2023.05.17 01:09 agentlewind Looking for some general early career guidance
I'll be graduating in a few days, and I'm looking to relocate from the southern US to Boston, but the cost of housing (and other factors) just make it financially painful at best and completely infeasible at worst. So far I've had a screening with Charles River (they've already set up the virtual interview for Tuesday), had another screen Friday through Joule/System One, and have been contacted by two more recruiters through Aerotek/Actalent. The Joule recruiter told me that the position (client was BMS) was closed by the time of our screening, but he liked my resume and so wanted to speak with me anyway. By contrast, the Charles River people seem pretty excited to have me on and essentially fast-tracked when they heard I had other interviews because they want "first dibs." I hardly mind that, but two things:
- I'm not that jazzed about murine work (I don't mind it, but I'm more of an in vitro person)
- The max posted salary compared to, say, the low end of the contract position is a difference of $20K. It's not a bad salary at all (middle of the road) but I'm a little leery since the COL in Boston is terrifying compared to where I am.
Say I got an offer from CR -- would it not be wiser to just take it instead of holding out for other opportunities that may not materialise? I also kind of got goaded into saying the CR salary was about as expected, so would it be in bad taste to negotiate an offer? I don't want to come off as a greedy/dishonest bastard and end up with a rescind. Has anyone here worked for CR? How did you find it? There's also the cost of relocation (I am poor); I usually see people talking about sign-on bonuses/relo packages for mid/senior levels, but how common are they for entry level assoc sci/RAs?
For some background, my BS is biotechnology, summa/magna cum laude...but I also worked two jobs/60 hours a week while being in school full time and taking care of my disabled father. So I have very little research experience besides participating in an HHMI project. This combined with living so far away makes me very, very nervous to try to push my luck.
