid the gaze -- If they survive they may choose to fight blind the rest of the encounter. Note lenses do not avoid the Lidless Gaze - If the target loses they suffer WP + 2ED Mortal Wounds not reduced by Resiliance (or armour if optional AP rule is used) -- Additionally they are Restrained for 3 (rank) rounds * They must make a Corruption DN9 test - Any creature that did not soak all the damage must spend a Wrath Point or make a DN6 Toughness test or be slain (suffer a traumatic injury)
Talents: * Fearless * Battle-Psyker - Treat as Rank 2 - When you successfully use a psychic power that forces targets to take a Test to resist its effects, the DN of that Test is increased by +Rank. * Force Of Will - You gain +Double Rank bonus dice on Willpower Tests to continue sustaining psychic powers when you suffer damage (Wrath & Glory, page 265). * Touched by Fate - +2 Ruin * Mark of Chaos - Undedicated - Psychic Mastery * Sidestep - You can use Sidestep as a Reflexive Action whenever you are attacked in melee and are aware of the attacker. - You must declare a Sidestep before the Attacker makes their Weapon Skill Test — doing so sacrifices your Move Action on your next turn. - When you Sidestep, you gain +Double Rank Defence and Resilience for the purpose of resolving the attack. - You can only Sidestep once per round, and the bonuses only apply for a single attack.

2023.03.26 17:58 Drumulum List of grievances so I don't cave and buy TotK
This is a list of annoyances ranging from petty to game ruining I started writing down while playing BotW. This was compiled mainly for my friend who recommended it to me.
- Korok seeds should not exist. Tie inventory size to stamina/health increases instead.
- The Koroks are stupid to find. You figure out one of the “puzzles” then you have to do it several dozen more times. How many times do I have to drop an apple, chase a plant, catch the particle effects, or pick up a random rock.
- The majority of shrines aren’t fun, most are mediocre puzzles.
- Please calm down with the number of shrines and Korok seeds.
- If you’re exploring a new area the end result is usually just another shrine. It gets old fast.
- Time (day/night) mechanics are annoying. They are fine if there is an easy way to wait (elder scrolls/fallout), but spending a flint/fire arrow just to wait until morning isn’t fun. Just add another power to the slate.
- Why are the time skip options so limited? Why not have per hour options?
- Why is the motion controlled aiming turned on by default? I thought Link was just bad at aiming until I figured out what was going on.
- The camera functionality is annoying. If I have an item in my inventory it should just be added to the journal automatically. I shouldn’t have to drop it and take a picture.
- I don’t care at all about any of the characters or the story. Zelda is a wet paper bag full of sadness, the hero is a silent 12 year old, Ganon is a dick. Great. How much more interesting could it have been if you were tricked into releasing Ganon somehow (Shadow of the Colossus)? It works because your character has no memory in the start of the game so you’d be easy to fool, and now you feel responsible and compelled to do something about it. Hell the first thing you do is trust a mysterious old man and go around to locked up shrines collecting power from shriveled up mummy looking people, it could’ve been so easy to make something more interesting happen.
- Cooking is a chore. Compare cooking in this to alchemy in Skyrim. Waiting for a cutscene and having to reselect every ingredient over and over is annoying and tedious.
- Why isn’t there any log of recipes discovered?
- Why does a single radish give more health than 5 prime meats?
- Why the hell is there a slow dialog box pop up every time you search something? It takes ages to loot a field of destroyed guardians because of it. Only show the popup on new items.
- Why is upgrading the armor so slow. If I find a new fairy fountain/get new gear I have to sit through/skip the same cutscene a dozen times. It’s very annoying.
- If I’m upgrading armor and I run out of mats the game doesn’t give me an option sometimes to see what I ran out of, I have to talk to the fairy again to see it.
- Why can I only see upgrade materials when I’m in the upgrade dialog with the fairy? How hard could it have been to show it in the inventory?
- Weather affects were cool the first time, not cool immediately after that. If rain starts while you’re exploring it’s just annoying.
- Difficulty scaling is all over the place. The Lynel vs any Ganon boss is an obvious issue. Some enemies just one shot you and others do no damage. It’s inconsistent and getting a game over because a single arrow took half your health is just annoying.
- Why does locking on to an object cause the camera to shift around?
- Saving doesn’t work right. If I see a picture of the save stage, I expect the game to be exactly the way it was when I left it, but it’s not. Items on the ground disappear, and saving inside a shrine causes you to start back at the beginning of the shrine on load, except all your progress is erased and the chests are already looted.
- Why is there only one save slot?
- Why can’t I save multiple times without overwriting my previous save?
- Motion controls shouldn’t exist. The few shrines that use it shouldn’t exist.
- Why don’t identical cooked foods with the same name stack? Why can I run out of food slots, but have infinite material space?
- Most of the armor sets are about environment, not play style. And switching between them is slow.
- Everything in the game feels like it was designed to look good instead of actually play. Soooo many repeated animations and cutscenes. I don’t need to see the fast travel cutscene, I don’t need to see the blood moon cutscene, the fairy’s gestures, Bolson being a moron every time I select an upgrade, and entering a shrine shouldn’t take 3 cutscenes and a loading screen. And why does skipping the cutscene take so long?
- Why is there only one player home in the most boring village? Why can’t I buy a rock house or a fish house or a mansion in the middle of nowhere?
- Cooking is very inconsistent, 4 endura shrooms makes a stamina buff, 1 endura carrot makes a stamina buff, but combine them and they don’t.
- Why can’t I fast travel and bring my horse with me?
- Why can’t I see my horses affection level unless I’m at a stable trying to retrieve it?
- If my inventory is full and I can’t pick up the item in a chest, I have to see the chest opening animation, see the popup describing the item, see my inventory is full, open my inventory, drop an item, open the chest again with the same cutscene, the same dialog box, then I can finally pick up the item. If it’s a new item I then have to drop it, pull out the camera and take a picture, save the picture, then pick up an item again. Jesus Christ. This could all be fixed by an option to swap an item in my inventory for the item in the chest.
- Why is there no way to tell if an item in my inventory is logged in the journal? I don’t want to go look in the journal to find out or drop it to take a picture.
- Because journal progress is entirely driven by taking pictures (or buying them but that’s not fun), I feel compelled to check everything every time I switch zones. If it was progress on kills, I wouldn’t feel like I have to look through a camera every time I see something I don’t immediately recognize.
- Why can’t I see item durability?
- Why are the sorting options so bad? Why can’t I sort ingredients by common effect? Why can’t I sort the journal at all?
- If you’re going to limit my inventory and give weapons durability, then for the love of god give me a way to save items for later.
- I spent 4500 on a house and it didn’t come with a chest, an indoor cooking area immune to rain, an upgraded bed, armor displays nor mannequins. There’s so much more they could’ve added: picture frames that you can use to display pictures you’ve taken, a goddess statue for upgrades, archery range, target dummy, aquarium for rare fish, terrarium for rare critters, stable for horses, garden with options for different plants to grow. But it did come with 2 idiots that sit out front in the day time.
- Every other character talks but not Link, it’s awkward as hell.
- Using stasis on objects and hitting them feels bad because you’re wasting item durability.
- The weapon durability kills my enjoyment. I feel pressured not to use items so I’m constantly using bombs. The fact that weapons just disappear when broken is stupid, the fact that you can’t repair weapons is stupid, the fact that you can’t buy weapons that you like is stupid, you just have to remember spawn locations or use other items. It feels like weapons last 5 minutes if I decide to use them, it seriously ruined the game for me.
- Since items have very limited durability the only interesting things to loot are the master sword and armor. And since so many of the armors are for the environment and not play style, getting loot isn’t fun most of the time.
- If you wanted the player to have a variety of weapons, it would’ve been so much better to have weapon archetypes stored in your iPad. That way as you find a new item, you can swap between weapons. Your inventory would have the master sword, a one-handed weapon, a 2 handed weapon, a magic weapon, a throwing weapon/bow that you could swap between at any time. The weapons in your inventory would be unlocked, and you could switch to newly discovered weapons at a campfire or something. That way I don’t find a cool weapon, and then never use it because it breaks after like 5 minutes. The player has way more choice in weapons to use, finding a new weapon is more fun because you can actually use it.
- All the shields feel the same to use no matter the stats or material type or shape. I should be able to throw the spiked ones as weapons, heavy metal ones should disarm opponents on parrying, the blue guardian shields should have an automatic reflector that has to recharge between uses. There could also be shields with elemental protections, or shields that do elemental damage on blocking melee attacks, etc. in the game shields only differ on durability, material, and defense rating.
- Magic staffs are just bad melee weapons. They break too quickly.
- The magic melee weapons are just weapon + environmental effect. Instead give the iPad an option to enchant your current weapon for X seconds with a long cooldown.
- The divine beasts are just mediocre puzzles with a boss fight. They are way too cool to be this boring to beat.
- Open world difficulty is crap. The starting area is easy and the castle areas are hard, everywhere else feels the same. After you get established with decent gear, the game doesn’t progress in difficulty. A few enemies here and there are extremely powerful, but the run of the mill enemies don’t get harder after pretty early in the game as you progress. (https://youtu.be/rWFy8v9snfs)
- If it weren’t for the Master Sword health requirement, getting more max health doesn’t feel worth it. So many items give a health buff that it feels pointless. Even Miphras grace gives extra health.
- The hints about memory picture locations aren’t stored anywhere, they should be in the logs somewhere.
- Why cant I filter the main map screen? I should be able to hide stamps/pins, finished shrines, etc.
- The stamps system should have an option for adding a note, the limited pictures you can choose from for the stamps isn’t sufficient.
- Fighting guardians is uninteresting if all you can do is parry. It’s boring, tedious and frustrating. Most weapons and bombs don’t hurt it at all.
- Why can’t I sprint with a torch out? Japan has an Olympic team surely they know about the opening ceremony.
- Using up all your stamina shouldn’t lock you out until all the bar is refilled, you should get the option to sprint after the first circle is refilled. It’s annoying.
- If you’re not in combat stamina should refill much faster, running around the mazes they added isn’t fun, so at least make it faster.
- Swimming doesn’t work that way. Traversing water is annoying with the cryo stepping stone method. You should only lose stamina in the water while dashing.
- Blood moon is annoying, there isn’t anything special about the enemies they just respawn. They should do more damage and drop more loot or something.
- Why can’t I craft arrows.
- Why do vendors have very limited stock for common items? One vendor had a single arrow in stock. It’s just annoying.
- Why can’t I sell weapons to merchants? It would be a great way to make consistent money.
- Would it have killed them just to have the Master Sword have infinite energy?
- Why is there a minor test of strength right next to the final area, why did I find a major test of strength very early in comparison?
- Flying guardians are annoying. You frequently can’t lock on to them. They just leave sometimes while you’re fighting, it’s like running after a dragon in Skyrim. Parrying their blast only to have it miss is very frustrating.
- Why can’t I stasis critters?
- Why can’t I use the camera in stealth mode?
- Why does the ancient helm look like a thimble.
- Loot rolling off a cliff into water is annoying.
- Being disarmed off a cliff is annoying.
- The only thing worse than escort missions is a stealth escort mission.
- The best way to ruin stealth section is to make it instantly fail on detection instead of giving you a chance to fight.
- It took a lot of trouble and I was really looking forward to taming the Lord of the Mountain, only for the stables to reject it and he disappears almost immediately on dismount.
- The final boss Dark Beast Ganon is a monumental disappointment. Its pretty hard to even be damaged by him.
- Why is there so much emphasis on climbing but when given DBG who is a massive towering enemy, you can't climb on him to do damage.
- Why did the game give me my worst horse in the DBG boss fight.
- Why did the game just hand me the most powerful bow in the game for the final boss fight.
- Why are powers not available in combat shrines.
- Revali
- I thought it would let me keep exploring after defeating Ganon, so I collected the final memory then went and killed him. I was incredibly disappointed to find out it wasn't CAGE and in order for the final memory to count I had to go to the epic final area and just leave. That was so disappointing.
- If you don't 100% it by backtracking out of the final area (which is stupid and counter-intuitive) Zelda says you may not have recovered all of your memories. Great job game.
- Midna's power does not activate in all times where you can die.
- Powers with multiple charges don't start recharging until all of them are depleted. So I have to waste a power charge to get them to recharge instead of making them recharge one at a time like every other game I've ever played does it.
- Nothing quite takes me out of a game like a popup from a completely different game (Xenoblade) (And no easter eggs are fine, but most other games know not to put "Xenoblade Chronicles" in my active quest log at the beginning of the game).
- Don't put korok seeds in the final area, again stupid backtracking. This extremely dangerous place with a lot of enemies and epic music, then you stumble into an annoying leaf.
- The story is just crap. Zelda spends all this time failing to activate her powers but clearly has some skill with the divine beasts, yet instead of allowing her to be good at the divine beasts or use sheikah technology to help out, nope she just magically gets powers.
